Manti Te‘o sweepstakes underway
May 16th, 2008 by Stephen TsaiForget skyrocketing gas prices and air fares.
The number of visiting football coaches is on the rise.
The 2009 recruiting class — this year’s high school juniors — is considered to be one of the best in a long time.
The valedictorian is Punahou outisde linebacker Manti Te‘o, who reportedly has received interest from 30 colleges. Norm Chow, now with UCLA, has been leading the way.
By a quirky NCAA rule, only college assistant coaches — not head coaches — are allowed to have direct contact with prospects during this period. By the way, Teo’s first cousin is UH recruit Paipai Falemalu.

I hope all of you have enjoyed Wes Nakama’s excellent reports on Sarah Robinson. It’s a preview for next year, when Robinson succeeds sister Kate on the Rainbow Wahine roster.

May 16th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Are the Hawaii coaches beginning to offer any high school players? I’m hoping we don’t get on players to late while everyone else is in constant contact with the recruits.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
We’ll have a special prize for Bonar when he is indeed “first.”
May 16th, 2008 at 12:27 pm

May 16th, 2008 at 12:27 pm

May 16th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
give up what eva numba I stay
May 16th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Ryan:
They’ve offered quite a few.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
In the past, I might have thought, “No way we get a recruit like Te‘o, especially a defensive player.” Not now, not under Mack. “Recruiting is the lifeblood…”
May 16th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
That number “10″ isn’t quite accurate. C’mon, now I know some of my peeps have been creepin’ when I wasn’t looking.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
don’t you all just like the way stsai just teases you?
May 16th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
shouting out to A house, Midori7 (small A house), dpk, al (again), jason and tsaiman
eating school lunch again me thinks its boiled or baked chicken with mash potato covered in some kind of butter/oil mix.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
Jason:
UH has been successful in landing local talent in the past. Chang, Rivers, etc. were big recruits.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
there’s also a number mainland polynesians that have been offered.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
I am anxious to see how the “new” recruiting sytem at UH does. They seemd a lil complacent in the last coaching regime. Not so with the new bunch. This is why I say a good season is gonna be a big factor in recruiting come January. It would be awesome to get Manti.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
Any relation to Shilo Te’o, Kahuku’s all state safety?
May 16th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
So I just realized today I’m teaching a hybrid class this summer. I guess that means half face-to-face lecture, half outside linebacker.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Offensive guys from St. Louis, yeah.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
I believe so.
UH could have had the Kahuku safety except it isn’t recruiting safeties anymore.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
wondering out loud…..
when jj was here, he would tell the polynesian kids to come play for hawaii, polynesia’s team.
so, now what does he say when recruiting a polynesian to smu? come away see the united states. huh?
May 16th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Fale Laeli, Timo Paepule, Rocky Savaiigaea …
May 16th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
have the coaches had a chance to offer any mainland recruits yet or are they still scouting?
May 16th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
shiloah and manti are cousins.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
some have allegedly been offered.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Is the Wahine Softball game on the ‘tube today? It’s only listed as being on the radio…
May 16th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
st
i am wondering if that st. louis grad is coming to visit family or the brothers lee? he is not on an athletic commitment so still can transfer to the home team.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
This should not be on “Warrior Beat” because UH aint got no shot at landing Manti.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
We can dream can’t we?
May 16th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
Sarah Robinson pitched a fabulous game last night. Unfortunately, the Moanalua 2B was unable to come up with a ground ball with two outs in extra innings and the winning run scored to break a 0-0 deadlock. My heart just ached for the 2B. Hate to see the winning run scored in that fashion.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
good luck to maiava going to ucla; also with norm chow at ucla is vai tata from ucla/st louis crusader. he will be working with the special teams and helping with the d-line eventually.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
te’o will do well wherever he chooses to go; bottom line, get your degree
May 16th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
duster,
waiakea team looked like a good hitting team. 5 sacred heart errors did not help their cause. mililani looks solid also…exciting watching hs girls softball, lots of energy and passion on the field.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
koakane,
how many school lunches did you eat…no worry nobody counting, but knowing you, i think that 3 would be a good number……j/k
May 16th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Nothing against Fale, Timo, and Rocky, but they weren’t five stars. (And yes, I know that stars don’t mean anything. I’m talking about a prestige thing.)
May 16th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
is this the ‘bulla hour’, haha. had some time to check in on everyone….and don’t forget the state track meet at mililani this weekend starting today.
lovely vog, driving from kapolei to town, couldn’t see past aiea, thought david copperfield was in town and made honolulu vanish……wow.
May 16th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
jason,
hmmmm, rating by stars…..that is a whole different discussion. 5 stars…..it’s all perception, and coaches who select players based solely on a rating service shouldn’t be a coach…..a lot of it is hype, who gets seen, who is pushing whose buttons. very interesting as the season develops over the next 9 months.
May 16th, 2008 at 1:01 pm
You guys know what I mean, though. Those hyped up 5 star players, before time, it was always a distant dream, a “what if” that could come true if the player wanted to stay home, but it still seemed so far off until the LOI was signed. But now, it feels like UH is always in the running from the start, that the want to stay home isn’t the only thing keeping the player here.
May 16th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
i don’t mean to rain on anyone’s parade, but the odds of retaining Te’o will be somewhere between slim and none. do a reality check….there is so much more to offer from the other side of the blue Pacific. some people say UH will have a great season and go 11-2; i say at 8-5 Coach Mack should be happy. JJ left for a reason, or maybe a few million reasons, but it was the most opportune time for him to leave. it comes down to dollars and sense, the writing was on the wall.
