UH volleyball lands outside hitter

May 18th, 2008 by Stephen Tsai

The UH volleyball team’s struggles this past season can be directly related to problems in their passing game.
The solution, it is hoped, will come from 6-foot-3 Gus Tuaniga, an outside hitter from Hemet West Valley High School in California.
Tuaniga said he has accepted an offer to play for the Warriors next season.
Tuaniga also had received offers from Long Beach State, Cal State Northridge, USC and Pacific.
Tuaniga said he has “uncles and aunties and cousins” in Hawai‘i.
He visited Hawai‘i on a recruiting trip earlier this month. With UH’s tight budget, recruiting trips are offered selectively. This trip proved to be a wise decision.
“The visit made a difference,” Tuaniga said. “I liked the team and the campus.”
His father, Gus. Sr., said: “When he made the visit, he felt really comfortable with the coaching staff and the team. He liked the academics. The combination made him feel really good about his decision. His family supports him 100 percent.”
Tuaniga has grown since last year, when he was listed at 6-1. That doesn’t matter. He is a high jumper and accurate passer. Tuaniga, a former setter, has played on the Junior Olympic team.

Every now and then, restless athletic departments get the brilliant idea of doing their own broadcasts and telecasts.
The argument against such enterprises can be found on the broadcasts of the NCAA Regional softball tournament. The Mississippi State play-by-play announcer is, what, 12 years old? And Arizona State’s announcer is Mr. Roboto.
I think there are enough professionals in town who can do a superior job.

Thanks again for the hospitality from the Radford High and HHSAA staffs at last night’s state Division II volleyball tournament.
One of the best things about high school sports is a more varied concession menu. What other venues in the country sell Portuguese bean soup?

* * *

Congrats again to today’s graduates — Timo Paepule, A.J. Martinez and Jake Schkud.
“It’s exciting,” Paepule said. “It’s about time I graduated and moved on with life.”

  15. d1shima [sez:]:

    Stephen,

Did you play tour guide last night?

  16. Kekoa:

Whoa gotta show some respect. Got LV in da house dis morning…Ohio Sensei!

Attended wedding last night and took part in the traditional Banzai toast. Thought it was a bit strange because the bride & groom are Hawaiian, the parents and guests were of course - all Hawaiian. Kinda figgered the Toastmaster was at the wrong reception! The dead giveaway was when he ended with a perfect “crouching lion” pose, and then quietly exited the room - jez like Esme.

  17. gigi-hawaii ©:

    ST,

Were you at Radford last night? Just a stone’s throw from my house in Foster Village. Good thing you didn’t knock on my door cause my bathroom was a mess! lol

  18. las vegas:

    gigi,
most people close their bathroom doors

  19. al:

at least we are getting taller outside hitters. i’ve always said that we have the best six footers in the country, but, when facing the best 6′6″ hitters we are overmatched.

now if we can get a couple of 6′10″ middles……..

  20. las vegas:

    Howzit Kekoa!

No need show respect, jus’ send kala, but no coins

  21. J:

    ST,

Tried calling your oldest last night when I was on campus. Her voicemail was full; so popular that one…

as an ex-bartender, what you described was a “screwdriver”.

a sling in the tourist bars of waikiki, would be gin, sloe gin, grenadine syrup, pineapple juice, sweet/sour. maybe they add cherry brandy instead of grenadine and a dash of bitters.

  23. Stephen Tsai:

    J
    Was she in the library?

  24. bighilofan2:

    k/den,
gotta wurk so i can go play.. hiho hiho

  25. A-House:

Good morning, Tsaiko-nation, and congrats to all the UH grads - a very special day - worried about getting a job, facing life without “hiding” behind going to school - ah, yes, tomorrow will be a whole new day in your lives.

las vegas - been up since 5:30am HST - did morning exercises, started breakfast, started the laundry - just another regular Sunday at home.

  26. bonar:

    26th!

  27. Stephen Tsai:

    Did Midori7 make it home?
She was a bit sleepy at the end of Jason’s party.

  28. MeiLing:

Congratulations to ALL of the UH graduates today! And especially to any seniors who are playing softball today who are graduating. (don’t know if got any…)

    Go Wahine!!!

  29. Stephen Tsai:

Hey, hitting 26th twice is amazing.

  30. d1shima [sez:]:

    churty

  31. A-House:

Midori7 is fast asleep - don’t expect her to rise until lunch time!

