Manti Te‘o sweepstakes underway

May 16th, 2008 by Stephen Tsai

Forget skyrocketing gas prices and air fares.
The number of visiting football coaches is on the rise.
The 2009 recruiting class — this year's high school juniors — is considered to be one of the best in a long time.
The valedictorian is Punahou outisde linebacker Manti Te‘o, who reportedly has received interest from 30 colleges. Norm Chow, now with UCLA, has been leading the way.
By a quirky NCAA rule, only college assistant coaches — not head coaches — are allowed to have direct contact with prospects during this period. By the way, Teo's first cousin is UH recruit Paipai Falemalu.

* * *

I hope all of you have enjoyed Wes Nakama's excellent reports on Sarah Robinson. It's a preview for next year, when Robinson succeeds sister Kate on the Rainbow Wahine roster.

  2. midori7:

30 colleges interested in Teo? WOW!

WarriorMojo needs to start chanting "I want Manti!", "I want Manti!" now for us to have chance!

  3. midori7:

    oops, sorry

    Teo = Te'o

  4. bonar:

    third!

  5. bonar:

    4th!

  6. SteveM:

    Fourth? and still hungry...

  7. bonar:

    5th!

  8. bonar:

    7th!

  9. bonar:

    i give up.

  10. ryan:

Are the Hawaii coaches beginning to offer any high school players? I'm hoping we don't get on players to late while everyone else is in constant contact with the recruits.

  11. Stephen Tsai:

We'll have a special prize for Bonar when he is indeed "first."

  12. koakane:

    double 1's

  13. A-House:

Merv: sent you a post just before ST created this new "post".

  14. koakane:

    kden first and second 12

  15. A-House:

WOW, first cousins as line backers for UH!! good dream!

  16. koakane:

eh who keep moving the numbas

  17. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    fifteent!

  18. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    ate eent!

  19. al:

i wonder who the other 8 local recruits that will be offered?
he did say that they have identified 10 local boys that they will be offering early.

  20. koakane:

give up what eva numba I stay

  21. Stephen Tsai:

    Ryan:
    They've offered quite a few.

  22. Jason:

In the past, I might have thought, "No way we get a recruit like Te‘o, especially a defensive player." Not now, not under Mack. "Recruiting is the lifeblood..."

  23. Stephen Tsai:

That number "10" isn't quite accurate. C'mon, now I know some of my peeps have been creepin' when I wasn't looking.

  24. al:

don't you all just like the way stsai just teases you?

  25. koakane:

shouting out to A house, Midori7 (small A house), dpk, al (again), jason and tsaiman

eating school lunch again me thinks its boiled or baked chicken with mash potato covered in some kind of butter/oil mix.

  26. Stephen Tsai:

    Jason:
UH has been successful in landing local talent in the past. Chang, Rivers, etc. were big recruits.

  27. al:

there's also a number mainland polynesians that have been offered.

  28. Da Punchbowl Kid:

I am anxious to see how the "new" recruiting sytem at UH does. They seemd a lil complacent in the last coaching regime. Not so with the new bunch. This is why I say a good season is gonna be a big factor in recruiting come January. It would be awesome to get Manti.

  29. Long Time UH Fan:

Any relation to Shilo Te'o, Kahuku's all state safety?

  30. Stephen Tsai:

So I just realized today I'm teaching a hybrid class this summer. I guess that means half face-to-face lecture, half outside linebacker.

  31. Jason:

Offensive guys from St. Louis, yeah.

  32. Stephen Tsai:

    I believe so.
UH could have had the Kahuku safety except it isn't recruiting safeties anymore.

  33. al:

    wondering out loud.....
when jj was here, he would tell the polynesian kids to come play for hawaii, polynesia's team.
so, now what does he say when recruiting a polynesian to smu? come away see the united states. huh?

  34. Stephen Tsai:

Fale Laeli, Timo Paepule, Rocky Savaiigaea ...

  35. ryan:

have the coaches had a chance to offer any mainland recruits yet or are they still scouting?

  36. al:

    shiloah and manti are cousins.

  37. al:

    some have allegedly been offered.

  38. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Is the Wahine Softball game on the 'tube today? It's only listed as being on the radio...

  39. al:

    st
i am wondering if that st. louis grad is coming to visit family or the brothers lee? he is not on an athletic commitment so still can transfer to the home team.

  40. Jdawg:

This should not be on "Warrior Beat" because UH aint got no shot at landing Manti.

  41. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    We can dream can't we?

  42. Duster:

Sarah Robinson pitched a fabulous game last night. Unfortunately, the Moanalua 2B was unable to come up with a ground ball with two outs in extra innings and the winning run scored to break a 0-0 deadlock. My heart just ached for the 2B. Hate to see the winning run scored in that fashion.

