Keomaka signs with indoor-league team

May 15th, 2008 by Stephen Tsai

Cornerback Ryan Keomaka has signed a deal to play for the Billings (Mont.) Outlaws of the United Indoor Football League.
Keomaka's first game is Saturday.
Keomaka also is expected to receive a tryout with the Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders also have expressed interest in defensive tackle Michael Lafaele.

Timo Paepule and A.J. Martinez will participate in Sunday's graduation ceremony in the Stan Sheriff Center.
Myron Newberry and Jake Patek are scheduled to complete work on their degrees this summer and also are eligible to participate in Sunday's ceremony. Patek said he has decided not to walk the line this weekend.

* * *

Plans are in the works for the real Coach Mack — Heather McMackin — to lead a clinic on the women's perspective of football.
Heather, wife of what's-his-name, ran a similar for-women-only clinic at Texas Tech.
She'll go over the basic rules and plays. There also is a uniform demonstration that is the highlight of the clinic.
The clinic will be conducted sometime before the start of training camp in August.

* * *

At the moment, wideout Jett Jasper is not on the tentative training-camp roster, although he has been invited to join the team on the first day of the fall semester. The coaches love Jasper's work ethic and attention to detail, and they are trying to find a way to squeeze him into training camp.

Another setback for Manoa lettuce, Kahuku corn and Maui onion:

Taro is in line to become Hawaii's official state plant this summer.
Acting Gov. James "Duke" Aiona signed the bill into law Wednesday.

    Wow! A clinic!

  2. Kazz:

    My goodness...

The Mack Pack is all over the place!!!!

  3. Stephen Tsai:

    Unfortunately, Jason can't attend.
But it'll be cool that Gigi, Doc and Liz can go and pick up a few pointers.
Then they can come back and tell us what's going on.

  4. Jason:

How about we supplement that clinic with a Tsaiko chat — Ronnie as our guest host. :-)

  5. Stretch:

I think it is a good thing to try and reach out to the people that don't understand the game and want to learn. It will create interest and increase attendance to the games. One thing I worry about, what if there is a male who doesn't know the game and wants to attend?? Kind of shame to learn from a lady.

  6. jojo ®:

    typo?

  7. homey ®:

Congratulations to Timo Paepule and A.J. Martinez! Good job!

Also, congratulations to Myron Newberry and Jake Patek!

XLiz will stay positive no matter what situation Jasper is in. She's like that you know.

Tidbit - Congratulations to Anya for being the runner-up in Cycle 10 of America's next top model. She's from Hawaii (originally from Russia) and went/goes to Waipahu High school...so my daughter says.

  8. Jason:

I can borrow one of gigi's mu‘umu‘u, no one will know. ;-)

  9. homey ®:

jojo - maybe her name is "Healther"???

  10. homey ®:

Jason - That's right, you look just like her...

  11. Stretch:

homey - maybe that was Jason in the blue muumuu on the driving range??

  12. homey ®:

Stretch - You mean Jason has been working out? His triceps are huge!

  13. gigi-hawaii ©:

"Heal-ther"???? Heather, here we come! Guys are not allowed, sorry, with or without muumuu.

  14. gigi-hawaii ©:

How can Jase look like me? His hair is much longer than mine!

  15. Stephen Tsai:

And Jason golfs vertically, as opposed to Gigi, who appears (from the video) to levitate sideways while hitting.

  16. Jason:

Who said I'd look like gigi if I wear a mu‘umu‘u? No, I'll look like James.

Seriously, though, I think this is a great idea. Get more of the ladies to the games — particularly mothers. Not only gets more families to the games, but also helps with the development of youth football, as mothers have less anxiety over letting their kids play the game since they have a better understanding of it.

  17. homey ®:

Hey ST. Do you golf? I'm thinking about getting the 'ol hickory sticks out of storage and having them re-gripped and take some professional lessons from Kekoa.

  18. jojo ®:

    no more typo

  19. Stephen Tsai:

I only golf on the windmill courses.

  20. homey ®:

Jason - I always have to explain to the wifey about punts. She keeps telling me why do the just let the punt go in the endzone? Why don't they catch it and run? How come the other team watches the ball roll and then touch it when it stops? and on and on and on...

  21. Stephen Tsai:

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line

I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day is through
Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you
Because you're mine, I walk the line

  22. homey ®:

ST - You golf in Holland?

  23. Stephen Tsai:

All of which leads me to thinking about grad songs. What's your favorite grad song?
At Roosevelt, we did the "We Will Rock You" chant before we walked out. Our grad song was Hawai‘i Aloha. Not sure why.

  24. Stephen Tsai:

For brother Mike's graduation at Kalani, they sang, "That's What Friends Are For."
Of course, some wiseacres put on dark glasses during the Stevie Wonder part.

  25. koakane:

    moved over from previous blog.

    26th!

  27. homey ®:

Sheesh, if I recall correctly, "Times of Your Life" was our grad song...or was it the year before. So I graduated twice...

  28. Stephen Tsai:

26 is a Heptagonal Pyramidal Number.
Sum of the 1st four Mersenne numbers=26.
The Great Rhombicuboctahedron is an Archimedean Solid with 26 Faces.
The Chemical Element Iron has an atomic number of 26.
The 26 ganglions of the sympathetic system of the Human body.
The 26 letters of the Latin alphabet.
The 26 letters of the English Alphabet.
The Sumerians used a zodiac including 13 constellations and 26 main stars.

Now why is it that women can have "Women only" things but men are not allowed to have "Men only" type things????

  30. gigi-hawaii ©:

remember when you were 26 years old? That was a junk age for me. I am much happier now at age 99.

  31. bonar:

    exactly!

  32. Kazz:

    RE: Graduation Song

When they played "Pomp and Circumstance" during our graduation, a friend of mine proceeded to walk out with makeshift tassels hanging off his arms and began pointing aimlessly into the crowd ala Macho Man Randy Savage.

Oh yeah and someone threw up.

  33. homey ®:

    26 - sum of the 5th, 6th, and 7th Fibonacci numbers...Knights Templar.

  34. Stephen Tsai:

    Those who wore No. 26:

    ST- waxin poetic this morning!

xs-homey- you are right. GO JETT!

    Football 101- sounds good.
Actually, Ronnie could do it - then the guys could show with regular clothes and no shame.

  36. Stephen Tsai:

When I was 26, my daughter was 1, the Mets won the World Series (I have a Bill Buckner autograph) and I was named the UH basketball beat writer.

  37. Stephen Tsai:

    But back to graduation songs.
Remember that one by the Beach Boys? It's only available on the live album? That's the one where one of the Boys jumps in and sings the closing line too early.

  38. Stephen Tsai:

The most exciting, for me, non-Tsai graduation was when Colt was announced.

We could have a men's only wet t-shirt contest.

  43. LizKauai [Believer]:

ST- remember to take your meds.

I don't remember our grad song but our Freshman dance theme was Popsicles and Icicles, I think.

  44. homey ®:

Back then, many of us HS graduates could legally enjoy a bathtub full of beers, asti spumante, gallo, tj swann, and boones farm strawberry hill.

  45. homey ®:

XLiz - No worry, I don't expect you to recall something that happened over 60 years ago.

  46. Stephen Tsai:

    Homey in a wet t-shirt?
That last stampede is folks running to the exit of this blog.

  47. Stephen Tsai:

In five years and two days, Jason will be 26.

  57. Stephen Tsai:

Let's see, I started with the graduation announcement, then I started humming along to Walk The Line, then I thought of Hawai‘i Aloha, and then ...

  58. Stephen Tsai:

OK, it's official. We're going to have a Men of the Warrior Beat calendar.

  59. homey ®:

So according to ST, I'm pretty much on topic today.

  60. Stephen Tsai:

    Re: blog rules.

Can I be February? It's a short month.

  63. Loa:

homey now tell the truth you wouldn't want to meet that wahine in a dark ally would you? LOL

  66. LizKauai [Believer]:

So - ah - what kind of calendar are we having? I just saw The Full Monty for the first time last week... not that there would be any connection to a calendar...

  67. Bulla:

    homey,
i'd like to see you in november, it's turkey month :)

  68. Bulla:

unless we're giving out binoculars, i'm out of the equation

  69. LizKauai [Believer]:

February - brown paper bag with koa chopstix
March - brew808 - green Warrior cap with ticket stubs and pins.

    hmmm

  70. Bulla:

  72. A-House:

    Pomai:

Your #256 post only 13 points????????

Just means that "betting line folks" don't have much confidence in florida and/or much confidence in Hawaii. Where are the so-called "football experts" who rate the Warriors so lowwwwwwwwwwwwwww?

    How can a pre-season #5 team "give" only 13 points against a pre-season #88?

Don't matter to me because on 8/27/08 I will be in Harrah's with some $$$ to place on UH.

  73. Stephen Tsai:

Yes, Liz, you saw the Full Monty for the plot.

  74. Jason:

So the story behind our graduation song goes like this — it was supposed to be Josh Groban's You Raise Me Up. Then one day, a friend of mine contacts me on AIM. She knows I like listening to local/Hawaiian music, so she asked me what was the name of a certain song, and she gave me a line or two of the lyrics. I said, "That's Good Times Together by C&K." Then a few weeks before graduation, I found out that was our song.

  75. Stephen Tsai:

On a topic related to A-House's topic, why the heck did the casino give additional markers to Sir Charles when he already owed six figures?

  76. Stephen Tsai:

You're a man of influence, Jason.

  77. Stephen Tsai:

Of course, if she only heard Jason say "Good Times," then his class would have sung:

    Good Times.
Any time you meet a payment.
    Good Times.
Any time you need a friend.
    Good Times.
Any time you're out from under.

Not getting hastled, not getting hustled.
    Keepin' your head above water,
Making a wave when you can.

    Temporary lay offs.
    Good Times.
    Easy credit rip offs.
    Good Times.
    Scratchin' and surviving.
    Good Times.
    Hangin in a chow line
    Good Times.
Ain't we lucky we got 'em
    Good Times.

  78. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

Great!!! Will be there no matter what unless another SUV broadsides the car at 35+ mph.

Although I'd watched games since young kid days, it wasn't until digital camera techniques came along about a decade ago that the game became somewhat more clear. Up to then, it was just 21 guys jumping all over each other trying to stop or help the 22nd guy throw or run with the football.

However, the announcers and the analysts all assume that everyone who's watching the game knows what a "strong safety" or a "cornerback" or a "shovel pass" is.

For example, I had no idea that there were two very different ways for the center to get the ball to the quarterback until this past season. Once I learned that, I looked at a couple of UH games we'd recorded earlier and could clearly see the difference between its initial move and the one used by professional teams.

What I still don't understand is why the intended receiver cannot be tackled before the ball gets to him when it seems like it's open season on the passer. .

Again, mahalo to Coach Heather McMackin. Maybe I'll learn the answer to that one in the workshop. When will the date/time/location/cost be announced.

  79. A-House:

    mctruck:

Your #304 post - UH charter a plane for all away games.

Like that very much -- extra seats can be sold to anyone who wants to pay fair price to/from each game. Contract with a travel agency to put the plane/hotel package so fans can stay at the same hotel as the team. Can even "temp" hire Aloha flight attendents.