  32. FloridaTed:

    Morning Tsaikos and Tsai-Meister,

Reading Ferds article today sounds sounds like JD is giving change some serious thought. Bolla should be the first to be changed, but unfortunately, Varmint Frazier pulled a fast one on us before departing. It seems Trapasso is a good Coach, but his recruiting appears to be lacking somewhat. I know Dave Shoji is an institution, but so many years and often being close with great talent, what is lacking?

  33. chawan_cut:

    SteveM,

I just saw some pics from the Bama trip the other year and I think you’re in it. Did you go? Did you have that Aloha sign with Vili’s face on it?

  34. Stretch:

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Sorry to those last night that I had to leave at TJ’s. What a bummer. I thought I had the ALL night pass but I guess it was revoked. I hope everyone had a good time and made it home safely.

Congratulations to all the UH graduates. Thank you to all the athletes who are graduating today, your hard work is allowing another to have a scholarship.

  35. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

DrDoc is off to work again - this time taking about 3,000 HI-5 cans and bottles to the recycling place in order to pay for the Pau Hana Party at Boardrider’s this afternoon after the community service project along Kapa`a Quarry Road. If you don’t have anything better to do, please join in on the fun. Work part is from 12:30 to 2 pm and Party Part is from 2:15 pm to 4 pm or thereabouts.

  36. LizKauai:

    CONGRATS, GRADUATES
:!: Timo Paepule, A.J. Martinez and Jake Schkud :!:

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

  37. Hawaiiroller:

    Morning all.

Congratulaitons to all graduates today. :)

    Happy belated to Jason.

  38. GRM:

Congratulations to all the graduates of 2008. I did that 42 years ago - 1966, at the Andrews Amphitheater. I guess I’m just an ole fut!.

  39. Wahine Fan:

Wahine volleyball has an” 09″ commitment from a 6′2 middle blocker named Kristiana Tuaniga who comes from Carson California and plays for Mizuno Long Beach Volleyball club. I wonder if she is related to Gus ?

    Link To Kristiana’s Commitment.

  40. Stephen Tsai:

If it weren’t for APRs and student loans, I think college life should go on forever.
What’s the fun in being in the real world?

  41. Stephen Tsai:

There must be a connection. Both are Long Beach-area players.

  42. myki1:

aGood morning to all!! Have missed you all, we felt lost in space. Although we had the laptop it was sooo slow that we finally gave up. Aboard ship, they charged $60. for a 100 minutes. It took at aleast 5 minutes to get to the HA site and then many more minutes to upload all their pictures and graphics, beore getting to the blog. It was very frustrating. Somehow it was fastest while we were in the midst of gale force winds and of course we didn’t feel too much like posting.

Its going to take a while to catch up with all the news. We’re especially sorry for missing Jasons BD celebration. We had every intention to join you all but after being up since 3am (HST) in Vancouver we were beginning to fade at about 10p.m. and decided to call it a day.

Hope to see you all soon and catch up.

    sjmacro and myki

  43. LizKauai:

    HI sjmacro and myki!!!!

  44. Wahine Fan:

It’s been reported that Kristiana Tuaniga is also related to former Nebraska All American Jennifer Saleaumua which I guess makes her related to former Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Dan Saleaumua who is Jennifer’s uncle.

  45. Stephen Tsai:

    Wahine fan:
Volleyball at the Tuaniga family picnics must be awesome.

  46. chawan_cut:

    Stephen,
College years were the best years of my life. I still refuse to admit I’m in the real world.

Did Leahey & Eldridge give a shout out to the Tsaikos yesterday? I dvr’d the game just in case.

  47. LizKauai:

    ok.

There once was a poet named brew,
Who enjoyed poking fun with haiku,
    While on a roll,
    He got out of control,
And soon there were more than a few!

    Brunch leftovers time:

    Leftover tortellini
pan steam/fried in leftover bacon drippings with a bit of water,
highlighted with undried tomatoes, pesto and garlic, served on a bed of spring greens with a bit of balsamic vinegar and grated cheese.

    With a freshly-roasted/ground/espressed Americano!

    bbl

  48. Wahine Fan:

Wait Stephen I’m not done….Kristiana is also related to former Wahine Carolyn Taeatafa-Hudson her auntie I believe. Carolyn Taeatafa-Hudson also coached Saleaumua at Bonita Vista High School.

  49. LizKauai:

    undried=sundried

  50. LizKauai:

    Hi Wahine Fan!

  51. LizKauai:

oooh… Check out Parker McLachlin at the AT&T Classic!!!

    GO PARKER!!!