  43. Bulla:

good luck to maiava going to ucla; also with norm chow at ucla is vai tata from ucla/st louis crusader. he will be working with the special teams and helping with the d-line eventually.

  44. Bulla:

te'o will do well wherever he chooses to go; bottom line, get your degree :)

  45. Bulla:

    duster,

waiakea team looked like a good hitting team. 5 sacred heart errors did not help their cause. mililani looks solid also...exciting watching hs girls softball, lots of energy and passion on the field.

  46. Bulla:

    koakane,

how many school lunches did you eat...no worry nobody counting, but knowing you, i think that 3 would be a good number......j/k

  47. Jason:

Nothing against Fale, Timo, and Rocky, but they weren't five stars. (And yes, I know that stars don't mean anything. I'm talking about a prestige thing.)

  48. Bulla:

is this the 'bulla hour', haha. had some time to check in on everyone....and don't forget the state track meet at mililani this weekend starting today.

lovely vog, driving from kapolei to town, couldn't see past aiea, thought david copperfield was in town and made honolulu vanish......wow.

  49. Bulla:

    jason,

hmmmm, rating by stars.....that is a whole different discussion. 5 stars.....it's all perception, and coaches who select players based solely on a rating service shouldn't be a coach.....a lot of it is hype, who gets seen, who is pushing whose buttons. very interesting as the season develops over the next 9 months.

  50. Jason:

You guys know what I mean, though. Those hyped up 5 star players, before time, it was always a distant dream, a "what if" that could come true if the player wanted to stay home, but it still seemed so far off until the LOI was signed. But now, it feels like UH is always in the running from the start, that the want to stay home isn't the only thing keeping the player here.

  51. Bulla:

i don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but the odds of retaining Te'o will be somewhere between slim and none. do a reality check....there is so much more to offer from the other side of the blue Pacific. some people say UH will have a great season and go 11-2; i say at 8-5 Coach Mack should be happy. JJ left for a reason, or maybe a few million reasons, but it was the most opportune time for him to leave. it comes down to dollars and sense, the writing was on the wall.

coach mack will do a great job, his pay was increased ten fold....that should have some bearing on his committment to keep the momentum rolling from last year. he is a good coach, but he cannot produce miracles. our offense is challenged right now, and it will be a key point in their success for this season.

IMUA WARRIORS.....and i hope they have a GREAT SEASON!

  52. YpoWarrior:

At least UH can tell Manti that 2 of the 3 LB positions will be up for grabs next year. Even though UH's chances are very slim, it won't hurt to offer & get denied.

  53. LizKauai [Believer]:

MeiLing is on her way to the stadium- a traffic accident has the freeway all backed up but she is making progress.

  54. FloridaTed:

    Bulla,

I'm just a little bit surprised at your small kind lack of faith. I'm sticking to my feeling that the Warriors will shock a lot of people on the Mainland. JJ's teams were very emotional, which is good, but makes it harder to sustain consistent , high level play. I like Coach Mack's disciplined and cold fury approach, mixed with total preparedness of his players.

Playing with total preparedness, cold fury and second nature technique, a high level of play, barring serious injuries, can be sustained throughout the season. You add to that Coach Macks proven ability to make in game adjustments and you will know that the Warriors will not beat themselves this year.

I say it again, the Warriors will shock a lot of people.

As DPK mentioned above, I would not rule out Manti Te'o just yet, as he said and I agree, the success of this season will play a huge part with about half of our top recruits for 09.

  55. WarriorMojo:

    I want Manti!
    I want Manti!
    I want Manti!

How's that Midori? Actually, the Manti story has been developing for two years already as he made a huge splash as a sophomore. From what I've read, it was the family's dream to have the two cousins (Manti and Shiloah) play together at BYU. Shiloah committed to BYU early after a visit from Coach Mendenhall and it kind of seemed that it was game over for Shiloah and probably Manti, too.

Interestingly, though, when Mack got aboard and reached out to our North Shore brothers, there were unofficial rumblings that Shiloah might have been reconsidering staying home. Shiloah was a safety thus ST's post about UH backing off on safetys is interesting because he seems to be suggesting that UH could have landed Shiloah if they had stayed on him. I vaguely remember Shiloah saying something about how he was interested in UH after taking his official visit but that it was "too late" because UH didn't have a scholie available. If I have any of that wrong, I apologize to Shiloah and the whole Te'o family and anybody else that might have been offended.

Anyway, as for Manti, he is clearly the jewel of the 2009 class and I would LOVE to have him play for the Warriors next year. But, aside from BYU, he's been getting early offers from USC, Notre Dame, pretty much EVERYBODY. HIs dad and uncle post regularly on the SportsHawaii board and have repeatedly said that Manti has not committed anywhere yet and could just as well end up at Hawaii as anywhere else. No reason for them to lie, so I gotta believe Hawaii has a legitimate chance. Why not? It's playing at HOME in front of all your friends and family.

