Wahine honored, Patton gets tryout, Campbell to transfer

May 14th, 2008 by Stephen Tsai

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association named Kate Robinson and Kaulana Gould to the West Region All-Star first team.
Brandi Peiler was named to the second team.
They automatically become finalists for the 2008 Louisville Slugger/NFCAA All-America teams. Here’s the link:

Be sure to read Robinson’s journal starting in tomorrow’s Advertiser.

Former UH cornerback Kenny Patton has earned a tryout with the New York Jets.
“It’s been a long time,” said Patton, whose last UH game was the 2006 Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl.
Patton wowed scouts at Pro Day last year, earning a free-agent contract with the Oakland Raiders.
Patton leaves Saturday for New York.
His workout is Monday.

Karl Noa was among several rookies cut by the J-E-T-S.
The good news is that Noa, by several accounts, looked better as a pass-rusher than the Jets’ No. 1 pick, Vernon Gholston.
Or, for fans of the J-E-T-S, is that bad news?

Offensive lineman Travis Campbell is transferring to San Diego State.
Campbell, a preferred walk-on, was unable to compete in spring training after undergoing shoulder sugery. He would not have been 100 percent for the start of training camp in August.
UH had wanted him to sit out the fall semester and rejoin the team in January. Instead, he opted to transfer to SDSU, where must sit out the season.
“He had a great experience with the team,” said father, Jim. “He was enamored by the team. He’s amazed by the loyalty of the fans, just thrilled by their response to the team.”
Jim said the family will continue to support the Warriors.
“Definitely,” Jim said.

Colt Brennan was in town this past weekend.
He went fishing with offensive lineman Levi Legay and his father.
They caught a 30-pound ono and a 25-pound mahimahi.
Tomorrow, Brennan leaves Irvine, Calif., to report to the Washington Redskins’ training facility in Virginia. It is a planned one-way trip; Brennan will continue rehabilitation on his hip in Virginia.

The Under Armour Warrior polo shirts and T-shirts are on sale now at the UH Book Store. The T-shirt material is unbelievably comfortable.

* * *

Adam Leonard has been wearing the Under Armour shoes. He also marveled at the comfort.

And today’s really big news …

But the best news of the day comes from Margo, my Roosevelt classmate and Rich2176’s wife:

Just wanted to share my great news: I am finished with chemo! Dr. Raul
Mena, my wonderful oncologist and medical matador, said I was doing so well
that he shaved off the planned seventh and final chemo session (which
would’ve been later this month or early June), so today was the last of my
infusions — hooray!!

Tomorrow, I will have my sixth and last $21K (yes that’s right, so a total
of $126K) Neulasta shot to boost my white blood cell count. Then, I’ll just
focus on getting things back to normal — “hello” hair; “goodbye” leg
swell/stiffness, fatigue and frequent mental gaffs (well, I guess I’ll have
to find a new excuse for this one).

Calm down, folks. Princess Leila did not shoot the video that accompanied her story today. Scott Morifuji was the shooter. Scott actually is one of the paper’s finest photographers. Now, if he only can get rid of the blue screen …

I actually read all your articles before I post. Most of them go over my head, but I do read them. :)

Oh, all right, I’ll cut it out.

    Hi, ST, and hi, A-sports!

Hi ho, everyone … off to work I go. Have a great day!

  8. Addahknowsports:

    Hi Esme!

  9. Esme:

But before I go … man, if Colt ever is in town again, we should try to coax him over to a Tsaiko gathering.

  11. Garret:

I’m really sorry to hear about Karl Noa. Hopefully he can get in anther team’s camp or get a CFL shot.

  12. Garret:

Derek Inouchi was featured in Diverse magazine.

Growing up in Honolulu, Derek Inouchi followed University of Hawaii sports with a passion, collecting team media guides the way other kids collected baseball cards and comic books. “Media guides were a way of following the team besides watching TV,” he recalls. “I read [the] histories of all the teams. I looked at the photos over and over.”

As an undergraduate student at UH, he grew interested in the public relations side of sports when he learned that that office produced his beloved media guides. An internship in the UH athletics department led to a full-time media relations job there, the only career he has ever known. He’s now finishing his first year as media relations director and is in his 11th year in the office.

“I couldn’t do this job at a school on the mainland, because there it would be just a job,” says Inouchi, who earned a bachelor’s in communications after considering becoming an accountant like his parents. “I wouldn’t have the passion anywhere else.”

Without professional teams locally, Hawaiians follow UH sports intensely. UH’s athletics Web site gets more than 13,000 hits daily, so Inouchi and his colleagues not only work with local and national news media but post their own news and features.

“It didn’t matter that we’re in the middle of the Pacific,” he says. “Colt was featured everywhere — Sports Illustrated, The New York Times, USA Today, ESPN The Magazine.”

Add to that the team’s going undefeated during the regular season and playing in the Sugar Bowl, Inouchi says, “and it was a once in a lifetime experience. The fact it all happened the same year, along with the ceremony for the Heisman finalists, and it was unbelievable.”