coach mack will do a great job, his pay was increased ten fold….that should have some bearing on his committment to keep the momentum rolling from last year. he is a good coach, but he cannot produce miracles. our offense is challenged right now, and it will be a key point in their success for this season.
IMUA WARRIORS…..and i hope they have a GREAT SEASON!
May 16th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
At least UH can tell Manti that 2 of the 3 LB positions will be up for grabs next year. Even though UH’s chances are very slim, it won’t hurt to offer & get denied.
May 16th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
MeiLing is on her way to the stadium- a traffic accident has the freeway all backed up but she is making progress.
May 16th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Bulla,
I’m just a little bit surprised at your small kind lack of faith. I’m sticking to my feeling that the Warriors will shock a lot of people on the Mainland. JJ’s teams were very emotional, which is good, but makes it harder to sustain consistent , high level play. I like Coach Mack’s disciplined and cold fury approach, mixed with total preparedness of his players.
Playing with total preparedness, cold fury and second nature technique, a high level of play, barring serious injuries, can be sustained throughout the season. You add to that Coach Macks proven ability to make in game adjustments and you will know that the Warriors will not beat themselves this year.
I say it again, the Warriors will shock a lot of people.
As DPK mentioned above, I would not rule out Manti Te’o just yet, as he said and I agree, the success of this season will play a huge part with about half of our top recruits for 09.
May 16th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
I want Manti!
I want Manti!
I want Manti!
How’s that Midori? Actually, the Manti story has been developing for two years already as he made a huge splash as a sophomore. From what I’ve read, it was the family’s dream to have the two cousins (Manti and Shiloah) play together at BYU. Shiloah committed to BYU early after a visit from Coach Mendenhall and it kind of seemed that it was game over for Shiloah and probably Manti, too.
Interestingly, though, when Mack got aboard and reached out to our North Shore brothers, there were unofficial rumblings that Shiloah might have been reconsidering staying home. Shiloah was a safety thus ST’s post about UH backing off on safetys is interesting because he seems to be suggesting that UH could have landed Shiloah if they had stayed on him. I vaguely remember Shiloah saying something about how he was interested in UH after taking his official visit but that it was “too late” because UH didn’t have a scholie available. If I have any of that wrong, I apologize to Shiloah and the whole Te’o family and anybody else that might have been offended.
Anyway, as for Manti, he is clearly the jewel of the 2009 class and I would LOVE to have him play for the Warriors next year. But, aside from BYU, he’s been getting early offers from USC, Notre Dame, pretty much EVERYBODY. HIs dad and uncle post regularly on the SportsHawaii board and have repeatedly said that Manti has not committed anywhere yet and could just as well end up at Hawaii as anywhere else. No reason for them to lie, so I gotta believe Hawaii has a legitimate chance. Why not? It’s playing at HOME in front of all your friends and family.
May 16th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Bulla: I’m glad that OC-16 televises State tournament games for so many sports. Mililani looks tough. 20 runs in one game is unreal at States. The teams in the semis all have solid pitching, so the winner just may be the team that commits the least errors. Great stuff!
BTW, besides Sarah Robinson, is there anyone else in the State tournament who will be playing softball for UH?
May 16th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Mojo - Please make room for me on the Manti bandwagon.
May 16th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
LizK,
See my comments #490 & 491 on the last blog about your Pensacola -Gainesville trip.
May 16th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
As they say, “the worst that could happen is he says ‘no’”.
MANTI, GET CHANCE?
May 16th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Kids with definite NFL potential should stay at UH. Got plenty of time to explore the vast wasteland of the mainland - and more bucks to enjoy it. UH is a good school and you can’t replace the experience of playing in front of Hawaii — Colt knew that.
May 16th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Man it’s hot out there!
I just passed a parade and it was raining on it.
Don’t know who else will be playing for the Wahine softball team from the State tournament but even though she is only a Sophomore they better hurry up and offer Courtney Senas from Mililani.
May 16th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Duster, always got room for you, my brother. You know that. We just gotta hope Mack and Cal can work their magic. I mean Manti can basically write his own ticket anywhere he wants. Let’s hope he chooses to stay home in beautiful Hawaii.
By the way I believe that Manti was named after a city in Utah that has a famous LDS temple. His name is NOT pronounced “man-tee.” I believe the correct pronunciation of his name is supposed to be “man-tie”.
Again, if I have any of this wrong, please accept my apologies and do me the favor of correcting my ignorance.
May 16th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
yah, homey i was impressed with her too. comes from a long line of athletic siblings. she got decent size too.
May 16th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
yup. keep the faith, keep praying i say.
miracles do happen.
can you say falemalu and tachibana?
May 16th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
If a kid wants to go away and play elsewhere, more power to him or her. The main thing, like Bulla mentioned, is get the degree.
Also, there are many players from Hawaii that have Pro potential but UH cannot offer all of them schollies. They look what’s out there and make their choices. Power to them too! Main thing, they get their degree and be a positive influence in the community. What more could anybody ask for?
May 16th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Why Canti be Manti??
Shoots…chance ‘um coach Mack…try axe!
May 16th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
WarriorMojo,
You are correct in that Shiloah wanted to be a Warrior but they only could offer a Grayshirt, so he went to BYU offered a full ride early on in the recruiting season.
FYI on the Te’o.
Malosi (Kahuku ‘06, UNLV RB - currently on a mission), Shiloah (Kahuku ‘08 Safety), and Manti (Punahou ‘09 LB), Levi (’09 Timpview High in Utah)
are all first cousins
Manti’s mom is the sister of former Rainbow Warriors Louis, Lane, and Walter Santiago
Their second cousin is Kapena Drummer Eddie Te’o
May 16th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
al - Too bad UH couldn’t get the girl Smith from Kapolei. I remember her playing against my son in Pony league and she was the Pitcher, 1st baseman, and 3rd batter. Lefty too!
May 16th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Anyone keeping tabs on the Wahine on 1420AM?

