Hawthorne gets tryout with Bills

May 17th, 2008 by Stephen Tsai

Wideout C.J. Hawthorne has earned a private workout with the Buffalo Bills.
Hawthorne said the audition is scheduled for Wednesday. He said he leaves Tuesday.
Hawthorne competed in the Atlanta Falcons' rookie camp, but was not retained.
"We'll see how this goes," Hawthorne said.

One of our loyal readers, Jason, is 21 today.
Besides being brilliant, Jason is generous — with his time and money. He was one of the top organizers for the Relay for Life. He also is a youth leader in his church. And he's provided useful information and commentary on this blog.
Most of all, he is our friend.
As the Wizard of Oz said to the tin woodsman: : "A heart is not judged by how much you love; but by how much you are loved by others."
Jason has a great heart.

If everything goes according to plan, the football coaches will receive laptop computers.
That will be key, especially on road trips. It will allow coaches to review football videos on airplanes and in hotel rooms.
Greg McMackin has been a long-time supporter of computer-assisted coaching. Paul Allen was the owner during McMackin's final year with the Seattle Seahawks. McMackin relied on computer programs at Texas Tech. He keeps his entire playbook in a memory stick.
In the 1990s McMackin and the other Seattle coaches invested in a little company that Paul Allen owns. Something called Microsoft.

It seemed like only a few years ago when the office talk centered on baby formula, Chuck E. Cheese, Discovery Zone, and the where's-my-shotgun glares we would give to our daughters' future boyfriends.
In the next several weeks Candace Murayama, Crystal Kimura and Allie Tsai will be college graduates. Candace's graduation is today in Oregon. Congrats to them. And special thanks to the mothers who did all of the work in raising them and providing guidance — Donna, Janice and Wena.

  7. Stephen Tsai:

I think addahknowsports has replaced addahknowjoe as a reader. is this a Bill/Hillary thing?

  8. Addahknowsports:

dragged over from old blog. For those who saw this already, forgive me.

    Good Morning Tsaikos and Tsaikettes!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY JASON!

I’d sing you a birthday duet, but the Harmonizer is sleeping his best. He apparently got home when the birds started singing their best. (the IIRR IIRR IIIRRRRR etc is Joe-speak for crowing rooster)

Looking forward to your progressive birthday celebration tonight wherever that may be. I’m coming along to chaperone (not you, the tsaikos) to make sure they don’t lead you into doing “a Homey”.

  9. duffer:

    Morning ST

    Morning TSAI-KOS

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY JASON

in case you missed it on the previous blog!

blogging from work again! Something is DEFINITELY wrong here!

  10. Addahknowsports:

Good Morning ST! ...and veddy funny Mistah Blog Host. Bill sends his best regards...

  11. Addahknowsports:

    Beautiful words about Jason!

  12. wafan:

And that is why Mr. Tsai is a writer.

  13. Stephen Tsai:

If anybody is bored (or homeless and needs to get out of the sun), I'll be at that book and music festival tomorrow hawking our book. it's been marked down to $10. I was gonna wait for it to get below a movie ticket, but ... oh, wait, I'm supposed to be hawking. Buy the book!

  14. gigi-hawaii ©:

Wouldn't it be just great if we crashed Jason's B-day party?

21... remember when you were that age? I was a junior-senior at UH, having fun with the guys! And flunking 3rd year French.

  15. Stephen Tsai:

Mr. Tsai is my brother, Mike, the real writer.
    I'm just a book salesman.

  16. Addahknowsports:

Hi Wafan. Top 'o the morning to you!

  17. gigi-hawaii ©:

hey, ST, I paid MORE THAN $10 for that book. So how come so cheap?

  18. brew808:

    ... Stephen Hawking... :D

  19. koakane™:

wow not even in da top 15 boooooooooooo

  20. Addahknowsports:

Sorry, which book and where is this at?

  21. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

No madda what time o'day tis, I somehow manage to be one of the last post-ers in the previous blog. Today I are one o' de foistess.. Whoopee.

    Again, Happy Birthday Jason.

Stephen: Think time has gone by fast now? Just see how quickly it flies before you're watching your son graduate from college. How old is he, BTW.

Lots of great sports stuff today. Will be at the Book & Music Festival before heading back to the campus for baseball's Senior Night. GO BOWS!!

  22. brew808:

    ..."Addahknow...books" :D

  23. gigi-hawaii ©:

I attended the FIRST book festival a couple of years ago and got lost in the parking structure. What a nightmare! I couldn't locate my car. Hubby was super mad when I told him to come from work and help me find my car. Finally, a security guard found it for us.

Ever since, I have avoided the festival.

  24. djmitcho:

    wafan,
the eastside is gonna be up to about 90 today. As much as I would like to be outside near a lake, I'm working til 3ish, and then headed to the af2 game at the arena, so I'll stay cool for the most part. I actually put in my a/c in last nite as my apt was kinda warm.

  25. Addahknowsports:

    Brew-

    Huh?

  26. brew808:

    ..."Addahknow...huh?" :D

  27. Stephen Tsai:

    I got married at 21.
Here's a link to things related to the number 21:

  28. gigi-hawaii ©:

Sports, the book festival will be held today and tomorrow on the grounds of Honolulu Hale.

  29. wafan:

    Hey, A-Sports!

How is everything with you and A-Joe? What is on the schedule for today?

Trying to decide what to have for lunch. Maybe head out to Norma's for a great burger. Or maybe just make a grilled ham and cheese sandwich.

    Decisions. Decisions.

  30. koakane™:

moved this over in response to addahknowports accusing us of doing improper stuff to Jason on his bday. not us tsaiko's ........ stretch and homey maybe

now addahknowsports how can you say that about us ;)

  31. A-House:

    Jason:

Amighty happy birthday to you from the A-House family - have a good and safe one!!!!!!!!!

  32. Stephen Tsai:

    Gigi:
Well, there's a little story called "I Told You So."
The guys in the sports department said, hey, if we're going to do a book, shouldn't we publish it before Christmas? Then we can amend it after the Sugar Bowl.
Then the guys in the department said, hey, why don't we sell the book at the Warrior Bowl, where all of the Warrior fans will be.
And the powers-that-be gave that same look they give when you say: why is the Web site so blue?

  33. Stephen Tsai:

If you attend, you may park at the Tizer building. Just say "Ferd" said it was OK.

  34. wafan:

    Koakane . . .

Ever been to Norma's out here? I know it was around waaaaaay back then while you were here at SMC (now SMU). Thinking of trying the John Wayne Burger -- has just about everything in it but fish and the kitchen sink.

Anyhow, now there are two of them. Yum!

  35. Stephen Tsai:

I think that right about now we need Kazz to write a birthday son for Jason.

  36. brew808:

    ...number 21 -

    blackjack!
    • minimum number of points scored by Warrior D!!! in the first three games of the 2008 season!
    • typical number of credits taken per semester by our birthday Tsaiko!
    • average number of questions posted by gigi per blog
    • typical length of time in seconds spent on the Warrior Beat! by our Tsaiko "nanay" Esme :D
    • ....

ST - Jason earlier mentioned (complained) about roadwork on Kapiolani near your home base. Will that be pau on Sunday? :?

  37. brew808:

... a birthday "son"? Hmmmmmmm....

  38. Addahknowsports:

Cute Brew. Anyway, how ya doin' Sweetie?

    Gigi-

Thanks for the info about the book festival. Jus' like I don't live here, yeah?

    ST-

    Interesting...

    Hi Wafan-

Everything's good. Gotta run some errands, then it will be an itty bitty numbers day. By the time I'm done, I will be ready to partaaaay. Maybe I will be the one to contribute to the delinquency of a new adult. hehehe.

Which leads me to Koakane's comment... See comment just above this one.

  39. Addahknowsports:

    Koakane-

sorry, I meant within my entire post.

  40. A-House:

ALL RIGHT!!! - another step in the right direction for the coaches to get "lap-tops - another indicator that UHAD is moving in the right direction under the guidance of Jim D.

someday, Mrs A-House will buy me one - still expensive - then we can blog from many different places - does this mean we must buy a "wireless one"? - nah, just joking as my commo training knows the answer.

Hope many football fans will continue to donate to the Warrior's as they ascend the levels to continued success - it will be difficult in these economic times, but $10 from 50,000 =s $500,000.

Good luck to the Wahine SB team in their quest to win the Arizona Regional!!!!

  41. Kekoa:

Howzit A-Joe...I had these great plans of starting from the "Bars of Waikiki Tour" and working my way around da island with Jason in tow to all the other famous watering holes. Den I remembered...he only drink WADA...lots & lots of...(gallons in fact)...maybe a 55 gallon drum size of H2O!

No worries tho! Emergency Plan B is being considered for members and honorary members of da West Side Tsaiko Chapter. We can put together a video of that historic tour and post it for him. It would be his visual-virtual Bertday Party of how much fun he might have had, if he could consume the goodly size tankards of ale we are sure to inhale.