  52. Stephen Tsai:

Nope, despite writing it down, Papa forgot to give birthday guy a shout-out.
I think it had to do with him fuming over a pitcher’s seven walks.

  53. Stephen Tsai:

OK, I’m off to hawk books at Honolulu Hale.
    Be back in a bit.

  54. addahknowjoe:

Stretch- We were all wondering what happen after your “All Night Pass Till The Sunrise” proclamation was given. Your sudden and abrupt, “Exit Stage Left” was met with bewilderment by us all.

Tell G-Nalo we go finish our discussion some other time. Infact, I’ll tell ‘um myself-

“Eh, G-Nalo, we go finish our discussion some other time.”

Man, that Jason can hang tuff through a mean birfdey bash in his honor! He stuck to his gunz and took the high road all evening. A mature gentleman well beyond his youth. Was it he who yelled a heartfelt warning to us all above the evenings blaring music and chatter, “Eh, and nobody pull a Homey tonight, alright?”

Jason, I give up- what was the answer to last nights quiz?

sjmacro and myki- Welcome back! Rest up and then share with us your adventures.

LizK- That’s a cute one of Brew (47)

ST- I agree. Perpetual student life is da bomb! Hey, any UH VB recruits this year may hold the potential of being a Katz Second Coming?

  55. chawan_cut:

    stephen,
thanks. i guess i’ll delete the recording then. i would’ve recorded it and shared it for all if he did say it.
yes, that pitcher is definitely inconsistent. from striking out the side to walking the bases full. can you blame coaching there? if the player doesn’t want to listen to advice, what can you do? (read Mr. Kaneshiro’s article covering the game in today’s paper). from a 1-hitter win a few weeks ago WITH the coach’s advice, back to his old style and the loss WITHOUT the coach’s advice last night. obviously coach is stuck in a situation. he’s limited with his pitchers with injuries, and needs to have that pitcher in his rotation.
some people think they know better. but that’s part of growing up. putting your ego on the side and knowing when to listen to others and learn.

  56. chawan_cut:

    lizk,

thanks for the heads up about parker. just turned it now. he’s 4th at -13. wow. way to go. not sure how many holes he has left.

  57. chawan_cut:

ok, its the 17th hole. just came up short for the birdie.
i’m not a golf person, but i’ll watch for this.

  58. chawan_cut:

wait, the scoreboard said he’s tied for 14th, even though he’s a stroke back. i don’t understand. maybe its because he’s almost done with his round and the other guys are still going??? no clue.
just like tennis, i have no idea how the scoring works.

  59. LizKauai:

Parker is on the 18th hole and it is his to win or lose.
He was the leader when I started watching and mad a couple of bad choices along the way.
I think nerves are playing him- he is thinking too much and too long and is indecisive- which is not good.

  60. LizKauai:

Now trying to listen to the Softball game but the audio feed is junk. I’m going to look for another.

  61. Da Punchbowl Kid:

So Jason’s purity remains intact? I hope so. I’d be very dissapointed in you older fellers if you ended up draggin the young ‘un through the mud. I’ll bet you all had fun trying. Jason is prolly at church as we speak, prayin’ for everybody’s souls. Don’t go changing Jay Boy, ahem, Jay Man, yous good just like you is. Happry Birfday again, stud.

  62. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    sixtysecund “happy” I meant.

  63. Kekoa:

Welcome back into the light sjmacro & myki!

I’m thinking we need to download your adventures to the North country ASAP at a Pau Hana somewhere appropriate. (If we wait to long, bumbye you folks goin’ fogit whah hoppen!)

With your approval, let me try get us a Nautical spot like the Waikiki Yacht Club, or Sea Breeze…where we can relax and lissen to your tales of travel and mis-adventures. I’ll run by some dates for you to consider.

  64. SteveM:

Good morning everyone. Was another late night for me since Peaches and I ate at Hungry Lion on the way home from Jason’s bash (still had the 3M bowl on my mind since the other night). One photo is posted.

Wahine Fan — welcome to the blog!

Holland America charged $100 for 2 hours!!! Fortunately the docks at QUebec and Charlottestown had WiFI right on the dock terminals. This Holiday Inn at Montreal has complementary hi-speed! The H-A connection seemed like the old 300-baud rate!

  75. SteveM:

myki — We hoping to hear from you two more along the way, however the dual browser or dual tabbed page technique I was describing to sj-macro to minimize download and page display times on ship using their satellite modems… well… just won’t work on this piece of… ahhh, this particular new, advanced, latest & greatest free beta-ware blue blog system.