We did that for the 1992 Holiday Bowl when Didi Ahyou put us on the same plane as the UH Band.

  80. bonar:

The line reflects how money's being played. I'm sure the line will fluctuate a great deal before the game is played. If you're a Florida fan, put your money down now!

  81. Pomai:

A-House it isn't going to be a blow-out but we will win we will romp in da swamp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  82. Jason:

That's a rule, WassupDoc. It's called pass interference. If they didn't allow that, then why bother having receivers run routes at all — the defender would just knock the receiver down from the start. There would be no passing game in existence. Instead, the rules allow for contact in the first five yards from the line of scrimmage, then no contact after that. If a defender contacts a receiver while the ball is in the air, that's defensive pass interference. Similarly, if a receiver contacts a defender, that's offensive pass interference.

Note: An official can determine that such contact was "incidental," e.g., the defender and the receivers' feet tangled together while running. Another exception is if the defender has position on the ball, and accidentally makes contact. The idea behind pass interference is to prevent malicious contact that would hinder one party from being able to make the reception or interception.

  83. Bulla:

they played music at graduation? where was i?

  84. Stephen Tsai:

Bonar is correct. The line has to do with what will create an equal number of bets on both sides.

If anybody is in the Salt Lake City area — in Utah, not near Moanalua High School — in late July, stop by the WAC Football Preview.
    It runs July 22-24.
All of the WAC coaches and top players will be there.

  89. Jason:

We definitely need a picture of prideperiod. Then when anybody complains about off-topic posting, we just show them that picture. :-)

  90. Stephen Tsai:

    A-House:
The benefit of a charter is convenience and comfort.
With Aloha charters last year, there was an empty seat between the players.
That's why the Sugar Bowl charters were a miserable experience. They packed the planes with so many different folks. Ryan Grice-Mullins said the players didn't know a lot of the people on board.
The main problem with the charters now is there are no available planes in Hawaii. So a plane has to fly over empty to Hawaii to get the team. Of course, you can charge people to fly on that portion, but that's a pretty select pool.

  91. Jason:

chawan_cut: I think I'm going to go tonight. I've never been able to go to every game in a baseball series, cause I never can make those Sunday games. I'll be sure to bring my glove. :-)

Stephen: So for the past few weeks at UH, the Gideons have been passing out free pocket New Testament Bibles. I struck a conversation with one of them; when he asked me where I congregate, I told him Salt Lake. Had to explain that it was the one by HNL Airport, not the one in Utah. :-D

    Breaking down the WAC

    1. Hello my name is …: So much seems new. New coach, new quarterback, new receivers, new systems. There's also coming off a first BCS bowl game … and its embarrassing outcome. From the outside, it would appear that the Warriors have lost their momentum as the sun sets on the greatest run in program history. But new coach Greg McMackin seemed to stick his finger in the enthusiasm leak during spring. Count on defiance and an "us-against-the-haters" mentality fueling Hawaii in 2008.

Chawan-cut & Jason: We'll be at all three baseball games. Drop by to say hello if you're in the neighborhood - third base line orange nosebleed seats about four rows up from the concourse.

Jason - mahalo for the explanation with respect to the receiver. Why then is it okay to go after the passer? Who, if anyone, protects the receiver - is that what the offensive line does or is their only task to stop the defense from getting to the passer?

Oh, oh - look at the time - have a 1 pm meeting in town. Look forward to a solid weekend of sports and a major community service project on Sunday afternoon. Hope to see some of you at Murakami Stadium.

  111. chawan_cut:

dang dial up. sorry for the double post.

See, if DPK went to Roosevelt, he'd know the difference between ninth and "tent."

It's like the Who's Who books.
You know, plop down $90, and all of a sudden you're a "distinguished alumnus."
The best thing, though, is it contains phone numbers, so I can use it as a resource to contact my fellow big-headed grads.

  114. NYUH:

    Kazz,

I agree. This is not 2005 and the US football community doesn't get the McMagic yet.

  115. LizKauai [Believer]:

    gigi- _moi_ - social butterfly???
    bwahahaha. Only for Tsai-ko stuff.
besides, I only went to 3 classes at KCC - two photography darkroom classes and vocal music last fall.
    non-credit.

  116. oldie:

    LizKauai,

oldie - we are not off topic… ST started this…

    I guess that's called the Tsai-exception.

  117. NYUH:

Oh, and I don't mean McCain.

    2. Getting defensive: The offense started learning this spring, but the defense seems to be figuring stuff out on its own -- it should rank among the best in the WAC again, even with the departure of six starters. McMackin believes the front seven will be as good as any in the conference, led by linebackers Solomon Elimimian and Adam Leonard and end David Veikune. While there are three new starters on the line, they combined for 11.5 tackles for a loss last year and played extensively.

  118. NYUH:

I think this is one a major keys to season...

    3. No worries with the feet: Both first-team WAC kicker Dan Kelly and punter Tim Grasso are back. Kelly wasn't always consistent a year ago but he performed well under pressure, while Grasso likely will need to improve on his 39.7 yard-per-boot average with the offense scoring fewer points.

  119. gigi-hawaii ©:

I have attended almost all of my Roosevelt High class reunions. But I probably won't attend UH's reunions. Never belonged to a sorority or any UH clubs when I was a student, so there are no bonds to tie me to the school. Sad, ya?

Lookit yer email. Tanks. BTW, They are also going to make the monk seal the official state mammal. That would be a set back for the good house keeping seal. One makes wine, the other has a spotless house.

  122. NYUH:

Going back to my 2005 reference. We had a redshirt freshman vs. a junior college transfer competing to lead a QB-centric offense.

    Fall questions
    1. Life after Colt: This should have been senior Tyler Graunke's job to lose, but he had some off-field issues and that gave athletic junior Inoke Funaki an opportunity to top the depth chart this spring and he took advantage, evening the race by the end of the session. Funaki, particularly, was far better in the spring game running a system that put the quarterback under center half the time as opposed to the pure, run-and-shoot shotgun. And the plot here could thicken when junior college transfers Greg Alexander and Brent Rausch report in the fall.

  123. NYUH:

    LizKauai,

I know but its too late. I have gator friends (well, my daughter has a friend who....) and they are quite aware of the Hawaii danger. Although that Miami game is looming for them.

  124. homey ®:

Pomai - I would meet any woman in a dark alley.

Congrats to RK. Hope he and Lafaele get that tryout with the Raiders.

Gosh, Lingle goes out of town and Aiona starts signing all kinds of things.

  125. Jason:

WassupDoc: In passing situations, the offensive line protects the quarterback from defenders. Quarterback is fair game because he has the ball in his hands; defense's job is to stop the player with the ball in his hands.

O-linemen aren't allowed to go down the field when the quarterback is passing, since are not "eligible receivers." As such, receivers don't have protection by players per se, but they are protected by the rules.

  126. NYUH:

In case Tyler or Inoke feels like there is not much to do after Colt's success...

    Do you believe in McMagic?

    3. Where was this schedule last year?: Last year -- with justification -- Hawaii's schedule was widely mocked and cited as the primary reason the Warriors went undefeated in the regular season. Well, if they played Florida, Oregon State, Washington State and Cincinnati -- as well as Fresno State and Boise State on the road -- then an undefeated mark would have earned them a No. 1 ranking. This is a brutal schedule by any measure and a hard way for a new coach to say hello to a nervous fanbase.

  127. d1shima [sez:]:

    Stephen,

Okay, heeeeeee'res Johnny! (actually Joan sitting in for Johnny) But it's still the Beach Boys...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGRSpVl8wss

  128. NYUH:

Maybe UH should buy one of Aloha's planes. Are they going to make any money going to Florida?

For example, Donovan said the Warriors paid $85,000 to charter to San Jose, Calif. for last year's game with the Spartans and $125,000 to Idaho for the game with the Vandals, but have been quoted a $319,000 fare for Fresno State this year.

  129. Stephen Tsai:

    Aloha doesn't own any planes.
    It leased them.

  130. Stephen Tsai:

Hawaiian owns about a third of its planes, but all of its available ones are in use.

  131. d1shima [sez:]:

    NYUH,

    Thanks for the posts.

In their analysis Maisel and Schlabach totally overlook Hawaii. :-(

  132. Stephen Tsai:

I think the Warrior should be the state mammal.

  133. d1shima [sez:]:

Many folks keep going back to the idea of UH getting their own plane. IDK if that's such a good idea; people who have made careers out of flying them seem to really be struggling nowadays.

  134. d1shima [sez:]:

Best of luck to Ryan Keomaka. Now's a good time to be playing in Billings! Brrrr...
Hope for good things for him and Lafaele with The Ray-dahs!

  135. Stephen Tsai:

I think UH needs its own hotel. It would be great hands-on experience for the otherwise excellent School of Travel Industry Management.

  136. homey ®:

d1shima - Not only that but the pilots they hire may fly them past Florida and end up in Cuba.

  137. bighilofan2:

    NYUH

I believe in Tyler and Inoke, yes I do. But the starter will EARN the job. Develop the sneaky mind, the look aways, the quicker feet, the speedier forearm relesaes, yada yada. day gotta step it up.

So what else is good about a D1 scholie besides full tuition?

Got an e-mail from #2 son's new coach:

The team has chosen to wear white cleats with red highlights. If you do not order Nike Cleats from XXX XXXXXX, then make sure when you purchase your own that they are white with Red

    In a follow-up e-mail to clarify:

We will provide all of your protective gear, helmets, shoulder pads,
    girdles, soft pads etc...

Some extra gear you may need to get such as special braces or visors etc..

You will need to get your own shoes and a team polo for game day, as well as any undergarmets you desire in terms of body armor type clothing, and gloves.

It's pay to play...all the way!
Start putting your kids on a rack now and S-T-R-E-T-C-H!!!

  141. homey ®:

I'd gladly pay for incidental gear for a full tuition scholie. :D

  142. las vegas:

back in da day, "undergarments" during football games was one bibidee and a cut off shirt.

also you could unscrew and replace your cleats if they got worn

  143. las vegas:

hey! the blog is back up to speed, for now at least.

  144. las vegas:

wow!, i just posted twice in a row!

  145. las vegas:

    can this be happening?
    maybe 4 in a row?

  146. las vegas:

i would hate to just post a #5

  147. las vegas:

must be the kim chee fried rice, chop chae, bi bim kook soo, and mandoo kook soo I had for lunch

    Believe me, so would we!
    He's playing D3.

  149. las vegas:

things you can do to pass the time

    .
Try to not think about polar bears

    .
(Amusement Potential: 1-5 minutes) This is especially hard, because by trying too much, you remember what you were trying to avoid thinking of. If you try too little, you end up thinking about polar bears anyway.

  150. las vegas:

things you can do to pass the time

    .
    Scratch yourself

    .
(Amusement Potential: 1-3 minutes) Go ahead, scratch yourself now. Even if nothing itches, go ahead. Doesn't that feel pretty good?

  151. las vegas:

things you can do to pass the time

    .
    Try to swallow your tongue

    .
(Amusement Potential: 1-3 minutes) There's not much to say about this one. It is possible.