Pssst!...Attention Tsaikettes...We might even include a peek of the behind the scenes videos of "Homey" the Tsaiko Calender Stud Muffin at play!

The bonus feature will include more crowd pleasing antics of our Purple clad mystery guest the amazing Sumo-Tsaiko hisself!

  42. Stephen Tsai:

I don't think they do roadwork on Sundays.
By the way, if anybody wants a tour of our work place, let me know. I only bring this up because we had visitors the other day. Oh, wait, you guys might want to wait a while. Leila is going to Disneyland this coming week.

  43. gigi-hawaii ©:

    Just so sports knows--

"THE PERFECT SEASON" by the Honolulu Advertiser staff, featuring writings by ST and lots of color photos of the Warriors.

For $10 you cannot go wrong.

    Buy this book!

I know I also speak for homey..... EEEEAAAAZZZZYYYY TIGER

Happy Birthday Jason.... Make sure you wear clean BVDs to the baseball game (just in case LV shows up with his camera for the Tsaiko Calendar)

  45. wafan:

    A-Sports . . .

You are making me blush! What were you planning to do/with/for Jason?

    Oh my.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  46. koakane™:

    wafan,

only place off campus we visited of was Casey Tavern. hot spot during my times there,

Wstate had 21 age restriction and needed to have a registered liquor license card to purchase or consume alcohol. I don't think its required any more. btw still have that card today.

  47. d1shima [sez:]:

    Great Morning All.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY JASON!

  48. Addahknowsports:

    Stretch-

    Bwahahahahaha. Where is Homey btw?

    Jason-

Follow Stretch's advice in #44. If you've read last night's post from Las Vegas about the Tsaiko calendar, you'd be very careful (and very afraid).

    Gigi-

Thanks for the info. I wanted to get that book...wow, ten buck$ too.

No worry A-House, I will be the responsible adult taking care of Jason tonight. Just make sure Midori is there to be the responsible adult to take care of both of us.

    Gosh.

So much activity on the blog the past couple of day; almost like in-season times. It took a while to catch up.

Well maybe Stephen can sharpen his sales skills w/ The Perfect Season so he'll be ready to hawk the calendar when it comes out.

  52. Addahknowsports:

    Wafan-

Oops...sorry for the misleading statement. I was talking about the booze, nothing else. Yikes. My apologies.

    Wowow.

  55. brew808:

    ...Addahknowsports...butIknowsabitabout...gutters!!!

  56. Stretch:

Jason - BTW, not sure if Papa Al ever told you, but when you turn 21, you have to stop wearing the Spiderman Under-roos. You will have to upgrade to whitey tighties or boxers. I would suggest boxers but make sure you have two chinstraps no matter what LV suggests.

  57. Addahknowsports:

    Stretch-

That's an awful lot of responsibility for Midori. No worry, sistah, I get your back.

  58. d1shima [sez:]:

Great news about the coaches getting laptops.
Bad news is, "What took so long?"

    A-house,
I think most every laptop sold now has the "wireless" thing. At least this one I'm using now does and it was really inexpensive when I got it at ChumpUSA. (Although if it craps out now, I screwed)

  59. brew808:

    Question for LizK -

Isn't Kate Robinson ... a university student? So... I didn't understand the comment about "writing" like a university student..." :?

  60. Addahknowsports:

    Brew!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!

  61. LizKauai:

Stretch- please be sure to pre-arrange the dd and be sure they have their Indy license!

    Speaking of license-
Ukuboi wakes up this morning (with a little urging) - an hour before the- er, FINAL ROAD TRIP with his driving teacher- and says... where's my wallet???

    arrgh!

Finally located in Eleele, we jump. unwashed, un-caffeinated into the car and make a dash to fetch it.
Pull into the school just in time.

This is not my idea of a sleep-in Saturday.

This vog is something else too... hack hack...

  62. Kekoa:

Good Morning A-Sports! Didn't mean to ignore you in my #41 post.

Just that I was up to my usual crank pranks to stimulate the economy and hoping you would allow A-Joe off leash for a day to romp with da Tsaiko Calender Crew.

    Tanks eh!

  63. koakane™:

    stretch,

wot no pong, flutes, quarter exchanges lattas tonight?

  64. LizKauai:

brew - re your #59- therin was the ironic obvious... bwahahaha!

  65. d1shima [sez:]:

    $10, huh?

Hmmm....... I'm looking at the numbered certificate w/ Colt's sig and the former coach's and Mack's autograph in my $150 copy......

    Okay, I feel good now.
When do the adult bevs start getting served for Jason's B-day?

  66. wafan:

    A-Sports . . .

Nah. I know. Just teasing! It was funny, though. Sorry, I have to get my mind out of the gutter after working with high school kids. Just listening to their conversations would corrupt anyone's mind.

Another two hours before the Wahine take on the Sun Devils!

    Washed my van -- check
Went to the chiropractor -- check
Walked for one hour -- check
    Checked blog -- check

    Now for lunch.

  67. brew808:

... is duffer the one Tsaiko working today? :)

How long is A-Joe going to sleep? I mean, if it's partly for a beauty rest, it might be for a looooonnnnnngg..... Nah! Just kidding!

  68. Kekoa:

Liz ~ Good ting da wallet was in Eleele and not Hanalei...on a Saturday...you would have to reschedule for next week!

    Wafan-

Understandable (about the hs kids). Do what's for lunch? Did you decide?

  79. brew808:

    wafan - When A-Joe posted this morning at 6 AM-HST - he wasn't getting up early.... :D

  80. LizKauai:

I worked for Paul Allen for a few months.
Coulda been the highest paying job in my career.
Then the company downsized, I got laid off and they made my assistant do my job.
    Then the company went bankrupt.

But Mr. Allen is still a very smart and progressive-thinking person. And puts his money where his ideas are to see which ones can actually fly.

Yea- UH- get those laptops cranking!
Easier to see videos than on an iTouch.
Make sure you get plenty battery powah.

  81. d1shima [sez:]:

    Run smart, Big Brown.
    This is a short race.

Stay healthy - after a W today, Belmont is all yours.
I haven't seen a more exciting race horse since Secretariat.
    really.

  85. wafan:

    A-Sports . . .

Yep, Norma's. Yum! Onolicious burgers, fries, fry-sauce, and a diet Coke (gotta balance out the fat from the burger and fries).

    Brew . . .

How come A-Sports is already awake? HA!

Sorry. Being naughty. It is the sun, I tell you. The sun, and the heat.

  86. brew808:

I had to Google it - Uwajimaya is big time Japanese supermarket huh?

  87. LizKauai:

Did Kate Robinson write anything recently? I can't seem to find an update.

    1.5 more hours to SOFTBALL!

  88. d1shima [sez:]:

    Liz,

Try stay outta da vog. ( right! Like how you going do that? No breathe?)
No need to get "shaky" again, eh? (anyway, take care.)

  89. Addahknowsports:

OMG! My sentences are all screwed up. Must be the fact that I slept at 2:30ish last night.

Joe is still sleeping for those concerned. He will probably still be by the time I leave the house.

  90. LizKauai:

d1- I made a vog blog last night...that's how nasty it is.

I have to sing this afternoon with my girlfriend's church- all the way in Kapaa!
    croak
    creak...

    time por kope.

    cu laters at softball time!

  91. brew808:

Yeah Liz - I was disappointed that there wasn't a Journal entry by Kate Robinson in this morning's HA. I wonder if the brillian HA managers only signed her up for two days? Or.... it might be that some Reader's comments scared her away.... j/k :D

  92. gigi-hawaii ©:

A-Sports ~ Gotta be at my cousins Persuading reception at the Manoa Ball Room. If I step outside and hear the roar of the crowd from da stadium yelling, Jason - Jason -Jason!...that's it...I'm ditching the party and coming to the stadium!

Yes, the Beverton Uwajimaya has "local" stuff too. Anytime I make a trip to Portland or Seattle, there is always a stop at Uwajimaya.

  107. Stretch:

While at the UH Architecture golf tourney yesterday, jojo was helping at the putting contest. It was a little slow so she decides to pick up the putter and try a few for herself. She was getting set to putt and then stands back up and looks at me. She had to make sure that I wasn't going to video tape her golfing. I guess she didn't want to be famous like gigi. Not sure why she would think I would do that to her. Me?? Nah

BTW – I did find this video that everyone might find interesting. Don’t know who uploaded it but it appears to be shot with a phone camera so need to use glasses.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WkBR3DLzHk

I forgot to mention, while I was standing on the #10 tee at Waikele waving bye to jojo & jeje as they were driving out of the parking lot, jeje yells, "We gotta go home and do something!!" Funny thing is I don’t think they was joking….

  108. wafan:

Watching "Secret Agent Cody Banks". That learning to drive scene was absolutely hilarious. The guy reminds me of my drivers ed instructor, Mr. Chun. He was at Damien. Funny guy. I still remember him saying, "Gas 'em, boy! Gas 'em!" HA!