Nesbitt is up - walks
May 16th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
WMojo:
I’m with you on your #55 post - Coaching staff will do their very best to secure commitments from as many Hawaii athletes it can now and in the future be they high or low profile.
There are many advantages and disadvantages to staying or going away to play. Nothing wrong in laying it all on the line so student and parents can understand - that’s where Coach Mack is so different than JJ. Coach Mack is so “likeable( warm and friendly)” and “trusting” a person.
Every evening I watch the ABC national news with Charles Gibson and I tell Mrs A-House I really like him because he comes across as someone down to earth and you can really trust; just like Walter Cronkite(sp?) Anybody remember his series, “Your Were There”?
Wonder what Jdawg would say if Manti Te’o accepts a Warrior scholarship?
May 16th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Nice that the MSU network is doing the game for us, but this guy is putting me to sleep.

BigWave - Did you do a thesis on the Te’o family?
May 16th, 2008 at 2:30 pm

Right on FloridaTed, we will romp in da swamp!~~~~~~
May 16th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Mojo – I want Manti! I want Manti! Hey…gotta at least try. Otherwise we’ll be like the previous regime…”ah, no mo chance…no need call”. He’s a rare national level top caliber player to come out of these islands. Has there ever been another 5-star recruit produced out of Hawaii high schools?
I know the stars are just a prestige thing like Jason said, but it’d show that we’ve arrived at the party if we can start landing some big names away from the *name* schools. BTW, Paipai receiving offers from 3 Pac-10 schools means that he was more than a 2-star recruit. Had he chose Cal, he would have suddenly been a 3 or 4 star recruit…poof…just like that.
May 16th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Top of the 4th.
Got to heat up our bats!

Grimes is up.
May 16th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
Te’o ain’t staying in Hawai`i
Punahou + highly regarded player = mainland college.
Sure there are exceptions…but I’d say its a done deal….look at the amount of offers? That tells you that all those mainland colleges know the same thing. They can cherry pick almost every private school star athlete without much resistance from UH.
Until the Plantation mentality changes, it will always be the same. If UHM and the state actually spend money to bring the campus, teachers, and staff up to par for UH…not stay status quo, expect the brain drain as well as the athlete drain…
May 16th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Grimes grounds to 1st., Titcomb moves to 3rd.
2 outs
Noka (?) is up.
May 16th, 2008 at 2:45 pm

May 16th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
homey - my error! You continue to be the mystery man to me and many others (although I think caught a glimpse of somebody in the pre-edited Genji video). BTW - did you get the name and phone number of that big screen TV? Ha!
Oh- and I’m big time jealous of your custom chop sticks!