  152. d1shima(tilted):

    Oops,
    Gomen, las vegas-san

  153. las vegas:

    things you can....you know

    .
Stare at the back of someone's head until they turn around

    .
(Amusement Potential: 2-5 minutes) This works on the "I have the feeling I'm being watched" principle. Conduct an experiment--does this really work?

  154. las vegas:

Pick up a dog so it can see things from your point of view

    .
(Amusement Potential: 3-5 minutes) Think about it: your dog has only seen the house from a viewpoint from 6" to 2' high (15 to 60 cm for all you metric fans). It's never seen the tops of counters, what you keep on your desk, the tops of shelves, etc. Try looking at things from its point of view, too.

  155. las vegas:

    this is the best one

    .
Pour water in hand, make sneeze noise, throw water on back of person's neck:
(Amusement Potential: 5-15 minutes) Always a good gag. For an even bigger reaction out of the person, act like you're not sorry at all for what they think you did. Comment instead on how big that sneeze was or about how there was a lot of mucus in that one.

  156. bighilofan2:

anybody actually get real tix yet from UH for Florida game?

    how about the coaches, players?

  157. homey ®:

My dog can almost see things from my point of view.

  162. homey ®:

XLiz - BTW, did you think of polar bears? I did...especially after seeing "The Golden Compass".

  163. homey ®:

I wonder whose idea it was when sitting in an arena watching a basketball game and thinking, "They should play football on that court."

  164. djmitcho:

finally, some warm sunny weather here in Washington

  165. djmitcho:

    homey,
I don't care who thought of it, I'm just glad they did. We got a good af2 team here in Spokane. In fact attendence at our games are bigger than some Arena teams

  166. homey ®:

Hey djmitcho! speaking of Washington and warm weather, daughter is coming back in June. You planning any vacation time here this year?

  167. las vegas:

ugly putdowns to use when you go home tonight

You're so ugly, when you walk into the bank they turn off the cameras.
You're so ugly, you went to a haunted house and came out with an application.
If ugliness was a crime, you'd get the electric chair.
You're so ugly, when you were born they put tinted windows on your incubator.
You're so ugly, you have to sneak up on your mirror.
You're so ugly, your doctor is a vet.
You're so ugly, you have to Trick or Treat by phone.

  168. BigWave96744:

    Jason,
First you said when you hear a certain Karaoke song you think of Gigi (nothing aginst you Gigi)...

Now you want to wear her Muumuu (nothing against your muumuu's Gigi)????

What's going on at Keller Hall?
See, I told you that you should have majored in ICS instead of Math...

  169. djmitcho:

    homey,
Unfortunately no. I was gonna try and come back in July for a cousin's grad party, but tickets were too much $$$. .

  170. homey ®:

las vegas - my wife already told me those...

  171. homey ®:

djmitcho - Yep, prices are getting ridiculous. I'm thinking of buying my daughter a house up there instead of flying back and forth.

And the thing about Spokane is that there are no direct flights to Honolulu!!! ARRRGHHHH! ...and vice versa! Well that's what my daughter tells me. I'm just the banker.

  172. d1shima(tilted):

    bhf2,
Yeah. I think both sides get real players and coaches.

    heheheheh

  173. las vegas:

    Homey,
    cuppla questions,

does the world smell different to short people?

wouldn't you someday like to sneak on a E.K.Fernadez ride?
y'know the ones with the sign that says "You Must Be This Tall To Ride"

  174. homey ®:

lv - sometimes and only for certain rides. At least Disneyland caters to me.

  175. Kazz:

Ugh, just came back from lunch and may I recommend Tae's Teppanyaki.

If you just enter Kalakaua, take a right onto Makaloa St. then take your first left and turn into the parking lot.

    383-2280 for take outs.

    Ono steak plates!

  176. chawan_cut:

    bigwave...
my thoughts exactly. look how us ics majors ended up. just fine!

  177. homey ®:

Kazz - is it a big place to accommodate, oh say, football conversation?

  178. Jason:

BigWave96744: That's what happens when homey mentors me instead of Garret. And, um, what degree does homey have? 'Nuff said. :-)

  179. djmitcho:

    homey,
yeah, no direct flights. most times you at least gotta go through Seattle.

  180. Jason:

Aha, chawan_cut is an ICS guy as well. Figures. Never did take him for a smart guy. If he had any brain matter at all, he's major in math. And if he were really smart, we'd be mentioning chawan_cut and Garret in the same breath.

  181. las vegas:

    Homey,

    ICS=Irritated Colonoscopy Survivors?

    possibilities are endless

  185. homey ®:

lv - funny you mentioned KBF. Me and the kids rode the same rides! Nice bonding experience.

  186. chawan_cut:

    Jason,
never said i was smart.... well, in some ways i'm smart, but not the good kine. maybe that's why i'm so lame. maybe thats a side effect?

i shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as garret....

  187. homey ®:

Jason - Now that was funny! chawan? Are you going to take that? C'mon say something!

  188. homey ®:

    oops, you just did...

  189. djmitcho:

    d1,
That means I'll probably see him play at least once or twice.

  190. chawan_cut:

    someone's slow.... heh.

  191. Jason:

chawan_cut and homey... Need I say more? :-)

    But Garret >> everyone.

  192. las vegas:

    chawan_cut,
    Why no chawan cut?
i had one until my head grew too big for da saimen bowl.
afta that it was the barber shop next to Himuro store across from Leonards.

  193. homey ®:

chawan - that someone is called blog tekkies. Did you see the titles they hold at the 'Tizer?

Online Operations Manager/Webmaster - Scott Morifuji
    Online Supervisor - John Garcia
    Online Supervisor - Brian Takemura
    Programmer - Tyson Oshiro
Online Content Producer - John Miyakado
Online Content Producer - Scott Nishi

Where does Andreas Arvman fit into all this?

  194. MeiLing:

Dang! I'm going to miss the clinic & I could use it.

Congrats to the grads, Timo & A.J.!!!

  195. homey ®:

Wow chawan, are you going to take that? I think Jason needs a challenge. I propose a challenge that is non-major related. Like something in ocean sports or field sports or indoor sports or ballroom dancing or karaoke.

Hey, what about golf! gigi can compete too!

  196. las vegas:

    Homey,
    i got opposite problem.
about 12 years ago after the LA sumo exhibition we took the boys to Magic Mountain.
one of the kids was too thick for "Superman the ride" and could not fasten the chest harness.
the teenage attendant told him to "just hold on" luckily the kid was smart enough to get off.

  197. d1shima(tilted):

    dj,

    Yep.
Punish da Pirates! (sorry, I'm new @ this)

speaking of da LG, his son will be returning for his 2nd season there.

  199. gigi-hawaii ©:

*sigh* Hubby doesn't want to practice golf on week nights -- just on Sundays. We'll never get good enough to compete at the rate we are going.

  200. Jason:

gigi: Just go on your own! You're a big girl, no need hubby to hold your hand all the time. ;-)

homey: If it's shots, I lose.

  201. homey ®:

Speaking of the LG. Did anyone see this oldie from Cat Toth. I know A-Joe linked it before.

  202. homey ®:

lv - Was that for real? That's what the attendant said! What a dummy!

  203. las vegas:

    gigi,
just go to the range in the afternoon.
walk into the clubhouse and flash a little leg.
i'm sure you'll catch the attention of one of the old men who would be more than happy to teach you.

  204. homey ®:

gigi - Jason is pau school, take him with you.

  205. djmitcho:

    d1,

I've heard that LG's son isn't coming back to spokane next year.

  206. las vegas:

    H,
    true
btw "superman the ride" is scary, may have let loose a few drops during some of the inverted parts.

  207. gigi-hawaii ©:

I am too scared to go out alone at night. Anything could happen to me with my luck.

I thought nights would be better because it would be cooler than golfing during the day.

  208. A-House:

    Charter flights for UH football:

Maybe something can be worked out with Omni Airlines who can bring in returning residents/others from Vegas or other locales using Pleasant Holidays tours, turn around and take team to wherever, then do charters, come back for team to fly home, and take a Vacations charter flight to Vegas or Pleasant Holidays tour to another city.

All it takes is some creative minds to figure out a schedule, contacting travel agents in the surrounding area to take people somewhere and back during the "down time" before bringing team home.

What we truly need is a person who will donate XXX$$$ to UHAD for the sole purpose of hiring charter flights.

Maybe WAC can work out a schedule, whenever possible, where other sports( volleyball, basketball, etc), can be played at the same city where football will be played.

This will help all members as travel costs continue to skyrocket.

  209. Jason:

Hmm, where can we find a good security guard to protect gigi...

  210. gigi-hawaii ©:

BTW, does anyone know the address for the golf courses in Pearl City and in Kaneohe? How do you find them in map quest?

The only course we know how to get to is Ala Wai, but kinda crowded, ya?

  211. gigi-hawaii ©:

speak of the devil, hubby just called. We are going to golf in Waikele cause he knows where the course is located.

  212. Maverick:

With the travel blues inevitable for our Warriors and us, why not strike a deal with Southwest air to get here and back.
They hedged into the gas prices long ago, and still pay the cheapest fuel.

I'm sure they can cut a deal with Hawaii.

  213. homey ®:

gigi - You can go in the morning or evening.

  214. homey ®:

gigi - I would hope you spend additional time at the driving range before you explore golf on the course. I would also get some work in at the practice putting and chipping greens.

Then when you feel you are ready for the course I would go with someone who is familiar with the rules and etiquette of the game.

  215. Stephen Tsai:

  217. homey ®:

Just for the sake of conversation, say those mucka-muckas make an average of $70k a year. That's almost 1/2 a million a year to support this online community. Wowza!

  218. Kazz:

    Homey,

Tae's Teppanyaki is kinda small to accomodate a sit in cattle call. It's more like a get your food and go kinda place.

  219. Rich2176:

    Hi, gang! Hi, ST!

Plans are in the works for the real Coach Mack — Heather McMackin — to lead a clinic on the women’s perspective of football.

  224. wafan:

  227. Kekoa:

Gigi ~ DANGER WILL ROBBINS!...Do not even think of going out on a golf course just yet! You and hubby need to work on your swing and making solid contact from a DRIVING RANGE. The course is not a place to "practice."

You will not only embarrass yourselves, but you will get scolded by the course Marshall for slowing play, because other golfers will complain.

This game requires lots of attention to detail in crafting a good basic swing in order to control the ball. Like ANY round ball game, the key is you controlling the ball and not vice-versa. You must build that foundation first, and that takes a lot of practice.

The tournament you are playing in is going to be for fun. They will overlook a lot of the "normal" etiquette rules of golf because they know that there will be some unskilled players on the course. In the real world of golf, ahhh...no! Course Marshalls are very unforgiving.

Stick to the range until game day on Kauai, and then follow the lead of your experienced golf partner.

  228. wafan:

    bhf2 . . .

Washington State University is sometimes known as Wazzu -- that would be "Z's" rather than "S's". HA!

No, I did not go there. I just like them better than the UW.

  229. gigi-hawaii ©:

yep, sorry to give the wrong impression, but we are indeed headed for the driving range and the putting green. No way are we gonna play the course. So no worry, guys!

  230. wafan:

    Kekoa . . .

    Shucks.

And, thank you for the information on your cousin's (another one, no less!) fence business. Thank you to GG, too!