  109. Stephen Tsai:

I got the e-mail, but I'm having problems opening it. I'm going to try when I get into the office.

  110. d1shima [sez:]:

    Stretch,

By the seventh inning will we be able to remember the words to H BDay?
Maybe we should try Ozzie's version of "Ballpark"

  113. koakane™:

stretch did a shout out to "ask pal" to see if leahey and he can give a small hello to him and pan us in da crowd

  114. Stephen Tsai:

Of course, it's hard to leave the house now. I mean, Top Gun is on HBO, and they're playing that Berlin song.
For the Holiday Bowl, we went to that restaurant where Goose sings "Great Balls of Fire."
    Great ribs.

  115. MeiLing:

CONGRATS! to the graduates, Candace, Crystal & Allie!

I was just in Eugene last June for my son's graduation. It's lovely this time of year, but the hills are alive with the sound of sneezing from the grass pollen.

Have a wonderful day everybody! Have fun Jason!

  116. d1shima [sez:]:

    dj,

    Mahalo!

  117. brew808:

hmmm, I wonder what Jason's 1st alcoholic beverage will be.

    Beer? Wine? Hi-ball?

  120. Stephen Tsai:

    Just spoke to Leahey.
He's going to give somebody a shout-out tonight.

  121. brew808:

  124. LizKauai:

Woo hoo- gotta watch da game and look for da SHOUT!

  125. brew808:

Speaking for Jason: :D Will Princess Leila be there? :D

  126. Stephen Tsai:

Hey, we need to keep track of everyone's birthday. So, everyone, tell me the day. I'll log it (or SteveM will log it) and we have shout-outs year 'round.

  127. Stephen Tsai:

If Jason is at the state track meet, then he'll see Leila.

  128. Stephen Tsai:

Maverick and Charlie are kissing now.
And there goes the Berlin song.

  129. d1shima [sez:]:

    Stephen,

    Great Balls of Fire

(actually UHFan808 takes the notes at karaoke)

  131. Stephen Tsai:

And Maverick and Goose, having learned that Iceman took the lead, just said: I feel the need...the need for speed. Then they just gave the worst high-five ever.
I didn't know Dan Kelly was in Top Gun.

  132. d1shima [sez:]:

    Where is UHFAN808 anyway?

  133. LizKauai:

    wow- d1-you so young!

    Mine is march 28, 1950

    Kekoa (#100)- Yeeee haaaaaawww!

    Liz (#103) - Exactly!

maybe Kelly and chawan_cut should re-enact that Hi-5

  137. Stephen Tsai:

    liz — march 28.

  138. Stephen Tsai:

Speaking of 808, maybe Jason's first drink should be a Funky Cold Medina.
Just tell him not to snuggle with Sheena.

  139. Stretch:

Not sure if I she wants me to announce but since we are on the subject of birthdays... midori is June 19, the same night of the Dinner Call at Genji's. We can all sing her Happy Birthday there. She will probably be pissed at me now since I spilled the beans but what can she do to me?? kick me in my shin??

  140. d1shima [sez:]:

    Stephen,

You can mark it as my grandfather's day, too.
But he passed a while ago.

    B4 blogs were invented.

but that doesn't necessarily mean he's not lurking.

    Liz,
Is that a commentary on my looks? ;-)

  141. gigi-hawaii ©:

    It's in the background.

  143. d1shima [sez:]:

    Stretch,

You better hope midori aims that low!

  144. Stephen Tsai:

  149. Stephen Tsai:

    And when is Stretch's b-day?

  150. d1shima [sez:]:

    Stephen,

Maybe a reminder from the "home" team to the Top Gun students?

  151. Stephen Tsai:

    Brother Mike's is July 29.
"Ferd" and Rich Miano were born on Sept. 3. Just think of Papa Was a Rolling Stone.
"It was the third of September, that day I'll always remember ..."

  152. Stretch:

ST - nobody needs to know, I don't want to pull a homey

  153. wafan:

Hi! I am wafan, and I am an Aries. I like walk on the beach, sunsets, ummm. Oh.

    Next year April 16.

  154. Stephen Tsai:

    I'm sure Midori7 will tell us Stretch's b-day.

  155. d1shima [sez:]:

wow, we can turn his name into a verb

    Like: Pauley got "Norvilled"

Our version: Jason got "homey'd" the other night

  156. Stephen Tsai:

    Remember that song Float On?
    It was by the Floaters.
They start off by giving their signs.

  157. Stephen Tsai:

"Let me know how sweet it can be, sharin' your love, with Larry ..."

  158. Bulla:

I'll be back for Liz's softball updates.

  163. d1shima [sez:]:

    Stephen,

  164. djmitcho:

    If anyone cares...July 21

    wafan,
April 16 just happens to be my mom and my step-mom's b-days too.

    ST,
I think the sign refers to being able to win any encounters the pilots have since the bad guys are called "bandits".

I think the Top Gun anthem is one of the coolest songs ever. It's a great song to do introductions to. We walked out to our senior assembly to that song in high school.

  165. d1shima [sez:]:

Well, Mrs. d1shima has settled on Pretty Woman.

    Jerry Rice: All-Time Leading Scorer
    49ers 44 - Raiders 14
Sep. 5, 1994 at Candlestick Park

The 49ers opened the 1994 season on Monday Night with a 44-14 shellacking of the Los Angeles Raiders at Candlestick Park. Entering the contest, Jerry Rice was within striking distance of Jim Brown’s all-time touchdown mark of 126. By the end of the evening, Rice set a record to establish himself as the NFL’s new touchdown leader.

For the evening, Rice shattered Brown’s record by scoring three touchdowns. His first came on a 69-yard scoring pass from Steve Young where he caught the ball over the middle, broke a tackle and raced the distance for the score. Rice scored the record-tying touchdown on a reverse – taking the handoff from Ricky Watters and sprinting 23 yards for the score.

The record breaker came during the fourth quarter with 4:05 showing on the clock. Rice hooked up with Steve Young for a 38-yard scoring reception between two defenders. That score gave Rice a total of 127 touchdowns and the leadership in the record books. The 49ers other scores came on scoring passes of 15-yard and 8-yards to TE Brent Jones. RB Ricky Watters contributed a one-yard run around the end. Doug Brien connected on a 33-yard field goal to finish the scoring.

Ahhhhh - those were the Good 'ol days.... :D

Freshman Krista Donnenwirth was named Newcomer of the Year, while ASU second basemen Mindy Cowles and STANFORD catcher Rosey Neill were both awarded Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors. Coach of the Year was awarded to Arizona State's Clint Myers, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

    Hi, Tsaiko Nation,

Finally back from Orlando, glad that's over.

    Jason,

A very happy birthday to you. The Tsai-Meisters tribute to you is spot on and fits you to a T.

    LizK,

Thanks for the great reporting, again.

The blog is humming again lately, could all the problems actually have been fixed?

    Hi Jason, my young friend,

    Life holds countless blessings, too,
When we have a faith that's true,
Joys are greater, cares are lighter,
Friends are dearer, hopes are brighter,
    Prayers are answered all lifelong,
When we have a faith that's strong.

God Bless You on Your Birthday!

  298. Lopaka43:

TALLAHASSEE --- It is a battle of perceptions that Urban Meyer has had to deal with the last few days. It started this past Thursday when Jamar Hornsby was arrested and charged with fraudulent use of a credit card and extended into the weekend when freshman defensive lineman Matt Patchan was shot in the shoulder in Tampa. If you judge by the reaction of some in the media and read the message boards of some of Florida’s rivals, then you might come to the conclusion there is an out of control element at work among the Gators. Tuesday night, Meyer was quick to point out that one player making bad decisions doesn’t make a statement about the entire team.

May 14 story posted on GatorSports website. (Need a subscription to read the full story)

  299. Lopaka43:

Ashley Slonina died on October 12, 2007 in a high-speed motorcycle accident that also took the life of the driver, Michael Guilford, a walk-on quarterback who was one of her best friends. By all accounts, Ashley Slonina was the kind of girl that made friends easily and people just loved to be around. Among her many friends were so many of the players on the Florida football team and that included Jamar Hornsby.

Ashley trusted Jamar Hornsby. How he got hold of her credit card is something we will likely find out sometime in the future --- Hornsby claims he didn’t steal it --- but starting the day after her death, he is charged with using it 70 times and charging nearly $3,000 of goods and services. Arrested last week and charged with credit card fraud and larceny, Hornsby has been dismissed from the Florida football team by Coach Urban Meyer.

More detail on the Jamar Hornsby story which contributes to the perception of Florida having an out-of-control element on their team.

    Lopaka43 ~

If you read between the lines, it gives you the impression that the gators are no where near as "together" as the Warriors. Our guys are very tight with each other and are sincerely very supportive as well. That makes a HUGE difference in their particular case.