  56. Duster:

Bulla: I'm glad that OC-16 televises State tournament games for so many sports. Mililani looks tough. 20 runs in one game is unreal at States. The teams in the semis all have solid pitching, so the winner just may be the team that commits the least errors. Great stuff!

BTW, besides Sarah Robinson, is there anyone else in the State tournament who will be playing softball for UH?

  57. Duster:

Mojo - Please make room for me on the Manti bandwagon.

  58. FloridaTed:

    LizK,

See my comments #490 & 491 on the last blog about your Pensacola -Gainesville trip.

At least UH can tell Manti that 2 of the 3 LB positions will be up for grabs next year. Even though UH’s chances are very slim, it won’t hurt to offer & get denied.

As they say, "the worst that could happen is he says 'no'".

    MANTI, GET CHANCE?

  60. NYUH:

Kids with definite NFL potential should stay at UH. Got plenty of time to explore the vast wasteland of the mainland - and more bucks to enjoy it. UH is a good school and you can't replace the experience of playing in front of Hawaii -- Colt knew that.

  61. homey ®:

    Man it's hot out there!

I just passed a parade and it was raining on it.

Don't know who else will be playing for the Wahine softball team from the State tournament but even though she is only a Sophomore they better hurry up and offer Courtney Senas from Mililani.

  62. WarriorMojo:

Duster, always got room for you, my brother. You know that. We just gotta hope Mack and Cal can work their magic. I mean Manti can basically write his own ticket anywhere he wants. Let's hope he chooses to stay home in beautiful Hawaii.

By the way I believe that Manti was named after a city in Utah that has a famous LDS temple. His name is NOT pronounced "man-tee." I believe the correct pronunciation of his name is supposed to be "man-tie".

Again, if I have any of this wrong, please accept my apologies and do me the favor of correcting my ignorance.

  63. al:

yah, homey i was impressed with her too. comes from a long line of athletic siblings. she got decent size too.

  64. al:

yup. keep the faith, keep praying i say.
    miracles do happen.
can you say falemalu and tachibana?

  65. homey ®:

If a kid wants to go away and play elsewhere, more power to him or her. The main thing, like Bulla mentioned, is get the degree.

Also, there are many players from Hawaii that have Pro potential but UH cannot offer all of them schollies. They look what's out there and make their choices. Power to them too! Main thing, they get their degree and be a positive influence in the community. What more could anybody ask for?

  66. Kekoa:

    Why Canti be Manti??

    Shoots...chance 'um coach Mack...try axe!

  67. BigWave96744:

    WarriorMojo,
You are correct in that Shiloah wanted to be a Warrior but they only could offer a Grayshirt, so he went to BYU offered a full ride early on in the recruiting season.

    FYI on the Te'o.
Malosi (Kahuku '06, UNLV RB - currently on a mission), Shiloah (Kahuku '08 Safety), and Manti (Punahou '09 LB), Levi ('09 Timpview High in Utah)
    are all first cousins

Manti's mom is the sister of former Rainbow Warriors Louis, Lane, and Walter Santiago

Their second cousin is Kapena Drummer Eddie Te'o

  68. homey ®:

al - Too bad UH couldn't get the girl Smith from Kapolei. I remember her playing against my son in Pony league and she was the Pitcher, 1st baseman, and 3rd batter. Lefty too!

  69. Kazz:

Anyone keeping tabs on the Wahine on 1420AM?

  70. Kekoa:

Blogging from high atop the business center at the Pioneer Plaza building in downtown Honolulu. Eh! not bad, only takes 2 to 3 minutes to refresh. Gotta adjust the font size lila bit, but is ok.

Voggy like one froggy ovah heah my bhf2 braddah. Please cool your jets on your island in da middle of da sea, so I guys can bread!

We want Manti...brrroom...We want Manti...brroom...We want Manti...brroom boom!

    homer...bummer

  80. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Bailey hits a HR

    2-1 MSU

  81. homey ®:

al - yup, got roast pork. Roast pork in the car is like driving home with french fries from McDonald's. By the time you get home it's half gone.

  82. LizKauai [Believer]:

Robinson strikes out another player named Bailey.
    Nesbitt is up - walks

  83. A-House:

    WMojo:

I'm with you on your #55 post - Coaching staff will do their very best to secure commitments from as many Hawaii athletes it can now and in the future be they high or low profile.

There are many advantages and disadvantages to staying or going away to play. Nothing wrong in laying it all on the line so student and parents can understand - that's where Coach Mack is so different than JJ. Coach Mack is so "likeable( warm and friendly)" and "trusting" a person.

Every evening I watch the ABC national news with Charles Gibson and I tell Mrs A-House I really like him because he comes across as someone down to earth and you can really trust; just like Walter Cronkite(sp?) Anybody remember his series, "Your Were There"?