I gave the information to Mom and it is up to her to call. I hope she does! I suppose I will find out when I get home this August.

  231. Stephen Tsai:

Yep, we're going to start the bios soon.

  232. wafan:

    WOW! Mr. Tsai is here.

Everyone . . . quiet and pay attention!!!

HA! Yeah, right. The Tsai-ko's being quiet?

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-cough-cough-wheeze-cough-ha!

  233. Kekoa:

OK...good. We now return to our regular programing. Gigi Golf alert status has been downgraded to Alpha Defcon Yellow.

You may all resume blogging at normal refresh lightning speed, normally reserved for high mucka-mucks.

  234. wafan:

    Kekoa . . .

Did the HA tech's finally understand what you were saying about your "interest" in their Kapolei building?

All I ask is you leave the presses alone -- they are beautiful pieces of machinery!

  235. Kekoa:

wafan ~ I'm quite sure if you mention Gigi's name, it will bring a big smile to Bob's face, and he will be happy to do the job. His wife knows Gigi only too well. (Hmmm, why did that sound so sinister?)

  236. gigi-hawaii ©:

yeah, wafan, please tell the Sabatinis Hi from Glenda and David. Choice Fence will do a splendid job for your mom.

  237. NYUH:

  238. Kekoa:

Wafan ~ Here is another tidbit of information from YET another relative. This time it is my Maternal Grandfather - Thomas Naki. He worked as a printer for HA back in the days of the old press machines.

He had a huge wooden clunker in his garage at home that he did side jobs. This wooden monster allowed him to make lined notebook and graph paper on it. I used to sit on a stack of HA newspaper bundles and watch him adjust the super fine colored lines he used to print with. Very meticulous work.

Not warp speed stuff these original tekkies operated, but their work was exacting, and they took pride in what thy did.

  239. al:

well that extended maui muu call was quite an experience. i learned alot about my neighbor island cohorts.

at least i know now that whitey does have a hobby other than golf.
and his magical chair is just so awesome. i was thinking of trading for it.

and duffer, is really a great golfer and is well connected. he also rues the day that he signed that "temporary hire" contract. mwahahahaha. he's working 6-7 days 12-14 hours per day. that is more than mr. gigi and he don't got time for a little escapade at the "local gym".

stretch joined us for some food and beverages. i think he enjoyed himself so, that he may be a more frequent visitor....er, golfer in the days to come.

the mama-san at tiffany's is hesitant to allow me to run a franchise in honolulu. i told her just let me use the name and concept and one or two of the friendly waitstaff just to get it started. of course, whitey would be the greeter.

did i get that right whitey?

gigi, we were critiquing your swing. we actually thought that your back swing was better than hubby's.

NYUH ~ That quote has got to be from my arch-rival Big Hilo Fan Man He is now famous for wanting to hang his Banana over the rail at the Swamp. He is just North of insane, and the man operates in a complete VOG every day! But he's the most Passionate UH Fan one could ever know.

I do wonder how he would know what kind of bibidees I wear...he prolly guessed the puka part right, but I'll never be the man his sister was, so the frilly part must be hers.

  245. Kekoa:

Al ~ I kept after David about his short, choppy, back swing. He rushes his swing and tends to hack at the ball. Ask Gigi how many times I reminded him that he was hackin' - Real bad habit to break. Almost like a nervous twitch ya know?

  246. gigi-hawaii ©:

hey, guys, hubby may have a bad swing, but my god, his ball goes farther than mine does. He must be doing something right...

Almost got a job as a pressman at the HA a long time ago. Took a position as the pressman somewhere else before moving up here to teach.

Those new HA presses really are the Cadillac of presses!

  248. al:

    kekoa

mmmmm. that was my observation as well.

men tend to get too enamored with trying to hit the ball 300yards by using more force, when it is all about finesse.

  249. wafan:

I think the presses are Heidelberg, four-color perfecting. From what I remember, anyhow. That does not mean much since at this time of year I consider myself to be doing pretty well if I can remember the names of my kids.

Time to check for cracks! Have a great night, everyone!!!

  250. Kekoa:

It's not a bad swing, it's a choppy one. A swing should flow from right to left in one easy motion. Not like one is chopping wood. It would allow him to drive the ball even further if he let the mechanics of the swing take over.

You could do even better with more practice of making that swing do the work. Run that mental checklist, start your motor, and take a nice easy swing. In time you can speed things up a bit. First you have to train the muscles to remember the swing pattern.

Kekoa -- ahhh, no -- don't do things like that! Too much collateral damage. Why don't you invite the techs and management to bring themselves and the servers to a Westside blogware roll-out party? Be positive. Don't want to ding up Homey's baseball bats either.

Many of the head coaches in college football got together today and they seem to like the idea of an early signing period for football. I agree that this would be a good idea, both for the athletes (get the process over with) and for the coaches.

With recruiting becoming a major headache, more college football coaches are embracing the idea of an early signing period where players could sign a national letter of intent long before February.

There are still major kinks to be ironed out.

Would the early signing date come during the summer before a player's high school senior season? Or would it be in mid-December? Could a school sign all of its oral commitments early? Or would the number be capped?

"I think there are some parameters that do need to be set up and a little bit more research involved, but I think we're headed that way," Kansas coach Mark Mangino said. "And it's something that I do favor."

Mangino was one of several high-profile members attending a football forum organized by the National Football Foundation. The panel, which included TCU coach Gary Patterson, Ohio State's Jim Tressel and Washington's Tyrone Willingham, convened Thursday at the Grand Hyatt at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Grant Teaff, executive director of the American Football Coaches Association, said a recent survey found about 70 percent of coaches favored an early signing date.

Interesting that the Miami Dolphins already have MORE players that Parcells and the new management group has brought in than they have players who were there from last season. They have cut so many of last year's players...I'm glad that Reagan is still listed on the "possible starters" group. I'm not worried about Samson, but I am worried about Reagan.

The Trifecta's additions have finally outnumbered the leftovers on the Dolphins roster, but a thorough look at the roster reveals Bill Parcells and the boys will inherit more possible starters from the Nick Saban and Cam Cameron era than they've brought to the team this offseason.

Here's a look at how the Dolphins roster breaks down heading into minicamps within the next few weeks.

    Leftovers (38)

    Trifecta picks (43)

Camarillo could be challenged by Bess or Lymon based on how they perform and learn over the next two months. Who knows what's going to happen, which is kind of the fun part.

Remember, Tony Sparano acknowledged the Dolphins will consistently try to turnover the bottom half of this roster throughout the next couple of seasons. That means some players that were cut from other teams at the end of the exhibition season might find a home on the Dolphins roster.

That means very few are safe on the Dolphins roster, which is the way it should be.

Amazing that fans will camp out overnight for a chance to buy season tickets for football...paying $660 for just four games! And this is for *high school* football! Some parents buy season tickets when their kids are in preschool because if they don't they might not get to see their kids play when they are in high school!

"We got out here around 12:30 a.m.," said one fan.

They camped out in a storm hoping for a chance to spend a small fortune on seaon tickets for high school football.

"There's only four home games this year. So you're paying $600 for four games."

Actually it's a little more than that.

But this is Southlake Carroll - three-time national champs, state champs four out of five years.

Demand is so high, they will pay $90 just for a license, a permit giving them the right to buy tickets for the next three years.

Many of these fans are trying to get season tickets now because they're afraid they won't be able to get them when their kids finally get to high school.

"My son's only going to be in seventh grade," said one.

"I have one that's in second grade," said another.

The kids of one fan are in pre-school.

The door is just about to open, but the sad fact is, if you want season tickets to Soutlake Carroll it's almost like someone has to move away or die. There are only 92 available this season. Most of these people won't get one.

    SteveM,

I've been curious about that bowling game but never tried it. Lori and I love Mario Kart and my kids get to play 10 minutes of Big Brain Academy (they do a test) once or twice per week if they are good. We mostly play Mario Kart, but Lori has mentioned that she misses the Olympics game so we might play that again soon...once my work calms down.

Wii Fit comes out next week so there will be a TON of Wiis in stores on Sunday. I think that Wii Fit is the game that Lori has most looked forward to...the game I'm most looking forward to is NCAA Football 2009. I think that comes out in a month or two.

Gamespot has been lagging lately in its reviews and I understand it's been understaffed. Considering that the gaming industry is making more successful than the movie industry, that's a good investment for CBS.

I guess the Wii is kind of on topic...

The Nintendo Wii outsold the PS3, XBox 360, PSP, and PS2 *combined* in April! This is amazing because it is normally a slow month and because Grand Theft Auto was released for the PS3 and XBox 360 and was expected to drive sales to those two systems.

I don't remember seeing this posted here. How did La Tech get 2 defenders named to this list while UH and BSU just got one? All of the "experts" are picking Fresno State to win the WAC but they didn't have anyone on the Nagurski watch list.

The Football Writers Association of America announced the preseason watch list for the 2008 Bronko Nagurski Award and two Bulldogs are included.

Safety Antonio Baker and defensive tackle D'Anthony Smith have been named to the award's watch list which goes to the nation's top defensive player.

The winner is selected by the FWAA All-America Committee from the association's All-America team in November. The Charlotte Touchdown Club hold its annual banquet December 7 at the Westin Hotel. The FWAA will also pick a Bronko Nagurski Defensive Player of the Week for the eighth consecutive season beginning with games August 30.

A total of four players from the Western Athletic Conference are on the list with Hawaii linebacker Solomon Elimimian and Boise State cornerback Kyle Wilson joining Baker and Smith.

  329. las vegas:

    SteveM,
How is your mom, the Hibari fan,
    does she want anything else?

  330. las vegas:

    Al,
when i try to bang my head on the keyboard, stomach gets in the way.
    no can reach.

  331. koakane™:

    lv,

I hope she not using dem irons for her golf game bwhaaaaaaaaaaa

  332. las vegas:

    Koakane,
instead of taking irons, maybe she stay taking woods

  333. Jason:

SteveM: Okay, if it's cheap then chance em. But to all the video game players, I recommend you read reviews first. GR is a great site; its sister site Metacritic is not bad, but I prefer GR (for sentimental reasons). Even though it's a terribly coded, terribly supported site. Seriously, it's the site that nobody in CNET cares about; but then again, I wonder why they even bought it. Still, it's a pioneer in the game review aggregate business.

Oh yeah, thanks to chawan_cut the ICS major, who did not want to buy any drugs from the people in my apartment building. He spotted me at the bus stop and gave me a ride home. His friend (I can't remember his name — but I told him I'd forget, and he doesn't read the blog unless there are pictures of Lame posters around) also lives in the area, and teaches at Moanalua Middle with some of the teachers I had. He's working on his M.Ed. now, like me in a year. :-D

  334. koakane™:

    al,

    ouch that one hurts

  335. fake gigi:

    Jason,
you have a pharmacy in your apartment building? How cool and convenient!

  336. SteveM:

las vegas -- mom is very happy. She even turns on the computer on her own once in a while now :) She doesn't need any more. Thanks.

Did you notice what Al said about shiro-bo? I think he's heading your way end of this month. You going to put out a Las Vegas Karaoke Call too? If you do, I think that would rate a Las Vegas karaoke badge on my bio pages 8)

  337. koakane™:

    jas,

were you at UH game tonight? since stretch neva answer, how was the humidity and was it cool?