    Lastg post on previous blog”

Am waiting on a return phone call from the UH ticket office to confirm the information before it gets posted here; however, the deadline to turn in the paperwork for all CURRENT season ticket holders and NEW season ticket holders is close of business Friday, May 23. All Florida and Oregon ticket requests will be processed in order received and according to a previously-set hierarchy. Will post that information here as well.

The procedure for making sure that tickets from different individuals who meet the above deadlines & criteria AND who want to sit next to each other is what I want to make sure is correct before it’s posted here. Please be patient. The last thing anyone wants is bad info being spread around.

If no return phone call comes in by early afternnon, then I’ll call again.

  14. Garret:

Chad Kapanui’s team lost their 5th straight, but at least the offense he led did well (they lost 53-47 and Chad threw 5 TD passes).

Sioux City (3-6) lost its fifth straight game, but the last three have been especially painful. Coach Jarrod DeGeorgia’s Bandits have lost their last three games by a total of 15 points in a stretch that started with a 53-49 loss at home to the Bloomington Extreme on April 26 and 51-46 last Saturday to the three-time UIF defending champion Sioux Falls Storm.

Playing in front of a crowd that included former Bandit Fred Jackson, who became the seventh player in team history to have his jersey retired on the team’s wall of fame, Sioux City put up enough points to win the game.

In fact, for the fourth straight game, the Bandits had an advantage in total yards, outgaining the Beef 280-239. Quarterback Chad Kapanui passed for 227 yards and five touchdowns, three to O.J. Simpson, who recorded his third 100-yard receiving game of the season with 10 catches for 137 yards.

  16. Garret:

Latrel Sprewell is a classic example of a former athlete who did NOT manage his money well.

Remember a few years ago, when Latrell Sprewell was offered a three-year extension from the Minnesota Timberwolves for $21 million, but turned it down, insulted, saying “I have a family to feed.” Fans were quick to persecute Sprewell after that for being greedy and selfish (and, kinda dumb) but as it turns out, he kinda needed that money. On Monday, his house was foreclosed on.

Sadly, Sprewell’s financial difficulties do not end there:

In January, his 70-foot yacht, “Milwaukee’s Best,” was sold at auction by the U.S. Marshals Service. The yacht, said to be worth $1.5 million, went for $856,000 after Sprewell failed to make the $10,322 monthly payments.

This seems like a fine time to point out that during his 13-year NBA career, Sprewell earned an estimated $96.6 million.

  17. Addahknowsports:

    Garret-

Nice article in #12. I like to read interviews and articles that show where peoples passions come from.

  18. jojo ®:

I like the Jets. I just have to question sometimes why they keep certain players and let go of the good ones.

  19. Garret:

This off-topic sports news surprised me.

World No 1 Justine Henin is set to announce her retirement from professional tennis, according to reports in the Belgian newspaper De Standaard.

Henin, who is 26 next month, won no new fewer than 10 titles in 2007, and has already won two this season, but she has in the past mentioned her wish to return to studying.

Henin missed the 2007 Australian Open, after separating from her husband but returned to win at both the French and US Opens later in the year.

She has topped the women’s rankings for 61 consecutive weeks now, since March last year.

  20. Garret:

Seattle Seahawks star Lofa Tatupu was arrested early Saturday morning for DUI after he was pulled over in a McDonald’s parking lot. That order is to go!

Tatupu, a three-time Pro Bowler, allegedly failed a breathalyzer test after he blew a .155 and .158 — nearly twice the legal limit in the state of Washington.

Tatupu just recently signed a new six-year contract worth $40 mil — so the attorney fees should be covered.

  21. Garret:

    Addahknowsports,

That article you mentioned was my favorite of the articles I posted today. I enjoyed learning more about Derek and hearing his perspective on the Warriors. I think his first year with UH was probably one of the most eventful years in UH sports history!

  22. MeiLing:

    Good luck to Colt!

  23. LizKauai [Believer]:

STEPHEN- did you get a chance to speak to Colt and if you did, did he say anything about how his hip is feeling???

  24. Kazz:

Adam Leonard has been wearing the Under Armour shoes. He also marveled at the comfort.

I just bought the new Under Armour Prototype training shoes (Evade) and they are comfortable indeed and amazingly LIGHT. However, while the “Evade” series is more for athletes that work on lateral movement, it works fine for me as an “all around” gym shoe. Besides they’re the only one that came in black.

As for the Under Armour polos, again… AWESOME fit and feel. I just had to buy two.

Also, I saw the other non-UH Under Armour polos in the golf section at Sports Authority, the same multi-colored one Coach Mack was sporting when he came to speak to us at the Warrior Bowl.

  25. Kazz:

THE NFL CAN TAKE COLT AWAY FROM HAWAII, BUT NO CAN TAKE THE HAWAII OUT OF COLT!!!

    HANA PA’A!!!!!

  26. Kazz:

    SteveM,

The Under Armour Prototypes run from 80.00-90.00-100.00. There are three types available depending on what your activities or daily excercises require.

  27. BowsForever:

    Hope Noa gets another shot.

Sounds like Colt had a nice, fairly-low-profile trip. Aside from being spotted in plain sight at that Augie T deal, as reported in some rag.