Wonder what Jdawg would say if Manti Te'o accepts a Warrior scholarship?

  84. Jason:

Nice that the MSU network is doing the game for us, but this guy is putting me to sleep.

  85. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Nesbitt on first.

    Bell is up.
    bunts foul.

Hitting fouls all over- 2 and 2... long at bat!

Boyce is up, top of the order.
    Gets beamed. Takes a base.

    Runners on 1 and 2.

  89. homey ®:

XLiz must be having problems. Gould is now batting for UH and gets on 1st base.

  90. homey ®:

Runners now in 1st and 2nd...2 outs...Robinson at bat.

  91. homey ®:

    Go Wahine softball!

Hope the baseball team does better tonight...

  96. LizKauai [Believer]:

Malosi Te'o has been offered a scholie to BYU after he completes his missions this summer in New York
    http://hshawaii.scout.com/a.z?s=370&p=2&c=749416

    BYU got Shiloah and Malosi

BTW, Manti the name of a Nephite soldier in the Book of Mormon. It is also the name of the 5th constructed temple in the LDS Church

  98. homey ®:

BigWave - Did you do a thesis on the Te'o family?

  99. UceDuce:

Manti, go to USC. Play with Maualuga and Maiava. Don't waste your time at Hawaii. Follow in the tradition of Seau and Tatupu.

  100. LizKauai [Believer]:

Robinson strikes out Byrd (sp?) I can't look up rosters - system crashes.
    Runner steals 2nd.

    3-2 on Bell.
    Stikes out! WHEW!

  104. Pomai:

Right on FloridaTed, we will romp in da swamp!~~~~~~

  105. Darren:

Mojo – I want Manti! I want Manti! Hey…gotta at least try. Otherwise we’ll be like the previous regime…”ah, no mo chance…no need call”. He’s a rare national level top caliber player to come out of these islands. Has there ever been another 5-star recruit produced out of Hawaii high schools?

I know the stars are just a prestige thing like Jason said, but it’d show that we’ve arrived at the party if we can start landing some big names away from the *name* schools. BTW, Paipai receiving offers from 3 Pac-10 schools means that he was more than a 2-star recruit. Had he chose Cal, he would have suddenly been a 3 or 4 star recruit…poof…just like that.

  106. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Top of the 4th.
Got to heat up our bats!

    Walks a Wahine!

  107. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Manuma is up.
    1-1

  108. addahknowjoe:

    OK OK. For lurker-D.

Scroll down to, "Happenings" and there's a video link of him with Kathy Muneno.

Come on now, D. No sked blog. Nobody bite in hea!

    Right guys?

  111. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Titcomb

MSU pitcher looks shaky to the announcer.

    Single to center field.

    No outs.
    Andrade is up.

  112. WarriorMojo:

Don’t waste your time at Hawaii.

Yo, brother, Hawaii is the most special place in the world.

If there is some place better, it definitely ain't socal.

  113. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Andrade bunts.
    Titcomb moves to 2nd.
    1 out.

    Grimes is up.

  114. XxFaithxX:

    Te'o ain't staying in Hawai`i

Punahou + highly regarded player = mainland college.

Sure there are exceptions...but I'd say its a done deal....look at the amount of offers? That tells you that all those mainland colleges know the same thing. They can cherry pick almost every private school star athlete without much resistance from UH.

Until the Plantation mentality changes, it will always be the same. If UHM and the state actually spend money to bring the campus, teachers, and staff up to par for UH...not stay status quo, expect the brain drain as well as the athlete drain...

  115. LizKauai [Believer]:

Grimes grounds to 1st., Titcomb moves to 3rd.
    2 outs
    Noka (?) is up.

  116. XxFaithxX:

    RE: Te'o.

I do want him to stay home and play for UH, but it ain't happening.

  117. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Noka Walks

    2 outs, runners on 1 and 3

Coach comes out to talk to the pitcher Fleischer.

  118. brew808:

FYI - You can also follow Na Wahine on CSTV - Live GameTracker. Nice complement to LizK's play-by-play, and the awful MSU broadcaster on 1420.

    http://www.cstv.com/media/livegame.html?school=haw&sport=w-softbl&interval=today

    :o Go Wahine!!! :o

    Hi Liz! :D

  119. homey ®:

They did spend some big bucks on Coach Mack and they have a new AD.

  120. LizKauai [Believer]:

    UH leads 5-4 after 3.5.

  122. homey ®:

Hey brew! FYI, I did not go to the Spring game.

  123. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Tyler is at 1-2

Strikes out. Left runner on 2nd.

    OK!

    Hi Brew!

  124. homey ®:

  125. Darren:

Oh well...so much for having *faith*. I'll go tell Coach Cal to delete the Te'o family phone number from his cell phone...