  338. las vegas:

    Stevem,
    no, missed the shiro-bo comment.

yes, we could do a K-Call in vegas, not many good places though

  339. koakane™:

    lv,

I remember way back in da day there was a club with adjustable heads. use a key to move it to different angles. think it could be moved from a 1 to 9 iron. maybe gigi should invest in one. lest to carry on course, easier to use and latter on when get better at game buy a good set.

  340. al:

    try call kaimuki zippy's.

    "hello kaimuki zippy's"
    "hi, what are your specials?"
"um. you mean the specials for today?"
    (nah, for yesterday you dummy)
    "yes, for today please."
"well, we had oxtail stew and sweet sour spareribs but it is all sold out."
(so why do you tell me what you don't have, idiot.)
"......and so what do you have left?"
"oh, no more specials all sold out."
(argh, why am i bothering with you, fool on the hill.)
"okay just give me two zipacs."
"okay so you know this is the kaimuki zippy's yah. you know the one in kaimuki and not kapahulu."
    (give me a break!!!!)

*things i wish i could say are in parentheses.

  341. SteveM:

las vegas -- really? Well, if anyone could find a "good" place, it's you. Keep me posted. Would be interesting to see how many of the Las Vegas area Tsai-kos appear. Will shoot out some emails in case they are among the missing in this blue blog...actually, I don't recall many Vegas people posting in the last month...

  342. Jason:

It was pretty voggy, and there wasn't much wind. Then again, we were sitting out in the red, so it wasn't too bad. I know it's humid as heck right now at home.

  343. gigi-hawaii ©:

Vegas, I am wearing the sweater over my muu.

Koakane, I saw your message about the golf course being near the old Kam Drive In, but can't picture it there. I didn't know there was one on Kaonohi Street.

So it looks like we will end up in Waikele on Sunday. It's real pretty over there.

Hubby wants me to use the #8 club and he will use the #7. But, I told him the 8 is too heavy for me.

  344. las vegas:

all the irons weigh the same

  345. koakane™:

    al,

speaking of zippys, da oddah night when you all was killing me with fudd talk

jumped into car and went to get me some oxtail (large) with extra graded ginger, chinese parsley and soup. came back reading where I left off and just slurping down the soup when haw'n paralysis hit me. bang fell to da zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..

just in case you was wondering where I disappeared to bwhaaaaaaaaaa

  346. Jason:

gigi: Pearl Country Club is right up the street. You continue up Ka‘ōnohi St. Just go to Google Maps and look up 'Pearl Country Club Aiea.'

  347. SteveM:

True story: I had a good friend who golfed once a year. Only did it for business/P.R. reasons. He owned only 1 putter and that's what he took with him. Said he didn't need a driver to make his ball go far off-line or look bad. Kept putting it down the fairway...

  348. gigi-hawaii ©:

oh, I see it now on map quest. since it's closer than Waikele, we will go there instead.

  349. koakane™:

    gigi,

just drive mauka up kaonohi street about ¾ mile on right side is the entrance to golf course. used to be name Francis Brown but rename to Pearl Country Club. if you driving on freeway Ewa bound you can see part of the course on your immediate right.

  350. al:

    las vegas.

    misora hibari?

why i would die for a 25 year old misora hibari. wasn't she a doll back in the day.

  351. gigi-hawaii ©:

What Kekoa told us last weekend --

Drive for show but putt for the money.

Tiger Woods wins because of his excellent putting.

  352. koakane™:

    gigi,

suggest use the driving range across Waimalu elementary.

plenty parking, not many use it during day and has lights for night use.

usually get crowed around 3 plus traffic gets bad cause everyone trying to get home.

if you and hubby get hungry by dinna there is IGE's, Stuart Anderson, IHOP and Buzz Steak house very close to each other. Also Waimalu Chop suey, Shiro's just a block or two away.

  353. al:

koakane.....that was mean. trying to get us all hungry lil dat.

i guess i'll have to reach in the refer for some leftover beef teriyaki that the son charbroiled on the weber tonight.

let's see teriyaki w/leftover stir fry chicken and hot steaming rice?
nah, i am a teriyaki and cheese sandwich lover myself. oh no forget to add the mayo.so can slide down.

    one or two sandwiches?

  354. gigi-hawaii ©:

well, this Sunday, we already have dinner plans to be at Ciao Mein at 6 pm.

  355. al:

    okay gigi....get it right please.

    its drive for show
    and putt for dough.

  356. al:

tiger wins because he is excellent period.

  357. SteveM:

ahem... no need die, Al. I'm sure you can negotiate something with las vegas.
Take Maryann(e) to a Muu Call maybe

  358. koakane™:

    gigi,

at this time forget about putting for da money.

work on the drive. get there first because no use put out in one when you arrive in eight.

    that's mho

  359. gigi-hawaii ©:

al, I'll take your word for it.

    gonna head for bed.

    g'nite, folks.

  360. Jason:

That reminds me: So my sister and I want a good steak for our Mother's Day/birthday outing. Only problem is, as we mentioned, we need to go out for lunch. We looked at Cattle Company next to Gyotaku in ‘Aiea, but their lunch options aren't much. Kincaid's at Ward lets you order the dinner steaks at lunch, but the prices do not please my mother. So, any suggestions? Top choice right now is Sizzler.

Oh, and location is important too. I suggested Paesano, like al recommended, and my sister said, "That's too far." She lives in Mililani, I live in Salt Lake.

  361. las vegas:

    Al,
Missed Hibari in her heyday, but what a singer!

i'm thinking Ochazuke before going to the clinic this morning.

  362. cubicle rat:

    cubicle rat = office worker

One great thing is I'm a cubicle rat where coworkers don't mind if my radio is on sportsradio (softly) all day.

Great hearing UH coaches, ST, etc. on the radio especially when they talk Warrior football.

  363. SteveM:

Koakane -- where is the IHOP?

  364. Jason:

IHOP is the same place at Cattle Company, we just passed by the other day.

  365. koakane™:

    al,

there you go again killing me with da fuud images.

luckly I get half custard pie from Delight bakery left ova and ¼ strawberry ice cream.

so while you warming up yours I will be munching on mine

  366. las vegas:

    cubicle rat,
    re:Unbalanced Line
this site has a glossary of football terms

    http://football.about.com/cs/football101/g/gl_unbalancedli.htm

  367. koakane™:

    steveM

    ditto what Jason said

and btw jas what is you answer to my question about UH game?

  368. koakane™:

    jason,

Buzz steak House across from Ige's. Nice view, fudd good. Check it out.

  369. al:

stevem.....what i meant was i would take a 25 year old misora hibari. like in if she were still 25. she was a knockout back then.

    and so was satomi oka.

  370. LizKauai:

    Nitey Nite!!

  371. koakane™:

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh custard pie from delight bakery

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh strawberry ice cream from dave's

    coooooooooooooooold glass of ice wata

huge stomach and smile on face priceless.

  372. Jason:

koakane: See #342. And is Buzz's open for lunch? According to their site, the Lanikai location is, but there's nothing about the Pearl City one, only "Cocktails served from 4:30 p.m. Dinner served nightly from 5:00 pm to 9:30 pm." Because of schedules, it's gotta be lunch.

  373. al:

    jason.....
when it comes to steak i am spoiled.
i prefer to select my own us choice ny steak. the more marbling the better, the smaller the eye the more young the steer, and that equals a very tasty and tender steak. costco actually has very good ny steaks.

if i do go out for a steak it must be exceptional. not just anyplace. sizzler does not serve a us choice cut of beef. they serve the equivalent to a us standard or good grade.

hy's steakhouse and ruth chris' is the place to have a steak. i heard good stuff about morton's but i haven't gone there. these places are fussy about what they buy and they do age them properly.

and steak was designed to be eaten either rare or no more done than medium rare.

btw, jase your dad would tell you the same thing i just told you.

  374. koakane™:

since we mentioning hot muggy, humid and hazy weather any suggestions where one can get a gooooooooooood strawberry slush float? one that will give you brain freeze and at the same time kill you with da vanilla ice cream.

this was my fav on days like we having now. also afta hs fball practice.

  375. Jason:

Mom made steak last night. She cooked it well done. Ugh. I always get mine medium rare.

Remember that there's going to be four adults and three kids. Unless you're offering to pay, Ruth Chris and the like are out. :-)

  376. al:

    koakane.....nice try.

today my client made me two bags of homemade andagi the size of pregnant tennis balls. crunchy on the outside and moist and flaky on the inside. these were exceptional. i normally don't care for it. but not these babies.

so, i am going to warm a couple of them um right now. split them and scoop some (okay a lot of) vanilla ice cream right on top and then drizzle some hot milk chocolate with dollop of cream whip.

    like try?

  377. koakane™:

    lizK,

no can sleep until you tell a fuud episode. gotta be yummy

  378. Kekoa:

    Hi ya Liz!...Nitey Nite Liz!

  379. Jason:

Byron's not that far from here. After the Warrior Bowl, when Kekoa dropped me off, he went over there to pick a couple.

Mmm, that sounds good right now, actually. Dang it, koakane! Oh wait, we have Melona bars.

  380. Kekoa:

Howzit Koakane! Bessball not Berry gut to yu tonite? Fuud...GOOOOD!

  381. Kekoa:

Jason ~ I went there, and the workers were telling me about how their ATM machine got ripped off during the night shift. You know the one outside by the pay phone?

...and yes, they still make the bess Strawberry Slush Float. I invited you to come with me! You snooze you lose!

  382. koakane™:

    al,

to late already nothing to share back with you next time we plan betta. bwhaaaaaaaa

  383. al:

but, i am really hungry now.

i am chewing on sunflower seeds.

  384. SteveM:

Ronnie will be happy to know that Rob25 just RSVP'd for June 19. Mr. & Mrs. Long Time UH Fan too, subject to day-to-day health.

There are 29 firm RSVP's so far (not counting the maybes or "only can stay for a minutes" ones). Interesting to note that 13 are Tsai-kettes = 45%. Goes to show some equity in this blog's demographics.

    Getting sleepy. Good night everyone!

BTW, the June 19 Cattle/Karoke Call info and RSVP site is at:
    http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=eEyq8dXfy_2fHHPIGCSQuo2A_3d_3d

  385. koakane™:

    jason

the buzz here is usually busy for lunch because I think they cater to the business people around here where the Kailua is mostly in a residential area. in fact when I pass by in the morning it looks like they are serving bfast.

try calling and check it out like I said. If I find out more will call you.

  386. al:

    jason, kekoa, koakane......

    frosted coke

    two scoops vanilla ice cream
    6-8 cubes of ice
8 oz of coke/pepsi....er diet if you are watching your calories.

toss em in a blender until all slushy.
    straw
    long spoon

    no need share.

  387. koakane™:

    al,

sunflower seeds? what happened to da tennis ball undagi's

  388. Kekoa:

I hope Keomaka has better luck with the Montana football team named the "Oulaws" than I did. In the first game of a softball doubleheader I was behind the plate. 2nd inning runner from 3rd tries to beat the throw home...he barrels into me and I end up with a torn rotator cuff. Out for better part of the season. Come back, pull a ham string, out for the rest of the season. End of story for my time with the "Outlaws".