Is an NFL player (especially a free agent rookie) ever safe from a cut at any point in the season? Or does making the main roster give at least some amount of “job security” during the season?

  28. gigi-hawaii ©:

I love to read news about Colt. He’s such an unbelievably nice guy, not to mention a great athlete. Good luck and best wishes to him!

  29. BowsForever:

Correction: Augie T show sighting was reported by _this_ paper. Oops. :)

  30. FloridaTed:

    Morning/afternoon, Tsaikos and Tsai-Meister,

Nice variety up top, ST. I was about to ask how much those shirts are, but Kazz already answered. A bit pricey, but if they’re as good as told, maybe worth it, especially for Florida in the heat.

What are Karl Noa’s chances of being picked up by another team?

Is there any news about our other Warriors mini-camps?

  31. FloridaTed:

Colt will make it big in the NFL, there’s no doubt in my mind.

  32. rage777:

    HMmm,
does UA make shoes for the semi-comatose couch potato segment of society?
i need new shoes, not doing anything, just want my feet to look athletic.
gotta check out the UA stuff, time to replace my spandex outfits from 1985.

i don’t know if anyone else has noticed this but, the refresh time has dramatically increased from 1-3 minute to over 5 minutes in the last day or so.

  36. Stephen Tsai:

I was in Ron Lee’s office when he mentioned that Colt was in town.
    I’m like, What?!?
So I said I’ll call Colt.
And then we chatted for about 5 minutes.
Then I visited Cal Lee, and ran into Adam Leonard, who told me about Karl Noa. I noticed Adam was wearing UA shoes. Then I went to the UH Book Store. That’s when I noticed the UA shirts.
And that’s how you build a blog.

  37. Stephen Tsai:

Then I visited the NY Daily News’ site, where I found today’s really big story. It’s posted up top.

    Senor Vegas,
I’d like UA to make shoes that will walk for you when they are worn, and a shirt that allows you full access at cattle calls and home meals and you would actually lose weight. Ya know, “wick” away some of that dangerous, unsightly stomach flab.

    Don’t worry, BowsForever.

AOMORI — A couple has been arrested after the male driver killed a pedestrian because he took his eyes off the road while the woman passenger fed him a chocolate from her mouth to his, Aomori District Public Prosecutors Office said.

Hiroyoshi Oyama, 47, a company employee from Aomori, was arrested for negligent driving resulting in the death of a 69-year-old male pedestrian.

An unnamed woman in her 20s who was in the car with Oyama at the time of the fatal crash was arrested for aggravated negligence resulting in death. It is extremely rare for vehicle passengers to face charges in connection with a road accident.

Prosecutors said that while Oyama and the woman were driving through Noheji, Aomori Prefecture, on the afternoon of Dec. 28 last year, the company employee took his eyes off the road as the woman mouth-fed him a chocolate and he slammed his car into the old man, killing him.

Immediately after the crash, Oyama told investigators the woman was only a passerby and tried to avoid getting her involved. Police sent documents to prosecutors accusing Oyama of negligent driving resulting in death on April 4. Prosecutors arrested Oyama on April 7 and the woman two days later.

    Re: Inouchi

I’m not criticizing him because I’ve done it too, but we have GOT to stop thinking that the Sugar Bowl was a “once in a lifetime” occurrence. It’s way past time to get over that “we’re just happy we made it here” attitude.

Standards have been raised. We strive for greater goals now. Next time — and there WILL be a next time very soon — “we will KICK their ass!” Isn’t that what it’s about?

Never dream small. Dream big and then bigger still. Otherwise, why bother?

    Go WARRIORS!

  59. WarriorMojo:

  62. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Romo is the QB who most reminds CM of CB, the same captain of the “Perfection”.

  63. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    OK, gota go now. Sixtyturd!

  64. Garret:

    WarriorMojo,

I agree with both #58 and #59 posts. I think that the “once in a lifetime” term should just be referring to how it was UH’s *first* BCS appearance…as the next times that UH goes there it will not feel so new and different. Next time it will not feel like a breakthrough and more like just what the Warriors deserve.

I have heard nothing about R.J. and look forward to watching him get playing time. He posted impressive workout numbers, and his work ethic should show up on the field once he gets a chance. He is at an extremely deep position for UH, but I think he’ll earn his playing time.

I’m not sure if I mentioned this before, but I showed up *early* (45 minutes or so) for the Warriors Rally in New Orleans and waited in line outside with my parents. R.J.’s Mom (and I think brother) were right next to us in line so I got to talk with them a bit. I really regret not asking better questions to her–I asked about how the Sugar Bowl people were treating the players, etc., but should have told her about the good things I had read about her son.

  65. gigi-hawaii ©:

ST, fantastic news! Now Romo will play better!

  66. koakane:

    kazz,

what are the polo’s costing and what color’s?

  67. Kazz:

    FloridaTed,

The UH UA polos are 50.00. Which is cheaper than the 60.00-70.00 UH Nike polos.

They’ll probably put them up on the Rainbowtique website once the contract offically kicks in.

If anything, you can get a forest green UA polo on their website (www.underarmour.com) for 44.95. Hey it’s green right?