The overhead seems really high despite being around the same download size (around 800K as the old blog) in order to display… or maybe the browsers are trying to figure out how to display the junk it is receiving and times out. Too many people are reported long delays even with broadband connections.

  76. LizKauai:

    Hi SteveM!

  77. al:

i tip my cap to the softball team.

in spite of all the odds against them they continued to battle througout the season and the ncaa’s. no one figured they would be playing today.

    mahalo

  78. LizKauai:

al- I agree. No shame in going down to the best pitcher in ASU history!
    http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/w-softbl/mtt/burkhart_katie00.html

  79. Stephen Tsai:

Well, that’s a shame about the loss.
At least they got an extra week to play. And they got some closure.

  80. SteveM:

Hi Liz. Sorry– I was away burning a backup CD of my iPhoto Tsai-ko pix since last Sep 2007. Thanks for the softball game coverage.

I have just taken the shrink-wrap off the Wii Brunswick Pro Bowling package and might pop it into the Wii before we head out shopping. :)

  81. LizKauai:

    Hi Stephen and Stephen!

  82. al:

this year’s softball team “woulda shoulda….but, neva”
    justine smethurst

oh well, she should be back next year.(?)

  83. LizKauai:

Well, plantar faciitis is a pain in the feet.

I have done laundry and folded clothes… toddle back and forth from the tv to my computer. Don’t feel like doing much else…

  84. chawan_cut:

Stephen, just curious, did they ever get their bracelets? I haven’t been keeping track.

  85. chawan_cut:

and what a nice day it is today finally. too bad i’m sick.

the vog was crazy the last few days.

    no vog:

    vog:
    http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a387/chawan_cut/vog02.jpg

  86. Stephen Tsai:

They did a lot for a team that lost three big players — Smethurst, Power and Tausaga.
    Plus, they lost Baughman.

  87. al:

bracelets…..an example of how slow the athletic dept has been running for awhile. those bracelets belong to the wrists of those who toiled the 2007 season. that’s two seasons ago as of yesterday.

  88. Stephen Tsai:

I guess you could say the Rainbow Wahine were one of the 32 best teams in the country.

  89. Stephen Tsai:

I do not believe they received their bracelets yet, although I’m not sure.
I’ll ask Clapp the next time I see him. He’s the administrator in charge of softall.

  90. LizKauai:

chawan_cut - my chiro says that the vog is causing a whole batch of new symptoms and new patients are more than he can handle!
Wouldn’t it me nice if the health people would issue vog warnings like they do in other places for smog warnings!
Gut check says the HVCB doesn’t want ANYTHING to scare potential visitors away.

  91. al:

chawan…..last week i was flying in from maui. a lady and her daughter from minnesota were taking a connecting flt to hnl enroute home.

when i pointed out that it was “vog” they were so astonished. they thought it was “fog”.

  92. Stephen Tsai:

    Addaknowjoe:
Yuval actually recommended an outside hitter who can bring it.
Trouble is, he’s completing work in the Israeli army, so he won’t be joining until the 2010 season. But he’s supposed to be another Katz/Theocharidis-type.

  93. gigi-hawaii ©:

is that why I have been coughing for more than 3 weeks???

  94. al:

arizona state may be the eventual winner.

it was good that the wac had all four of their teams in the finals of their regionals.

  95. gigi-hawaii ©:

Lebron James is down with a shoulder injury.

  96. al:

ummmm. gigi. you just now noticed the vog eh?

  97. gigi-hawaii ©:

Life is good. We drove and putted this morning. Getting better. Hubby’s ball goes farther than mine, way farther, past the blue flag. I should hack the ball the way he does.

  98. BG:

    A G’day to all

I can’t think of a better morning than having a leisurely (strong) cup of coffee and then taking an hour’s walk with the wifey with the vog all but gone…sweet.

Then coming back and catching up to yesterday’s and today’s posts…with all the quips, poetry, sports tracking…keeping up with Garret’s fam/business and he keeping us updated with the latest interesting tidbits from everywhere…and finding out where folks went and what happened last night. It’s so awesome to have a far flung Tsaiko neighborhood right here at my pc!

SJ and Myki - WELCOME BACK (I think…or are you still on the west coast?) I can’t wait to hear about your Alaskan adventures (I’m totally envious!).

And how fantastic is it to see the young men and women graduating and moving on to what we once were…and doing a better job, I hope! :D

    IMUA

  99. gigi-hawaii ©:

Al, I thought a virus attacked my chest.

  100. al:

i believe that the vball programs (both) and the bball programs (both) need to go back to the foreign markets for the exceptional student/athlete.

let’s face it, we have had great success, its worth the scrutiny and scrubbing of records to find those eligible. besides, this is truly paradise compared to those oppressed nations.

  101. LizKauai:

ST- I’ve been longing to hear the VB lineup announcer say something like-
Outside hitter, so and so from kubbutz ________, Israel!

gigi- Vog would be a probable cause of your… cough… no matter what brew808 thinks

  102. gigi-hawaii ©:

Looks like I cannot play return specialist at the football game on July 12. Have to be at a family celebration that day. You guys can carry on, if interested.

  103. al:

    gg
you may allergies that are being carried by the vog.

  104. gigi-hawaii ©:

I should have a chest x-ray. Aunt had one last week cause she is always catching bronchitis. Found out she has beginning stage of emphysema — she does not smoke, but her husband does.

    2nd hand smoke!

  105. al:

    return specialist?

you mean you’ll go and return all my white elephants from christmas’ past?

  106. gigi-hawaii ©:

haha Al, veddy funny! I think I meant catching the football with my muumuu!

  107. gigi-hawaii ©:

Liz, is there a cure for plantar fasciitis? Hope so!

  108. al:

aren’t return specialists the fastest and shiftiest athletes on a football team?

is kubbutz a korean village in israel?

  109. al:

    btw, what game?
i don’t know anyone going to the game? what game?

  110. gigi-hawaii ©:

yeah, I don’t think there will be a game due to lack of interest. So far, only BigWave expressed interest from the Sports Hawaii gang.

It was supposed to be a Tsaikos vs Sports Hawaii football game.

  111. Stephen Tsai:

Michael Lafaele played the entire 2006 season with plantar fasciitis

  112. Stephen Tsai:

LeBron James is what we used to call a “hog cheese.”
    C’mon, pass the ball sometime.

  113. gigi-hawaii ©:

hubby said LeBron might play for the Knicks next year. That might be interesting to see — him and new coach D’Antoni.

  114. Stephen Tsai:

LeBron doesn’t become an unrestricted free agent until 2010.

  115. al:

st…..yah. lebron with kobe on the lakers. how many hogs can one team have?

  116. SteveM:

I guess you could say the Rainbow Wahine were one of the 32 best teams in the country.

Even though we are disappointed, that is certainly a fair and accurate observation…

hubby recorded the game and is watching it now. So tell me, did the Celtics WIN?

  118. gigi-hawaii ©:

I just checked Fox Sports — celtics WON! yay for them!

But hubby wanted the cavaliers to win.

  119. al:

cmon gigi i dare you tell him the score.

  120. Stephen Tsai:

I don’t mind guys who take a lot of shots. I just wish they would limit their steps without dribbling to, I dunno, maybe four.

  121. gigi-hawaii ©:

    Al, I value my life!

  122. Ralph:

Congratulations Candace, Crystal and Allie….Happy graduation day!

  123. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Hey Stephen,
Did you read that email yet? :)

  124. wafan:

The only real “cure” for plantar facaeitis is time. There is a way to tape your foot to help support the plantar tendon — takes a lot of tape, though.

LizK, did your arch-supports arrive? I have been wearing mine for two weeks and my foot feels fine. The calf/Achellies massages really helped, too. I sure hope you feel better soon! Good thing your foot does not affect your singing voice.

  125. Da Punchbowl Kid:

I am just about to sit down and start knockin out some more, I just wanted to see what you thought about something before I proceed. :)

  126. Da Punchbowl Kid:

So is yer dotter walkin wif her class on the mainland? Is Wena there if so?

  127. FloridaTed:

    Al, (#100),

I agree with you on that one, besides, the foreigners adjust to Hawaii and being far from home much better than the Mainland Mama’s boys and girls.

  128. MeiLing:

Softball bracelets: Pomai posted a response from JD last week saying that the women would be receiving their bracelets after the NCAA games. They were going to present them after the NCAA anouncements as a last positive “atta-girl” for the season, but they got into the tournament. Way to go, wahine! So, now that they will be home soon, I suspect they will be receiving their bracelets soon.

Thanks for the Liz Show announcing, Miz Liz! You do it so much better than I do. I get too distracted at home.

  129. SteveM:

Time go eat-at-home food shopping. Countdown clock is reset and shows a long 32 days before…

Some players are from the Mainland; one from Australia.

I do not believe they received their bracelets yet, although I’m not sure.
I’ll ask Clapp the next time I see him. He’s the administrator in charge of softall.

Pretty funny that the administrator in charge of the softball team was not in Arizona with the team. I guess he got left behind so he could pass out Senior awards to the baseball team.

  132. MeiLing:

Our AZ channel 3 out of Phx is going to air a segment on the ASU-UH softball game on their Sports Show…azfamily.com, I think is their link.

  133. XxFaithxX:

I sure hope that JD does not keep the leftover admins too long. I see them still employed just to smooth over the transition and once JD gets a firm grasp,….bring in his people. At least thats what I hope.

  134. MeiLing:

#8 - Kate Robinson was the last UH player shown in the clip, striking out. Good luck to the women next year!

  135. NYUH:

Graunke went 9-for-11 with 246 yards and an interception while Jason Rivers had seven catches for 130 yards and a score and C.J. Hawthorne added nine catches for 116 yards and a score for the Warriors (6-0, 3-0 WAC), who have won all three games against Utah State under head coach June Jones.

  136. NYUH:

“When you do get opportunities in this offense, it’s going to be from long range and you’re going to have to have a leg on it,” Kelly said. “I didn’t come in having a long leg and I think that restricted the number of attempts I had when I was a freshman and sophomore. Now that my leg has grown, Coach Jones has seen the progress and he has more and more confidence in me every day.”

That was evident in the first quarter of last night’s game against Utah State when Kelly got the call for a 54-yard attempt.

Kelly nailed the field goal to tie the game 10-all, and in the process earned himself the No. 5 spot on UH’s list of longest field goals. His previous high was a 52-yarder against Purdue in 2005.

  137. jm2375:

Congratulations to the Pac-Five softball team for winning the D-II state title!! And they did it without 2 of their best pitchers, who were graduating with their fellow lab rats from University High!!

Congrats to the softball Wahine for a great season. Get um next year!

  138. Jason:

Thank you to everyone again for a great birthday. It started off with a 5:45 wake-up; the church youth all went to Makapu‘u Lighthouse for a hike, then we went to Sandy Beach for a devotional, lunch, and swim.

Treated myself to jambalaya at CPK for an early dinner before joining everyone at the baseball game. After the game, we went to TJ’s Sports Bar and Grill, across the street from the HA building. I drank water and 7-Up. :-)

I just wanted to thank everyone again for everything. I am really blessed to have such awesome friends. There are so many names to mention, I know I’ll miss some, so I won’t say any at all. But you know who you are.

And thanks to those who respected my choice not to drink. Shame on those that tried to tempt me; you know who you are! :!: ;-)

And sorry to Nanay Esme. Stephen called her and woke her up from her beauty sleep. :-D

And thanks to Stephen for some beautiful writing yesterday, for joining us last night, and for leading this great community of people. Stephen is always our MVP of the blog.

  139. Kekoa:

Well stated JaSON. You are a constant source of inteliigent, mature, reference to sports and academic information that is way beyond your years. To think of how much pure knowledge you have absorbed in your short time on this planet is truly awesome.

God has chosen a path for you, and you are “onipa’a” (steadfast) in following his light. We elders really do admire you for that.

    Many happy returns Jason.

  147. koakane™ EIS:

 good day all, sorry for da bobo guess the bbcode no work.

great time last night and enjoyed the after game bday celebration for Jas. fun time, much fuud and plenty laughter to go all with most excellent company. surprised Tsai master appeared but only added to the merry making.

by the way midor7 was taking down everybody’s bdate we may be looking at having one of these monthly. :p

meet stretch’s mom at the game and OMG  know her from way way back, very nice lady.

jason was fun all night. no matter what jas stuck to his water special but I think we finally broke me with all the fuud so he ordered a 7up. bwhaaaaa :) me think jason has been down or in these places before. he just look natural in this scene.

my shout out to the many tsaikett’s who was there last night, no matter what setting CC, tgate, EIS, SMB²C³ your presence make the evening better. ;)

    fla ted

going even a stretch beyond vball and bball. why don’t we recruit more puerto ricans? we had some success with the likes of delgado, et al.

but, wouldn’t the baseball team find some good players in puerto rico?
they speak english are still a territory of the usa. its a natural i think.
baseball is the most popular sport of puerto rico.

ah, what do i know eh.

  149. Kekoa:

Al ~ They always gave Bobby Knight fits over there in basketball too. Remember when they took the Pan AM games in a schocker from him one year, and he went beserk?!…but then he went beserk even when he’s winning. No, but seriously tho he was lucky to get out of PR alive for being such a J/A.

Maybe that’s why we don’t, he left a bitter taste in their mouth’s. I dunno…somebody bail me out here!

  150. al:

kekoa…..every man/woman digs there own grave don’t you think?

  151. al:

    gigi,

true story. a man just has a near life ending heart failure. in fact, prior to surgery, his family is told he probably won’t survive the surgery.

he awakes from the procedures. several doctor’s come to check his status/condition. they pick up the chart and the first question out of their mouths is collectively and separately,
“so mr. ____ do you smoke, drink alcohol, exercise?”

they never asked him how much or how often either.

  152. koakane™:

    HiFlyer,

I have not checked it out. According to my sourced it a new sport bar and grill that just opened a few week ago. Some company from the mainland is the owner/operator.

If you have been there we appreciate any insight.

  153. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

Couple of quick questions: I know what the term EIS means in my world, but what does it mean in the T-World?

Kekoa or SteveM: Are there going to be two, three, four or five events in August? A KK on August 9 OR August 16? Another one or pre-game rally or combo on August 29? An August 30 watch-the-game event at Murphy’s or some other friendly place? A CC while RainbowCliff is here?

  154. LizKauai:

    Holy Cow!
Checking the flights to the home games… no seats available on Hawaiian for at reasonable T-Gate arrival. I am booking everything now on Go!

I usually pay as I go, but this is calling for drastic measures. ouch!

  155. Rich2176:

    JASON - HAPPY BELATED 21st!

Congrats to all the graduates. A degree is one of the things nobody can ever take from you.

Too hot for golf this weekend. Over 100 degrees both days here. Tournament next week in Palm Desert will be brutal. Can’t wait to tee it up in the islands next month.

Is it me, or is the blog a little quicker???

  156. LizKauai:

    Hi Rich!

  157. FloridaTed:

    Al, (148),

That’s good question. I’ve asked myself that a few times, but the only thing I can think of would be travel. Not easy to get to the Caribbean from Hawaii.

  158. Rich2176:

Hey Liz - looks like you’re trying single-handidly to keep the airlines in business….lol

  159. SteveM:

Doc — the BIG Karaoke Call I am hoping for is targeted for August (16th first choice, 9th second choice, 23rd last choice). There is no guarantee it is going to happen pending location of a suitable site at low cost–the next crucial step.

Kekoa might be working on a Karaoke Call for RainbowCliff on Friday, August 29. Kekoa said that RCliff is a big karaoke fan (I have not had the pleasure of meeting him yet) so is looking at a K-call event. Location is up to him. Being the Friday before the swamp game, it would be a good rally night even though some of us won’t be here.

As for the watching the game on Saturday Aug. 30, I have a place in mind but putting out TV Tsaiko-Gate calls is not usually my speciality, so I will defer to James. :)

  160. LizKauai:

yeah, doggonit. This is no time to go out of business or raise rates. There are football games to be cheered for! (Now if only I could get our tIckets!!!)

  161. LizKauai:

    STEPHEN- question.
On the HA Warrior Beat page, why is the 2007 stuff still there? It would be nice if they posted the 2008 schedule instead. I had to reference Tombo Ahi’s webpage listing to make my plane reservations.

Sorry to hear the Wahine Warriors lost today. I hope they all get some special awards ceremony really soon so they can get their bracelets for their outstanding performance last year.

sorry Jason for being one of those ‘encouragers’, it won’t happen again.

James - in hindsight i might have shortchaned the ‘pot’? for my sake, PLEASE let Stretch know and i’ll take care of it ASAP.

    Liz:

Have you given any consideration to checking on charter flights? Are there other Warrior fans from Kaua`i who might be interested in coming to the T-Gates as well as the game?

Someone I know who flew for Aloha is seriously thinking about opening up a charter service with some of his former crew members because the demand is so high. Right nolw, they’re looking for an existing service elsewhere to come into the HI market.

in spite of playing with the dogs with the garden hose (i played, they ran) felt dizzy

Hey, we need to keep track of everyone’s birthday. So, everyone, tell me the day. I’ll log it (or SteveM will log it) and we have shout-outs year ’round.

I think Midori7 is taking dates too so I’ll sit back and note the dates in my files. Good timimg, too…this happened to me yesterday afternoon:

PEACHES: So what’s new on the blog?
STEVEM: ….Jason’s birthday. ST is asking for birthdays of everyone. Say, d1shima’s birthday is coming up real soon–Monday, I think…the 19th.
    PEACHES: Really, his birthday TOO…?
STEVEM: [pause…aiii yaah] Ah, yeah…what a coincidence!
    PEACHES: [looong silence]

Hi ST - So how many books did you “hawk”? :D

  177. BG:

    Hey Liz!

Just come in Friday night…you have a bunch of friends who will push and jostle to be first to pick you up and toss you in the top bunk! No worries!

End of a busy, but delightful day. Time to wind down and catch the news before bed time. Did I say that I’m so envious of a bunch of Tsaiko’s (like Garret and Liz) who seem to thrive on 5 hrs sleep?!! Who said we’re all created equal

    G’nite…

las vegas- re your 172 - ay-yah. otoh, it was nice to see the name of Kitanoumi again. I enjoyed watching him - especially -vs- chiyo…

BG- mahalo for the suggestion re Fridays.
But the reality is that I will be leaving the kids alone just about EVERY weekend come football season and I need to make the trips reasonably short.
…not to mention the away games!

speaking of which… Ronnie and Rob25 - I will have to pass on Fresno. Taking a week off for the Swamp and for Portland is stretching my away time to the max.

    :-(

  187. Kekoa:

Al & Brew ~ You’d be surprised at the talent there is to choose from in the Military Services. Some of the players opted to join the service out of HS for various reasons. During their service time, they are selected to represent their branch of service in all of the “Varsity” sports.

When you are selected for the All-Army team in Basketball, you do get to play against college teams around the country in exhibition games. The Marines, Navy and Air Force have the same format. They too seek the best in their branch from around the globe. When you make the tourney team, that’s when the college coaches who know where to shop can come away with a bargain.

College coaches will approach the players that impressed them, and find out how much time they have left on their service hitch before they ETS, and invite them to a tryout. They are pleased to find that some of these guys are seasoned players that in some cases still have full eligibility left and have already earned at least an AA or perhaps working on a BA while they were playing ball in the military.

There’s always a chance to uncover that diamond in the rough. Coach Nash, are ya listening?

no!!! the vog is coming back later in the week…. dang.

But if there’s no seats on Hawaiian
then she’ll have to fly in on a broom!

  193. LizKauai:

    And your little dog tooo!

Have a wonderful week ahead… keep away from da vog and’Happy Birthday to da birthday peeps!!!

Nitey Nitey and Sweet Dreams, kakou!

  194. Barry Markowitz:

Kekoa, thanks for letting Abe sing in your church tonite. He was honored to sing a solo with his Punahou Chorale at Kawaihao Church during their “Memorial”, a wonderful presentation of spiritual music. At the end Abe jumped in with all the other groups for a “chicken skin” version of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

  195. al:

    here’s a secret…..
a certain major league scout for the pacific basin, in fact, the only major league scout in this entire area with “signing authorization” told me that the puerto rican market has just never been tapped by colleges.

    regarding baseball talent.

there are two kinds of prospects. one, the kid that will sign a contract for any amount of bonus just to get a shot. usually one who will not ever entertain a college degree. two, the kid who wants an education and/or may not quite have the talent right now to be offered a contract. he may have potential with a little development.

the latter is the type of kid we could sign regardless if he resides in puerto rico or not.

    that’s my point on this.

  196. Kekoa:

Barry ~ That amazing son of yours is going to continue to make you and the Mrs. proud. Here lately, he has been showcasing his talent in areas outside of sports, and more into the entertainment field.

I still can’t get over his performance with his *seva.* That is a classic. My wife was very impressed with his performance. My grandson slapped himself silly trying to mimic his moves!

  197. Barry Markowitz:

Kekoa & SteveM, I am hoping that we can fit him in for a Karaoke Call before he leaves. He must check in to his USC Dorm on 6/22 for summer school. I don’t know if he needs to go a few days earlier for football locker and # assignment. I would sure like him to meet Rich, and let loose with the gang. I forget, can Abe get in where we are going on the 19th if my wife and I escort him?

  198. bighilofan2:

    kekoa,
i wasn’t gonna say anything until i saw your travel suggestion for LizK. ROTFLMAO

    LizK,

so i been tinkin. grope management.
    bwaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaa :D

  199. Kekoa:

Barry ~ I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t. It would be fun to have him and your lovely wife join us. Barry, the way I see it, it’s no different than when he joined us at Nancy’s after the Hula Bowl. They serve liquor, but of course we share the care in that regard.

Be sure to sign on with SteveM for official headcount. Ronnie & Rich will get a kick out of meeting him I’m sure! I let you know when and where we lock in a CC for Rainbow Cliff when he comes to town.