Injuries to key personnel can be a problem for any team at anytime. I don't wish that on any team. We want to beat them when they have their best players on the field so that there is no excuses.

Off field antics can also be a distraction, and have a negative effect on the team. Seems like the geckos have had their share of problems in that area. I doubt if we will have that problem. bhf2 will be on their okole if they even look sideways!

Bottom line is, we have a very well rounded group of players that are pointed in the right direction. They will represent well, and can beat these gator geckos.

  301. Stephen Tsai:

They turned off the A/C in our office.
We're all boiled peanuts, which, as it turns out, is one of the answers to the new local grinz test.

  304. Lopaka43:

Here is the ESPN assessment of the SEC, including Florida, coming out of spring practice.

The review for Florida focuses on the emergence of running back Chris Rainey and pass rusher Carlos Dunlap, the youth of their secondary, the need to provide more protection against or diversions of hits on Tebow, the inexperience of their interior defensive line, and the likelihood that Florida will rotate quarterbacks to help keep Tebow fresh.

  305. LizKauai:

  310. Kazz:

    From the Scout message boards:

Just watched the ending of the KHON News and Joe Moore said he's been on Hawaii television for almost 40 years (sheesh, that long?) but then he mentioned that nothing goes on forever and that he would have an announcement regarding his future at the end of next week. Sounds serious.......must make many on this board want to throw a party...

I never watch KHON news and I wasn't home last night so... anyone else saw this?

  311. Stephen Tsai:

Wish C.J. Hawthorne good luck as he tries out with the Bills.

  312. Lopaka43:

I got curious about how hard it is to beat Florida in The Swamp since Urban Meyer became coach in 2005:

In 2007, they played eight games at home and lost 2 times (Auburn beat them 20-17 and Georgia beat them 42-30)

In 2006, they lost only one game all year and that was on the road (Auburn beat them 27-17)

In 2005, they won all seven of their home games, but lost three times on the road.

It will take great focus, preparation, and intensity to win in such a setting. There is no need for fear, but we face a great challenge and a rare opportunity to measure ourselves against the best. Go WARRIORS!!

  313. Stephen Tsai:

    Re: Joe Moore.
    "Sweeps Month" ends Wednesday.

  314. Jason:

My reaction when I saw today's post:

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

My reaction when I saw this ad:

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Thanks for all the birthday wishes, guys. We're going to have a nice, clean, fun time at the baseball game tonight, right? Right? :!:

I thought I already mentioned that my first alcoholic purchase will be white wine. I gotta learn how to make a white wine sauce. It's gonna feel weird, though, buying alcohol. My sister only buys the weak drinks; my Mom and I don't drink at all. And it's going to stay that way — no Aunty Marialani for me.

BTW, as you can tell, I survived the hike up Makapu‘u Lighthouse Trail. Medics only have to resuscitate me four times. Nah, once we went past the first lookout, it was alright. Going down was harder, my knees were taking a beating. We went afterwards to Hanauma Bay, but they stopped us cause we took our church bus, and they said "groups" need permits. So instead, we went to Costco, got some food, then went to Sandy Beach.

Oh yeah, and congratulations to all the graduates. A bunch of my friends are walking tomorrow; it's too bad that the ceremony is always on Sunday, I can't make it cause of church. But I am proud of ALL of them!

And about time that the football coaches finally get laptops. It's not like they are that expensive anymore.

Two more things. First, I was the top fundraiser (not organizer) for Relay for Life, but that was only because the Tsaikos stepped up and gave so generously. All I did was bug people for money; that's no different than what I do with my Mom. :-)

(BTW, the new watch I have — fundraising gift from RFL. The more you raise, the better the gift. So everyone, thanks for my new watch.)

And finally ... I miss Discovery Zone!!! :-D

  315. d1shima [sez:]:

    Lopaka43,

    Thanks for the good stuff.
Dunlap and Rainey were very impressive in their spring game. Both wear #8. Hope UH is on the positive end of "who 'ate' who" at the end of the game.

  316. Jason:

C'mon, C.J.! Buffalo could be a nice fit for him, they aren't all that deep at receiver, and a smaller guy like Lee Evans has had success in their system. (Then again, Lee Evans was a first-rounder.)

  317. d1shima [sez:]:

    Good luck to CJ.
If he sticks will our blog host become a fan of the B-I-L-L-S?

  318. d1shima [sez:]:

    Jason,

    Stop studying NFL rosters.
You should be concentrating on cocktail mixes to see what you'd like to order tonight ;-)

  319. Lopaka43:

    Per Gatorcountry.com:

PERCY HARVIN UPDATE: Percy Harvin, who could very well have a Heisman Trophy season in the fall if he is healthy, is making a nice recovery from surgery on his heel that should eliminate the chronic Achilles tendonitis that has plagued him since he's been at the University of Florida.

"Percy's in his boot and he's off his crutches," said Meyer, who pointed out that Harvin is in the weight room, working out his upper body "three days a week very hard. As far as strength he's a beast because he didn't really didn't go home. He's just been rehabbing with Coach Marotti. He's one on one with him and he's doing great."

Harvin is on schedule to fully recover in time to participate in practice once two-a-days crank up in August.

Gator fans on this blog are happy to hear that Harvin is making a full recovery and expect him to "shred" our defense. They are referring to the games against Hawaii and Miami as tuneups before the Tennessee game.

  320. d1shima [sez:]:

    Stephen,

    No A/C?
Maybe the honchos are training you for conditions in the Swamp?
Imagine today's weather but 15 degrees hotter. Kinda like summer in NYC?

  321. wafan:

    Jason . . .

I hope you have a great and safe time tonight with all of the Tsai-ko's. I was going to say they are all talk and no action but that would be a lie. Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

    Happy 21st!

  325. Jason:

It was either Shirley Temple or gigi.

  326. d1shima [sez:]:

    Lopaka43,

    From tha same blog:

I really think that Harvin will make it possible for the other play makers to have some big games. Then, once defensive coordinators realize that they cant double Percy constantly, Percy will have HUGE games. God, I cant wait for September!!!!!!!!!

I hope they ALL forget the UH game Is in AUGUST!

  327. gigi-hawaii ©:

sorry, at 99, I am older than S Temple! And I am not attracted to younger men!

  328. wafan:

Finally decided against Norma's. It mainly has outdoor seating -- it is way too hot today. Right now it is 89 and is actually cooler than it was a couple of hours ago. I think we really did get hotter than Honolulu did. And, it is not the hottest part of the day, yet. That will be in another hour or so.

Maybe go there tonight for dinner when it finally cools off -- hoping for anything below 80.

  329. wafan:

  331. Stretch:

Jason - stick to Shirley Temple

  332. Lopaka43:

This is the last of my posts of Florida info. I'm not boosting Florida, but I think we need to see what we are up against. Urban Meyer has his own website which has all sorts of bells and whistles designed to impress recruits and fans.

The site has a fly-in intro that takes you from a picture of the globe down into The Swamp, and includes videos of practices, and pictures of the team.

There is no reason we couldn't do the same thing for Coach Mack and the Warriors.

  333. wafan:

    Jason . . .

Of course, being older than you (I think all of us are older than you), I know I smell like an old person. The trick is to hang around older people so your old person smell is not as noticable.

    HA!

  334. Jason:

Alright guys, I'm heading out early so that I get to the game on time this time. See you there! Go Nā Wahine and go 'Bows!

    “Sweeps Month” ends Wednesday.

    I thought the same thing.

  339. mctruck:

    Gigi,

77 degrees inyour house and you wearing a sweater??? aeeeesoooos!, for me, I would definitely get a heat stroke and die......well, at least a heat stroke.

  340. wafan:

Mmmm. The smells of BBQ's being lit. Soon the smell of chicken, beef, pork and vegi's.

    Yum!

  341. gigi-hawaii ©:

    McTruck,

I have the thermostat set for 78 degrees, so the thermometer fluctuates between 75 and 77.

Before I turned on the a/c, it was 89 degrees inside the house.

  342. FloridaTed:

    Lopaka43,

I'm getting the same stuff here from all the locals. I certainly hope that the Gators will take us as lightly as their fans are. The general consensus is that it will be a cake walk, merely a tune-up game. Overconfidence is a very slippery slope, If we can hit them early and our defense can hold them down somewhat, hopefully a little panic will set in the Gators hearts and they start to press. Mistakes could result and growing confidence on our side. They are looking at the SB and think that's our team, they will be surprised. The SB wasn't even last years team.

  343. MeiLing:

The Wahine game is being broadcast online. Go Wahine 'Bows!

IMUA men's baseball! Have a great time Tsai-kos! Sounds like you can treat Jason to an ice tea....

  344. Lopaka43:

    Florida Ted

In our favor is the fact that the last time the veterans on this team played was against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. That was our tuneup for the Florida game.

Important to stay humble, work hard, and create no bulletin board motivators for the Gators.

  345. MeiLing:

    Kate R. just hit a 3-run homer!