  126. brew808:

homey - my error! You continue to be the mystery man to me and many others (although I think caught a glimpse of somebody in the pre-edited Genji video). BTW - did you get the name and phone number of that big screen TV? Ha! :D

Oh- and I'm big time jealous of your custom chop sticks!

    :o Go Wahine!!! :o

  127. LizKauai [Believer]:

    woops-
    ok.
    MeiLing is in da house!

  128. James:

    A-joe...I don't know...I've heard Stretch bites....but that's a different story...mwahahahahahaha

  129. LizKauai [Believer]:

Had to switch kkea streams for some reason...

  130. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Robinson flies out.

  131. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Warwick is up.
    Foul.
    Another Foul
    0-2

  132. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Ground ball to the pitcher.
    2 outs

  133. LizKauai [Believer]:

    Manuma is up.

    2-2

  134. XxFaithxX:

    My bad, Darren.

    Its just one mans opinion.

And yes, I have Faith in the Football team, but not in Manti staying home to play for UH.

  135. False Pordagee:

  277. koakane™:

eh gigi can represent us since you live near Radford. Vball Pahoa vs Hawaii Baptist 7:30pm

  278. FloridaTed:

    Bulla,

I hear you and understand where you're coming from. I just feel that there will be time enough for realism if we loose a few games, until then, I like to dream, like last year. Did we really think, at the beginning of the season, we would go undefeated and go to the SB?

I'm not sure where this feeling originates, but I have this strange and quiet confidence in this team. Overall we're definately more talented than last year, some positions even considerably better and this team has a chip on their collective shoulders, post Colt and dreadheads syndrome. Talent wise, our receivers are as good as last year, with time and meshing, maybe even better. The big question is QB and receiver synergy, but they have all summer and fall to get in sync. We have two stud QB's coming in, Tyler and Inoke really have to raise their game, if they want to hold on to their jobs. I wouldn't be very shocked if one of the JC QB's takes it.

Tyler and Inoke have the inside track, but Greg Alexander is a stud, watch out boys. Brent Rausch is just as good, but lucky for us, only a soph. If Greg wins the job, we can red shirt Brent, then have him back up and bulk up for one more year, then start for two. In the mean time, we have the luxury of going for HS QB's only.

Anyways, our cupboards are far from bare, actually we're well stocked. This year our defense might win a few games for us, just like last year, when our offense pulled out a few games from the fire.

May the chips fall where the may, I'm very confident.

  279. Bulla:

    koakane,

it would almost be an honor to wear purple; as i say every night when my 10 year old is visiting us....barney forever.....

    i love you
    you love me
    we love all
    our family.......

now i will have to change my mantra from 'i graduated a warrior but will die a crusader', to 'i graduated a warrior, will die a crusader, but lived as a monarch'...haha

oh my, the excitement is building...

  280. koakane™:

  288. gigi-hawaii ©:

    al, the usual 7.

Not much to talk about tonight.

Somebody said the reason I get cold is that I lack iron. So guess what! We are going to dine on Filet Diane at Morton's next week. Getting a free gift card from hubby's boss.

I really love mushrooms on my steak!

  289. Stephen Tsai:

Yes, thanks to Liz for excellent play-by-play.
I was trying to listen on my TV (digital has a 1420 channel) but it seemed like the MSU announcer had difficulty keeping up. But Liz's reports had the right amount of drama.

  290. gigi-hawaii ©:

I don't think I am getting enough iron from my nutrisystem diet. So we have to supplement with dinners out, don't we?

  291. gigi-hawaii ©:

The main thing is na wahine won. yay!

  292. hawnflyer:

Kazz, glad to see you like the UA Polo shirt. How do you like the black color, I know even when you start to sweat in them they dry out pretty quick.

  293. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Ted,
I'm with you on that post #278! Believe!

  294. al:

take zinc tablets. very good for you.

get rid of the muumuu. you need something that is closer to the body, like under armour.

  295. brew808:

:D Congratulations on Win #1 to Na Wahine!!! :D

Here's a video of bulla's main competition for Weber State mascot:

  296. Nurse Ratchett (EMT):

Al - Would Superman ever get rid of his red bibidees? Gigi has her trade mark to up hold.

  297. gigi-hawaii ©:

    Centrum contains zinc.

If Under Armour muus cost more than $60, I am not buying it.

Insane how much clothes cost these days.

  298. brew808:

We should also send our Aloha & Mahalos to Mei_Ling for actually attending the Wahine softball game in Tempe, cheering on our gals in person, and providing the text-messaging link to Liz! :)

  299. gigi-hawaii ©:

yay to Mei Ling and to Liz! Way to go!

