Pay it forward

April 2nd, 2008 by Stephen Tsai

LOS ANGELES — There's another reason to root for the players who participated in yesterday's Pro Day.
Colt Brennan told Greg McMackin it is his wish that UH players who have played in the NFL in the past 10 years get together and help pay for a new locker room. He said the players would be able to design it the way they wish.

* * *

Scouts were intrigued with 176-pound  cornerback Ryan Keomaka, who sprinted 40 yards in 4.35 seconds and bench pressed 225 pounds 20 times. Keomaka, who is Chad Owens' brother-in-law, was seldom-used this past season. He missed all of training camp last August while completing summer-school work.
On his first 40 attempt yesterday, Keomaka ran the distance in 4.45 seconds.
Irked by that performance, he went to the sideline to practice his running technique. On his second attempt, he was clocked at 4.35 seconds.
The NFL official who coordinated the sprint drills noted that several Warriors appeared to ease up a nano second as they approached the finish line. Not Keomaka, who appeared to accelerate in the final 10 yards. It is that closing speed that enabled Keomaka to chase down a Georgia ballcarrier in the Sugar Bowl — a story UH coaches shared with scouts yesterday.

* * *

Slotbacks Ryan Grice-Mullins and Davone Bess had UH careers that were similar statistically.
But it is apparent both will have different futures.
In a Pro Day briefing, scouts were told that Bess has better lower-body strength and is built more like a running back. He would be ideal as an inside receiver. Grice-Mullins is quicker and might end up as a wideout.
Scouts were impressed that both receivers caught all passes with only their hands.

* * *

Nate Russell rarely played during his two-year career as a UH defensive end. Yet, he participated in yesterday's Pro Day.
There was reason for optimism for Russell, plus-size running back Jason Laumoli and defensive tackle Siave Seti.
Last year, running back Reagan Mauia was drafted ahead of heralded Nate Ilaoa. And Lawrence Wilson earned an invitation to an NFL training camp. That has opened up other opportunities for Wilson. Last week, he was on the Hamilton Tigercats' negotiation list, meaning he will receive a contract offer from the Canadian Football League team.
"I came out here on faith," said Russell, who does not have an agent and spent $767 for a round-trip ticket.

Tomorrow the CFL will have a Pro Day in Los Angeles.

* * *

Jason Rivers was admittedly frustrated after experiencing tightness in his hamstring while running pass routes.
He limited his workout after scouts noticed he was not able to run at full speed.
"No sense pulling it," Rivers said.
San Francisco 49er quarterbacks coach Ted Tollner, who conducted the passing drills, said Rivers and the other UH receivers have shown enough during their careers to warrant a shot in the NFL.
"Now is the waiting game," Rivers said. "Now it's waiting for someone to tell me I'm good enough."

* * *

Former UH running back David Toloumu, now an area coach, attended yesterday's practice.

* * *

It was a strange feeling to say goodbye to the UH players yesterday.
When I attended Roosevelt High a century ago, it was a three-year school. I've probably spent more time with some players than I did with many former high school classmates.
Princess Leila and I said goodbye to Colt Brennan and his father Terry Brennan.
And Colt then said how he was bored one night and was reading this blog. He then said he will never ever forget the blog host ... singing on the Youtube video.
Uh, thanks again, Addaknowjoe.

    Good Morning Tsai-kos!

    Good Morning ST and Leila.

    I'll never forget you too...on YouTube :-)

  2. Garret:

Good morning ST! Thank you so much for that extremely informative blog entry!

I love all of the details...I wish the Warriors who never got much playing time well, hopefully they can get a shot in the NFL or CFL. Reagan was a backup at UH and a starter as a rookie in the NFL, a great example for the other Warriors who are not in the spotlight.

  3. Garret:

It is so funny that Colt lurked on the day A-joe posted the YouTube video!

  4. Stephen Tsai:

Neither will the poor lion, who no longer sleeps at night.

  5. Garret:

Kansas State desperately needs to play in a bowl game this year. So, they bought themselves out of their game against Fresno State, paying a $250k penalty. It sounds a lot like what Michigan State did to UH, except that this game was going to be played at Kansas State! This sure is an indication of respect to the WAC.

Kansas State announced Tuesday that Fresno State has been dropped from the 2008 football schedule, replaced by Montana State from the Football Championship Subdivision. Yet coach Ron Prince maintains he hasn't abandoned the aggressive scheduling philosophy he brought to K-State when he was hired in 2005.

Nonetheless, the implications of the scheduling change are clear. Fresno State has been nothing but trouble for K-State, beating the Wildcats 45-21 in 2004 and 45-29 in 2007.

Prince has been outspoken about his desire to increase K-State's visibility by scheduling high-profile games on national TV, but it seems another matchup with Fresno State wasn't worth the risk.

K-State discussed dropping the final game in the series last year, but interim athletic director Jim Epps said Prince initially decided to keep it on the schedule. Then, after Fresno State beat the Wildcats 45-29 in the 2007 season finale, Prince asked K-State officials to look into dropping the game.

"It was on and then off," Epps said of Fresno State discussions. "Frankly, I didn't pay much attention to it until it was back on the burner."

  6. Garret:

Fresno State replaced the game at Kansas State with a nationally televised game vs. Rutgers.

Fresno State replaced the Wildcats with a nationally televised game against Rutgers. The Bulldogs will play at Rutgers on Sept. 1, with ESPN carrying the broadcast.

"The addition of Rutgers on Labor Day on ESPN is a special way to kickoff the 2008 season," Fresno State coach Pat Hill said in a statement. "Getting two more nationally televised games is a benefit for our program as we continue to showcase our great university."

  7. Garret:

Oh, and there's this: Kansas State now plays North Texas, Louisiana-Lafayette and Montana State, its wish-list replacement for Fresno State.

A Kansas State administrator admitted his school was trying to get out of the Fresno State game a while back, but now it's a reality worth repeating: A Big 12 school paid $250,000 to get out of a home game against the No. 3 team in the Western Athletic Conference. A home game.

Oh Auntie Em, what's become of that Midwestern pride?

Kansas State coach Ron Prince went 12-13 his first two seasons. This spring he's signed 19 junior college transfers and the acting athletic director, Jim Epps, said it was Prince's idea to get out of the Fresno State game and find a team the Wildcats could, you know, beat.

How's that for a preseason message to your team? Not exactly Notre Dame's Play Like A Champion Today, is it? More like, We'll Get Bowl Eligible Somehow.

Kansas State should change its logo from the Powercat to the Panic-cat.

"The whole thing came about because Kansas State didn't want to play the game in Manhattan [Kan.]," said Fresno State coach Pat Hill, and he seemed genuinely disappointed, probably because his teams scored 45 points both times they played Kansas State.

"It's not right," Hill said. "I think if you sign a contract, you oughta play the game."

Boeh said it took no less than 75 phone calls to get it all done, so let's follow the balancing act.

  8. Garret:

I'm glad that the scheduling worked out and that the WAC will have more national TV games.

Finally, though, someone at ESPN came up with the idea to move the UCLA-Fresno State opener back to Sept. 27, which cleared Labor Day weekend for the Bulldogs to play at Rutgers. UCLA and Tennessee agreed to move their game up a week, giving you, the sports viewer, a Labor Day extravaganza of back-to-back college football.

Somehow, in all the plate-spinning, Rutgers agreed to come to Fresno in 2012, a game that will most assuredly happen because it has a $1 million buyout. Kansas State agreed to pay $250,000 for its hot date with Montana State. And ESPN agreed to show the Fresno State-UCLA game on national TV.

"All around," Hill said, "it worked out well for us."

  9. Garret:

The coaching staffs at Washington and Florida are spending a lot of time together now exchanging notes. Washington was UH's last regular season opponent and Florida is UH's next opponent...I'm sure that the Florida coaches are studying that film and picked the Washington coaches' brains for strategies against UH's offense *and* defense.

  10. rage777:

How come not much was written about Amani Purcell's numbers? It looks like he had a huge day. A 277lb DE broad jumping 9ft, vertical of 30", and a 4.9 40.

  11. brew808:

    ST - typo in article...

Still, one scout credited Bess with a 40-yard time of 4.49, shaving 1.3 seconds off his sprint at the combine.

I think you meant 0.13 secs.

Excellent coverage by you, PL, Mr. Tanner, Rich. Mahalo!

  12. Garret:

Matt Leinart's head coach was not happy with the news about him yesterday.

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said Tuesday he was “disappointed” in quarterback Matt Leinart after Internet photos surfaced of Leinart partying at his Chandler-area home over the weekend.

One of the photos showed Leinart holding a beer bong while a woman drank from the other end.

“Matt called me Monday morning and we spoke for a while,” Whisenhunt said in a statement from the NFL owners meetings in Florida.

“I reiterated to him the type of behavior that we expect at all times from our players. He understands that as well as the level of scrutiny that he’s under because of who he is. It’s being handled internally.

“I was disappointed but at the same time have no doubts about his commitment to this football team or his ability to lead it.”

  13. Garret:

Amazing that Iowa has only 1 scholarship RB left on their roster. That should make their Spring Game interesting.

The Iowa football team's already depleted running back position took a hit on Tuesday.

The University of Iowa registrar's office confirmed that sophomore-to-be running back Jevon Pugh from Naples, Fla., is no longer registered as a full-time student. Pugh was registered as a full-time student at Iowa on Monday.

His apparent departure leaves Iowa without any running backs with game experience on the 2008 spring roster.

Pugh played in five games last season and rushed for 42 yards and one touchdown as the third-team running back behind seniors Albert Young and Damian Sims.

Junior-college transfer Nate Guillory enrolled at Iowa in January. He is thought to be the only running back on the team currently on scholarship.

  14. Garret:

Looks like Navy might have a bowl game to go to after all.

The proposed Congressional Bowl took a major step toward becoming a reality on Monday when it signed an agreement with the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Sean Metcalf, co-founder of the District of Columbia Bowl Commission, confirmed today that he has nailed down a deal to have the ACC fill a slot for the annual bowl. Plans call for a service academy to fill the other slot with the Naval Academy having already signed a contract to appear in the inaugural Congressional Bowl in 2008. Metcalf is close to signing an agreement with Army and also would like to get Air Force involved.

  15. Garret:

I wish Ken Niumatalolo well. It sounds like he's keeping the practice structure pretty much the same as Paul Johnson had it, kind of like what Mack did after taking over from JJ.

New Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo held a press conference at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to discuss spring football practice, which began Monday afternoon.
Niumatalolo said the players have looked good during offseason workouts in terms of weightlifting and conditioning. However, he said the true test will come when the team puts on pads and starts hitting.
"Football is not played in shorts. There are a lot of players who look good in shorts," Niumatalolo said. "We won't know what we really have until we put on the pads."
This afternoon's practice truly marked the start of the Niumatalolo era at Navy, although the long-time assistant didn't expect too many changes with regard to practice organization.
"I've never been one to worry about putting my stamp on the program. I'm going to do what is best for the program and what I think will lead to winning," said Niumatalolo, adding that the most noticeable difference is that he will not ride around in a golf cart ala predecessor Paul Johnson. "The structure of practice will be pretty much the same."

  16. Stephen Tsai:

    Brew:
    Nice catch.
I'm going to have to wait another hour before waking somebody up to make the change.

  17. Stephen Tsai:

    Hey, Rage777:
    Excellent point.
In retrospect he had an overall good day.
For some reason, he didn't generate a lot of buzz. But I think the numbers probably tell otherwise. It's also good to know that his strength is impressive given that he hasn't been at this heavier weight for very long.

  18. Stephen Tsai:

I think one of the problems yesterday was going from AstroTurf to FieldTurf.
It gave the impression that some of the UH players were better sprinters than players. But surfaces had some impact.

  19. Stephen Tsai:

    Garret:
I think many across the country lurk at blogs and especially Leila's videos because it's a way of keeping in touch with the football program. I think the videos make it more real. For instance, I'm a fan of the J-E-T-S, but you just don't get any videos of their practices. I know a lot of people who have never met Adam Leonard or Blaze Soares in person, but through Leila's videos, they know how funny those two are.

  20. Loa:

    morning Stephen!

thanks for the great pro day coverage.
thank you to Leila and Eugene too.

David Toloumu - now thats a name from the past, one tough bugga.

  21. Annoddah Dave:

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Thanks ST for the personal insights and coverage of the Pro Day. Hopefully, all who participated have made an impression for possible draft and/or invitation to a camp.

  22. Stretch:

    Good Morning Tsaikos!

Thanks ST & Leila for your hard work at the Pro Day. I haven't had time to go through all the videos but I will definately check all of them out.

I hope that some of the other players, other than Colt and the WR's, all get a shot at playing football somewhere, NFL or CFL. Heck, they can start in the AFL and move up.

Good Luck to all the players on draft day. 24 more days to go!!

  23. MeiLing:

    Aloha Kakahiaka, ST & Tsai-kos!

Some of the video links bring up a page with no video; problems?

Princess Leila, thanks for shooting & prepping all of those videos!

ST, mahalo for the articles. I'm sure you gave the guys our aloha. You shoulda sung an impromptu for them to give them a smile. Did you have a chance to hang out with them after Pro Day was pau? Where are the guys going to continue training?

  24. Garret:

Newberry's video has some type of bug right now...it immediately skips to Purcell's video.

  25. Garret:

I didn't have any luck with the video links on ST's article...but I clicked on the Princess' icon on the front of the sports page and that video link seems to work (except for Newberry's video) so far.

  26. Garret:

    ST,

Thank you for your hard work--I just realized that I posted thanks to the Princess last night without saying something about how you also took the red-eye, went to Pro Day, then wrote up the articles on the event. And the Princess might be a *little* younger than you, so your being able to work on that schedule is impressive.

I'm sure that your sleeping patterns are all messed up, but hopefully you will be back to normal soon.

  27. gigi-hawaii ©:

Per Ralph on the previous blog, does Colt have a big opu like some of us Tsaikos now? Where did his extra weight go?

  28. Eagle:

    I think it's official...ST has a "man-crush" on Colt. :)

  29. chawan_cut:

All I can say is WOW, 20 videos in one day.

    WOW.

  30. Garret:

    gigi,

If you look at the photos of Colt that the Advertiser provides (great job Eugene!) or the videos from the Princess (great job again by her), you'll see that Colt does not look in bad shape.

His agent says that he's been lifting weights hard and that the added weight is spread evenly around his body. Of course, agents are NOT the most unbiased sources, so you should look at the Advertiser's photos and videos and judge for yourself.

  31. Garret:

Joe Paterno publicly blew off Bill Clinton. To me this wasn't that big of a deal until he started talking so openly about it.

Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, a noted Republican, says he thought long and hard before deciding against greeting Bill Clinton when the former president visited campus on behalf of his wife's presidential campaign.

Clinton pitched the Penn State ties of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday during a stop in State College, reminding the mostly youthful audience that her father and brother both played football at Penn State. In fact, brother Hugh Rodham, a 1972 graduate, was a backup quarterback under Paterno.

"I had a little bit of soul search I had to do when President Clinton was here the other day," Paterno said Saturday. He said he felt that perhaps he should welcome Clinton out of respect for his status as a former president.

But in the end, Paterno said, "I didn't want to get into that because of my situation, because I couldn't vote for either one of them because I'm a Republican." He later declined to say whether he was supporting Sen. John McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee.

In an earlier article you mentioned other boys FROM Hawaii that participated in Pro Day but didn't play for UH (Brenan Carvalho and Jeremy Inferera). How did they do??

  35. FloridaTed:

    Morning/afternoon, Tsaikos and Tsai-Meister.

All this hard work and amazing info is very much appreciated.

  36. Ronnie:

Brian - If you are reading the blog, please check your earthlink email... You have mail.

  37. gigi-hawaii ©:

The photos show that Colt looks good. I haven't watched the videos yet, because one blogger said he had to reboot his computer after clicking on one of the videos. Others have said there are glitches. But I like the photos very much.

  38. Thomas Mui:

    ST, Leila, et al.

Great job, great coverage, and I hope you recover from the jet lag.

Happy to see CB taking charge re: locker room.

Hope the talent scouts look at ST's singing abilities too!

  39. Maverick:

Great to hear about Colt's "Beefing UP" and hopefully quick recovery for the surgery.

Looking at our past players that enter into the draft season, they tend to transform quickly with vast training and refined diet, as one example is Regan Mauia. He quickly changed into a stronger built, leaner body in just the Winter season.

Why can't this be excercised while still playing in College? Is there too much rice and gravy surrounding us for tempation?

  40. addahknowjoe:

    ST- You are most welcome!

  49. Da Punchbowl Kid:

That good bye to Terry and Colt Brennan sounded very poignant. It must have been a hard good bye.

    Princess Leila:

  52. homey ®:

ST and Princess Leila - Thanks so much for the reports and the videos. It was interesting to see the numbers posted by the participants. I will huddle with bulla when I see him to go over the numbers.

    Thanks again!

SteveM - Just read your comments about Safari. As you already know, the browser first loads the html of the website/webpage and starts parsing the contents to build a DOM tree. As it is parsing it reads the stylesheet (if there is one) and finds out what it wants to do.

The browser needs to make a decision, does it continue parsing the html or does it load the commands of the stylesheet?

This is where I think your browser is having problems. It doesn't always load the stylesheet, therefore you get an incomplete webpage as far as colors go.

    Switch to Firefox.

  60. ralvic:

    Good Morning

    Nice work ST and staff.

I'm looking at the player stats. And their measurements and 40 times. But pound for pound Brad Kalimoku has me saying wow. Here's a player that measures 220 pounds and benched 225 -35 times, runs a 4.8,and he had a 34" vertical. How good are those numbers?
To be that strong, fast and have that hop is pretty impressive.
I had my opinions on who underachieved, but that's not important because(it's so obvious who it is).

  61. SteveM:

homey -- (re: your post #53) Thanks for the technobabble, but switching to Firefox, although practical, is cop-out and not acceptable to me under these circumstances. You, as a programmer know what I mean.

Safari (which is used by 1 in 6 people here on The Warrior Beat) was working fine from Thursday until Sunday afternoon around 1800. The main HA home page displays correctly -- but not this blog now. This indicates that it is not an internal Safari issue but that some erroneous tweak was made that should be correctable.

Now if Safari never worked, that would be a different story...

  62. homey ®:

    Keomaka's numbers are impressive.

Gotta give a shout out to Nate Rusell. Good to see a young man pursue his dreams. Best of luck to him.

  63. Addahknowsports:

Is anyone else besides the Addahknows going to Wena's concert this Sunday?

  64. 3-Prong:

It should not be thought of as a sad day with the Brennans saying goodbye. All of Hawaii should be happy as Colt finally chases his dream. Hawaii's adopted "son" will come home one day after what we pray is a celebrated professional career, or maybe sooner. Can you imagine Colt coming home to play in a Pro Bowl? I Believe.

  65. homey ®:

SteveM - They are working with a different software (Wordpress) and it could be how the coding i.e. html, javascript, php, css is arranged and how the safari browser handles it. I still have problems loading the blog with Opera.

As a former programmer, now a security guard, whenever a new OS or version upgrade is installed the programmers are given a detailed list of changes that are required to the existing code in order for it to work with the new OS or upgrade.

If an entirely new software is purchased and it is found to not be compatible with existing equipment then new equipment will need to be purchased or an upgrade to the old equipment is done.

For example, there is no way to play some PC games can be played on an older PC without upgrading or changing your video card (and memory).

Same with the blog. If the tekkies at the 'Tizer can't figure out your problem then you will have to live with it or change to Firefox.

As I mentioned, I use Opera sometimes but can't use it to see the blog. I don't expect the tekkies to fix it to accommodate me so I just use Firefox. I haven't dug deep but the problem could be with Opera...

  84. gigi-hawaii ©:

Stretch, I would love to do the Friday dinner with you guys, but hubby will be coming home late -- like around 8 pm.

  85. homey ®:

Stretch - Are there dimples on them? Anyway, gotta ask al about that cause he is the marbles expert.

  86. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    STEPHEN and TEAM- WOW WOWOW!

Mahalo for making the Pro Day real for all of us back home.

ALL THE BEST TO OUR WARRIORS- PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE!!!

    hiho!

  87. Stretch:

gigi - no excuses, I don't get back from Kauai until 9pm and will be showing up at that time.

  88. Kekoa:

Homey ~ If Jason Rivers is given the opportunity to play at that level, the numbers will be in the stats he produces for his team. The stop watch is sometimes over- rated. It doesn't measure the heart of the Warrior.

    Go Warriors!

  89. gigi-hawaii ©:

Stretch, 9 pm? Good luck with finding food.

    Hi Liz!

  90. homey ®:

Not to be technical or anything but a nano second is a billionth of a second so it wouldn't have made a difference in the 40 yard time.

  92. LizKauai [Believer]:

Hi gigi! You should go to Sam Snead's.
If you can't make the Tsai-ko call, look at this:

    Prime Rib Special:

I just got a few pix of my granddaughter and threw them up on my blog (click my name).

xs-homey - ohhh... you talk good techie ;-)
    Bwahahaha!

  93. MeiLing:

Wasn't JRivs the player who was asked to get a medical exam for his back at the Combine? Wonder if that is something he had to have addressed.

K, homey & whoever was talkin' 'bout Billy Kaui & Country Comfort, I pulled out my CDs and had to listen this morning. The Best of Billy Kaui, re-released on CD, is a great showcase of his voice. (He does sound a little like Bobby Caldwell to me.)

Still haven't gone thru all of the videos, but it makes me so happy for the guys who were at Pro Day and continuing to work hard to make it to the pros.
    IMUA WARRIORS!

Any feedback from JD on Colt's suggestion about the locker room?

  94. homey ®:

Kekoa - True dat. But right now the stopwatch is Rivers enemy. Hopefully, the scouts will look at Rivers big games film and see his tenacity

  95. Stretch:

gigi - going to eat sushi at Kintaro first, then come back to Honolulu. Going there to have a few and talk story.

  96. homey ®:

Mei Ling - Yep, I mentioned BK and Country Comfort. My favorite BK song is It Doesnt Matter Anyhow.

  97. Loa:

    whatsup gang!
anyone check out spring practice today?
is it me or does the site seems faster today

  98. LizKauai [Believer]:

Ohhh- Stretch- I'm drooling now. Have to eat more spicy beef jerky to kill the craving for Kintaro's.
I'll be working the Rotary track meet at Vidinha Stadium on Friday night.

Country Comfort music- good fodder for Karaoke harmonies. Stretch- does Crazy Karaoke have lots of Hawaiian popular music? I would LOVE for da girls to take turns of Follow Your Road!!!

  99. homey ®:

Loa - It's you and the site is faster today. I didn't check out practice today. I'll be going the week of the 14th or 21st. jojo mentioned a poolside lunch afterwards. I'm sure swimming is optional.

Did you know that jojo can outswim (distance and speed) most Tsaiko's?

  100. homey ®:

Hello there XLiz - I can just hear "Waimanalo Blues" being sung in perfect harmony...

  101. Chicken Grease:

Ah, there's the post. Good morning Tsaikos!

Praying for Colt. Looks like it's a little worse than I thought -- 4 months recurperation? Yikes.

  102. Loa:

homey - thats really good news cause you know i'm pretty slow.
let me know what day you decide to attend practice.
wow, i didn't know that about jojo, does she surf too?

  103. homey ®:

Chicken Grease - Four months recuperation for Colt? Did I miss something? Did they find out it was a complete tear and not a partial?

  104. homey ®:

Loa - I don't think she surfs. Something about sharks...

  105. BG:

Incredible work by ST, PL, and Tanner (plus the support folks). THAT is sports coverage going the extra mile! OMG...20 vids!!! Just shooting them was exhausting enough! To edit 20 of them is unbelievable!

HA Team...we are so blessed to have you. Plenty heart felt Mahalos...

  106. BG:

CG...it was reported as "8-12 weeks" for recovery. He'll still be able to work out some as he's healing.

  107. Chicken Grease:

Mmm. As DeNiro might say, "I heard t'ings." I coulda' sworn I heard "4 months" on Portnoy's show today. Regardless, hip injury is no joke. That's gradual healing.

Listening to AM1500 on Wednesdays will eventually make one hear "things"...

  109. Chicken Grease:

Haha, true, true. Heck, I hope take Colt only a month to start feeling great. I like Portnoy's show, but, sometimes you just like call 'em and tell 'em, "OK, 'NUFF ALREADY!!!! WE GET THE POINT, SHESSH!"

  110. BowsForever:

Unless we hear otherwise, I think the 8-12 week recovery timeframe will still give Colt time to prepare for fall camp.

  111. A-House:

Surgery recovery time depends on the location of the injury - all internal surgery, regardless of location, takes much more time to heal than the exterior cuts.

Colt's case is where the surgery will deal with use every time he walks and thus "add" to the healing time versus an abdominal surgery where only lifting is discouraged for 8 or more weeks.

  112. las vegas:

    Shhhhhhh
    12 weeks is 4 months
no tell everybody, they might panic

A footnote to all the articles and videos about pro day is what impression it leaves on the current players watching. If I was a player watching. And seeing that your coach is also at pro day in support. And seeing the interest and compassion of the community urging on their players at pro day it would be very inspiring. And maybe encouraging.Because I would think some players, who see them selves at pro day in the future, would look at the times and measurements of their former team mates and try to do one better..In awe these players,as they prepare for the upcoming season, and dream about the future, the pro day and attention surrounding is very motivating to watch. Good luck to all Warrior in their career paths-and dreams.

Good to see A-House post! Or was that Mrs. A-House and she forgot to change the name.

  119. homey ®:

  120. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Bad News.

    No mo' kulolo.

    It had to happen eventually.
The taro shortage finally caught up with my neighbor. She does not know when she will be able to make kulolo again - we're talking months, not weeks. Sigh.

I guess I will bring Oahu Korean fuud and Kauai manju to the Crazy Karaoke on the 19th and the Tsai-ko Gate on the 26th.

    shucks....

    xs-homey - huh?

  122. homey ®:

  123. maryann(e):

    Homey,
    Geico is not funny

  124. LizKauai [Believer]:

    maryann(e) - high five - re geico.

  125. maryann(e):

why does the gecko speak in a Aussie accent?
    Government
    Employees
    insurance
    COmpany

  126. homey ®:

I have a simple mind so they are funny to me. :x

  127. homey ®:

LV - because it's an Australian lizard. :p

  128. KickinPancakeDig:

I was shocked at Rivers bench press- only 8 reps. I also have a lower back problem, but it is a current shoulder and forearm problem why I personally don't do bench press anymore, so I don't think the back would be the reason for the minimal bench press count. About 2 years ago, as a 38-year old and at 5 11 1/2, 195 lb. with small wrists, and who only does 'maintainance (45 min) lifting 2x/wk- I could do 225 lbs - 5X. And frankly, I'm likely on the weaker side for the average 30-something, 200 pounder at 24 FItness.

  129. maryann(e):

    Mr Homey,
Wrong as usual, the specis seen on TV speaking with an Aussie accent is a Indo-Pacific gecko of the genus Hemidactylus garnotii, commonly found in Vietnam and Cambodia.
Thusly, it stands to reason that the gecko would speak in a fruity French accent, assuming the gecko would speak any language at all

  130. WreckinEyez:

To homey they all look the same adobo style...

  131. homey ®:

KickinPancakeDig - I take it you are a volleyball player?

I too was surprised but maybe he didn't concentrate on his BP numbers and tried to improve his speed. BTW, small wrists?

  132. homey ®:

LV - ah, I see, so I would expect XLiz to have a Korean accent...

  133. las vegas:

    KickinPancakeDig,
    last time I was 5 11 1/2 and 195lbs, I was in 6th grade.
Come to think of it, I may have been 38 years old by the time i finished 6th grade too .

  134. MeiLing:

    BHF2,

You'll have to give us a report on Spring training today.

  135. LizKauai [Believer]:

Every time I talk to her, I feel like buying her a drinkie for $20 bucks

  137. homey ®:

Wreck - Speaking of adobo. Have you ate the filipino food at Mililani Golf Course? Not bad. Some of the food, like the sari sari, are cooked when you order so you gotta order in advance if you don't want to wait.

  138. WreckinEyez:

Imagine if Liz spoke swahili on the blog...

    "good morning click click click,

    Click click news today click"

  139. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Oh heck- we're all wrong...
    At least according to Wikipedia

The company's ads sometimes focus on its reptilian mascot, the GEICO gecko, a talking Day Gecko created by The Martin Agency and most recently a CGI creature generated by Framestore CFC. The gecko first appeared in 1999 during the Screen Actors Guild strike that prevented the use of live actors.[5] In the original commercial, where the gecko pleads for people to stop calling him in error, mistaking gecko for geico, he was voiced by Kelsey Grammer. In the subsequent commercials, the gecko speaks with a Cockney accent, because it would be unexpected, according to Martin Agency's Steve Bassett. Jake Wood, a British actor and comedian, is the current voice of the GEICO gecko. In current commercials the gecko's accent is more working-class, perhaps in an effort to further "humanize" him.[6] "As computer animation got better and as we got to know the character better, we did a few things," says Steve Bassett, creative director at The Martin Agency. "We wanted to make him a little more guy-next-door. And he looks a lot more real than he's looked before."[5]

  140. WreckinEyez:

Whao, Filipino food at a golf course resturant? That is a big step for the cusine.

Hi maryann(e) -- long time no see. Impressive gecko knowledge. Are you still working as a bar bouncer or have you moved on to academics?

    Wreck - click click...ROTFLMFAO!

  154. WreckinEyez:

Did anyone see "hell's kitchen" last night... stupid people... How the heck are you going to cook something when you don't know the menu...

  155. LizKauai [Believer]:

Actually, the geico gecko is a Madagascar Day Gecko. When I was in Portland, went to a big pet store and I spent my time looking at the reptiles. They had a very beautifully-colored large lizard that could have been one of these.
    Also had bull pythons... eeeuw

  156. maryann(e):

    Homey,
The 2003 US census bureau reports that the average American household has an average of 3.4 television sets.
The same 2003 report states that the average Filipino-American household has 3.1 television sets but only one may be working at any one time.

Oh, so thats why no can watch live.

  157. KickinPancakeDig:

    homey,
yes I play volleyball, and even when healthy, I could never successfully do a hand pancake- I usually just dived and punched up the ball with my fist. I actually have made a few digs with my foot flush to the court, and several times with the inside of the foot soccer-style. As for the small wrists- when I did an HMSA health pass several years ago, they measured 'frame-size' by tape measuring my wrists- I am right on the boarderline between 'small' and 'medium'. Once in a great while when I tried to 'Max' on the bench press, my wrists have the hardest time handling the weight, and according to bench press max projection charts, I couldn't max what I should, based on how many reps I did of lower weights. Ex. 205/10X. 267 lbs estimated max. . Actually, I should have said I have smallish and weak wrists.

  158. homey ®:

Wreck - I saw that show last night. Did he really throw up?

Maryann(e) - I actually enjoy watching American Idol and America's Next Top Model.

  159. al:

homey....dimples on marbles. after playing with your marbles for years it does become a bit worn and pitted. so could happen dependent upon how often you play with your balls, er...marbles, i mean.

  160. homey ®:

KickinPancakeDig - I rather watch (Wahine) volleyball than play it. The net looks to high for me.

Interesting about the bench press chart. It's only a projection so don't sweat it. I'll ask bulla about the correlation between wrist size and bench press prowess.

    Thanks for the feedback.

    Serious question-
Prepping for the April 26 Football, Tsai-ko fix.

On Friday, the 25th, the Metro Honolulu Rotary Club is having a soiree at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel at 5pm. The theme is "Remembering the Backyard Kanikapila" and will feature Martin Pahinui, Eddie Kamai, George Kuo and Aaron Mahi. Dinner is included - $75 including 1 drink.

Anyone interested in going? I normally don't have the budget for this kind of thing but since I am coming for the 26th, I may try to make it for this too. Of course, I am also looking for a ride and a buddy to go with ;-) (and a place to crash afterwards) Mebbe I Believe will want to come.

  184. KickinPancakeDig:

    homey,
Long arms (does JRivers have long arms, particularly for his height), may also factor into the relatively low bench press figure. Just like guys with short arms pumping out tons of push-ups, on the flip side you'll never see a guy with longer-than-average wings setting any bench press records. I think I remember hearing that Manute Bol, with his eagle wingspan, at one time couldn't even do one pushup!

Interesting you would ask. Several times, now, when I visit a link then return to the blog, the blog locks up.

For instance, I viewed the links posted by sj in new tabs. Upon my return (I did get completely out of the links) this blog was locked up. I had to close the window and reenter the HA site.

    It has happened several times.

Thank you for your continued work to make this blog a much more comfortable place to visit and live!

  235. wafan:

    LizK . . .

I have to agree with GG and Homey. The "brown" names with links are almost identical with the rest of the black lettering.

Over the past few days GG's request for a blue name (those having a link) made sense. Perhaps, since the techsters are unable or unwilling to make that change the underlined name might be a workable solution.

Their earlier attempt to use a larger type size for names with a link was a workable solution, too. But, you had to be able to recognize the larger type size. ltalicized, Underlined, Bolded, or a different color (other than brown) would work.

When you fill out the reply and add your website, it turns your name into a link to that website. The url does not appear with your comment (as it did on the old blog). Instead, your name is brown instead of black and hotlinked.

  256. LizKauai [Believer]:

I noticed something interesting. On the old blog, if you put in a whole bunch of "enters" at the end of your comments then sent it in the additional spaces would show up. On this new blog no matter how many enters you insert after you last paragraph the additional spaces do not appear.

I guess that will alleviate some of the super-long comments of nothing but empty space.

This is a pretty odd policy to me. The LA Times forbids its sports staff from participating in NCAA tournament pools...even though they regularly have stories about gambling on sports events!

“The LA Times sports staff has been banned from partaking in NCAA tournament pools. Not really a big deal - some companies clamp down on such matters. Except when you take into account the gambling column that the Times regularly runs. Mildly interesting, right?” Here is today’s gambling column about the Lakers and the postseason. Hmmmm.

So we eamiled the LA Times Sports Editor, Randy Harvey, and asked what was up. His response after the jump.

“We have created Behind the Lines to explain betting lines. Whether fans bet or not on sporting events, virtually all of them want to know who’s favored, by how much and why. We try to give people that information.

If our staff members want to fill out NCAA brackets to test their knowledge against others on the staff, I don’t have a problem with that. But their work could be perceived as biased by our increasingly knowledgeable and skeptical public if there are financial benefits involved with our participation in pools. I don’t want any of our staff members placed in that position, even though I trust them to behave professionally in all circumstances.”

  276. Garret:

More on the Leinart situation. When I was driving today (I drove for 4+ hours today) I was listening to LA sports talk on the radio and thought it was interesting that it has been confirmed that the women in the hot tub with Leinart graduated high school in 2006, so they are probably all 19. A few could be 20, but all are definitely underage for drinking.

"Matt called me early Monday morning to tell me that those pictures were coming out," Whisenhunt told reporters Wednesday at the league meetings. "He was obviously upset about it. But to me that's progress, the fact you did communicate with me.

"We talked about the level of scrutiny, not only that position, but who he is just because of having played at a high-profile college team and having been a Heisman Trophy winner. You would be naïve if you didn't think those things would be of interest. We obviously reinforced there's a standard we hold all our players to that we expect them to keep. I'm obviously disappointed that those pictures showed up."

  277. Garret:

Nice recognition for the WAC with Fresno State praised while Florida State is compared negatively to Fresno State. Here is the Fresno State portion of the article.

Fresno State is building from a 9-4 season and may be favored to win its first outright Western Athletic Conference title since 1999.

Spring forward: Fresno State's schedule is built to kill, but the wounds might be self-inflicted. Bulldogs Coach Pat Hill is now opening at Rutgers on Labor Day after Kansas State pulled out of a Sept. 6 commitment. Fresno State then has a week off before hosting Wisconsin on Sept. 13. Then it's at Toledo and at UCLA.

If Fresno State goes 4-0 in nonconference against Rutgers, Wisconsin, Toledo and UCLA, well, that would make the Bulldogs a top-10 team.

  278. Garret:

Very short report on the USC Pro Day.

It was a big day for linebacker Keith Rivers, a potential top-10 pick who was particularly impressive in the vertical leap and 40-yard dash. He ran the 40 in an announced 4.51 seconds -- although the results of scouts varied -- and actually reached higher than the top end of the vertical-leap pole. His leap was measured at a remarkable 42 1/2 inches.

Any concerns teams might have had about the speed of running back Chauncey Washington were probably put to rest with his 4.35 in the 40, the fastest time of the day. NFLDraftScout.com projects Washington as a seventh-round pick or free agent.

Defensive end Lawrence Jackson increased his vertical leap by 3 1/2 inches from his 31-inch effort at the scouting combine. He is among five Trojans who realistically could be picked in the first round, along with Rivers, defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis, tackle Sam Baker, and tight end Fred Davis.

  279. Garret:

I've heard of the "system QB" criticism before, but never heard of "system CB"!

Eagles coach Andy Reid laughed off a suggestion that CB Asante Samuel is a “system cornerback.” Samuel, a graduate of UCF and Boyd Anderson High in Fort Lauderdale, had 16 interceptions the past two seasons with New England and signed for six years and $57 million with the Eagles. “If he’s a system player, then we probably all need to start doing his system, because he was the most productive corner in the league this year,”

    Benji just signed now?

West Virginia University has signed two more football prospects to the binding national letter-of-intent, Coach Bill Stewart announced Tuesday evening.

Those are running back Mark Rodgers and offensive lineman Benji Kemoeatu, for whom WVU had to travel great distances. Both are expected to bolster depth at their respective positions.

Kemoeatu, who reportedly is rated a four-star recruit, played both guard and center at Kahuku High. He’s a two-time Hawaii first-time all-state selection and a two-time OIA East first-team pick.

According to his resume, he was rated as the No. 2 football prospect in the state of Hawaii among all players and also among the Top 12 nationally among offensive guards. Kemoeatu helped the Red Raiders to state championships in 2005 and 2006.

Stewart said, “Benji is the biggest man on the island of Hawaii. He is extremely strong and physical and will be a great addition to our offensive line. He brings a toughness that we are looking for with our linemen.”

He has two brothers playing in the NFL. Maake Kemoeatu is with the Carolina Panthers and Chris with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

WVU signed 23 recruits on Feb. 6, then signed running back Zach Hulse, and now Rodgers and Kemoeatu.

Nevada was going to ban beer sales at their stadium...but the negative response by the public got them to change their mind.

University of Nevada, Reno President Milt Glick announced Tuesday that beer sales will not be banned in Mackay Stadium after results of a survey found most fans wanted alcohol available at the games.

Glick was considering banning beer sales because disturbances by unruly fans in past years discouraged some people from coming to the games.

The university released survey results from the 1,155 responses, including 489 from season ticket holders.

Fifty-one percent said alcohol sales had a negative effect on families trying to enjoy the game, Glick said. However,

78 percent said they supported the continued sale of beer.

  283. Garret:

Getting a piece of the concessions revenue sure pays off for Nevada. Look at what they get from beer sales alone!

Glick said he does not yet know what beefed-up security would cost, offset by the $150,000 the university earns from the sale of beer at the stadium.

    KHNL report on Pro Day.

"This workout is a chance for us to come out here and showcase our strengths and I think the guys tested really well, we had a real intense workout set up and I think that people could walk away with a lot of respect for what we were trying to do today," said former quarterback Colt Brennan.

"At the combine I thought I had a solid day, I definitely knew I could do better and that's why I came out here today. I definitely proved myself and ran the fastest time and that's all I was aiming for and I succeeded my expectations," said former receiver Ryan Grice-Mullen.

"Had they all been a hundred percent today we we would've been ooin and awwin' everybody but that's life and I think considering their tight hamstrings we had a great day," said Brennan

"I think we did a lot of good for ourselves, and we miss Hawai'i, take care aloha."

  286. Garret:

Colt's injury is being factored in draft analyst reports. They are making it sound MUCH more serious than it really is!

There are a pretty good amount of middle of the draft quarterbacks for this year, such as Andre Woodson, Chad Henne, and John David Booty. They could draft one of those guys and mark them as Delhomme’s successor. Or, they could take a risk on someone like Colt Brennan, who will be having surgery.

  287. Garret:

From the “Timing Is Everything” Department comes this: Rookie quarterback Colt Brennan was one of the more highly touted college prospects six months ago. A lot has changed since then. The Hawaii quarterback was posting big numbers in June Jones’ gimmick offense, but was shredded at the Sugar Bowl by Georgia and now he is going to undergo hip surgery that has a minimum recovery time of eight to 12 weeks. Once thought to be a mid-round pick with some potential upside, don’t be surprised to see Brennan still on the board in sixth or seventh round of the draft in a little more than three weeks.

    sjmacro,
Thanks for the update about this morning's training & the pics! Aloha to BHF2!

Wonder how the receivers are doing? It always amazed me to see those guys with their "soft hands" catching the ball. Watching the video of CJ at Pro Day showed that skill. Who was the receivers' coach last season?

  289. Garret:

Funny that the head coaches with a background on offense were the ones who voted against letting the defense have communication devices.

The owners meeting produced a little bit of a stir Tuesday when the league voted 25-7 to allow communication devices in the helmets of defensive players. At issue was whether it was feasible to have one defensive player wear the device. The measure put to a vote would allow different players to wear the radio helmet, but only one of them being on the field at any given time. Ironically, all seven teams that voted against the measure have head coaches with an offensive background – the Seahawks (Mike Holmgren), Buccaneers (Jon Gruden), Raiders (Lane Kiffin), Eagles (Andy Reid), Rams (Scott Linehan), Redskins (Jim Zorn) and Packers (Mike McCarthy). The Vikings voted in favor of the proposal, which got one more vote than the 24 needed for passage.

  290. Garret:

This draft analyst needs to update his records on Bess. I think he's way too negative when he thinks that Bess has only a 50% chance of being drafted and that the other UH WRs have less of a chance to even be drafted!

Davone Bess, Hawaii--The best of the lot of Hawaii wideouts in this draft, but he’s undersized (5’10”, 194) and runs in the 4.7s. He does have very good quickness and decent hands, but he often struggled to get open in the wide-open run and shoot sets they ran in college, and he’ll see a lot more traffic and size across from him in the NFL. 50/50 that he hears his name called.

Johnson's decision comes after receivers Colin Peek and D.J. Donley announced plans to transfer and another receiver, Greg Smith, was moved to A-back in spring drills.

Amazing that the Army awarded a $300 mil contract for ammo to a new company to supply munitions to Afghanistan's army and police forces...the new company is headed by a 22-year-old and his VP is a massuer! Not surprisingly, the Afghan forces had a lot of problem with the ammo.

Analyst predicts that Wii Fit will have HUGE sales in the US. It is great that it so exceeded expectations in sales in Japan...except that meant that they didn't have enough to sell in the US and had to push the release date back from January to May!

Looks like Nintendo is going to be making their biggest advertising push ever when Wii Fit comes out.

Al, today I ordered 3 Michael Buble CDs from Amazon at 40+% off and also got FREE shipping. Can't wait to get them! Thanks for introducing me to him.

I also mailed my 2 books to Amazon today, because they said they were out of stock.

  310. gigi-hawaii ©:

BTW, my younger daughter knows who Buble is, although I didn't. She said he is popular.

  311. gigi-hawaii ©:

The Sunday buffet at Sam Snead's is $19.95. Hubby and I are looking forward to it. Our first time there.

  312. Stretch:

gigi - I heard the Friday evening buffet is better than the weekend one. You should check it out.

  313. gigi-hawaii ©:

the Sunday BRUNCH buffet, I meant to say.

  314. gigi-hawaii ©:

Stretch, we rarely go out on Friday night, because hubby is so tired from work. We usually seek entertainment on Sunday -- movie matinees, opera matinees, and entertain friends and family at lunch time.

  315. Stretch:

gigi - i can guarantee you the entertainment on Friday night will beat out anything you can do on Sunday

  316. gigi-hawaii ©:

We are not senior citizens yet, but we are getting there. Getting old means more day time activities.

  317. gigi-hawaii ©:

Anyway, it was very nice of you to put down the deposit for the karaoke as well as for Tree Tops. You didn't have to but you did. Very kind of you.

  318. Stretch:

SteveM, how is your sleep apnea? Last time, you said the doctor told you it was "severe." Are you receiving treatment?

Mike Tsai said he got a machine for apnea, but gave up on it because it was worse than the apnea.

  321. gigi-hawaii ©:

the TREATMENT was worse than the apnea...

    Ralvic,

This design is far from final. We're combing the entire site as we go and cleaning things up slowly.

    I vote for GREEN

  324. gigi-hawaii ©:

For the first time, I saw Mike Tsai's website, "Hike with Mike." I thought it was very thorough and interesting. My daughter hikes quite frequently. I'll tell her about Mike's site.

  325. koakane:

    gigi,

concur with stretch you will have a fun time.

come for the dinna and leave when you want. Kekoa and I would be happy to have you and hubby grace us with your presence and I sure the others would like to talk with you in person sometimes.

sorry, Koakane, but hubby will get home around 8 pm on Friday. He leaves work around 6 pm and then shops at Costco -- every Friday without fail.

Then he has to get up early on Saturday to report to work again.

He works 6 days a week.

i heard that the CPAP apparatus is rather cumbersome.

stevem....try this. "breathe right" strips and a mouthpiece designed to jut the jaw forward. these simple stuff aid in keeping a clear breathing passage throughout the night and your snoring won't wake the neighbor's dog.

your dentist may have those mouthpieces.

  332. oxtail soup:

An updated post today from R51,someone who may be a scout and has been claiming for months that Colt is the best prospect (and most underrated by the media) in the draft. His thread goes back to the Senior Bowl.

"Teams realize that Colt Brennan is by far the best overall quarterback selection available and will look for the opportunity to select him before another team drafts him."

He made this post AFTER Brennan's disclosure regarding his surgery.
He said Colt's stock was soaring during the Senior Bowl, not sinking. I sure hope it's true!!!

ESPN did quote JJ (during the UH/Washington game) as saying Colt's stock would rise when the teams sat down and started viewing game film...

  333. al:

then you might want to check out "il divo". four young tenors that oprah help unite. i heard the women scream over them.

btw, homey. you got me listening to billy and country comfort today. bring back the memories.

    I hope it's not true!

  337. gigi-hawaii ©:

    Al, never heard of vandross.

  338. oxtail soup:

Here's the site for R51's comments (and part of his post):

    http://boards.espn.go.com/boards/mb/mb?sport=ncaa&id=ncf&tid=2282139&tsn=61

"Colt Brennan continues to impress NFL representatives from teams across the nation. With his quick release and increasing size and strength, many are taking notice of Brennan as a potential early round draft pick.

While news of a scheduled surgery to repair a hip injury sustained during the week leading up to the Senior Bowl has been released to the press, many draft parties on location were quick to point out that Brennan would have ample time to recover prior to seeing playing time on the next level. Regardless of whether Brennan is selected as a first round pick in this year's draft, he will be given some time to recoup.

Aside from the effects of imminent surgery, the draft stock of Colt Brennan continues to move higher. More and more are taking notice of the fact that his passing accuracy is no fluke because it is evident that this quarterback prospect has the most accurate arm out of all of the QB draft prospects in the nation.

While many of the so called national draft analysts and commentators online and on television have credited Brennan's success in college to a four wide passing scheme of June Jones, many draft parties now realize that Brennan's success was not solely a product of the offense that he played in. Time and time again, Colt Brennan from the University of Hawaii has demonstrated the quickest release, the highest accuracy and completion totals, the most developed downfield vision and judgment, and the ability to overcome adversity and criticism."

  339. gigi-hawaii ©:

    wonderful for Colt!!!

    way to go!

  340. Jason:

My Dad had a CPAP machine. I remember my oldest niece, when she was a toddler, used to get so scared of that thing.

It always looked cumbersome to me, but my Dad was always one to fall asleep very easily.

  341. LizKauai:

oxtail soup- I believe that any scout worth his salt will see what we know to be true about Colt Brennan. He is the real deal and has everything it takes to be a great NFL player.
I believe he will be the next Joe Montana and get his start with the 49ers.

Koakane, I get whatever tripe - usually bleached and cut into pieces. Do you mean ginger? hmmm. I haven't tried to make tripe stew yet, just the Korean dipping one. I like tripe stew and poi (with plenty chili pepper water).

  342. SteveM:

gigi and Al -- (re: sleep apnea) I was scheduled to go back for a mask fitting and second test. But I decided to cancel for now. BTW, I diagnosed as "extremely severe".

however, the vids showed him dong those footwork drills. i mean, sheesh. i always felt he had happy feet but them feet of his were elated. and his arm flexibility wasn't restricted at all with all that added bulk.

all this with that hip pain thing. sheesh. double sheesh.

Nitey Nite and sweet dreams, ka kou!

To some of the football experts in this blogsite, (please forgive my ignorance) why is good footwork important in the assessment of a QB's skills?

Does having "happy feet" mean a QB is able to set up his throw more quickly? Does it affect the accuracy, velocity of a pass?

  374. maryann(e):

    ata gone?
with Aloha also gone, Hawaiian will raise pricess
    as why hard

  375. al:

    ox....you answered your own question.

first, in my opinion. "happy feet" is a very good sign of great athleticism. regardless of sport. boxing, soccer, basketball, baseball, football, karate, you name it. the feet set up the rest of the body.

ability to set up to throw, scramble, drop back, sprint out or run for your life. the quicker you can get from point a to b the quicker you can read and pass. the quicker your feet the quicker you set up to throw. also, throwing in any sport one must have good footwork as a base to throw from.

    you get the picture.

  376. al:

scary maryanne and i think alike.

  379. al:

pacific ocean up the colorado river perhaps?

  380. LizKauai:

oxtail soup- I'm still a novice too but my take is that the offense is all about timing. Colt and the fab 4 were unusual as their instincts were at a very high level and they would do what they did from shotgun after the play started and according to what the defense was doing. For regular earthlings, it is about taking snaps from under center, dropping back 3,5,7 steps and going from there. The QB had to give the play time to develop, so his footwork bought that time and kept him out of the grasp of defenders.

I did not agree with the combine announcers who said footwork was more important than accuracy (please ignore the uncaught balls). That was BS to me. Colt's accuracy was THE most impressive quality that day. No one could touch him. No one will touch him. imho, of course !

  381. las vegas:

Al san, more sumo (Yaku is a member of the yokozuna deliberation council) realistically a bunch of out of touch fuddie-duddies

Mitsuru Yaku visited the Shibatayama stable and Chiganoura stables yesterday as part of the Association's effort to prevent another rikishi from dying in the practice ring by establishing a committee of outsiders. After the visits, Yaku stuck true to form and promptly criticized Asashoryu for his actions proceeding his yusho at the Haru basho. Regarding the Yokozuna's guts pose (Japan's term for an athlete raising and clinching his fist in victory) after dispatching Hakuho from the dohyo, Yaku said, "After a bout where you've just exerted all of your power and won, you should take the high road. It takes away from the win otherwise." Regarding Asashoryu's shouting to the Osaka crowd in their own dialect "Thank you each and every time!" during his yusho interview, Yaku stated, "There's no place for that in the sumo arena."

Asashoryu was not available for comment, but he did indicate that he had fallen ill shortly after an exhibition event held at the Ise Shrine in Mie Prefecture on March 30th. The Yokozuna participated in morning practice by guiding Sekiwake Kotoshogiku in butsukari-geiko and then calling Wakanoho into the ring for some instruction, but later on he said that he felt sick and may check himself into a hospital to get checked out. "I'll probably go to the hospital tomorrow and at least get an intravenous drip. Depending on how I feel, I may check myself into the hospital for some tests," he indicated to those close to him.

  382. oxtail soup:

    Liz,
Wasn't it during the Combine that some QB was getting raves on his footwork while he sprayed his throws on the field?

I was watching the UH/WA game again, was amazed that Colt's feet were all over the place when a play unfolded, and was wondering why...

    Thanks for the info!

  383. al:

it is getting rather silly in sumo huh?

  384. L10pc:

    SteveM,

I'm interested in coming to the Karaoke Call on the 19th. Would I just need to pay the $15 there?

  385. LizKauai:

oxtail soup- yep. Flacco (the tall one that emerged during the Senior Bowl) was getting raves for his armstrength - but he overthrew all the receivers. The announcers talked about footwork and said - don't pay attention to the missed throws, the scouts are looking at footwork. Then later on, a list of the top 5 QB's (according to the dingbats) was flashed on the screen. Strengths and weaknesses for each were listed. If I remember correctly, Flacco's weakness was footwork. DUH.

Colt's candor about his hip and the fact that it's getting taken care of early, is, to me, a good thing. He's acting like a big boy with a clean slate - not hiding and fooling. No smoke and mirrors, he's the real thing and the real teams know it.

ok. now I HAVE to get some sleep!

las vegas and al- you guys have me all fired up about sumo now.
Sheesh, I gotta catch up on 15 or more years of what I missed! The last thing I remember is Mainoumi the menehune!!!

  386. Jason:

If you have bad footwork, that affects everything negatively. But perfect footwork does not mean a good throw, it's just the first thing that's needed.

First we have the drop back. Proper footwork gives the QB the proper depth — pocket protections and timing with the receivers can be affected if the QB is too deep or too shallow in the pocket. Then comes the plant: the (right-handed) QB will plant his right foot, shifting his weight on this leg while moving the left foot underneath the body for a nice solid stance. Then the QB steps forward with his lead (left) foot, pushing off his plant (right) foot to get his body into the throw. It's just like a baseball pitcher loading up on his back leg to get this body into the throw. Power is all in the legs, whether it's throwing a baseball, a football, or shooting a basketball. Accuracy is also greatly affected by the leg drive — push off too early or too late, and your arm is either behind or ahead of the body, and you lose velocity and accuracy as a result.

    Mainoumi and Takanohana

Mahalo, Jason! I knew someone could explain that stuff!!!
    Nitey nite!

  388. las vegas:

Sumo just has to adapt and many stablemasters already have done so.
Some stables offer yearly vacations to Guam, Saipan or even Hawaii as an incentive to recruit new wrestlers.
The food has improved greatly, unlike the old days when the average new recruit was from a poor family and just happy to eat, Japan has surpassed most of the world in average income.
As for the "guts pose", as long as you're not taunting your opponent, why should anyone care and thanking the Osaka crowd in the Kansai dialect? How smart is that? Osaka fans who were non committal about him, love Asa now, sheer genius.

In truth Asa will most likely not remain in sumo after retirement and will return to Mongolia a millionaire many times over.
No word of this has come out, but just my guess as he married a Mongol girl and not a Japanese.

  389. oxtail soup:

A cheerleader on another blog commented that she had a similar injury to Colt's, that it's quite painful.

And Colt's doing all those footwork drills, throwing for over an hour!
    He is a tough dude.

Us mere mortals would have run screaming to the doctor a long time ago.

  390. las vegas:

    Too bad about Takanohana II,
After his father's death (Takanohana I) he was plagued with very public arguments with his brother (Wakanohana III) and his mom, Noriko.
When Akinoshima retired, he also turned on Taka II and asked to be assigned to a different stable as an teaching coach.
Though mostly not his fault the sumo asso. blamed him for the bad pub.
In addition, Taka II "lost" some important paperwork involved in the inheritance.
Though a very popular yokozuna, taka II had trouble attracting new recruits and has had a four year period with no shin-deshi.

Somethings were out of his control, like his brother Waka III trying to hog the limelight and having a slutty mother.
Akinoshima has hated Taka II from day one and is still jealous in retirement.

Taka II has not helped himself in the press with his standoffish personality and quiet demeanor.

  391. las vegas:

    Too bad about Mainoumi too,
After a nice career Mai expected to buy a "kabu" or stock in the sumo asso.
This would allow him to become a stablemaster.
However, his main patron, a real estate mogul and construction company owner went bust in Japan's bubble economy, good bye money.
Mai turned to TV where he did alright on game shows (think hollywood squares) and announcing variety shows.
He got a major break when sumo started to do a all day feed during tourneys, which meant more commentators were needed.
Being both glib and smart Mai soon rose to be one of the prime time commentators and making a good living.
However Mai was suspended for 10 days this tourney for making disparaging remarks about some of the wrestlers on day 1.
Listening to him that night I was surprised with his candor and thought his comments accurate
the sumo asso. did not think so and suspended him and probably intended to fire him.
For whatever reason, most likely to prevent further bad pub, a noticeably subdued Mai was brought back to TV with no comment from either side

Life can be hard all over

  393. Kekoa:

LasVegas ~ I'm intrigued with your knowledge of the Sumo world. It's almost like knowing the leaders of a corporate entity. I mean the protocol and pecking order is so interesting.

How long does it take for an up and coming Sumo wrestler to become a household name? When does he know he has become worthy enough to take his place at the table. When can he speak without being ignored by the grand champions before him.

What is the number one benefit of retiring from the sport beside the money?

  394. Kekoa:

Past my bedtime...I'll check for an answer later.

    Kekoa has left the building...

  395. las vegas:

    Kekoa,
To answer your questions in order
Ther are only 650 to 750 wrestlers at any one time and every one of them is a household name in his hometown or prefecture.
Almost every match is on TV, so die hard fans know the sumotori by sight.
To be nationally famous, you must be in one of the top two divisions, Juryo and the higher Makuuchi.

Wrestlers are taught that there is always someone above you, so speak carefully and tread carefully, only the yokozuna have a little leeway in speaking, but are usually held to a higher standard in behavior (this is what gets Asashoryu in trouble all the time)

On retirement there is a onetime payout that is figured on many factors such as how many tourney at what rank, how many wins, wins vs. yokozuna etc.
The goal for most retirees is to buy a "kabu" of which there is 105 openings.
These are stocks in the sumo asso. i.e. you become part owner until retirement age of 65.
This kabu entitles you to open your own training stable and also pays a salary monthly.
At present there are 55 stables which means that 50 stock holders are either coaches or work in the various departments.
A plus from owning your stable is that the sumo asso. pays you a allowance to train and feed your recruits, something some stablemasters cheat and keep a portion.

  396. las vegas:

The requirements to become an oyakata are very high. First, you must be Japanese citizen.
This rule was introduced to ensure that no foreigner can become an oyakata, let alone become an executive member of the Nihon Sumo Kyokai (and thus "de-Japanize" Japan's national sport).
Unfortunately for the fathers of this rule they put it exactly this way: "Japanese citizen", forgetting the possibility of becoming a naturalized Japanese citizen. Current Azumazeki-oyakata (former Takamiyama) was the first one to take advantage of this loophole.

Second, you must have been a sekitori (paid rikishi). If you made it only to Makushita or lower(i only made it to Makushita), you have no chance to be an oyakata (you can of course be hired as trainer after retirement, but you will never become oyakata).
Having been a sekitori is not enough. You must also have either a certain number of basho under your mawashi or have achieved a certain rank:

*you must become Yokozuna or Ozeki,
*or become Sekiwake or Komusubi and complete one basho,
*or have twenty basho or more as Makuuchi rikishi,
*or have thirty basho or more as Juryo and/or Makuuchi.

  397. las vegas:

Just an aside, pay rates for stablemasters (Oyakata)

    20,870,000 Yen 200k per year

    down to

    12,180,000 Yen 10k per month

    Not bad for retirement

  398. las vegas:

    Remember Musashimaru?
After retirement he is still known as Musashimaru-oyakata.
He has not bought stock in the sumo asso. yet, but because he was a yokozuna, he was given a 5 year window to procure one.
This is called a Jun-Toshyori kabu and at present there is only 'maru and former ozeki Tochiazuma II.
Tochi has no worries as his dad(Tamanoi, fmr Tochiazuma I) will retire soon and give his kid the family kabu.
'Maru better get his okole moving or he'll be out of sumo soon.

  399. las vegas:

    bored yet?

  400. las vegas:

    Hmm,
    5 am in lv.
wife asleep upstairs, even the dogs are nowhere to be found.
    Ooops, I know why!
I drank a large glass of milk when I sat down, and I'm lactose intolerant.
You know it must be bad when the dogs are offended and leave the room.

  401. ralvic:

    Good Morning

Another somber moment-Add ATA Airlines to the list of companies going out of business. It was announced about an hour ago, according the HA. This is grim for the tourist business in Hawaii. The trickle down effect will be felt. This is bad.

  402. RainbowCliff:

Good Morning Tsaiko Nation. Had an interesting CC yesterday with the Tsai Meister and Princess Leila at our Kings Hawaiian Restaurant in Torrance, California. Waiting for our "HONORED" guests was an adventure in it self as the "Tsai-Meister" got first hand of South Central Los Angeles when he got lost in the area of Slauson and Adams, Bloods and Crips territory. Man that guy found the right freeway wiki wiki !

When they finally arrived a BIG sigh of relief as I was chuckling from ear to ear. Had a good time with Rich2176 and his lovely wife Margo being the host with the most as our human sports wire Garret was updating us with so much information. AWESOME
gentlemen as he gave me the secret to indenting (eat your heart out Tsai-Meister !)

We had two special guests in Gary Yamada and KonTonk who lurks as they shared great cheer and added good conversation to our luncheon reception. The best part of the day was when Rich 2176 gave Mr. Tsai a personal "BEAUTIFUL" autograph picture of American Idol host Paula Abdul. MAN that bugga was smiling from ear to ear as that picture was FABULOUS as she wrote to him with beautiful penmenship and sincerity. Great job Richie Rich !

Our Ronnie could not make it because of time constraints and our honored guests limited time who had to catch a plane by mid afternoon. Ended the brunch with lots of hugs and well wishes. When driving back on sepulveda was in the opposite lane of Mr. Tsai rented Dodge vehicle as I turned up the stereo sounds for him to hear my Cazimero Brothers "Hawaiian Spirits Live Again" as the Princess and Tsai-Meister were BLOWN away with laughter from this "Rainbow Warrior" of yester years. Wonderful Time !

    LizKauai Says:

    April 2nd, 2008 at 11:11 pm
ATA Airlines has shut down now…

Probably not the last one with all this craziness going one!

that makes Aloha, Champion & ATA, within 3 days!

  404. RainbowCliff:

Las Vegas and Ralvic, Howz it gentlemen as it is a GLORIOUS morning here in Los Angeles ! birds are chirping and the sun is coming out to shine it's rays of sunshine. How is life in your area and what is the latest news ? come back !

  405. las vegas:

    Cliff,
glad you had a good time and even better that Margo was able to join you folks.

  406. las vegas:

    Cliff,
ST and the Princess also got lost coming to the lunchgate before the UNLV game too.

    I see a pattern.

  407. RainbowCliff:

Las Vegas, the closing of these Hawaiian airlines is so sad and dissapointing. Reading these heart felt stories of elderly employee finding another job, wife being pregnant and single parent mom with 2 kids and ex-husband seeking a divorce is gut wrenching to say the least. What do these folks do as does Hawaii has enough money in unemployment checks to keep them surviving until another job comes there way ?

  408. myki1:

Good morning Las Vegas, RainbowCliff and all other early bird Tsai-kos !!!

LV thanks so much for all that info on sumo. I watched it as I was growing up because my dad who was issei was a fan. The few times that they had matches in Hawaii he would make my mom drive him to get tickets and then to and from the matches. He was always dissappointed cuz he couldn't arrange to a match in Japan.

Cliff, sounds you all had a great time at your calf call with ST. It was great to hear that Margo was feeling good enough to join you all. I know how tough chemo can be. sjmacro went through many courses 2 years ago.

I think ST could have flown home without the plane after receiving that special gift!!

Time to [ut the coffee on and slowly get ready for another morning at spring practice.

You all have a great day!!

  409. las vegas:

    Cliff,
the cold hard facts are that the vast majority of Aloha's laid off employees will not find work in the airline industry.
any new airline that wants to fill the void left by Aloha and ATA will hire younger, cheaper staff for most of the local stations.

i believe that the unemployment checks will run out long before a good paying airline job with benefits comes along, gotta find something quick.

  410. RainbowCliff:

Yes, Las Vegas Margo gives me INSPIRATION every day as I am always happy to see her smile and feel her wonderful spirit. Been working hard to get her script "nuttin but" on the BIG screen as I have an actor Pooch Hall who has given the script to his agent who really think the story is wonderful and fill with romance comedy humor.

Little by little it is coming slowly as another actor Rich has met who knows Pooch is in our corner as we find a producer and director to get it out of the closet and to a theatre near you. Ex- Laker Superstar Rick Fox did a cameo apperance with our TV Star Pooch Hall of "The Game" as we hope Rick Fox can jump on board the Margo Academy Award Movie Premiere !

Keeping hope alive is my trademark as I continue to hustle by making it happen !

  411. myki1:

Sorry for all the typos. Little difficult typing in the dark. I'm sure you all figured out what I was trying to say: couldn't arrange to see a match.
    sounds like you
    Time to put the

  412. las vegas:

    Myki1,
Hope you and SJ get some good pics!

  413. Loa:

    morning RainbowCliff, las vegas, myki1!

lv - thanks for the sumo info/history, used to follow it when the Waianae boys were up there, my fav was Chiyonofuji, amazing how he would pick up and toss the other guys around

  414. las vegas:

    Uhmmm, Cliff, ahem,
er, I thought I was the star of the film!
Y'know when Rich mentioned "Pooch" I naturally thought it was me.

Well even if it doesn't star me, I hope it gets rolling asap.

I still don't understand, I was supposed to play the Stephen Tsai charactor!

  415. las vegas:

    Good morning Loa!

  416. Loa:

lv - so how long did you live in japan? whenever i remember i try to watch Soko Ga Shiritai, looks like a great country/culture to experience

  417. Stretch:

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Sad news on ATA, especially for G('nalo). He had a unused ticket on ATA that he had to use. He setup a trip to Vegas in May but had to pay a penalty and difference in cost. Now he has nothing. It's almost like the craps dealers saying, "Out, Seven Out!!!"

  418. RainbowCliff:

Myki1, a pleasure to read your words and feel your warmth of sincerity. Margo is a GREAT lady as I am so HONORED that she can join and see the good people who supports and love her so very much. Cancer is TERRIBLE as I have lost wonderful people over the years who has succumbed to this deadly desease. Margo is handeling it well as she has good and bad days BUT you will never know as her smile is so genuine and her spirit fills you with her kindness and BEAUTIFUL caring heart. A strong and DYNAMIC women ! It's been inspiring to her to have her script get the deserving attention as I continue EVERYDAY to find connections and people in the entertainment industry to gather there support to it. Have a GREAT morning !

  419. Loa:

    morning Stretch!

G('nalo) might be able to recover his costs if he charged the penalty and difference in cost. i heard that is what some people with aloha tickets are doing.

  420. las vegas:

    Loa,
If you put all the time I've lived in Japan, about 15 years would seem correct.
really is worth then time and effort to go there, even if you just join a group tour.
one pronlem is that once you've eaten at a real kiaiseki-ya or sushi-ya in Japan, you'll be spoiled and always finding fault with local Japanese eateries

  421. las vegas:

    Stretch,
could've been worse for G('nalo), he could have been in lv already and stuck out here.

  422. las vegas:

I wonder what airline diesel is using

  423. RainbowCliff:

Good Morning to you Loa as you wake up to that tropical air and sweet sea breeze that only Hawaii has. Nothing better then the Hawaiian Islands and your kona coffee to wake you up.

  424. las vegas:

    Cliff,

Are you writing copy for the Hawaii tourist Bureau?

Good Morning to you Loa as you wake up to that tropical air and sweet sea breeze that only Hawaii has. Nothing better then the Hawaiian Islands and your kona coffee to wake you up

    If you aren't, you should!

  425. RainbowCliff:

Lsa Vegas, that is some tough news on the folks who lost employment with Aloha Airlines. Is it true that "GO" caused this to happen with there scrupulous ways of power and decieving the sky ways that brought Aloha down ? How did ATA crash 2 days later ? Man you got some sad news with Hawaii air travel.

  426. Loa:

lv - whats a kiaiseki-ya? is that like okazu-ya or like a ginza?

cliff - you're such an inspiration and positive force!

  427. Garret:

This may be a VERY good year for UH to be playing Washington State. Hard to imagine that they have less scholarship athletes than the I-AA team that their coach was at last year!

Washington State began the spring woefully lacking in depth and short on talent, the kind of indicators that can reliably predict a lower-division finish in the Pac-10.

Fewer than 60 scholarship players are participating in the 15 practice sessions (Wulff estimated the number to be 58 or 59), and the personnel shortage negates the likelihood of a true spring game in Pullman when practices wrap April 12, with a glorified scrimmage the replacement.

In contrast, Eastern Washington, the Football Championship Subdivision program Wulff left last December after 15 seasons (the past eight as head coach), has 63 total scholarships.

Starting running back Dwight Tardy has been sidelined while rehabilitating an anterior cruciate ligament tear in his left knee that cost him the final four games of last season.

Tardy's backup, Chris Ivory, is focusing on his schoolwork this semester, and several other backs have nursed injuries.

Offensive lineman Steven Ayers has been hampered by a shoulder injury. Tight end Ben Woodard has been limited because of his recovery from hernia surgery. Cornerback Devin Giles, like Ivory, is focusing on academics. Wide receiver Jeshua Anderson is running hurdles for the track team.

Wulff said positions of particular concern are wide receiver, the secondary and linebacker.

With all of the talk about Japan, it is interesting to see in the news that a Japanese football team is currently watching BSU's Spring Practices. It looks like BSU is getting the Japanese market foothold that JJ wanted to establish for UH when he tried to get a game in Japan.

Eight representatives of the American football club at Hosei University in Tokyo are spending two weeks observing the Broncos' spring practices and meetings, hoping to learn new tricks that will keep Hosei among the elite college football teams in Japan.

Hosei, which began an international academic partnership with Boise State in 2006, has appeared in 13 of the past 16 college football championship games in Japan. Hosei won back-to-back college titles in 2005 and 2006.

Coach Hitoshi Aoki said he wanted to visit Boise State because he sees similarities with his program. Hosei isn't a big-name school in Japan, but it wins regularly.

"We do not possess the best facilities," Aoki said, "but still we're competing at the very top level in Japan."

Hosei sent five coaches, two trainers and one faculty representative on the trip. The coaches began their visit Monday and will stay through the Spring Game on April 11.

They attend staff and position meetings and will receive presentations next week from coach Chris Petersen, offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin, defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox and special teams coach Jeff Choate.

Not all of the visitors speak English - Aoki spoke to the Idaho Statesman through an interpreter - but X's and O's and game film don't require translation.

Hosei has 28,276 undergraduate students, according to its Web site. Six Hosei students are studying at Boise State and four Boise State students are planning to study at Hosei, Hosei faculty advisor Takashi Yaekura said.

Hosei's football coaches haven't visited an American college in 15-20 years, Aoki said.

The trip should help Hosei's coaches develop their knowledge of the game, but it also could help Boise State.

The Broncos, it turns out, are a hit in Japan. This should only elevate their status over there.

"The Broncos are very, very popular in Japan," Yaekura said. "A lot of people watched that Fiesta Bowl victory."

  430. RainbowCliff:

Las Vegas, funny bra as some how I seem to get a reaction with my words in which I am a publisher, tv reporter or magazine editor that needs to use his summation for world publicity use. Man you make me want to write a novel with all that GREATNESS you give me. Mahalo kind sir !

  431. Garret:

It is too bad for Texas that this Memphis player got his test results after their game.

Backup point guard Andre Allen didn't accompany the team flight to San Antonio.

He was suspended for a positive, NCAA-administered drug test, according to a report from WREG-TV Channel 3.

The point guard born during the Tigers last great tournament run, the point guard named after Andre Turner, will not follow his namesake and play in the Final Four.

It is sad, more than anything else. One of just two Memphians on the roster -- and the one who sees the most significant time -- will be watching the Final Four from home.

Calipari should be allowed to keep telling everyone that these are good kids, and never mind the rough edges.

But what will that spiel sound like now that one of those kids has been suspended? For a failed NCAA drug test, of all things?

If the rest of the country was inclined to be suspicious of the Memphis players before this happened, what will they think now?

And there's nobody to blame for this, either, no miserables or haters or anyone else.

The selection committee didn't do this to the Tigers. The national media didn't do this to the Tigers.

A Tiger did this to the Tigers, and that's what hurts the most.

    morning Garret!
didn't UH have a walk on from Japan? or maybe i'm thinking of a Japanese player participating in an NFL exhibition game?

  435. d1shima:

    Good morning all.
Wow, a wide and varied topic selection to catch up on.
    Where to start?

More distressing news about ATA now ceasing operations. Makes me wonder what kind of "black eye" Hawaii tourism is going to end up with? More importantly, have we seen the end of this episode yet? Are there more bankruptcy/closings yet to come?

    Rainbow Cliff,
Great narrative about your CC. Sounds like you folks had a great time (once everyone actually got there!)

  436. d1shima:

    las vegas,
Howzit. Very interesting info about the sumo world. You could write a book; maybe a novel.

  437. d1shima:

    Garret,
Makes you wonder how low UDub has sunken that they cannot win the Apple Cup despite the lack of scholarship athletes Wazzu has.

  438. d1shima:

    myki,
Looking forward to SJ-macro's next bhf2-view report on practice! haha

  439. RainbowCliff:

Garret, good to see your up and running with the AWESOME posts ! had a GREAT time with you and our special guests Mr. Tsai and the Princess Leila at our CC in Kings Hawaiian. Kon Tonk and Gary fit right in as there wit and humor added to the festive occasion. Love reading Lori's blog and Faith donating that beautiful hair.

Got the indenting down my good friend as your 20 seconds lecture on this flaw was corrected quickly as I got an A on your indenting 101 class in between the saimin and the short ribs. 442. RainbowCliff:

Well Tsaiko Nation I am off to Magic's 24 hour fitness. Earvin built this beautiful facility right around the corner that I live less then half a mile away. Got to get my situps, regular bench and swimming in. Meet a lot of good people along the way as I shower them with my Aloha spirit. Be well good folks and make this day a HAPPY day as you all are God's beautiful people and you live and come from a SPECIAL place call Hawaii Nei in which there is NO other place like it. Simply the best, better then all the rest. Continue to strive for peace, tranquility and that wonderful words of polynesian hospitality. Just plain AWESOME !

  443. d1shima:

    Loa,
    Hey Loa, how you?
Could be. I'll defer to las vegas for a more definitive analysis.

  444. d1shima:

Wow, just heard Phil Slash's "dramatic" announcement that "this...will...be... the first...day...the Warriors...are...in...full...pads."
    That guy cracks me up!

    EEEyew...

  446. MeiLing:

Aloha Kakahiaka, Stephen, Princess, Tsai-ko Nation!

oxtail, that article was refreshing to read about Colt's draft chances. Since I'm home today, I might throw in the games I have recorded to watch again. Game film on the guys should give scouts a better picture than opinion articles.

LV, were you up all night? I'll be out there at the beginning of May when my Mom & Aunty go, but gotta find out what airlines they were booked on. That may throw a wrench into their trip.

Rich, prayers out for Margo. Didn't know the challenge she faces till I read Rainbow Cliff's posts.

  447. LizKauai:

    Aloha Kakahiaka, ka kou!

Here's last night's news coverage of practice #2 and some of Pro day.

I guess with the rain out today that the news stations will have to stretch yesterday's video somehow till today.

Thanks HF! You continue to screw us over. If you bothered to take care of all of Cooke field instead of just the track we could still practice during the rain.

Didn't I read somewhere that the Domo Turf guys wanted to do Cooke Field while they were resurfacing Murakami stadium as a package deal but no one got back to them? That would probably have been at a discount. Now we'll probably have to put the whole contract out to bid and take that much longer to get it repaired.

  449. koakane:

howzit, howzit, howzit and a good morning all

big state testing for my kids today and for the next 7 days. say a small prayer to akua they do well. mahalo plenty.

  450. Esme:

Hola, guten morgen, buon giorno, ohaiyo gozaimasu, Tsaikos!

How's everyone doing? Been so busy, I've been outta the blog more than usual the past few days. Withdrawals ...

  451. Kekoa:

    Good Morning Tsaiko Citizenery!

Just finished reading a draft copy of a novel that Las Vegas is writing about the life cycle of a Sumotori. If you go back to post #395, you will get a real education of what it takes to become one. Tanks Las Vegas, I might have considered joining your stable back in the day if I could just get over wearing the gear! Throwing the salt part is no problem, throwing somebody weighing more then a VW...Big Problem!

  452. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Good morning everybody. Nice and rainy today. We need the rains, but the Warriors need the practice. Oh well.

  453. Jason:

Did someone say Fil Slash? *shudders* Can't stand that guy. And his cackle.

Okay, I'm getting hungry. Just Cheerios, though, no kaiseki.

Days like this, you wonder what's taken so long to get some turf at Cooke Field. It's Mānoa, it rains. Not that hard to figure out what 2 + 2 is.

  454. Kekoa:

    Mornin' DPK ~
Greetings from the ceded lands of Kaupe'a! Good day for Ti leaf sliding huh?

I know the Warrior team will be playing "King of the Hill" there on campus when there are rainouts, so we can forget about them sharing...Got any recollections of fave spots from back in the day?

  455. Garret:

I'm back now...sorry I missed responding to the posts by las vegas, Cliff, Loa, d1shima, etc. Lori had to drive for Faith's field trip today so I took Mika to her gym class (I was the only guy there of course) and then Lori had given me a shopping list that I needed to take care of at Trader Joe's and Henry's. Mika is finishing the lunch I gave to her so I can blog for a minute or two now...

  456. Garret:

Interesting that the University of Colorado is looking at putting a hotel next to their football stadium *on campus*. That would let them hold conferences on campus and have the recruits stay in the hotel right next to the football stadium. They feel that a hotel on campus will give them a recruiting advantage.

f the University of Colorado decides to build a hotel-conference center on campus, one of the sites it will consider is an area just outside the northeast corner of Folsom Field, Chancellor G.P. "Bud" Peterson said.

The school began a survey this week to gauge the need for such a facility and the City of Boulder has postponed further discussion of a possible hotel and conference center at 14th Street and Canyon Boulevard awaiting the survey results. Peterson said CU's plans would also likely include a performing arts center.

Athletic director Mike Bohn said a campus hotel would likely be filled with CU sports fans dozens of nights each year before and after games. He said it would also be an attraction for recruits, who stay at a variety of locations now.

"Any time the University of Colorado has a chance to enhance hospitality and convention service that is certainly a benefit to athletics and the entire campus," Bohn said. "An on-campus hotel would be a boost to recruiting and for the hospitality of boosters and visitors to complement the other outstanding properties in Boulder."

  457. Garret:

Wow, Mika finished lunch already. She asked for grapes so I have a little more time to blog.

The WR that Paul Johnson just lost is on Georgia Tech's all-time WR lists. If he played this season he'd probably move quite a bit up their all-time lists.

James Johnson, one of the top 20 pass-catchers in Georgia Tech history, has left the Yellow Jackets football team one week into spring practice.

"He quit one time before, and I talked him into coming back," Tech coach Paul Johnson said Wednesday. "[The first time, before spring practice started,] he was just tired of football."

His departure, the transfers of Colin Peek and D.J. Donley and the loss of three players who exhausted their eligibility leaves Tech without six of its top nine pass-catchers from 2007. That, combined with Greg Smith's move to A-back, has left Tech with freshman Tyler Melton and walk-ons behind sophomores Demaryius Thomas and Correy Earls.

James Johnson ranks 13th in Tech history with nine touchdown receptions, 15th in Tech history with 1,240 yards receiving and 17th in Tech history with 78 catches.

  458. Garret:

Iowa is going to get KILLED by the APR due to all of their transfers. This is an extremely high transfer rate!

Fifteen of 39 players from the 2005 and 2006 signing classes have left the program, which will negatively impact the program's academic progress rate, an NCAA academic measurement standard. The NCAA mandates that each athletics program achieve an APR score of 925 spanning a three-year period, meaning 60 percent of a program's student-athletes are progressing toward graduation.

"The APR is a yearly measurement, so we anticipate this year's APR going down," said Fred Mims, Iowa's associate athletics director for compliance and student services. "The three-year average that's been made public is pretty strong; they can absorb a down year.

Running back Jevon Pugh's recent departure negatively impacts the school on two levels. One, he left school. Two, he left in midsemester, which means he will not meet eligibility standards.

"If you don't complete a semester then that counts against you academically so chances are it will be the worst of both worlds," Mims said.

  459. Garret:

Iowa State is NOT offering single-game tickets, which means that Nebraska fans will be forced to buy season tickets if they want to see Nebraska's game at Iowa State. This worked for Iowa State last year when Iowa played there.

The hottest ticket on Iowa State's 2008 home football schedule once again is going to come at a steep price.

As it did for last year's game with Iowa at Jack Trice Stadium, ISU is not offering single-game stadium seating for next season's Oct. 18 game against Big 12 Conference rival Nebraska.

"If you want to sit in a seat you have to buy a season ticket," said ISU senior associate athletics director Steve Malchow. "You can't afford to let your fans cherry pick one game. You have to sell season tickets. (Athletic departments) can't live off one game."

ISU sold a school-record 36,610 season tickets, a gamble Athletics Director Jamie Pollard and his staff hope pays off again this fall.

Attendance for ISU-Nebraska games in Ames have topped 50,000 three of the last four years the teams have played, including the second-highest total in school history in 2006 when 55,338 attended.

  460. Garret:

Looks like the 4000 seats for the visiting team (which is what UH is getting from Florida) is a pretty standard thing even among BCS-conference teams that visit other BCS-conference teams.

Nebraska is guaranteed an allotment of 4,000 tickets it sells to its fans. Those will cost Husker faithful $90, same as Iowa fans paid last season for their tickets.

  461. MeiLing:

chawan_cut, mahalo for the video! It's really nice for us mainlanders to get to see the local news. Mahalo, mahalo, mahalo!

Garret, interesting aspect on Colorado's rationale for their conference center. NAU just completed a conference ctr. & hotel at the corner of campus, mainly due to the lack of conference facilities in town. But, I can see the sports aspect of it, since we have people from Montana, etc. coming in from out-of-state for games, & recruits. Something to talk to the NAU President about tonight.

MAJOR STANDING "O" FOR STEPHEN, LEILA AND EUGENE!

    AWESOME PRO DAY COVERAGE!

I know, I'm a little late, but it was so busy yesterday that it was the wee hours before I had a chance to finally finish the last bits of that GIANT collection of stories, videos and photos. (Especially loved that photo of Colt, RGM, Bess, Rivers and CJ huddled — like old times.)

Thanks for working so hard to make us all feel like we were there.

  463. Esme:

Can anyone clarify the relationship between 49ers coach Ted Tollner and Colt's agents Bruce and Ryan Tollner? I sometimes hear them referred to as the Tollner brothers, and yet on more than one occasion I've read that Bruce is the son and Ryan is the nephew of Ted Tollner. Anyone know?

  464. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Esme- according to Google:
Bruce is the son and Ryan is the nephew of San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks coach Ted Tollner.

  465. UKU@LA:

go! warriors. i'm back! MANEO !!!

  466. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Hi Uku!!!
Look forward to seeing you again during the season. All these airlines things are going to make traveling more interesting - that's for sure!!!
Still bragging about your awesome ti leaves at NOLA.

  467. James:

    Good morning Tsaikos.....

Hope all is well....gee, first day in pads and practice gets rained out...maybe we need to enclose Cooke Field and make it an indoor facility.....

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  468. Stretch:

James - that would be a good idea but they still have to install a turf first

  469. sjmacro:

We're just back from the "cancelled" practice. We = BHF2, myki, Brashton's gramma, David Veiikune's dad. Talk about warrior supporters in the rain. D-line stayed indoors so as not to tear up the field. QBs, RBs, receivers were out a little after 7 doing some passing and route drills. Got to see how good the hands were with the rain and slippery field. D1, no real pictures available, unless I can make out anything from inside the foggy windshield and chainlink fence. Even Richard Ambo from Advertiser didn't stay to shoot.
When we left BHF2 on the way to ticket office to make sure they are as hard working as the coaches. Where's my tickets. He was in the parking lot at 4:45 to see who of the coaches was turning on the lights...Aranda? laters.... sjmacro & myki

  470. James:

Stretch...agreed. Turf would be nice. I wonder what the costs would be to put up a field house around Cooke Field....???

  471. LizKauai [Believer]:

    sjmacro- WOW! That's devotion!
GOOD LUCK BHF2. Looking forward to your ticket office report! I just got my birthday check from my sister (who earmarked it for my Swamp ticket!).

    hiho

  472. Esme:

sjmacro, cool report. Wish I could go. Thanks!

  473. Bulla:

    Las Vegas,

Mahalo for the insight to the intricacies of the sumo world...wow. you and i both are lactose intolerant....so when the family eats ice cream at cold stone, i am on a 23 minute window, or it is not a pretty sight.

that is where we embrace the 'TO GO' offer from the counterperson. haha

have a good day bro, shoot, it's after lunch for you already!

  474. Kekoa:

Myki & SJ ~ Mahalo for the extra effort and slogging it out in the Manoa mist. Will I see you at the Pau Hana?...I want to ask about the parking strategy, and best place to meet with you hardcore practice "Lurkos" prior to, during or after the morning sessions.

  475. Kekoa:

Eh!...One Super Shout out to the UKU@LA!

Those awesome leaves always become a part of the story I tell family and friends about my trip to NOLA and meeting you at the Tsaiko Tsick Call. The pictures alone tell it like it was. I never got a chance to tell you how really thankful I was for your presence.

Hope to see you along the game circuit again one day. Or better yet, when you come home to visit, we can grind some raw stuff and "puka da poi bowl!"

    A Hui Hou!

  476. sjmacro:

Kekoa: re: parking--if you come early enough ~6:30 we park at the ewa end of the field under the trees near the pond. Used to be able to park outside the mauka fence by the compost heap but construction vehicles are there. If after 7 most likely have to use the parking structure.
We won't be at Pau Hana since we will be at volleyball. Does Sam Snead's keep the 19th hole open past 9?--sjmacro & myki

  477. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Hi Kekoa!

    How's da family?
Please enjoy something yummy at Sam Snead's for me!

    HiHo~

  478. Kekoa:

SJ ~ Yep!...we got the place until 11PM at which time we will prolly adjourn to the Monterey Cannery for some Haw'n musica and healing spirits. Thanks for the parking tips!

Myki - Diana's negotiating for a quad strand of Ni'ihau shells like yours for herself. I'm not supposed to know the price, but I've already placed one of my houses up for sale just in case.

  479. James:

    ATTN: ATTN: ATTN:..............koakane...koakane...koakane

I will probably be at the Pau Hana tomorrow. Fortunately, our deadline that was set at Midnight tomorrow night, got moved up to 10 p.m. If we finish before that we should be able to leave a little earlier...so I may be able to leave here by 9:30 or sooooo...it depends. We've been working till after 11 p.m. every night this week to front load stuff so that we won't be bogged down the end of this week or next week.....

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  480. Kekoa:

    Hiya Liz!

Hey...we might end up playing midnight golf out there at Sam's! First we'll bless the spot we held the Granny call at, and then blaze a new trail to the bar! Bwhahahahaha!

Pops still not quite ready for prime time, but staying the course laid out for him by the doctors. It's all good.

Just got back from meeting with the ceded land folks...lots of good ideas for the future of the area. Maybe too many. They need to focus on one project at a time so as not to overload. My people can be so easily divided on Manini issues. :(

Are you keeping the protesters in check? Just tell 'em the Tsaikos are coming over to sit on 'em if they don't behave!

  481. Kekoa:

James is coming! James is coming!

Koakane, quick, get the Oxygen tanks ready to revive this hard working soul. Then we can insert the IV of that brand new, old beer called "Primo!" Ahhh...life support systems, what would we do without 'em!

  482. WreckinEyez:

    James

No Problem, I don't get out of the studio until 9pm that night and won't make it there until about 9:30 or ten... I'll see you there.

I was wondering... do they still serve food there at that time?

  483. Kekoa:

Sorry Wreck...kitchen closes at 9PM, besides you're on a strict liquid Primo diet anyway, right?

  484. WreckinEyez:

LOL... I remember the beer was tops back then, after my 2nd grade year I never seen it again... Too bad I could not try it.

  485. ralvic:

    Good Morning

Thanks to the Tsaikos that write about their impressions of practices, coaches and
players, and adding tidbits we would otherwise not see in the paper. For many of us that can't go to practice it's good reading of the personable side of what they see.Even how they acknowledge other Tsaikos in attendances gives me a feeling of pride that Tsaikos support and represent. This is good.We have videos, pictures and write ups that add to the support and passion of the Warriors. This is great.Thanks.

To Rainbowcliff-The sharing of a few words about a meet up with other Tsaikos, including ST crew and others from your locale, strengthens the bonds and allows others reading and sensing the excitement of how you describe-a yearning to be a better and supportive people ourselves/myself.This is ,one would hope,is infectious. Thanks, again.

  486. WreckinEyez:

Kekoa, I am with you on "Manini" issues... The real big picture needs to be looked at.

    Keep up the good work!

  487. Kazz:

    AIESSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSS!!!

Writing to you good folks on this blog has been a rewarding experience as it has given me an opportunity to speak to the GREATEST people in the world and that is the good folks of the Aloha State. Never will forget the love and admiration given to me as I am always honored to be in the company of Hawaii people. Sharing it and displaying it to others is just my way of reflecting warm inner feelings to a place and time that still lives in me today. Mahalo for your GREATNESS !