  68. Kazz:

    Koakane:

50.00 for all green or all black with the UH “H” embroidered on the left chest and the UA logo embroidered on the left sleeve.

  69. koakane:

    kazz,

prices you quoted were for shoes or polo’s?

  70. Kazz:

    RE: Under Armour sizing

I forgot to mention, usually I wear a size “large” but for the UA UH polos I had to go down a size to medium.

They are a loose fit. So best to try them on.

  71. Kazz:

    UNDER ARMOUR PROTOTYPE SHOES: 80.00 - 100.00

UNDER ARMOUR UH POLO T-SHIRTS: 50.00

  72. WarriorMojo:

Garret, speaking of your parents, they are just so cute. I couldn’t believe that they sent me a handwritten thank you note for the DVD! They’re just so very humble and down to earth. I know you know this, my brother, but you come from great stock.

  73. koakane:

much mahalo kazz catch ya lattas.

  74. WarriorMojo:

Kazz, you should be getting a commission from UA. I bought a green and black polo after reading your recommendations a couple weeks back. Good stuff.

  75. d1shima [sez:]:

Heard Trap on the radio this morning saying that UV State had beaten Oregon State on Monday. He didn’t mention this happened in Corvallis (unlikely that the defending nat’l champs would go to Orem, UT) or that they were actually leading the Beavers on Tuesday, 4-1 after 3 1/2 before falling, 8-4. They actually outhit OSU, 11-9 but yielded 8 walks to 1 by OSU.

Should be a good test for the Rainbow young ‘uns.

  76. HiFlyer:

Kazz, did you check with your friends, I can get the Polos for $40.00 and the T-shirt style for $25.00 black or green.

  77. YpoWarrior:

You see how “on it” the new UHAD is? Under Armour obviously got “the word” about the Tsaikos, who always appreciate a loose fit. ;-)

  79. J-DOG:

Went to Sports Authority at Ward last week. I think they may have just got in a shipment or something because they sure had a lot of UH Under Armour stuff. They had UH Under Armour hats which I had not seen before. The UH polos however were 70 bucks. Yikes.

  81. Garret:

    WarriorMojo,

I have to strive to be my best just to *maybe* be worthy of all of the sacrifices my parents have done for me. Thank you for the kind words about them.

They watched the DVD right away, then called me to let me know how much they enjoyed it. Mom mentioned that she had already written a note to thank you.

They have been huge UH fans since well before I was born (Mom graduated from UH). I’m looking forward to the next Warriors game I get to watch with them…at Oregon State!

  82. d1shima [sez:]:

    …made ya look ;-)

  83. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

    Aloha Kakou:

Here is the information about the Florida and Oregon away game tickets as confirmed by the UH Ticket Office.

First, all requests using the form on the UH Athletic Department’s website - http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/Ticket/2008-fb-away.html - must be submitted by close of business on Friday, May 23. Here is the order in which the applications will be processed.

Koa Anuenue Sport Package Patrons & UH Corporate Partners
Season Ticket Holders (by priority rank*)
    General Public

*Priority rank is determined by how much you paid in premium seat contributions in the 2007-08 season for all UH sports combined. After ranked patrons are processed, season ticket holders who did not contribute any premium seat contributions in the 2007-08 season will be processed based on when their order form and payment was received.

NOTE: Although it doesn’t say so on the website, new season ticket holders will be processed before the General Public.

No deposit is required for the road game tickets.

Maximum number allowed per purchaser is up to six at one per ticketholder. For example, we have two tickets on order under my name. We can get two away tickets per game. However, let’s say I’d bought six additional tickets to give away throughout the season - yeah, right - I could only get six away game tickets max. This is to avoid ticket scalpers from swooping in & then re-selling them at exorbitant prices.

Here is the ticket office’s suggested method re getting seats together: All individual applications for people who want to sit together should be submitted in person (not faxed) at the same time clipped/stapled together with a note requesting that everyone be seated together with someone designated as the contact person.

A decision has to be made about payment - does each applicant pay separately by credit card or does the person carrying in the applications pay either by credit card or with cash for everyone and then collect from each person at a later date.

Since I’ll be paying in cash for my two and then getting reimbursed by whomever will be using them, then I suppose I could do it for everyone, but that’s not up to me to decide. See form for more information.

Just to make sure that the request has been granted, you should double check well before you leave that the tickets are indeed next to each other.

If you have any questions, please e-mail me at swood at hokudotcom rather than doing a blogclog.

    YpoWarrior,

I have been checking the Houston Chronicle every day for RGM news and have been checking with Google for news on all of the WRs…but I’ve found very little and what I have found (mainly articles about Bess and a photo of Rivers) I posted here. Hawaiiroller found some additional info that he’s posted.

The big problem is that the media covering a team normally just covers the vets, the free agents, the stars, and maybe the draft picks. Even low draft picks get limited coverage…undrafted free agents (unless they are prominent like Bess) do not get much mentions now.

When the later mini-camps and training camps start, there should be a lot more news on the Warrior rookies. If they make the team or are on the bubble for making the team, they will have a number of articles about them. If they are not projected to make the team or get cut, the mainland media will not cover them much at all.