  300. LizKauai:

MAHALO to MeiLing- who braved the highways and freeways and rush hour traffic from the snow-covered heights of Flagstaff to the sweltering heat of Tempe to bring the most important news to us all:
:!: "MeiLing says- We gonna win- da girls keep coming back!" :!:

  301. Bulla:

    300

  302. brew808:

Comment regarding muu muus - Wasn't that the clothing attire worn by the Washington Redskins fans? Only need the nose prop....

  303. Bulla:

beated by da kauai goddess....thilly wabbit... :):):)

  304. gigi-hawaii ©:

and other favorites from the south pacific.....he'll be telling us more soon.

  306. gigi-hawaii ©:

is it still humid outside? I am freezing with the a/c on and want to turn it off. Hubby is at costco right now. I'll wait til he gets home and he can decide.

  307. al:

    what wabbit siting?

    wow. weally?

  308. Bulla:

nose prop = thing that holds propellar in open position before contact

  309. brew808:

The "hogs" - the "hog/pig" nose piece, muu muu's and floppy hats..... just a recollection gigi! :D

  310. gigi-hawaii ©:

brew has food on da brain!

  311. Bulla:

nose prop = homey's half chopstick when he's 'diggin' for gold

  312. HiFlyer:

    gIgi, a fake nose

  313. brew808:

bulla - Did you check out that video link I posted?

  314. gigi-hawaii ©:

yay for muumuus and floppy hats! but ditch the hog nose piece!

  315. Kekoa:

    Yeah Al ~

How would we know it was Gigi without her muu muu? To upset the order of the universe is not Pono. Like fish outta water. Like a day without sunshine. Like...well, you get the picture.

  316. brew808:

Can someone explain why UH Baseball is playing Utah Valley State - especially this late in the season? :?

  317. gigi-hawaii ©:

the thing about muumuus is that you can dress it up or down according to the accessories you wear.

  318. al:

okay kekoa out of respect for you....i shall mmmmppfffft.

    cya later.

  319. gigi-hawaii ©:

I decided not to wear jogging shoes when I drive or putt on Sunday. Really don't need em. Will wear sandals instead.

  320. brew808:

How many muu muu's in a "load" of laundry?
Do you have to separate colors... or does it matter?
Do muu muu's ever have to be ironed, or even dry-cleaned?
Am I in trouble for asking these and other questions?

  321. gigi-hawaii ©:

    Brew-

    about 6 per load

    no need separate by color

    never iron poly/cotton blends

    no need dry clean

  322. scottkob10:

rivals.com has te'o ranked the #7th best high school senior in the nation

  323. gigi-hawaii ©:

ironing is the most boring chore of all. That's why hubby wears poly/cotton aloha shirts.

  324. gigi-hawaii ©:

I have been reading about Favre and Sorenstam retiring this year while still in their 30s. They say they are physically able to continue, but mentally they are very tired of the daily grind.

Well here I am, a writer who has no intention of ever retiring. As long as I don't have Alzheimer's, I'll continue to write and publish books and articles.

  325. brew808:

Hey Liz - Did Mei_Ling say whether she was planning to attend tomorrow's UH Wahine softball game? I recall he saying it was a 2hr drive - not counting traffic.

In regards to Te'o - doesn't matter "how many stars" a player is rated as having - especially if he is rated #7, or even top #100 high school seniors in the nation! UH has to at least show him, and other top notch local athletes, that they are welcome, wanted at UH! IMHO...

  326. LizKauai:

brew808- MeiLing is going to the Diamondbacks game and then heading back into the mountains. She will not be watching the game tomorrow.

    Willie Grace again...

  327. brew808:

    gigi -

Justine Henin, the top ranked Women's Tennis player, age 25, also announced her retirement this past Wed.

  328. Kekoa:

    Gigi ~

If you do decide to go across the street to the Radford gym to support the small town Pahoa powerhouse team tonite...check out the name on the
Memorial plaque, on the outside of the main doors to the gym. As Jim Nabors used to say, "Gaaawwwllee...Sur-prise, Sur-prise!"

  329. gigi-hawaii ©:

yeah I read about Henin. How much you wanna bet that she makes a comeback later when she runs outta money?

Kekoa, what name? Mine? haha da only one that matters!

  330. brew808:

    Hmmmmm...
Diamondbacks? Wahine Softball!!! Diamondbacks? Wahine Softball!!! Diamondbacks? Wahine Softball!!!

  331. gigi-hawaii ©:

doc gave me an antibiotic for my cough, but I guess it's viral because I am still coughing. This vog is not helping matters.

  332. wafan:

    Kekoa . . .

Okay, I give up. My eye sight is poor and I cannot read the name on the plaque.

  333. gigi-hawaii ©:

kekoa, Admiral Radford's name on the plaque?

  334. A-House:

    Brew:

Utah Valley State was supposed to be a "tune-up" for the Bows before the conference tournament.

re your #325 post - I agree that Hawaii must recruit all the best in Hawaii until the athlete signs that LOI - just seeing the Hawaii LOI on the table may make that difference.