  346. wafan:

    3 run homer by Robinson!!!

    3-1 'Bows

    Yahooooooooooooooooo

  347. wafan:

    Lopaka . . .

Ummmm, the ex-coach already did before he scampered out of town.

  348. MeiLing:

    Valana walked.

  349. MeiLing:

    End of 1st: 3-1 Hawaii

  350. wafan:

As much as people have not liked this announcer I have to say he also not one of my favorites. BUT, if it were not for him we would have a very difficult time staying up-to-date with Na Wahine.

    Go 'Bows! Both teams!!!

  351. MeiLing:

  352. wafan:

    Hi ML!

    Are you home now?

  353. wafan:

    Another HR!!! Whoo-hoo!

    Let's go 'Bows!

  354. MeiLing:

wafan, I drove back last night after the D-Backs game. Got home about 2 am.

    I can't report like Liz....

Homerun by Milca! w/ 2 outs

    4-1 Hawaii

  355. wafan:

    ML . . .

Good to see you made it home safely. That is always a good thing!

No one can do the play-by-play like LizK. I am just happy I can listen to the game live, and share it with others.

Darn. They hit a HR for 2. 4-2 'Bows.

  356. MeiLing:

Lights on at Farrington Stadium at ASU as dusk falls over AZ with the moon rising...the winds picked up.

Miss ST. Homerun by B. Bell

    Score: 4-2

  357. wafan:

    ML . . .

One of the things that drove me crazy when I moved back home was not being able to do things like go to MLB or NFL games.

I called it Rock Fever. I even resorted to island hopping several times a year. Nothing would cure the feeling so I had to move back here. It is not as if I travel a lot up here, though. I think it just has to do with the thought that I could do it if I wanted.

  358. MeiLing:

    Gotta ck the DBacks game...

Catch ya up in a mini

  359. Esme:

Dragging this over from the previous blog, just in case:

THE VERY HAPPIEST OF BIRTHDAYS TO MY “SON,” JASON!
    (aka JaSON)

Thanks for lighting up the blog with your smarts and spirit. You make me proud to be known as your Nanay.

  360. Esme:

And you Tsaikos partying with Jason tonight: Please take care of my boy! Bring him back safe and not too traumatized, now.

  361. MeiLing:

Hawaii up in the bottom of the 3rd.

Homerun by lead-off hitter Brandy Peiler!!! 5-2 Hawaii
    Robinson up to bat.
    No one out.

wafan, that's why I'm planning to go to UH football games. I'm going to get to the Bay Area to see an Oakland A's game & SF for a Giants game before Fall. But I don't need to travel that much & I think I could handle being home. "Be here now." I've lived under the SF Peaks here & don't miss the ocean. I just enjoy living where I am...even when I lived in the Ozarks in MO.

  362. brew808:

    MeiLing -

Friday, June 6, 7:05 pm Oakland A's vs. Angels
    Kurt Suzuki bobble-head doll night!

BTW - you're doing great w/ the play-by-play. I like the way you "call" the Wahine home-runs!. Well, maybe you could do a bit better. Yeah - I think you need more practice! :D Keep trying.....

  363. brew808:

... keep trying... meaning - Please call more Wahine home-runs, please!!!

  364. MeiLing:

Robinson stranded on 2nd end of 3rd. Hawaii 5-2

Bulldogs have a hit, runner on 1st.

It's fun to watch Detroit's Edgar Renteria, Gary Sheffield, Pudge Rodrigues in last night's game. And "I love my Diamondbacks!" Go D-Backs! They're down 3-2 in the 8th. Trace Adkins is doing a concert tonight at the ballfield after the game.

  365. MeiLing:

    Double-play by UH 4-6-3.
    3rd out.

To bottom of 4th UH up.

  366. brew808:

    Diamondbacks - #22 Eric Byrnes :D

  367. wafan:

    ML . . .

I really tried to love it and stay at home. I just could not do it. I think the major problem was the island mentality. Not that that is a bad thing at all.

Still, I miss Hawai'i and am thinking of moving back once I retire from education in six or seven years. I can always get a job -- I know how to say, "Is that for here or to go?" and "Do you want fries with that?"

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  368. wafan:

    Hey Brew!

    How are things going?

  369. MeiLing:

    Grimes up, bunt, out.
    Milca out. Yoshikawa advances.
    (I'm missing plays...watching the D-Backs game. Top of the 9th, we're down 1)
    Gould retired 6-3.

  370. wafan:

Shucks. First inning the 'Bows do not score a run.

  371. brew808:

    June 17-19 (Tue, Wed, Thurs)
    Oakland Athletics @ Arizona Diamondbacks

  372. brew808:

wafan - Aloha! Welcome to Walmart!

  373. wafan:

    Brew . . .

I completely forgot about that store!

  374. MeiLing:

Loved watching Byrnesie when he played for the A's. Sat in the (left)outfield last night and got to cheer on Byrnes when he came out. Great to see him hit his homer last night to break his hitting slump.

    Walk to B. Bell.
Boyce at 2nd on a double.
Come on D! Coolen calls time out to talk to Robinson.

  375. MeiLing:

Suicide squeeze scores a run for Bulldogs.
Boyce tagged out a home. 2 outs.
    Score 5-3 Hawaii.
    Runners at the corners.
    2-out RBI single.
    Score 5-4.
    Robinson is pulled.

I think the traffic is what will drive me crazy (punny!) when I move home. I'd like to find a job at UH, live in McCully-Mo'ili'li, walk to work. That's my goal.

  376. MeiLing:

    Jessica Morton in to pitch.
Bainbridge retired, 2 runners left on.

    Come on Wahine! Hele on!

  377. brew808:

  382. brew808:

BTW - Congrats to the Tsai 'ohana! When is the big celebration for #1? And may we inquire as to the Allie Plans?

Say - I see in the HA that there's a Career Fair at some public HS in town. Will there be anyone advertising for careers in the publishing/journalism field?

  386. Stephen Tsai:

  391. MeiLing:

    Milca out 1 > 3.

    Top of 7th ~ Bulldogs.

We're going to play ASU tomorrow cuz we're gonna win this game!

  392. Stephen Tsai:

  393. brew808:

  400. MeiLing:

ST ~ That's not me in a floppy hat...no pics of me...

I'll try send another single of some players. But w/ the netting, it's not I have the bestest...

I have to get back to straightening this house & organizing stuff for a yard sale...'Argh! In my next home, I'm going Zen-sparse decor...

  401. brew808:

    Mahalo MeiLing!!! ❀ :D

  402. MeiLing:

This blog is slowing waaaayyyy down on refreshing.

"...it's not the bestest I have." tried to correct text & back-spacing put my cursor in the middle of the sentence. This is the first time I've experienced this problem. Now I know what people are complaining about. Yuck!

  403. Stephen Tsai:

    Thanks again for the play-by-play.
I'm off to the Div. II volleyball championship.
I'll be back in a bit.

  404. brew808:

Bummers - I was hoping to see MeiLing wearing a floppy hat!

We've seen photos of gigi wearing a floppy hat!
We've seen photos of Mrs. A-House wearing a floppy hat!
    I think I've seen a photo of midori7 wearing a floppy hat!

.... I think everyone wants to be like Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw!!! ... wearing a floppy hat!

  405. wafan:

    Whoo-hoo ML!

    Nice job with the play-by-play.

And, why no photo of you? You cannot be funnier looking than me! And, my picture did not break the internet.

Anyone out in Tsai-koland have a photo of ML?

  406. MeiLing:

K, I'll probably at hula practice tomorrow. I'm sure LizK will do play by play if she's around. IMUA RAINBOW WAHINE!!! I think the announcer said that all runs for Hawaii were scored on homeruns!

Fox Sports Net here is broadcasting a day game: NMSU vs LaTech. They just mentioned UH scoring 5 runs in an inning on this LaTech pitcher. And more about the games played at HI. Cool!

  407. wafan:

On top of that kudos from the headmaster himself!

  408. gigi-hawaii ©:

There was a pic of MeiLing with Las Vegas at a Makino Chaya CC a while back. SJ Macro provided the link to his album.

    She has long black hair.

  409. MeiLing:

SteveM has a pic of me at a CC w/ las vegas when we were both home in Feb. I have a photo of las vegas, me & my Mom in LV last weekend, but it needs editing.

When I was at the game yesterday, I had a ticket for a seat above the Miss. St. dugout. So I walked over to HI's section & asked if I could sit in the roped off section w/ the HI fans. They said, "Yeah, you have the right shirt on." I was wearing my green Warriors Football t-shirt.

  410. MeiLing:

I actually have a black cowboy hat that looks like the Chancellor's hat without the back flap. Gotta go hang out with the paniolo on the Big Island to look at home with it on. Guess I gotta move that hat, too. Soooo much stuff, and it's only stuffs...

    K, I'm off...laterz

  411. Addahknowsports:

    Okay Jason, Tsaikos and Tsaikettes...