Kazz, did you check with your friends, I can get the Polos for $40.00 and the T-shirt style for $25.00 black or green.

Yes I did, and they saw the same thing at the NEX. Since I already bought my fill of polos, next up will be a hat and then the jerseys.

  86. Garret:

    WassupDoc,

I guess that means that the tickets requested over the website will not be able to be arranged to be next to other tickets requested over the website. Oh well.

I’m lucky that my parents told me that I’ll be sitting with them in Corvallis. The one per season ticket limit and 6 max limit really restricts helping others with a block of tickets, but I’m trying to go through some people…

Went to Sports Authority at Ward last week. I think they may have just got in a shipment or something because they sure had a lot of UH Under Armour stuff. They had UH Under Armour hats which I had not seen before. The UH polos however were 70 bucks. Yikes.

70.00? for the polos? Must be the Rainbowtique only selling them for 50.00, UNLESS they also jacked up the price as well  .

What other UH UA stuff did they have? I did see the white UH UA hat at the Waikele Sports Authority, but white hats = easily dirty.

Kazz, you should be getting a commission from UA. I bought a green and black polo after reading your recommendations a couple weeks back. Good stuff.

Nah, that stuff will sell itself if people just check it out.

I understand your dilemma regarding tickets, but there are people here on the blog who can help out if you ask.

It’s not as if the request can’t be made to sit together over the website on separate applications - it’s just that different people handle the ticket orders so things can & do get lost in the shuffle. The ticket office’s suggestion about submitting the requests together would help minimize the likelihood that this would happen.

    Al:

Re your response last night at 10:42 pm - I posted something at 11:04 on Monday and then immediately went to another website immediately afterwards which is sited just outside Boston where I used my other blog name. Then when I came back to the HA site about half an hour later, the RRD name was “hot” although I didn’t realize it until late last night. Lesson learned - check before posting.

Re getting some training in being a knowledgeable football spectator capable of discussing the game with some degree of intelligence - although reading is better than nothing at all, what I was thinking about is a more “formal” classroom environment including watching videos, Q & A sessions, discussions about different offensive or defensive approaches, guest lecturers, and even walking through a basic offensive or defensive play. I’ll check with the Adult Education section of the DOE to see if any school is going to offer a course like this in the fall, but maybe some of you folks who are really knowledgeable about the game and would like to share your mana`o could do so in a special workshop.

Time to go into work. Will be carrying my little radio so I can listen to the softball game while I’m busy taking notes at a conference Friday afternoon.

Bummer to hear about Travis Campbell. His dad started posting on WSN when Travis was still in high school and trying to draw a UH scholarship offer. Travis was apparently already a big Warriors fan, wearing Hawaii gear to school.

Even though Travis was only offered a chance to walk on, he still decided to pay his own way and try out for the team. Last year he red-shirted. I was hoping he would have a chance to show his skills this year, since he has good size and was supposed to be a good pass blocker. But I noticed he wasn’t suited up for Warrior Bowl and now I know why. Best of luck, Travis.

  97. NYUH:

Still looking for someplace to put that Sugar Bowl money?

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Nick Saban normally spends this time of year on the road evaluating prep prospects and visiting with high school coaches.

The Alabama coach is doing a different kind of networking these days — all from the comfort of his office. Saban is among a handful of college head coaches using video conferences to chat with recruits because they can’t meet in person.

A new NCAA regulation — dubbed the “Saban Rule” — is keeping coaches from making those traditional visits to high school campuses during the spring evaluation period that runs through May.

Webcams have hardly replaced telephones or text messages as the preferred mode of talking to recruits. But, said LSU spokesman Michael Bonnette, they are without a doubt the wave of the future in long-distance communicating with high school players.

Saban and Southeastern Conference rivals Les Miles of LSU and Phillip Fulmer of Tennessee are using the Internet tool. Others among several dozen schools contacted by The Associated Press are considering or have considered it.

“We’ve got the technology in place, and most of the high schools we’re finding have the technology that allows it, so it makes sense,” Bonnette said. “Once again, it’s one of the perks of being on the forefront when it comes to technology, so we’re going to use it to our advantage.”

Even before the new rule, coaches weren’t allowed to have more than brief, inadvertent contact with recruits during the spring, a rule Saban was accused of breaking last year in Miami. He has called the new restrictions against visits to high schools “ridiculous.”

When they went into effect, he turned to Plan B: Webcams, which are permitted by the NCAA.

It’s also trouble to really learn the game when you’re watching on TV. You need to get to the stadium and see it from an end zone view, that’s how you see the game work out the best.

OK, Jase, please explain what the diff is between a strong safety and a weak safety and why they are called those names. Thank you.

  109. LizKauai [Believer]:

GOOD LUCK to KENNY and the JETS!!!

  110. Jason:

Strong safety = safety that lines up on the strong side of the field (the side where there are more players)
Free safety = safety that lines up on the weak side of the field (the side where there are less players)

Generally, strong safeties are more run defenders, lining up closer to the line of scrimmage. Meanwhile, free safeties are more pass defenders, dropping back deep as the last line of defense against a long pass or an escaped runner.

  111. whitey:

James, if you on Maui today, come on over for muu call.

  112. gigi-hawaii ©:

OK, that’s a better definition than the one in the book. Was Leonard Peters a strong safety, then?

  113. Jason:

UH used Peters as both a free safety and a strong safety, because of his speed and hitting ability. But professionally, he’ll be a strong safety — he never did have great cover skills, just good speed. Some strong safeties who are really bad in coverage end up moving to linebacker — that’s what some people want the Cowboys to do with Roy Williams.

  114. Kekoa:

Long shot mebbe, but good to know that Solomon Elimimian is in the running for the Bronco Nagurski Trophy awarded annually to the best defensive player in college football by the Charlotte Touchdown Club. SE has 304 career tackles. I’m so happy I wasn’t one of ‘em he womped!

Also, John Estes is on the Spring watch list for the Rimington Trophy for the top Center in college football. 43 others will be chasing him around the field for the honor.

How come we can’t have a prestigious award from the Tsaiko Touchdown Club awarded to the College Player who can match or exceed any one of Colt’s records?

    Football 101
Explaining how safeties are used in a secondary
    By Joel Buchsbaum, Contributing editor
    May 31, 2000
Editor’s note: In this weekly series, PFW contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum explains the X’s and O’s of football. In Lesson 3, he talks about how safeties are used, the difference between free and strong safeties and what their responsibilities are.

Q: Why is a free safety called a free safety? Is that the same as a weak safety?

Buchsbaum: The terms are similar, but they’re not synonymous.

A pure free safety is a safety who has no man-on-man responsibilities and is free to roam. The old, traditional free safety was Paul Krause of the Minnesota Vikings, who basically played what is known as center field. He could roam all over the place and go for the ball. With the multiple-WR formations now, very few clubs can afford to play a true free safety.

A weak safety is any safety who lines up on the weak side of the formation (see Lesson 2 for an explanation of weak and strong sides). He may have man-on-man coverage responsibilities; he may in half zone; he may in entire zone; he may be in a two-deep; he may be in a three-deep. He could be in virtually any type of coverage; it just signifies that he’s lined up on the weak side.

A strong safety generally lines up on the side where the tight end is, and the free safety is on the weak side. The free safety will generally play deeper than the strong safety, who is generally more posed to stop the run and is lined up on the strong side of the formation.

A left safety and a right safety are called such when a team keeps its safeties on specific sides of the field. The left safety would always play on the left side of the field, which is generally going to be the strong side. He will generally be the better run defender and the more physical of the two. The right safety will generally play on the weak side of the formation. He would more often have more freedom to run, would have to cover more ground and would not have to be as physical as the left safety.

A team that always lines up its safeties as “weak” and “strong” will always have a weak safety. A team that lines up its safeties left and right will not always have a weak safety because it depends on how the offensive team deploys its blockers and receivers.

If an offense balances things out by playing two tight ends, the free safety will generally stay on the right side of the defense (left side of the offense), and the strong safety will stay on the left side of the defense. Teams still tend to put their more powerful run blockers on the right side of the offensive line.

Q: What is a safety’s responsibility nowadays in the NFL?

Buchsbaum: Many more clubs are asking their safeties to guard a slot receiver. Having a free safety who is almost like a cornerback in his ability to handle man-on-man coverage responsibilities, or a strong safety in that mold, can be very helpful in that area. The priority of a safety now is more and more oriented to pass defense, as opposed to the old days, when teams wanted the real hitters — the Gary Fenciks, the Doug Planks, the Cliff Harrises — who really weren’t very skilled in terms of coverage ability but were tremendous hitters and also had a nose for the ball.

  119. FloridaTed:

Here is a question for all the lurkers who attented most Warrior practices.

What is your true and honest assessment of the team through spring and from that, not including fall practice, the outlook for the 08 teams season?

  120. FloridaTed:

    Jason,

We can all use a little extra education.

  121. gigi-hawaii ©:

    Gee, thanks, Long Time!

Jason, what do you mean by “coverage skills”? I thought if you have speed and quickness that means you can cover well.

  122. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Thanks for the edamakation!
Hopefully, this should help answer WassupDoc’s #92 too!

  123. LizKauai [Believer]:

Ted- from what I saw at spring ball… we need to be faster and faster.
And then we need more speed.
That should come the next batch of practices when people are so into the rhythm and the SILENT COUNTS (the Swamp ain’t gonna be no walk in da park) that they can just bolt at the snap.

    imho

  124. FloridaTed:

Thanks, Liz, that’s a good start in helping me our here.

    Antbody else, please?

  125. Jason:

Speed and quickness are great physical skills. But by “coverage skills,” I mean things like reading the eyes of the QB when he’s back to pass, knowing when and where he is going to throw the ball, recognizing the play and knowing how to defend it. And that’s just to start.

Football is a very cerebral game, in addition to it being a physical game. If you don’t understand the mental part of it, you won’t understand it fully.

  126. FloridaTed:

How much (%) better will the defense really be?

I think it is too early to assess the offense.

  127. gigi-hawaii ©:

“reading the eyes of the QB…”

Is that why Colt used to wear an eye shield on his helmet? To hide his eyes?

    Veddy interesting! Thank you.

  128. Stephen Tsai:

Patton deserves an opportunity because he was put in a disadvantage in Glanville’s defenses. Glanville ran a cover-3 defense, meaning the cornerbacks had to defend a third of the field. Opponents figured it out, which is why tight ends kept getting open. Basically, an offense would run a wideout deep, drawing way the cornerback, and the tight end would slip into the flats. It made the corners look bad when the scheme, not the players, was at fault.

  129. Stephen Tsai:

    Gigi:
Not sure where the myth about opponents being able to read Colt’s eyes came from.
Colt is excellent at looking off defenses.

  130. Jason:

Front 7 looks solid, Ted. The defense looks like it will be attacking. If the offense struggles — and I’m not saying they will, but there’s always the possibility — the defense will have to really step up, and I think they have the capabilities to do so.

  131. FloridaTed:

Aah, the Meister speaks. Good point, though, there were plenty of myth surrounding Colt going on.

  132. LizKauai [Believer]:

I posted the great news about Margo on top.

  139. jojo ®:

You go Margo!!! That’s great news to know! We will continue to pray for you.

  140. FloridaTed:

If the offense is struggeling, it will be in the first game against the Gators. If they can move the ball against them, look out season.

The major reason I’m so confident against the Gators is our defense. I’ve watched the SB game again recently, just to observe the defense and I must say, they more than held their own against the Bull Dogs. After the first quarter and great adjustments by Coach Mack, they practically shut them down. We can’t fault them for our offensive turn overs.

Considering Coach Macks history, I expect another 30% improvement on D and that means that the Gators will face an SEC quality defense. I hope I’m right. What are other opinions on this?

  148. Laieikawai:

Hey ST (or anyone else), did you folks already write/talk about Wahine Soccer’s Coach Josh leaving?

  149. Kekoa:

Florida Ted ~ Not having been to as many of the practice session as myki & sjmacro, I can just comment on the WB game. Keeping in mind that the teams were evenly split, one had to assess the individual play first. Then when you plug in the individual players into the team scheme, the interaction with their respective team’s tells how well they did collectively versus the opposite team. To be fair, one had to look at it in general terms.

My report card would show some glowing reports of overall individual play per position, and then within the unit. Without being to nick picky, I would say that when this team is reconstituted into one offensive unit and one defensive unit with interchangeable parts…it will move, shoot and communicate better than last years team.

I like the fact that we will be more agile, mobile — versatile and perhaps less fragile on offense. I continue to feel so hyperconbubalated about running a more diversified offense, thus keeping our opponents off balance on defense. Not being so predictable. My senses are pegging the meter and in ultra anticipation of the 2 JC transfers coming in to compete for the QB slot. Our options are even more incredible if even just one turns out to be the heir to CB’s throne.

Our defensive alignment and depth is bursting at the seams. Somebody is always going to be ready and eager to run in there and body slam somebody. I see a lot of high energy hits in the forecast from this bunch of warriors. There is a hunger that permeates the air when the defense is on the field. It’s going to be like a storm building in the Pacfic, and I can’t wait for Papa Leahey to start babbling over with excitement and groaning in pure pain because of the vicious blows these guys will be delivering on the field.

Ted, this is the real deal. We are in store for one hell-uva-season. I’m with you and Pomai on the Warriors grabbing the Gators by the throat and never letting go until after the final whistle. I predict a very good showing by our guys because they are going to be the hungry lion tearing that gator a new okole!

    GO WARRIORS!

  151. Kazz:

Kenny Patton and Ryan Keomaka “starred” in a video presentation by Coach Miano during the coaches’ clinic and I must say Patton looked IMPRESSIVE.

Just validates that CB’s are some of, if not, the most athletic players on any football team…

  152. Kazz:

The Warrior Beat - WHERE THE UH FOOTBALL SEASON NEVER ENDS!

  153. NYUH:

    1. Which team had the most potent offense in the country last season? It wasn’t Hawaii, Texas Tech or Missouri. It was Tulsa, which averaged 543.9 yards and scored 79 touchdowns (second only to Oklahoma). Golden Hurricane coach Todd Graham will have to find a replacement for record-setting quarterback Paul Smith — senior David Johnson leads the competition heading into the summer — but the running game might be better. Courtney Tennial, who scored 16 touchdowns, ran for 845 yards and caught 31 passes in 2006, is back after rupturing his Achilles tendon in last year’s preseason.

  154. Kama Krab:

    Florida Ted

After watching the Spring game there is work to do on both sides of the ball. I do think that our defense is a strength and should be better than last year. We are very deep at safety and corner and we have a lot more talent there then we did last year. We are becoming to be deep at the linebacker position also, with R.J. and Tyson steping up. I am also looking forward to our new recruits coming at this position. Are defensive line is a very veteran group with big time game. So I think our defence will give teams like Florida, Oregan State, Boise State and Fresno State a run for there money.

I think if our offence can get it together and be somewhat effective, the WAC championship will still have to go through Hawaii.

  155. gigi-hawaii ©:

GREAT news from Margo! Way to go!