Coach Mack and Cal Lee must make a huge effort to sign Te'o - don't back off just because USC, Notre Dame, etc. comes calling.

If Coach Nash can do it, so can Coach Mack!!!!

  335. A-House:

mu computer clock shows 7:08, but my post says 7:20pm - what the hey?????????

  336. wafan:

    A-Sports . . .

In response to your note a bunch of days back. i do remember you at Chinn's. In fact, you are the one who took the photo of Mrs. Bulla and me. I hope everything is going well at the addunno house. Maybe this August?

  337. duffer:

    Hey ST,

has the exchange between you and al taken place yet. I would hate for some "hostess" to be staying at you know where! :-)

  338. brew808:

    A-Sports is a sweetheart .... :D

  339. Kekoa:

    Gigi ~

My grandson announced his retirement at age 12 from baseball after his final Little League All Star game. He is now 21 years old, and has never picked up his glove or bat since. (He even retired from football after a stellar HS career).

His reason for retirement from 2 prominent sports?...he felt that once he experienced the thrill of hitting that 1st home run, none of the others felt as good. Once he pitched a no-hitter, the next one felt like it was "routine." Once he made a sparkling, NFL league-like offensive or defensive play, the thrill was gone!

My wish?...he waited until he reached the Pros in either of those sports, then retire his grandparents in true luxury in appreciation for all their support! Hehehe...

  340. al:

    no worry kekoa.
    like the song.
"one in a million" maybe more, thats how many 12 year olds reach the major leagues.
    at least he is happy.

  341. gigi-hawaii ©:

Kekoa, well let's hope he doesn't feel that way about his WIFE -- if he's married...

Funny I don't feel that way about writing. Every story or chapter I write is different. Writing keeps my mind occupied and riveted, and I always feel happy with the creative process.

  342. al:

isn't there a rule even at the driving range regarding footwear?
besides, you need to practice in what you will play with. otherwise, you will have a rude experience when you finally feel confident enough to step on to the courses.

ah, but what do i know.

  343. Kekoa:

...and no, it's not his name on the Plaque...too long, no can fit, have to build bigger gym.

"Nakanielakimanaokekaulahanakeawe" I ran the name together to save space, might break the blog!

  344. al:

    duffer,
    he knows i have it.
barring a fire at my house i don't think i'll misplace those things.
besides, i am a golden nugget kind of guy.

  345. gigi-hawaii ©:

Kekoa, what's his claim to fame???

  346. gigi-hawaii ©:

good point, Al, so I'll wear the jogging shoes...

  347. duffer:

    al,

golf attire is required at most courses, except the city/country ones.

Golden Nugget????? I thought you were a strip type of guy.....:-)

  348. Esme:

*shuffle- shuffle- shuffle-off-to-Buffalo, flap-ball-change ...* (yes, those are actual tap steps)

    I'm here! Aaaaand ...

*whoosh! goes that #^$#@ cane!* ...

    Gone. :(

Really wish I could linger. I really hope you all have a great evening! :D

  349. Esme:

P.S. Kazz, thanks for the laffs with those Kate Robinson "headlines"!

  350. duffer:

A few tips on practicing. ALWAYS aim for something! Spend twice the time putting/chipping than hitting the driver. Practice with a purpose!

  351. duffer:

    Hey Esme,

Maybe you and Jenn would like to take me and al on in golfing? :-)

  352. Addahknowsports:

    Hi Gang,

Just peeking in before I head out. It seems my timing is a little better than last.

    Wafan-

Was good talking to you at Chinn's. Hope we get to see you when you come in to town. We'll be gone in early August to the Bay Area, but will be back hopefully before you leave again.

On a side note (well this is the football part of it) I hope the football clinic for women doesn't clash with my trip. I believe August was mentioned. I'm crossing my fingers....

    And Brew-

    Right back atcha! :) :) :)
I'd stay and flirt but gotta head out. Gotta meet up with my Joe. And speaking of...about a month ago he gave me this really really big hug. I told him, "Wow! You act like you never see me in seven months. What was that for?" He said, "No reason". How's that for a great guy or what.

Anyway, I'll peep in a little later when I hit my destination.

  353. gigi-hawaii ©:

duffer, nobody said anything when I drove and putted at the Navy-Marine course. I wore a muu, hat, and jogging shoes.

  354. gigi-hawaii ©:

    OK, sports, take care!

  355. duffer:

When you finally get to play on a course other than a city/county course. They are very strict on the dress codes.

  356. gigi-hawaii ©:

duffer, what I gotta wear den?

    and hubby, too?

  357. Kekoa:

Al - Yes you are correct. Most courses, and their adjoining driving ranges, require athletic footwear. My mom wore her novelty custom made "golf spike slippahs" when she was caught out on the course during a heavy rain. She would come slogging in to the clubhouse "looking" like she completed the course - and we were wimps for bailing out because of a little wet weather.