    Here we come!

Have a good evening all! :)

  412. wafan:

    So, is anyone still here?

  413. wafan:

    LISTEN!

The sound of one hand clapping.

  414. brew808:

Softball Update: a good day for the WAC schools....

#12 Fresno State defeated #21 San Diego State, 2-0 in 11 innings and plays #24 Cal in their Regional Final

LaTech defeated Auburn, 2-1 and play #4 Texas A&M in their Regional Final

Nevada needs to beat Purdue tonight (I don't know if they're playing... seems pretty late!) to advance and play #2 UCLA tomorrow.

UH Wahine defeated MSU, 7-4 and advance to play ASU in their Regional Final - 10 am HST!

    • • :!::lol: • Go Na Wahine!!! • :lol::!: • •

  415. brew808:

    wafan! Behave yourself!

  416. wafan:

Is this what it sounds like when a tree falls in a forest and no one is there?

  417. FloridaTed:

    Hi,wafan,

just me lurking. Like a stadium 6 hours before game time.

  418. brew808:

Wow - talk about a late start...

Purdue will play Nevada at approximately 12:45 a.m. ET.

Okay - only this time... Go Wolfpack ... girls? b__ches? Go WAC!
wafan - what is the proper term for female canines? :D

  419. wafan:

    Hey Brew!

Thanks for the WAC updates. Looks like there is a possibility of an all-WAC final four! Whoo-hoo!

I thought I was alone so decided to amuse myself.

    That did not sound right.

BaseBows game on now -- 2nd inning.

  420. wafan:

    Hi F-Ted!

Looks like it is the mainland Tsai-ko's who will be holding down the fort tonight.

  421. brew808:

Howzit FloridaTed! :D I always think I'm seeing, fluoridated! Funny huh?

  422. wafan:

HA! Brew, you know very well what the correct term is. Lady Wolves.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  423. brew808:

"...so decided to amuse myself." Okay, Damien guy.... sorry!

  424. wafan:

When I Believe visited that was one of the things we talked about -- people's blog names. For the longest time people would always call me WarFan. Made me sound so violent. HA!

  425. wafan:

    Brew . . .

Better than playing with myself. HA!

  426. FloridaTed:

    brew808,

    I'm not a dentist, lol.

  427. wafan:

Maybe the Kane need some help from the Wahine.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha!

  428. brew808:

    wafan -

I'm having trouble with that mental picture of a Lady Wolf!

First - I picture the wolf from Little Red Riding Hood, now wearing a muu muu and a floppy hat!

Then, is the Lady Wolf suppose to be serving us tea and cookies/finger sandwiches using fine china? No!
Is the Lady Wolf curtsying and sharing a ballroom dance, or snarling and biting? Yeah - the latter!
Will the Lady Wolf share her bone and treats, or use you as a chew toy?
See what I mean?  :D

  429. wafan:

    Brew . . .

Sounds like your Lady Wolf has PMS. HA!

As for using me as a chew toy -- more fat than meat.

  430. wafan:

That is kind of scary. A Tsaikette with PMS. Yow!!!

Thanks for the mind picture Brew.

  431. brew808:

... finger sandwiches - just noticed that one! Ha!

FloridaTed - not a dentist, GOOD! Me no likey dentists! But fluoridated means white teeth, so.... :D

wafan - I think there was a Chinese restaurant in downtown Honolulu call Wa Far Hut, ... I think!

  432. wafan:

Finally, the very first hit of the game.

And, with that I bid you all a good night!

  433. brew808:

Hmmmmmm.... if I keep this up, we'll all have to be fluoridated to cleanse these odd mental images from our poor minds! :D

UH Rainbow Warrior Baseball and Utah Valley State are tied, 0-0 after 3 innings.

    Goodnight wafan!

  434. FloridaTed:

    good night, gang.

  435. Esme:

Wow, so few here. Everyone else must be out toasting our boy Jason's 21st! :D

  436. HiFlyer:

I think they are all at the ball game with Jason.

  437. brew808:

    Hi HiFlyer! Hi Esme!

  438. HiFlyer:

Hi Brew, are you watching the bb game?

  439. brew808:

    When the blog goes still...
    Crikets and lurkers creep out...
    and rule Tsaiko land!
    :D

  440. brew808:

    No TV for me...
    only Don Robs on radio
    for baseball reports!

:o UH Rainbows trail Utah Valley State, 0-2 after 6 innings :(

  441. brew808:

Correction - Don Robbs Sorry about that!

Candace Murayama, Crystal Kimura and Allie Tsai CONGRATS ON YOUR GRADUATIONS!!!!
    Congrats, Parents of the Graduates!!!

MeiLing- way to go!!! Thanks for the Wahine Game II.

Just got back from the choir festival in Kapaa. All did well. Very enjoyable!
The vog, however, is still very very nasty out there!

    Hi brew808!

  443. oldie:

    Happy Birthday, Jason!

    Now that you're 21, I don't feel so old.

Hope you had a great day.

  444. brew808:

I suppose those of us not watching the game on K5 will miss Jim Leahy's special birthday "shout out" to Jason.... Bummers! :D :o

  445. LizKauai:

    Go- CJ!!!

    The game!!!
    OK.

  446. brew808:

  447. HiFlyer:

What happened to Esme, she popped in and disappeared.

  448. BNS:

    Happy birthday Jason
Thanks Liz for game one play by play and MeiLing for game two play by play

  449. brew808:

    Esme - her visits
    lightning quick, brilliant flash!
    only smiles persist...
    :D

  450. brew808:

A-House kindly explained this to me earlier... but-

 Why in the heck is UH Rainbow Baseball playing Utah Valley State!!!

  451. Garret:

Best of luck to Hawthorne! It is hard to make it as an undrafted free agent, but he has speed, hands, and character. If the NFL won't recognize that, then maybe he can get a shot in the CFL or some other league and get some recognition there so that they will give him a real shot in a year or two.

  452. brew808:

 Is Mike Trapasso responsible for the UH Baseball schedule, and for scheduling this series with Utah Valley State - the last home series for UH??!!!

  453. Garret:

Looks like Miami's new NT feels like he'll make Samson a better C...and the last two centers he was teammates with made it to the Pro Bowl, so hopefully he helps Samson do the same!

Ferguson, you see, will be practicing every day opposite second-year center Samson Satele and the hope is he can help the young offensive player improve just as he helped Kevin Mawae (with the Jets) and Andre Gurode (with Dallas) become better players.

Both have been Pro Bowl performers, by the way.

"The last two teams I played with, I faced the best two centers in the league," Ferguson told me. "That was Kevin Mawae when I was with the Jets and Andre Gurode with the Cowboys. When you go against Pro Bowlers every day in practice, it made me better. And I think I helped make them better."

Ferguson says he and Satele should become close -- just as he did with the other two centers -- because it suits everyone's best interest as well as the team's.

"You become one of the guy's best friends because you go and check with him every day and ask questions that help each other," Ferguson said. "You say, 'What about my technique? How was it then?' And they ask me the same about themselves. That's what I expect from the young guy here.

Everyone is asleep here and I just finished the rough draft of my next proposal...so I guess it is free play link time. Please ignore my next 5 posts if you don't want the off topic stuff.

This 13-year-old in Texas got a credit card for his Dad's account and went on a $30k spending spree. He got two $1000 per night call girls to come to the hotel room he rented for him and his friends...and the call girls were surprised that guys just wanted to play Halo all night instead of have sex. The kid's father responded to the incident by saying that he'd take his kid on a surprise trip to Disneyland!

  458. brew808:

    Hi Garret!

Yup - I think CJ can continue to play, NFL (maybe), CFL, Arena for sure - if he wants it! Go CJ! :o

Don't you have a conference in LV soon? Will you be hooking up w/ las vegas? Did you end up booking a room downtown? Will you be driving there? How much will gas cost? Is Lori the "bookkeeper/accountant" for ACR?

  459. Garret:

The Air Force wants a suite of hacker tools to be able to get access to and full control of any computer.

  460. Garret:

    Free play links pau.

  461. Garret:

    brew,

I agree that CJ will have a career if he wants it...but it is a hard road to go through the CFL or Arena leagues, so players really have to want it to stick with it. I'd love for him to get on an NFL team's practice squad, but that is hard as an undrafted free agent who seems to have been overlooked by the scouts.

  462. Garret:

I leave tomorrow for the conference. I haven't even practiced my presentation yet and haven't looked at my slides since I turned them in 2 weeks ago. So, that is what I'll be doing all of Sunday or Monday nights...the first time I'll be in Vegas and NOT gamble in a casino!

I will be driving my hybrid car, so gas won't be too bad for me.

Lori did our bookkeeping for awhile, but now that we have a big contract about to be deposited in our bank account and need to do payroll and other stuff my co-founder has taken over that burden.

I ended up booking a room at the Sahara for under $50 per night. I couldn't pass up that cost and its proximity to Harrahs is nice.