  389. SteveM:

Al -- you kidding about post # 376, right? Otherwise I going wake up the Kid and drive him over to your place...

I going to try sleep. Call me if you really hungry... like in Hungry Lion...

  390. Jason:

koakane: I will call them, thanks.

al: No can drink Coke, the caffeine makes my anxiety go bonkers. Can only drink when I go up to Lā‘ie, the Mormons serve the caffeine-free stuff. I really miss Coca-Cola...

Plus, no more ice cream. And no more ice. :-(

  391. LizKauai:

    koakane-
    ok.
Last night I was sooo ono for pork tofu because of all this anticipation growing for the 19 of June at Genjis!
I got two packs of cubed pork at ishihara Market and came home to my empty nest to make a big pot of pork tofu. I added my leftover piece of big green squash too. It turned out very ono. I had it for dinner, breakfast this morning and dinner tonight when the kids got home.

I stopped by Costco this evening. They did not have Sapporo Ichiban but they did have a huge case of Top Ramen (no more empty cupboard when noodles are craved at midnight!) - I dunno - 48 packs? Less than $6 for the whole case!

    Ok.
Now you can sleep. Me too!!!

  392. koakane™:

    eh Kekoa,

so you saying Byron's slush floats ono.

you rememba Kenny's or Jolly Roger's slush floats? how would Byron's match up?

  393. al:

i have all the ingredients. just debating if i should put it together or not.

although i did have a treat today at tasaka's guri guri.

stevem is always tempting me with hungry lion. remember the "whaaaaapaaa!"

  394. Kekoa:

Al ~ 2 small cans of Dole Pineapple juice. 1 can of Coconut Syrup. fill the blender with ice, and grind. When you add the RUM - that's when the boss sez....eh?...where mines one!

  395. al:

their selling caffeine free pepsi at costco now.

    liz must have gotten up.

  396. Jason:

    Aah, Tasaka Guri Guri. :!:

  397. al:

    and for brunch today.....

    pancit
    pinakbet
    kare kare
    pig feet adobo
    diet (hahaha) coke.

  398. Jason:

Caffeine free Pepsi? Ooh, gotta look for that, then. But I've always been a Coke guy.

    Aah, guri guri. :!: :!: :!:

  399. koakane™:

    lizK,

if I neva had dessert already and read about your pork tofu plus ramen I would hurry out to Shiro's and get da numb 35. xlarger won ton with udon noodles, extra vegies, char sui and duck.

  400. Kekoa:

Kenny's at Kam Shopping Centah was da bomb back in the day!...but Byron's mo bettah because dey not only get da taste, but now get JUMBO 32oz baby bear size.

  401. al:

    no brainer......

i tell the owner and his daughter at tasaka guri guri.

why don't you pack the guri guri with dry ice for folks like me. i tell him since they don't let you hand carry ice cream and such. i tell last time all of my guri guri melted by the time i got home.

he tells me only last 2 1/2 hours. i said less now because it may sit on the ramp in the sun. and the airlines want you to checkin and board 45 minutes early now. add flt time and drive home. too late all melt.

he says, dry ice disappear in freezer. i say i know. but, if you take the order two days in advance you can arrange to pick up dry ice daily. people will pay i say. gaspor is near by for them.

hard head man keep saying same thing over and again. i say, you could be selling at least $200 dollar of guri guri a day if not more if you provide the SERVICE.

oh well. some people don't get it.

  402. LizKauai:

    must sleep... must sleep...

Nitey nite for real dis time!

  403. koakane™:

    al,

  414. las vegas:

after passing out for an hour in the spare bedroom, lv awakes.

ho, i wen dream of pork tofu, cheap ramen and andagis the size of softballs washed down with diet coke.

    nyum, nyum back to sleep

  415. las vegas:

no sleep, gotta botcha and go to the %^$# clinic at 0530

  416. las vegas:

actually in the hour i slept, i had a lousy dream.

mrs lv and i were visiting at a old pals home in Hawaii Kai during a thunder storm.
i look out the window and see the hill behind my dad's home set on fire by a lightning strike.
i rush home and start to hose off the roof and side of the house, suddenly a hurricane hits and chaos erupts.

after the worst is over, one of the Genji cocktail waitress' tells me to evacuate dad's house.
mrs lv is still partying and doesn't want to leave, one of the dogs has a broken leg, all the windows in the house are blown away, what should i do?

stay tuned for my next weird dream

  417. al:

    easy solution.....wake up!

    hahaha.

the good thing about aging is that you can no longer remember what you dreamt about. did i even get to sleep?

    oh no. not yet. okay.
    oyasuminasai..........

The vog was fairly intense before sunset, but the air quality seemed to be okay. The view of Diamond Head from the third base seats looked as of looked as if someone had taken an old-fashioned blackboard eraser and run it across the vista.

Less said about the game, the better. How can I put it in PG-13 terms? If the XY blog regulars "played with as much enthusiasm" as the team played baseball, the former would be hitting the bricks looking for ED medications.

Hope to see some of you at Friday and Saturday's games.

GIGI: There are six golf courses within 15 minutes of each other in Kailua and Kane`ohe.

First, there's the City's Pali Golf Course at the base of the Pali Highway - cheap but very busy year round.

Right next to it is the Ko`olau Golf Course - now owned by First Presbyterian Church and medium-high in cost, but it is first-rate. You have to go back out to the highway, turn left and drive about a mile towards Kane`ohe to get to the entrance.

As you head towards Kailua, there's Luana Hills on the back side of Olomana - very expensive, very difficult, and incredibly beautiful surroundings.

At Castle Medical Center, turn right & follow Kalaniana`ole Highway towards Waimanalo - just before the road curves into Waimanalo is Olomana Golf Course. Decent greens fees, but the course is well below average both in terms of upkeep as well as challenges.

Mid-Pacific Country Club is located in Lanikai. It's well-used by local folks who are guests of members, but I don't think most members actually play golf there anymore. They're too old.

The last course is BayView Golf Course on Kane`ohe Bay Drive about a quarter of mile past Castle High School. In addition to the standard golf course amenities, it also has a miniature golf course. Okay course, decent fees, but nothing to get excited about.

JASON: Again mahalo for the clarification about the rules. Next question: What are the "special teams" and why are they spoken of in such contemptuous tones by so many people.

Yeek - it's 2:30 am and I have to be up and on the road for a half day conference by 7 am. Maybe I'll just stay up.

    Garrett-

How does UH possibly get to participate in a Scout Program with NASA?

University of Arizona teamed with NASA to create the Phoenix Lander which is primed and ready to land on Mars soon.

UA is gonna get tons of free publicity from this. Not to mention donations, grants and endowments from alumna, the government and private sector. Possibly top flight professors will migrate to UA as well as bright, top notch students to study.

UH academia needs to look at ways to possibly market themselves this way.

  422. Loa:

    morning gang!

good luck to the Wahine SB and BB teams today

    sheeesh, website going loco again

have a safe and happy day, time to get lost

  423. Garret:

    addahknowjoe,

UH doesn't have a program that has accomplished enough to be picked by NASA for something like that. UH needs to win some competitive grants by NASA--they have open competition for NASA's money that pays for the development. So, not only does Arizona get the recognition, they get a LOT of money from NASA too to cover all of their expenses for profs, students, staff, plus lots of equipment that will *also* be useful for classes and research.

These types of competitions are merit based, with some politics thrown in of course. But it really is mostly merit based, since NASA needs the project to succeed and has great incentive to pick Universities that can deliver good work.

You might be happy to know that UH has a very interesting program to build small satellites that will be launched into space. The capabilities UH is going for will make their program one-of-a-kind, where they can design and build the satellites all at UH. If they succeed, the money and recognition will flow to UH.

I actually advised (I was the EE advisor for 4 of the team members) a group of kids (7 female Engineering students) in my first year as a professor at Santa Clara. They designed and built two small satellites from scratch--building it with their own hands. It was launched into space and they got a lot recognition, scholarships for grad school, job offers, etc. It was also great for the school because they won national awards and got significant media coverage.

  424. Garret:

The ACC has cut their tie to the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise. They are looking for a spot in the GMAC Bowl. I hope that the Humanitarian Bowl has a good backup plan, as most conferences are booked solid for bowls.

Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford has confirmed that the ACC is seriously considering a tie-in that would bring one of its teams to Mobile's Ladd-Peebles Stadium every year for the GMAC Bowl.

The ACC has a tie-in available after Swofford announced Wednesday that the league is severing its ties with the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho, after the 2008 season.

The Humanitarian Bowl's expiring agreement has sent to Boise the eighth-place ACC team, which last season was 7-5 Georgia Tech.

  425. Garret:

This Washington State player (ex player?) really hasn't learned. I wonder if this will get him a full season suspension instead of just 3 games. I bet if he wasn't their starting free safety they would have dumped him a LONG time ago.

Jailed Washington State safety Xavier Hicks has violated terms of his work-release agreement.

During a check this week, Hicks was not at the work-release site where he said he would be, Whitman County undersheriff Ron Rockness said Thursday.

Hicks, a junior from Fullerton, Calif., was expected to be the Cougars' starting free safety in the fall but has been suspended for the first three games by coach Paul Wulff.

  426. Garret:

Notre Dame's head coach is apparently very involved with the Spygate with the Patriots.

This is what it could come to for Charlie Weis. For the rest of the SpyGate investigation -- which we're convinced isn't going away so fast, despite what Roger Goodell may tell you -- Weis' name will pop up.

We mentioned Weis' name being linked with the direct pecking order of SpyGate on Wednesday.

Today, The New York Times releasedexcerpts of its exclusive interview with former Patriots videographer-turned-assistant golf pro Matt Walsh and took its shot -- also detailing Weis' involvement a little more heavily.

And as we had yesterday as well, that "75 percent" number keeps creeping up.

What we're wondering now is how much longer, as one commenter mentioned earlier in the last SpyGate post, how much longer Notre Dame can say it isn't a university issue. Weis, who is emerging as a critical player in this, is the school's head coach. And how he ended up in the position was based on his success with New England, where the Patriots weren't exactly playing by all the rules.

  427. Garret:

Memphis says that it hasn't talked with the Big East.

University of Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson said Thursday he has not entered into any discussions with representatives of the Big East Conference regarding Memphis as a possible expansion target.

While Johnson has said the Tiger athletic program, a member of Conference USA, continues to make itself an attractive option for a Bowl Championship Series conference, there have been no meetings with the Big East.

''No, absolutely not,'' Johnson said. ''I have had no meetings with the Big East.''

  428. Stretch:

Good Morning Tsaikos, Happy Aloha Friday to All (including those not in Hawaii)!!!

Looking forward to golf this afternoon with the UH Architecture College. I think jojo is going to be there. Maybe if she is nice enough, I will be able to video her swinging a club and we can compare with gigi.

  429. Garret:

I thought that UH's now-cut backup punter was crazy for shoplifting earrings (I think that was what he took), but this Purdue player took something even more embarrassing. And he was on probation for drunk driving, so shoplifting was something really crazy for him to do...

A day after he was charged in connection with a shoplifting case, senior safety Torri S. Williams has been suspended indefinitely from the Purdue football team.

Purdue head football coach Joe Tiller announced today that Williams was suspended “for conduct detrimental to the squad,” according to a release from the school.

Williams, 21, is scheduled for an initial hearing June 9 before Tippecanoe Superior Court 5 Judge Les Meade for the Class A misdemeanor. He's suspected of stealing condoms on May 7 from Pay Less Super Market on Greenbush Street.

Tippecanoe County Prosecutor Pat Harrington said his office also has filed a petition to revoke Williams' probation in an unrelated drunken driving case, meaning a judge could order that he serve time in jail.

  430. LizKauai:

    ALOHA KAKAHIAKA!

SteveM - re golfing with a putter. That's what I do, except I start with a 3 wood, move to a 5 iron, a 7 iron, 9 iron, pitching wedge before I get to my putter! I stop counting at 10 strokes per hole and have an annual game.

  431. LizKauai:

    http://mia.scout.com/a.z?s=62&p=2&c=755093

"I didn't find it surprising to see rave reviews coming out of Miami about undrafted wide receiver Davone Bess. While many teams undoubtedly focused on the former Hawaii receiver's mediocre forty-times at the NFL Scouting Combine that ranged from 4.64 to 4.79 seconds, they apparently were chatting or snoozing while he was actually displaying his skills as a receiver.

I was among a group of selected reporters and analysts from the Pro Football Writers of America who got the opportunity to go into the RCA Dome and watch a group of receivers and quarterbacks being put through their paces as NFL coaches and scouts were observing them as well. As I watched quarterbacks such as Brian Brohm, Chad Henne and Joe Flacco throwing passes during the drills, Bess caught my eye repeatedly. In my follow-up article about my experience inside the Dome,

Bess was one of the receivers I pointed out as a top performer that day, noting his outstanding work during the gauntlet drill, quick reaction time, good acceleration, strong concentration skills, cutting ability while running his routes and his skill at locating the ball -- especially while making over-the-shoulder catches in stride.

Bess has the ability to be a very good slot receiver in this league. Congratulations to the Dolphins for spotting his talent. I believe many teams may be kicking themselves for not using at least a seventh-round pick in the draft to add him to their roster.

  432. Loa:

    morning Liz, Garret

Liz - thanks for the info on DB, the teams that passed on him get bachi

  433. Kekoa:

    Good Morning Tsaiko Nation!

(Kekoa tips his Golf cap to ST and sez ~ Good Morning ST ~ didja take your meds!).

Las Vegas ~ Thanks for coming to the rescue last night. One side of my new house was being threatened by a wild fire, and the other side was being pummeled by hurrcane force wind and rain! LV pulls up in the front of my hale with a limo to evacuate me and da Ohana and we ride off into the Vog. 2 miles later we are stuck in traffic on the H-1 East...poof! Nightmare really kicks in then...

  434. BNS:

Good morning Tsaikos, good luck to the Wahine SB and BB teams and have a great day

  435. Kekoa:

Good Morning Loa & Liz ~ (Sounds like a new L&L morning show in the making!)

Why are we not surprised by this reporter "getting it" about DB? I mean Jeez Louise! With tons of game film from so many different camera angles being repeated on ESPN all last season of he and the other Hawaii receivers, one would think that this draft was going to be a no-brainer!

I get more and more *pumped* when I see these kind of reports come trickling in. I would love to wallpaper the studios of all the nay-sayers of sports radio and TV with those kind of reports!

  436. Stretch:

Hey JD on 1420 now. Let's see what he has to say

  437. Loa:

howzit Kekoa - mean vog again today which reminds me wonder what happened to our big island wake up call

wait until they see the rest of last years receiving corp, more bachi, hehe

Stretch - thanks, switching stations now

  438. Stretch:

Does that make sense "Let's see what he has to say"?? How can you see noise?? I guess it should be "Let's hear what he has to say"

  439. Tombo Ahi:

Just following up on my question yesterday -- Michael Brewster is no longer on the Outlaws.

The team Keomaka plays against on Saturday is called the "Omaha Beef"

The name of the Beef's arena is "The Slaughterhouse."

The name of their mascot is "Sir Loin"

And the name of their all-male dance squad is the "Rump Roasters"

  440. LizKauai:

ok, gotta Hi Ho. CULaterz with the scoops from MeiLing.
1420 is broadcasting the game too, I think.

  441. Stephen Tsai:

    Tombo Ahi:
    That's great research.
    Thanks.

  442. Stephen Tsai:

I told Adam Leonard that Davone Bess was in a good situation because he's a perfect fit in Bill Parcell's system.
Adam said Bess is a good fit because he's good.

  443. Tombo Ahi:

My new lifelong dream is to become a Rump Roaster. Beef, it's what's for dinner.

  444. Kekoa:

Tombo ~ Aftah Keomaka finishes "roasting their rumps" goin' be chopped Sir Loin on sale inside da Slaughterhouse! Hehehe...

So are you coming to the home opener Tsaiko T-gate? Or do we have to send an APB out for your whereabouts?

  445. djmitcho:

I think this is the first time in awhile I've been able to view the blog on either one of my work computers. It was taking forever to bring up the blog. I wonder what changed.

  446. Loa:

Tombo - thanks for the info, at first i thought it was Ryan's team but then realized its their opponents. sounds like something out of the longest yard.

  447. Kekoa:

Eh! Da boys from Pahoa marching thru da State Div II VB Tourney beating Campbell in 3 last night for a 2nd win! Dey making all da small town supporters beam with pride...right A-Joe?!

    Go Daggers!

  448. SteveM:

Took me a moment to get Tombo Ahi saying "Beef, it's what's for dinner."

Good morning ST, Tombo Ahi, and everyone.

Addahknowjoe sent an interesting URL link and noted that James is now playing the international circuit...

    http://youtubech.com/watch/Tsai-ko/tdz7BbrKmjA

  449. Tombo Ahi:

Kekoa, I'll probably be in California during the home opener, watching it on Hawaiian Telcom (hopefully). I will try to make a road game or two though. There's lots of them this year. Thanks.

  450. Kekoa:

K-Den Tombo. We goin' take care of the "Ahi" part of your name at the T-Gates! No worries 'bout dat!

  451. Loa:

morning SteveM - wow, nice link, we have an international star in the house!

Kekoa - i wonder if they showing the boys vb on tv, if so one more win could get them on and the folks back home can watch

  452. Kekoa:

Me & Pops are having lunch today at the Plaza Club with "Mopsy" one of my favorite cousins. Gotta give her one proper Bon Voyage for her big trip to Europa!

Poor girl was always traumatized by her nickname (a spin-off for Mapuana, her real name). I'm actually rescuing her from her usual hangout at Don Murphy's. I told her that the place has a very questionable reputation for being a known Tsaiko t-stronghold.

Have a great Aloha Friday folks! Check in laterz!

    A Hui Hou!

  453. Kekoa:

Whoa...Bobby C talkin' good stuff about little Pahoa right now on 1420.

  454. jojo ®:

    HI LOA!!!

Stretch, I'll see you later! I can't find my putter though...

  455. bighilofan2:

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

106 days to da Swamp! 104 days to traveltime.
Speed conditioning time is now. Strength conditioning time is now. Gotta prep for 98% humidity in 93* weather.
This is not easy. This is not PE. You can do this!!!!

    I told Keaau defensers yesterday:
This is not PE football. You gonna play some
really good teams this season. RESPECT YOURSELF. SHOW UP!!!

    GO WARRIORS.

  456. Loa:

  457. Loa:

  458. djmitcho:

Wow, It's almost midday kau kau time here, and for some reason I'm craving some good ol huli-huli chicken.
Too bad I can't get any here. That would really make my day right now.

  460. homey ®:

    bwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  464. homey ®:

Many of you were probably watching "Lost" last night...good episode...but there was another outstanding show on OC16.

Awesome pitching duel between Amber Waracka of Kamehameha and Sarah Robinson of Moanalua. Looks like UH-Hilo and UH-Manoa will be getting excellent pitchers next season.

And congratulations to the Pahoa Boy's VB team!

  465. addahknowjoe:

    Garrett-

That makes perfect sense. I can presume Arizona has built a long history with NASA.

I remember reading an article about UH starting a satellite program. I haven't heard anything recently about it's progression. Hopefully, somehow UH can parlay what they've started into something lucrative that's long term.

    Thanks, Garrett.

  466. koakane:

    bhf2,

must be one beeg luau on big isles because all the imu smoke just killing us here on Oahu.

  467. LizKauai [Believer]:

1420 broadcasts the game starting at 1:30pm.

  468. homey ®:

Koakane - What? Answering phones today? I don't know about the 19th hole. I've had similar experiences where too many swings DID give me a penalty! Damn, I just had a K-call RC flashback...

  469. Loa:

koakane - i think SB at 1:30 on 1420, my favorite numba is 19 too

  470. homey ®:

XLiz - Is that 1:30pm your time or our time? :?

  471. LizKauai [Believer]:

    I gots da shakes...
    Yesterday I woke up with a vog-migraine.
Today I had vog-asthma. Had to take a couplea puffs of albuterol on the way to work. Yikes... before breakfast!
I can breathe but I gots da shakes...

  472. homey ®:

XLiz - Us men get the shakes too.

  473. LizKauai [Believer]:

    1:30pm 1420 standard time ;-)

Hi xs! Get that new driver and come over for some laughs on June 29!

  474. koakane:

just read a funny by KRobinson of UH softball team. enjoy

When we met downstairs to leave for practice, the hotel also set up a table of water pitchers and lemonade. How did they know that's what we wanted? Many of us filled up our glasses to hydrate us for practice. Only on the way out did I read the sign on the table that said, "Welcome USC Track Team."

  475. Loa:

homey - actually i got lost this morning, and couldn't stay awake for the whole duel

  476. koakane:

    homey,

naaaaaaaaa just staying indoors because this smog and humidity is brutal. I wonda if a CR would be good right now.

    lizk,

thanks and I hope you get betta.

  477. LizKauai [Believer]:

koakane- what would you do with a Carriage Return at 9:15 AM???
    Bwahahaha!

  478. homey ®:

Loa - You sure go sleep early. Are you going to peek in on the June 19th thingy?

XLiz - I've seen the preview videos. That was enough for me!

  479. James:

    Good morning Tsaikos...

Koakane - I didn't get a message? Did you call the right number? mwahahahahaha

We need to plan a pau hana next week, maybe when all this VOG blows away...looking over Honolulu reminds me of LA at the moment.....yuck

Homey - I thought you already had a driver.....oh, you mean 'driver' as in golf clubs...mwahahahahahaha

  480. FloridaTed:

    Morning/afternoon, Tsaikos,

Just got back from Orlando, have to go back one more time tomorrow, glad when that's done.

Any prognosis how much longer that new vent will spew out those bad gases that's causing all that vog? Im glad my wife's not in it, she would have some serious asthma problems.

BHF2 is so pumped up about the swamp, how is he gonna make it for another 100 days, lol.

  481. koakane:

    james,

its the same numba your sex probation officer gave me bwhaaaa oops sorry about dat

but call me around 10 if can

  482. LizKauai [Believer]:

Ted- my family in Milton (near Pensacola) is stoked and trying to help me find a good way to travel to and from the game. (including a Gator Fan Bus... YIKES! Actually - that might be fun... especially on the way back home! bwahahahaha) I think the redeye Greyhound will be the way to go. I'm looking for a place to stay overnight and there are some cute B&B's online. I hope we can get together for some kind of FFFFF event before or after the game.

  483. koakane:

kden be back in a while recess calls.

and homey no cracks about recess I know you excelled at it.

  484. Nurse Ratchett (EMT):

Mr. Ted - We have bhf2 on life support systems from now until he arrives in the swamp...Tsaiko-Analyst orders.

  485. addahknowjoe:

    XxFaithxX-

The men of Pahoa are seizing their moment in the states. Man, they get past the semi's and it's an all BIIF state D-II V-ball Final!

    Simply awesome!

    Proud of those braddahz!

Big support from the southern country braddahz of Ka'u!

    I Mua Pahoa!

  486. homey ®:

FT - Well Kilauea has been spewing continuously since 1983. It's the fricken winds, or lack of it that's been causing this lack of visibility. I wonder how much bigger the Big Island has gotten since the eruption started?

Just think, it could be worse if Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala started spewing.

  487. James:

    Ted...

The problem is, although Kilauea has been constantly flowing for 10 years now, it has been spewing higher than normal amounts of SO2 (especially after a few gaseous explosions occurred) for the last 9 weeks. Combine that with the southerly winds we've been experiencing for the past few days and we've got the VOG problem pretty bad. Trades won't return until next week so it looks like we'll be stuck with this stuff for a few more days.

  488. James:

    Hey Joe...

If I own land in Ka'u, am I considered a southern bruddah too??? :-)

  489. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Gotta WillieGrace.
    BBL

  490. FloridaTed:

    KizK,

I definately want to hook up with Tsaikos, before the game at least, if I make it to the game or not. Bus route seems to me the best option for you from Pensacola. With Flight connections to get into Gainesville like they are, the overall time spent would be about the same, with flying more expensive. Also, they have buses which are much more comfortable then planes.

    Nurse Ratchett,

You better not let him escape 'til then, he might be a danger to himself, lol.

  491. FloridaTed:

    LizK,

You would have a lot of fun riding with Gator Fans, especially to the game. They will feel benevolent, thinking that they'll stomp us. On the way back, after our victory, might be a different story, lol. Better wear your Armor, but your charm will be your best defense. One thing is good, SEC fans, in general, respect a good team.

  492. FloridaTed:

    Homey, James,

    thanks for the info.

I'm aware of the continues eruptions, but I'm talking about the extra explosions that added sulfuric gases to the the regular brew, making it more of a volatile mix, at least that's what I've read.

  493. Nurse Ratchett (EMT):

Mr. Ted - We have an obligation to protect the public 1st. His Dementia only increases when he hears key words like "gators/geckos, stink-eye, hangin' bananas, or coach Mack 'n Miano." We may have to sedate him for travel, but fear the King Kong syndrome when he awakes in the Swamp.

  494. James:

Whoa...homey and I had similar thoughts.....geez...what is this world coming too!!!

  495. homey ®:

FT - you read right. Oh where oh where did those tradewinds go, oh where oh where can they be?

  496. homey ®:

James - With our combined abilities, there will be less disturbance in the force.

  497. Jason:

Yikes, that catcher for Utah Valley had hit only two home runs all year before hitting his two solo shots last night. And they were deep to center field, too. He's a big kid.

WassupDoc: Special teams are the "other" parts of the game. You have offense, defense, and everything else is special teams. That's the kicking/punting game and the return game. If people talk about special teams in "contemptuous tones," then they don't know what they are talking about — special teams are one third of the entire team. SpTeams is important when it comes to field position and limiting of explosive plays. One reason why they might be held in lesser esteem is because the players on SpTeams are usually backups.

  498. al:

    today's musings.........

wd....you miscounted. there are seven courses, kaneohe klipper
tombo ahi...your post #443, so what? eh, you da kine eh?

  500. FloridaTed:

When the tradewinds disappear in summer, Hawaii has Florida weather, sweat. sweat, sweat.

  504. al:

what i like about homey is that he always "gets it" right on the first time.

some others live by the "whooooooossshh!", but not homey, regardless of how old he actually is.

  505. Merv:

    Aloha Y'all!
I hope everyone is doing well out in the Islands. Back here in Georgia we are getting ready for summer and counting down the the days til the season starts. 115 days left til kickoff. Good luck Warriors, get those Gators!

  506. Jason:

    Howzit Merv!

al: I forgive you. Begrudgingly. ;-)

  507. homey ®:

al - I like that others live by the "whoosh" moments. If not for that what would you and I be doing? Okay, we could pick on Stretch...some more.

  508. addahknowjoe:

al- No. It's my friend who has a construction outfit. He has a solid hui of contractors that take care of everything from surveying your land to handing you your keys to a brand new home.

My braddah does cabinetry and furniture and a whole bunch of other stuff. This is his website.

    http://www.jeffsworkbench.com/

my braddah is a huge UH fan. But, his wife is an even biggah fan!

  509. homey ®:

Hey Merv! I've seen photos of you! And good luck to the GA Bulldogs! Would be good to see the team live up to it's #1 ranking (some polls).

  513. FloridaTed:

    Hiya, Merv,

Nice of you to stop by. What do you think of our chances in the swamp? We want be the same team as in the SB. I hope the Gators take us lightly.

  514. James:

  515. addahknowjoe:

    SteveM,
Re your post 389. WHY DIDN’T YOU WAKE ME UP??!!Kid -- I almost did, but figured out Al was probably bluffing...he never runs low on ice cream. But we'll get the MIDNIGHT CATTLE CALL going some day, even if we gotta raid Al's refer. You get us by his dogs

BTW, midnight at Karaoke Calls and eating don't count as an "official" Midnight Cattle Call. This one has to last-minute on the blog or phone and can start as early as 2330 :)

  528. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Eh hawaiian! Das some nice stuff your braddah get on his site. Mean skills yo family get, yah? Does yur bro sell to stores li dat too?

  529. al:

yah stevem.....wasn't that hungry lion food great. it hit the spot.
we were trying to reminisce about the origination of the "whappppaaaa".

but, some how the "june jones special" just didn't taste the same.

  530. Merv:

The boys are doing well. Everyone is fired up for the season but we realize that it will be almost impossible to go undefeated with our schedule. None the less we are making plans to travel to Arizona State in September.

I think UH will have a chance if they can catch Florida looking ahead to Tennessee. At the beginning of the season before injuries cut into Hawai'i's depth, the first string can compete with UF for at least three quarters. Get the pressure on Tebow and you can stop them. Good luck, they are tough and they hit really hard.

  531. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Dat reminds me. Congrats on da byootiful grandpuppies al, they look like da Rainbow Coalition of Labs. Looks like you have one in every flavor, oops, I mean color. (I don't want to get homey's appettite piqued) Are they bred from a another Lab or did a fence jumper get involved too?

  534. SteveM:

Ooops -- did we break the blue blog again by going over 532 posts? My refresh worked but but started showing me 10 posts every 5 seconds (on the average)after the first 170. Quit and came in again via the HA main page-- same thing!

    Any other survivors out there?

  535. las vegas:

she wanted to know why the Genji waitress was in there.

  537. addahknowjoe:

    DPK-

Mahalo, Hawaiian. My braddah had some of his stuff in Nohea Gallery. but, he mostly does commissioned work for individuals and businesses.

He also sells Koa wood to others in the industry and hobbyist.

  538. FloridaTed:

    Merv,

Thanks for the encouraging words. We have high hopes. Our defense will be much better than last year and our offense will have a bunch of new wrinkles, Florida won't be prepared for, hopefully.

  539. addahknowjoe:

    DPK- BTW-

my braddah went to Kamehameha from '74 through '77 but went back Ka'u his sophmore year. (would've grad '80) He still tight with all his classmates from Kapalama heights.

  543. SteveM:

las vegas -- the Genji waitress was probably in there because that was where we had your dinner Karaoke Call and you recognized several by name. Not bad for being only the third time you ever went there...

FT - Well Kilauea has been spewing continuously since 1983. It’s the fricken winds, or lack of it that’s been causing this lack of visibility. I wonder how much bigger the Big Island has gotten since the eruption started?

Just think, it could be worse if Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala started spewing.

If Diamond Head suddenly "woke up" would tonight's baseball game still be on?

It would provide a helluva background scene.

  557. SteveM:

las vegas -- don't forget the deep fried chicken gizzards. I was doubtful until I saw the menu. Also Richie's deep fried complete half chicken...another special you mentioned and we checked out.

  558. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

Mahalo again Jason. Listening to the sports pundits pukes me out. They're even worse than the political lolos. Maybe we should kidnap them all plus their fans after renting the Sugar Dome and then locking the doors as we leave so that they can talk each other to death.

RE FLORIDA OR OREGON TICKETS: The deadline is a week from today for turning in your applications before non-season ticketholders get dibs. If anyone want me to purchase tickets for them, the last day I'll be available for turning in the paperwork will be next Thursday as I have other obligations and commitments on Friday.

Please contact me at swood at Hokudotcom and not here on the blog if you want help.

With respect to sitting together and multiple purchasers, the ticket office strongly suggests that all applications be submitted together with a cover note rather than separately because different people handle the paperwork. That doesn't mean you cannot submit separate applications - just that there is a likelihood that there will be a snafu or two.

On these separate applications, be sure to submit the complete information about the other parties including names, mailing addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and current season ticket seat numbers.

Off to work - hope to see some of you folks at the ballgame tonight. Anyone have any information about why Jared Alexander is on the DL - what happened a couple of weeks ago? He was pitching and then got pulled, but other than he's recovering slowly, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of information.

  572. SteveM:

This blue blog reminds me of a story...

There was a TV monitor at a TV station that worked intermittently. Sometimes distorting the picture, sometimes scrambled, sometimes not at all. It was disrupting production because the crew watching could not get reliable cues. They couldn't get it repaired because repair would exceed the book value and couldn't get rid of it since it was not 100% broken.

A new manager came in on day asking why all the technical gaffs and was shown the monitor. The manager reported knocked it to the ground and put his foot through the tube for good measure. "There...it's broken" he pronounced, "Go buy a new one ASAP".

ST -- does the 'Tiser have any such decisive and soon-to-be-popular managers?

aloha, Merv and welcome back to the blog - thought maybe you "ditched" us since the Sugar Bowl was over!!!

you mentioned in your post that UH will be able to keep up with Florida for 3 quarters - what about the other quarter?

there are several of us that really believe the Warriors will beat the Gators - we are hope they will take Hawaii "lightly" because Colt and the receivers are gone - the defense is better than what you saw in NOLA.

by the way, MasaBoy put my wager in that damn there "bull dogs" will be national champs in 2009 - always believed that Hawaii played the nation's #1 team in the Sugar Bowl and we lost to a very good team!

our best to you and your family - Mrs A-House still can not get over the fact that she "jumped at the chance" to sing with you at the Japanese buffet!!!

keeping my fingers crossed that UH and Georgia will some day play again - maybe for #1?