  358. gigi-hawaii ©:

I guess I'll be playing on city courses only, then.

  359. Ralph:

    La Tech 1-0 over Auburn
    Nevada Reno 4-1 over Purdue
Fresno State 11-0 over Sac State

    Go Wac softball

  360. Ralph:

    UH softball recruits:
    Sarah Robinson Moanalua
    Dara Pagaduan Kamehameha

  361. bighilofan2:

    Howzit Tsaikos.

The NCAA knew enough to put 4 WAC teams in da dance, huh? 4-0 so far. Just super duper I tell yah!

Manti Te'o? He's got natural talent, for sure. He's got family in Utah; I can see the lure there. His psyche is probably vibing him to leave - at least thats the opinion of some who shared a little time with him at UH a couple of months ago - when UH had some of the locals come visit the campus, the coaches and the facilities.

But if you don't make the effort to let him know he would be a welcome member of the team, he'll never make his own decision to leave or stay - he'll get "pushed/vibed" into the decision. If he's that good, I'm sure that the other great players out of Hawaii, who have committed to UH, would want the team to offer him a chance to play with them and to attend UH. The bottom line: Coaches Mack and Cal, you gotta make the sincere effort, even if he says no.

btw, great practice today in Keaau.

  362. NYUH:

    bighilofan2:

I agree. Every kid in Hawaii grows up dreaming of playing for UH, not Tennessee, not even UCLA (SC maybe) You got to tap that dream and as you said make them feel they are welcome.

  363. koakane™:

WAC wsball 4-0 congrats to dem especially our own wahines.

anybody got scoops on Pahoa and Hawaii Baptist vball game?

UH bball dong ok but as soon as they change to relief pitchers things fall apart. UV now closing on the UH lead. common UH stop da bleeding. yeaaaaaaaaaaaaa third out.

  364. Ralph:

    pahoa lost

  365. Hoohiki:

Just tuned in to see if any drama was brewing tonight....so I ended up reading most of the posts. I forgot the wahine sb team was playing today (some UH fan I am) and I have to hand it to you, LizK, your play by play put me right on the stands in Arizona, at the edge of my seat even, while reading your posts. Forget Robert Demello or Kekaula your my pick for the color analyst.

When is the next game and who are they playing? Geev 'um Girls!!!

  366. bighilofan2:

i know Keaau players doing plenty "homework" this weekend. I wonder if Warriors doing homework too? must be, huh? gotta step it up, guys! NO REST FO DA BEST!

    GO WARRIORS!!!!

  367. las vegas:

lv saunters in the room looking for fuud

  368. las vegas:

  369. las vegas:

  370. LizKauai:

Hoohiki- Wahine play Arizona State at 11AM tomorrow. Woo Hoo!

  371. LizKauai:

  393. Jason:

Ugh, I wish I had noticed about Kapi‘olani Blvd being closed from Ke‘eaumoku to Kāheka. It took me 75 minutes on TheBus to get from King/Punchbowl past Ala Moana. I finally got to the baseball game three hours after I left the house, when I should have made it after 90 minutes. (That included a break for dinner.)

You'd figure that the HA would make that story PROMINENT in its breaking news, figuring how busy an intersection Kapi‘olani and Ke‘eaumoku is. All the eastbound traffic on Kapi‘olani had to be routed into Ala Moana; you think how much traffic feeds into there from Ke‘eaumoku already. It was absolutely awful, there was no contraflow lane set up, no police manning traffic lights, nothing.

Thanks again to chawan_cut for a ride home from the baseball game. I had enough bus riding for one day, so that was greatly appreciated. Someone send him something for his allergies, Benadryl or whatevers.

  394. MeiLing:

Fun in the sun! The UH softball game was terrific. I think there were 25-30 Hawaii people there. An ASU fan was sitting next to coach Coolen's son who hung a banner in the section above where I sat. She said she had a lot of fun hanging with the UH fans & the coach's son. Better have fun today before they might have to play UH (which they are.) I heard that there were 50 people on the UH list for passes. Lucky there were seats above our dugout. The ASU ticket people sold me a ticket above the wrong dugout. A Miss. St. mom said they had about 15 people there, mainly parents.
D-Backs won too; beat Detroit 4-5. Eric Byrnes is out of his slump with a homer! Fireworks after the game. Oakland's been doing that for years. Great draw for families.
Couldn't stay for the game tomorrow. Too much to do at home to get ready to move.

ST ~ I'm gonna email you pictures from the game. Don't know how well they turned out. Use 'em if you can. Pics of players are thru the netting. Pics of fans around me.

  395. las vegas:

    Addahknowsports,

there are so many thoughts and ideas that i wish to share with the world.
i carefully type them out and categorize by subject.