I didn't try to arrange something with las vegas, 702, or others because this trip is a packed business trip. I get in *late* Sunday night (I'm doing stuff with the in-laws, Lori, and my kids in the morning and midday), have to be at the conference from early Monday morning until it finishes (speakers sit in a special section all together, so they will notice if I'm not there!), then have the networking stuff over dinner, then will stay up all night practicing my presentation. Tuesday I'll be at the conference all day and then will drive home right afterwards.

I'll be in Vegas with my family in late June and hopefully will be able to meet up with Las Vegas then.

    Esme - her visits
    lightning quick, brilliant flash!
    only smiles persist… :D

Wow, brew wrote me a haiku!

I sound like the Chesire Cat.

  466. Garret:

Thank you brew! I would be more concerned about the conference if I was speaking on the first day. But since I won't have to present my stuff until Tuesday, I figure I can work on it Sunday and Monday night. I figured if I finished my proposal draft then I could send it out to a couple of people so they could read it and get feedback to me while I was at the conference.

It will be weird to go to Vegas and NOT have any cash with me, and know that I will not allow myself to gamble because I do not have time.

  467. Esme:

I am stoked about the news of Hawthorne's workout with the Bills. Go get em, CJ!

  468. SteveM:

:!: JASON 21 WATCH NEWS FLASH

Reports are the baseball game Tsai-ko's are heading for TJ's Sports Bar and Grill (where Kapiolani and King Street meet -- across from the HA building). Everyone invited to join the group there!

  469. Esme:

Best of luck to you, Garret. No worries — can handle!

  470. Esme:

SteveM, you must be tsychic. I was JUST thinking: I can't believe no one has posted so far with an update on the game outing and Jason's birthday ... and then there you were.

  471. brew808:

If and when I present stuff, I now like to have it scheduled early. That way, I come prepared, give my presentation, then I'm pau! I can spend the rest of the time fielding questions and/or having in-depth discussions with interested parties. And I can attend the other sessions, etc., or sometimes even escape to check out the local sights. Recently, I've cut back on my conference travel as I'm bombarded by questions that are either highly political, or most certainly controversial. I don't need that. Last week I passed on conferences in Lake Tahoe (nice!) and Albuquerque (spent lots of time there already - chiles). Oh well....

  472. Garret:

I have been donating money over the years to UT-Austin to the scholarship programs that gave me scholarships when I went there. You know when I realized that I was a good donor to the UT-Austin Engineering scholarship funds? When they decided to fly in a representative to San Diego to meet with me about their search for a new Dean of Engineering and to tell me about the new initiatives they are starting in the School of Engineering...in other words, they hope that I'll get excited enough about the new programs to donate even more.

The guy booked his flight late last week when I told him what day and time I could meet with him. I'll be seeing him on Thursday...when someone from a University books a flight and lets you pick the day, time, and place of the meeting, you know you have to hold on to your wallet!

  473. brew808:

    When Esme gets "stoked" -
there's soon to be smoke! Then swoosh...
    she's gone in a flash!

  474. Esme:

Boy, brew, yer on a roll. Add one more like that and you'll nearly have a limerick!

  475. Garret:

    brew,

I love the chile fries and burgers in Alguquerque! This conference is a little different because there is only one presentation at a time...everyone is in one big room for the entire conference. So, I won't miss any other session or presentation. Though I would prefer to speak early and be able to discuss stuff with people during the networking sessions. However, all of the presentations slides are being given to the attendees when they check in at the conference, so at least everyone will have my slides and can ask questions about them even before I give my talk.

I'd *love* to see you at a conference and to listen in on the political/controversial questions and answers!

  476. Garret:

    SteveM,

Thank you for the update on Jason's birthday celebration! I wish I could be there...

  477. Garret:

    Esme,

Thank you. I'm not worried at all yet. Sometime Tuesday afternoon that could change, but for now I'm calm!

  478. brew808:

There once was a gal name Esme...
Her visits to Tsaiko-land were often short and crazy...
But we cherished them so, and anxiously waited to know
all about HawaiiMoms and her family!!!

  479. brew808:

Say Esme - did you ever get the e-card I sent to you? I got a message saying the card was "undeliverable". :(

  480. brew808:

Garret - I'm probably paranoid - but my latest concern....

    - aerosol-like "nano-particles" being widely used (commercially) without sufficient research on possible ill-effects on all biosystems.... like humans!

Wow Esme- you get pretty haiku from brew...

  484. LizKauai:

  486. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

Definitely a weird sports day here in Hawai`i and elsewhere in the universe. We had not a clue when we went into our lunch meeting shortly after 11:30 am that the Wahine would be blown away. My first reaction upon hearing the score around 2 pm when we left the building and could turn on the radio was that they'd failed to show up and the game was forfeited because I cannot remember the last time the ten-run rule was invoked against them. Probably before Jason was diaper-free.

It was wonderful to hear that they won the next game, but can you imagine what must be going through their heads that they have play the same team not once but twice to win the regional.

For those of you who like to converse with God, please ask Her to make sure that she takes care of the Wahine tomorrow.

Saw Kazz and Jason off in the distance before the game which was packed with about 20 different kids' teams from around the island.

The senior ceremony at the conclusion of the baseball game was kind of subdued because of the loss. The bats had definitely cooled off - walked runners left on base two times and twice runners picked off trying to steal third.

Also saw Gigi off in the distance at the Book & Music Festival.

The dry season has started - no ball games here until August when the Wahine volleyball team gets back onto their court. But as DrDoc says - plenty MLB to watch on tv and, of course, lots of summer action films at the multiplexes around town.

Best of luck to folks graduating over the next two or three weekends.

  487. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

Whoops!! Forgot to capitalize the ess in She

  488. homey:

Ralph - It doesn't hurt to use a registry cleaner or defrag but you don't have to do that often unless you are constantly deleting and storing new files.

If you are using Firefox or some other browser that has auto delete features for temp file, cookies, history, etc. then you can set those parameters. The whenever you exit your browser it will automatically clean up for you.

You should also remove unneeded tasks that run in the background. Those processes can slow your computer down big time. That's why just booting up takes a long time. I think the executable file is called msconfig (google it to make sure).

Another thing to speed up the computer, get the newest processor or increase your memory.

If you have XP you may want to try this...

    click on Start
    >right click on my computer >properties > advanced tab > performance settings

    >adjust for best performance (make sure you know what you want to keep)

    >apply >ok

You can always revert back if you wish.

  500. Garret:

Looks like there won't be any conference changes for awhile, despite all of the rumors lately.

    Here's what we found out:

    * Memphis and East Carolina aren't going anywhere soon (much as they'd like to).
    * The next round of conference expansion -- or realignment -- isn't ready to take off yet. Too many BCS leagues are too healthy. The Big East, the league everyone thought would fold up and blow away, is arguably stronger financially than it ever has been. How the league survived the ACC's raid from five years ago and thrived will be in commissioner Mike Tranghese's obit (which we hope doesn't come for some time.)
    * Other BCS leagues ARE talking to schools. The Big Ten, for instance, might have expansion on the back burner. (Or, at least, not on a front burner.) But the league is still talking to a handful of potential 12th members. You know, just in case. Among those on the speed dial: Texas, Missouri, Syracuse and Rutgers. (Notre Dame? Puh-leeze. Don’t think the Big Ten's gonna get embarrassed a third time there. Besides, ACC Commissioner John Swofford has always held out hope he can make Notre Dame an offer the Fighting Irish won't refuse.)

  501. Garret:

Alabama signed a long-term deal with Coca-Cola. Another possible revenue stream for the Warriors? The increased prominence of the Warriors should lead to increased revenue in areas like this.

Crimson Tide Sports Marketing has reached a 10-year deal with Coca-Cola for it to be the official soft drink of UA athletics, according to Athletics Director Mal Moore. The deal is expected to be announced in the next few days.

"We're looking forward to continuing what has been a beneficial relationship between Alabama athletics and Coca-Cola," Moore said. "We're pleased and happy to have completed the bid process, and I want to thank the people at Coca-Cola for their efforts in obtaining the bid."

  502. Garret:

Texas raised $1.5 mil last night to help endow a Chair for Academics. Joe Paterno was the guest speaker.

More than 200 people gathered to hear Paterno and honor Brown, paying a minimum of $1,000 apiece to raise money for the newly created Mack Brown Distinguished Chair for Leadership in Global Affairs. The chair will be part of UT's Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law.

Joe Youngblood, executive director of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation, a partner in the Strauss Center, said Friday's fundraiser was expected to generate $1.5 million.

  503. Garret:

Q&A with NCAA President Miles Brand.

Q: Is the Academic Progress Rate (used to assess how schools fare in graduating athletes and, if necessary, punish them for unsatisfactory results) working?

A: Yes, it is. Again, it's not perfect, but not perfect in the sense that we are still sanctioning schools. If it was working perfectly, everybody would have got the message already, and we wouldn't have to sanction one-third of the Division I schools this year. We've seen measurable progress in terms of grade-point average and graduation and people staying in school.