  156. NYUH:

    WAC

    • Hawaii has had the most 3,000-yard passers with nine in the last 10 years. All nine have been consecutive. Hawaii also has had the most 1,000-yard receivers over that span with 13, four more than Texas Tech and Michigan.

    • Hawaii’s lack of a 1,000-yard rushing season from a back is the only milestone that has not been hit by every team in the league. Every WAC team other than Hawaii has at least two 1,000-yard rushers in the BCS era.

    • After Hawaii, Nevada has the second-most 1,000-yard receivers with six.

  157. NYUH:

    • Seven schools have not had a 1,000-yard rusher in the BCS era: Florida Atlantic (never), Stanford (none since 1991), Hawaii (1992), Vanderbilt (1995), Florida State (1996), UAB (1996) and North Carolina (1997).

    • Every Pac-10 school has had a player reach each plateau except for Stanford, which has not had a 1,000-yard rusher.

    • 65 schools have had at least one of each in the last 10 years.

    • The only conference in which every team has had at least one 3,000-yard passer in the last 10 years was the WAC.

  158. NYUH:

    Big 12

    • No surprise here: Texas Tech leads major conference schools with eight 3,000-yard passing seasons by a quarterback (all consecutive).

  159. NYUH:

    WAC
    School 1,000-yard rushers 3,000-yard passers 1,000-yard receivers
    Boise State 6 4 3
    Fresno State 7 1 3

I think if our offence can get it together and be somewhat effective, the WAC championship will still have to go through Hawaii.

Kama, more specifically if another WAC team wants our title they have to go through Ohai St. in Wahiawa on a late Saturday night to get it!!!!

I think in the coming years with an emphasis on being more balance on offense, the running game will get going and we will see a thousand yard rusher coming out of Hawaii. I think it might even happen this year with Daniel Libre or Leon Wright-Jackson.

Oh and thanks for the stats.

  164. Kama Krab:

    Eh Kazz

I no think that going happen so I guess we coming home with another WAC championship than.

    GO WARRIORS!!!!

So, I’m puttering around the site, and discovered a filter.
Apparently there have been 933 comments on this post today, but only 165 made it through. I guess there’s a mean spam filter.

Football Basics 101 for Gigi and Liz:

You know that there are 11 players on the field for each team. Before each offensive play, the ball is placed on the field by officials at the approrpiate yardline. That yardline is then called the line of scrimmage. Once the ball is set down at the line of scrimmage by the officials, it is then ready for the offense to run a play.

The offense always has to have at least seven men deployed on the line of scrimmage. Of these seven, five are interior linemen. The remaining two of the seven are called “ends”. Can you guess why?

One of the five interior linemen has the responsibility to snap or hike the ball on each play. He is called the center. On either side of the center are the guards. On either side of the guards are the tackles. The center plus the two guards plus the two tackles are the true heart of any offense. Except in certain very rare or very weird situations, all these guys do is block. It is against the rules for them to catch a non-deflected pass or to receive a hand off from the quarterback. These guys do all the hard work, but never get any publicity except when they mess up.

On the outside of the two tackles are the ends. In the old days most teams would keep one end very close to the tackle while the other end would line up much farther away from the tackle. Can you guess which one was called the tight end and which one was called the split end?

Generally, most teams would have the tight end on the right side and the split end on the left side, but this could change from play to play and would vary from team to team.

In any case the side of offense where the tight end lines up is called the strong side. The side with the split end is therefore called the weak side. The reason the tight end side is called the strong side is a reference to the team’s running game. Because the tight end is lined up close to the tackle, he serves as an extra blocker on that side for running plays thus it is “stronger” than the other side of the line.

Behind the seven guys on the line of scrimmage, the offense has four backs. Can you guess why they were called backs?

Old school style, these four backs were called the quarterback, the half back and the full back, depending upon where they would line up. The fourth back could either line up as another half back or could split wide as another receiver, depending upon what kind of offensive system the team uses.

There have been many changes in offensive systems over the years. Hawaii uses an offense in which two of the four backs are split out wide as receivers, leaving only the quarterback and one running back behind the interior linemen. Hawaii also does not use a tight end thus you have four receivers split out wide to catch passes on every play.

Switching to the defense, there are no rules as far as I know concerning how many defensive players must line up on the line of scrimmage. Most BASIC defense schemes will use three defensive line men with four linebackers behind them or four linemen with three linebackers. You often hear these players are referred to as the front seven.

Behind the front seven you have four defensive backs. These four defensive backs are generally divided into two cornerbacks and two safetys. The cornerbacks generally have the responsibility to cover the opposing team’s wide receivers. Depending upon the defensive scheme, some teams always have their best cornerback cover the other team’s best wide receiver. The cornerback simply finds out where that receiver is lining up and goes over to cover him.

Traditionally, the safetys were divided into a strong safety and a weak safety/free safety. The strong safety would line up on the same side as the tight end. If the offense used a running play, the strong safety was expected to provide strong run support, which would often mean fight off a block from the tight end. If the offense used a passing play, the strong safety might have to cover the tight end if the tight end went out for a pass. The weak safety/free safety was used differently by different teams, but he often did not have a specific coverage assignment and could freelance or roam a bit.

    Nuff for today.