Q: Only six Division I programs are making money. How long can this go on?

A: I don't know how long. Presidents' lives are short — 4 1/2 for a public university and 6 1/2 for a private university. So presidents turn over. Eventually, you may get another group that thinks differently, so you can't forever go forward with this. I don't know if it will change. I don't think in the near run it will. I don't think there is as much money in (a football playoff) as people think. A lot of the revenues are coming in through ticket sales and TV contracts on the regular season. I think you're going to continue to see good TV contracts in the regular season. If you had a playoff, what would the size of those regular-season contracts be?

  504. Garret:

Best of luck to the Wahine softball team today! I know that having to beat ASU twice in one day is a tough task...but it can be done!

  505. brew808:

Hawaii's Team might have a fan base of a million or so.
Polynesia's Team located in the center of the Pacific with ties to Asia and Austrailia would have a fan base of 100-1000X! That would make it much more marketable and attractive to sponsors. I hope JD has plans and makes some effort to grow the market/fan base. UH has only talkedabout it - talk, no action. That needs to change lead by Jim Donovan, Chancellor Hinshaw, Coach Mack and all of Warrior Nation!!!

(Whew - it's too early to be on the soap box.... so, I'll get off of it now....)

:D Good Morning Tsaikos and Warrior Nation!!! :D

Eventually had to sit under the tree in the front yard to try and catch a breeze. Finally gave up and took a fan outside. My neighbors came over to chat and eventually brought their fans outside, too.

I thought it but I did not say it . . . some of my neighbors were nearly translucent. Kind of reminded me of the English royalty and how they never saw the sun. Awwww, heck. This is Washington and it really was the first hot and sunny day of the year. I sure hope they are not sun-burned today!

Sorry, I did not leave the house yesterday! haha. Must've been some other old lady in a muumuu!

  525. gigi-hawaii ©:

    Al,

SOMETIMES, I am attracted to younger men -- those who are really outstanding -- such as Leonard Peters, Steve Nash, and Johnny Depp.

You really can't fault a 99 year old wahine for dreaming, now, can you?

  526. gigi-hawaii ©:

This morning, hubby and I will be practicing at the driving range and putting green at Pearl Country Club. Don't know if we have to be members... Wonder how long I will be allowed to play in a long muumuu, a floppy hat, and jogging shoes. Dress code, what dress code???

Then tonight, we will dine at Ciao Mein in the Hyatt Regency. Supposedly a blend of Italian and Chinese cuisine. All I know is both feature noodles!

  527. MeiLing:

    Aloha Kakahiaka! IMUA Rainbow Wahines!!!

I am going to be at hula practice when they play ASU today. Tsigh...

Garret, hope your presentation goes well. I was just in LV & didn't gamble. I was pulling weeds & trying to fix sprinkler systems. 'Auwe!

Jason, glad you had a great birthday with Tsaiko friends. Not drinking a lot is ok; alcohol = kilo-calories. I gave up beer in college, cuz I got a beer belly in one month working at a bar (free beer). Not worth it.

DPK, Al, you still working on the challenge? I lost one lb...tsigh. Taro mix waffles this morning doesn't help.

  528. gigi-hawaii ©:

When I googled “dress code at golf courses,” this is what I found:

    1. No dress code at municipal golf courses.
    2. The more you pay, the stricter the dress code.
    3. Most golf clubs will allow a collared shirt and shorts.
    4. A small number will not permit shorts and require golf slacks.

So looks like I am safe in a muumuu at municipal golf courses!

  529. gigi-hawaii ©:

    Great Morning All.

Melancholy end to the home schedule for the 'Bows last night :-(
Big MAHALO to Stretch for the tix.
Great seats! For those of you wondering why the home team bats were so quiet from the perspective we had, it was no surprise. Lots of movement on the ball from the UV pitcher. The guy rarely threw anything over 80 (sitting right behind the uys with the JUGGS) but kept the Rainbow batters befuddled.

    Good luck today.
    Go get'em!
    Then GO GET'EM SUMMOA!

  534. bighilofan2:

    howzit kekoa,

    The Gainesville Sun writes:

"The Gators lacked unity and chemistry last season, which can be traced to the offseason a year ago, when UF was coming off the national championship and everyone was too giddy to detect any potential problems in those areas. Meyer stressed chemistry and unity throughout the spring, and the Gators did seem to be closer than they were last season. Now, they have to remain in that togetherness mode during the summer workouts and conditioning program. These guys are going to have to get together on their own and play pitch-and-catch and put themselves through drills. This is where that championship bond starts to take hold.

    Come back, Percy (and others)

    * Coming off his heel surgery in the spring, wide receiver Percy Harvin must now do everything the doctors and trainers tell him to do to get back to 100 percent in the next six or seven weeks. Harvin is such an important part of the offense, and the Gators need him back at full speed to set so many things in motion. He is one of several key injured players who must make a successful (and fairly quick) comeback. The others are offensive tackle Phil Trautwein, offensive guards James Wilson, Jim Tartt and Maurice Hurt, quarterback John Brantley, linebacker Ryan Stamper and defensive tackle Javier Estopinan.

    ******Avoid the night life*******

    * During the offseason last year, several players got in trouble with some rowdy and embarrassing late-night behavior. This reflects one thing — a lack of leadership. The leaders of the 2008 team, quarterback Tim Tebow and middle linebacker Brandon Spikes, need to step up and make sure their teammates stay in line. Going out is acceptable. Going out and doing something stupid is not. Of course, the Gators are off to a really embarrassing start, with safety Jamar Hornsby getting the boot last week for felony theft and fraud.

    Hang on, Moody

    * After a slow start, Southern Cal transfer Emmanuel Moody came on strong at tailback in the last week of the spring, then he rushed for more than 100 yards in the Orange and Blue Debut. But he wiped out all that good stuff by losing a fumble in the end zone. Meyer is adamant Moody (or any other tailback) won't see the field if there is a chance he's going to fumble. Moody has some serious talent, but to showcase it and become a major contributor in the fall, he's got to fix his problem with ball security this summer.

    Keep eating, Rainey

    * Redshirt freshman Chris Rainey had a breakout spring, producing big play after big play at tailback and receiver. The goal now is to put some meat (and more muscle) on his thin frame. He's been working at it and is closing in on 180 pounds. Meyer would like him to be at about 185 by the start of the season. Running backs coach Kenny Carter has said he envisions Rainey eventually being an explosive 195-pound tailback. With some size to go along with his speed and skill, Rainey has a chance to be Harvin-like this season. So, eat up, Chris."

TO KNOW YOUR ADVERSARY IS TO KNOW YOURSELF

Hmmm... what else happened last night?

    Hmmmmm :-|

    Good Morning Tsaiko Nation!

Since my Red alert phone didn't go off while I was attending the wedding reception. I'm assuming either things were not going as planned, or my batteries are dead.

When I stepped outside the Manoa Ballroom and was greeted by groaning sounds coming from the stadium...I knew that it was curtains for the baseballers.

Awaiting a SITREP from the Team Jason party leaders.

Oh yeah, thanks for the memory jogger.

Guud fun at TJ's after the game.
Ten of us walk in at high time on a Saturday night and announce, "Table for ten, please."
    "Reservations?"
"Do we look like we operate with any forethought?"
    " "

Anyway, we luck convince the waittress that "Mike" won't be showing up for his reservation so she gives us the big booth.
Did we mention that we know the "Big Guys" from across the street in the News Bldg? Did it matter?
So me, Mrs. d1shima, midori7, UHFan808, A-joe, A-sports, koakane, James, Stretch, G (I think, sorry if wrong) settle in with the Birthday Boy (now a Man).

Soon after the TsaiMeister walks in to shouts and applause.
"So THIS is what this place looks like inside!"
Good thing we didn't use HIS name when trying to get a table.

    Lots of FFFF followed.

Then SteveM and Peaches showed up. Unfortunately by that time a lot of the fuud had passed the picture-taking stage but I'm sure there will be several shots that show up on SteveM's site.

So once the first round of drinks arrive, the males in the group immediately start pressuring the young tenor to begin his journey down the path of ......

(Did I mention that my 10% Kona coffee was ready now?)

Anyway, Jason does an admirable job of resisting the pressure from his "uncles" and manages to have a great time while continuing to drink his favorite beverage - water (on the rocks)!
(Although at one point, I think he broke down and actually ordered a 7up.)

    Cheers to you, Jason.

  552. d1shima [sez:]:

    Kekoa,

We kept asking the waittresses for the karaoke song books but they kept ignoring us.
That didn't stop James however. He was singing along to just about every tune that was playing anyway. Da man no need da words on da screen, he know 'em all by heart already!

  553. brew808:

Okay - last one.... this is a repeat (from yesterday) for Jason. This is the one that spurred this haiku fest:
