Konrath will transfer

June 18th, 2008 by Stephen Tsai

Defensive end Kevin Konrath said he is requesting a release from his football scholarship. Konrath said he wishes to transfer, although he has not decided on a destination.
"It's a lot of things," said Konrath, who redshirted as a freshman last season. "I don't want to finger-point things."

Konrath, who was raised in Chicago, said he enjoyed his time at UH. He said he also wants to leave on a good note.
Konrath said he will take a summer-school class to ensure that he has at least a 2.6 cumulative grade-point average. That is the minimum GPA Konrath needs to exit without UH incurring an APR penalty.
"I want to leave the program in good standing," Konrath said. "I want them to be able to use my scholarship."

Defensive tackle Fale Laeli, who did not participate in spring training while recovering from knee surgery, is at full strength.

There are no concerns about the other No. 1 defensive tackle, Keala Watson.

And freshman Vaughn Meatoga is ready to step into the defensive tackle rotation:

Despite a busy schedule — he works two jobs — wideout Dylan Linker manages to find time for weight training. That's cornerback Jameel Dowling in the background:

well its too bad konrath is leaving. but, hey everyone has to be comfortable with their own decisions.

my hats off to him for wanting to leave on a good note. it is important these days not to burn any bridges behind you.

    best of luck!

  3. Stephen Tsai:

Yep. And it's good to make a decision early in a career. He's young enough that he can go somewhere and have a nice career.

  4. al:

i know its early but, what is the latest buzz on the recruiting trail?

  5. Ralph:

losing our future....from Alabama, Arkansas and now Illinois...what's happening! aren't these players JR's recruits? Was Mac's all positions open for competition really open to give the young guys a chance to show what they got

  6. Stephen Tsai:

    You're right. It's early.
The big fish aren't committing now.

  7. Ralph:

took me 8 minutes from the time I saw new post at 1:03 before the blog let me refresh to the new post...long loading or freezes!

  8. Stephen Tsai:

There's a lot of competition at defensive end.
The two No. 1s, John Fonoti and David Veikune, are very good.
I think Elliott Purcell is going to be very good.
    And I like Alasi Toilolo.
    Don't forget Cameron Allen-Jones and C.J. Allen-Jones.

  9. Stephen Tsai:

    Whoops.
I forgot about Victor Clore, Tua Mahaley and Bo Montgomery.

  10. HiFlyer:

ST, are these pictures from the New camera or are you still using the old one?

  13. Garret:

UH was mentioned in an article about Florida's budget.

Florida's University Athletic Association board approved an $84 million budget for 2008-09 at its meeting Monday afternoon. Although much of the figures don't matter to the fans, here are a few tidbits found in the budget materials...

**UF will pay a $600,000 guarantee to Hawaii for its Aug. 30 game against the Warriors and $450,000 to the Citadel for the Nov. 22 game. Those are one-time deals. UF will pay $400,000 to Miami when it visits Nov. 6 but likely will receive that money back when it visits South Florida in 2013. The Gators also will receive $500,000 to travel to Tallahassee, the normal bounty for the road team in the UF-FSU series.

  14. Garret:

Hi Lua! It is great to see proud Warrior parents on the blog! I wish your son well and am sure that he will represent your family and the Warriors well during his career.

  15. Garret:

This Oklahoma offensive lineman is quitting football for a very good reason.

Some Oklahoma football players might liken strength and conditioning coach Jerry Schmidt to a military drill sergeant. Now Britt Mitchell can make a first-hand comparison.

The freshman offensive lineman left the Sooners late last week and has enlisted with the United States Marine Corps, OU sports information director Kenny Mossman confirmed Tuesday.

“He has the coaching staff’s full support in pursuing something that has been attractive to him for some time,” Mossman said.

Mitchell, a 6-foot-6, 311-pound freshman tackle from Roscoe, Texas, enrolled at OU in January and went through winter and spring workouts with the team. He had begun summer training with Schmidt before deciding on a military career.

  16. Garret:

Lots of people are excited to be able to get the new UA polos and shirts for the Warriors. I wonder what the reaction will be when this clothing line comes out for UH.

The Columbus-based brand of undies, owned by Limited Brands' Victoria's Secret, is about to roll out loungewear lines offered in co-operation with 33 universities.

The University of Michigan, Harvard and UCLA are among the schools whose logos will adorn sweat pants, tank tops and panty sets. Prices will range from $25 to $55.

  17. MeiLing:

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Off to the grind.... hi ho, hi ho... Have a great day in Hawai'i Nei!

  18. bighilofan2:

    Kevin Konrath,

I would like to extend to you a sincere 'best wishes' for your future. When I was your age I was already married, had 2 children and had not yet attended college.
There have been milestones I can point to which were life changing. One was made at age 17. Another at 21.

If you've made the final decision, and It feels right for you, go for it! We'll miss you, we truly will. But we want the best for you IN LIFE. And, you being at peace with yourself is very important to your fans an comrades in Warrior Nation. Peace, Kevin!! God Bless You!! And, Good Luck!!!

    GO WARRIORS!!!!

  19. Garret:

Oregon has already pulled a written scholarship offer that a 2009 recruit accepted. This really upset the player's high school coach...I wonder if there is an opportunity for UH to recruit at that school?

A high school coach from one of Southern California’s top prep programs expressed frustration with the UO football staff Monday after the Ducks withdrew a scholarship offer that had been accepted by one of his players last week.

Todd Therrien of defending state champion Saint Bonaventure High School in Ventura, Calif., said “Oregon is not welcome here” to recruit his players after the Ducks ended their pursuit of safety Xavier Ramos on Monday.

According to Therrien, Ramos received a written scholarship offer from Oregon last week, then called UO coaches to accept it. But on Monday, Therrien said, UO associate head coach and offensive line coach Steve Greatwood, who is responsible for recruiting the region that includes Saint Bonaventure, called Therrien and rescinded the offer.

Saint Bonaventure is a private Catholic high school that won a state Division III title last fall behind running back Darrell Scott, who signed a letter of intent with Colorado. Two of the school’s alumni are currently in the Pac-10, including linebacker Dwight Roberson of Oregon State. Safety Patrick Hall made a verbal commitment to sign with USC in February of next year.

Therrien said he had “always had a high respect for Oregon and the way they handle themselves” before Monday. Clearly, that has changed.

“I don’t want to see them on campus at all,” Therrien said, assigning blame for the situation not to Greatwood but rather “the whole defensive staff” at Oregon.

Given the talent returning to the team, Huffman said, the school is expected to repeat as state champs.

“It’s not good to be on bad terms with them right now,” Huffman said.

According to the coach, Ramos received a written scholarship offer from Oregon in the mail last week, though Therrien said Monday afternoon he hadn’t personally seen it. In the world of recruiting, Therrien said, “verbal offers don’t mean anything, (but) written offers mean something.”

Therrien said Ramos has an offer from Army, and that Arizona is waiting to review his performances early this fall before deciding whether to offer. Fresno State and San Diego State have also been in contact with Ramos, Therrien said.

  20. Garret:

    Kevin Konrath,

I agree with what bighilofan2 said above. Best wishes to you in your future!

  21. Garret:

Interesting how 2 ball boys saved Michigan's national title hopes.

At home games, Datz and Mike Youtan, a senior from southern California, worked the opponents' sideline as ball boys, keeping their mouths shut and staying out of the way.

    Until the fifth game.

Northwestern had upset Michigan the previous two seasons. Now Datz and Youtan had an idea why.

"There was a guy on their sideline that day, and he had our signals down pat," Datz said. "Every time, he would scream into the defense what we're going to do -- pass or run -- and he was almost always right. ...

"They were blowing up draws, calling our counters and destroying our screen passes -- all a big part of our plays that year. I was just screaming mad. Youtan and I are thinking to ourselves, 'This guy has us.' "

The play that finally sold the U-M coaches on the need to adjust came on a third-and-25 with less than three minutes left in the third quarter. That's when U-M tailback Clarence Williams ran a sweep -- an odd call for that down and distance -- and two Wildcats grabbed him behind the line of scrimmage.

"That was what I would do," said David Hansburg, a Northwestern graduate assistant those years. "If I could see them signal in plays, I'd watch. This was no Spygate, and there was no video of anybody. I equated it to being like baseball when you've got a runner on second base; it's part of the game."

Using the naked eye to steal signals has been done for years in college football and is not illegal.

In 1995 and '96, Hansburg said, all he had to do was watch U-M center Rod Payne, a one-handed snapper who apparently placed his opposite hand on the ground for a running play and on his thigh for a passing play.

  22. Garret:

Joe Montana's son is walking on to Notre Dame. He had an impressive list of schools that were offering him preferred walk on status.

Montana's watching his eldest son, Nate -- a senior at national power De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) who will be a preferred walk on with Notre Dame this fall -- throw at the Steve Clarkson Academy and is beginning to have flashbacks.

"I think my wife was hoping they'd pick something else," says Montana, whose younger son, Nicholas, 16, will be a junior quarterback at De La Salle next season. "She kept pointing at me and saying, 'Look at your dad. Do you really want to walk like that?'"

As a third string quarterback on the varsity for his senior season, Nate was 12-of-19 for 166 yards and one touchdown and ran 17 times for 33 yards in limited action. No scholarship offers came his way, but he worked out for several schools before committing to Notre Dame over USC and Stanford. Weis -- a family friend -- said Nate would have a chance to compete for a spot on the team and earn a scholarship in the future.

  23. Garret:

Great photos from the Cattle Call yesterday! It was especially nice to see a photo of Ronnie and Rob25, as I don't think I'd seen a photo of her before.

The DoD made their proposal deadline 3am this morning...so yesterday was a hectic work day for me. I kept thinking that the deadline was June 18...but when it is 6am EST, that pretty much means that we had to finish it the day before!

  24. Loa:

    morning gang!

    Happy Belated Birthday SJ!

Liz - good luck on the procedure and get well soon

Rich - welcome home and no let Stretch sandbag you eh

    Great Morning All.

    Liz,
Best wishes and hoping everything "comes out" alright. ;-)

    Lua,
Good to see you, Ana, Ana-boy and Tui last week at Ryan's party. Tui sounds like he's adjusting well.

    Rich2176,
    Welcome HOME!

  26. bighilofan2:

    73 days to go, Tsaikos!!!!!

Proper prior planning prevents poor performance. But a winner thrives on perception and projection of the positive attitude.

A case in point is USA Today 6/18/08 running a feel good article about smu coach june jones. he projects that SMU will get a BCS invite within 5 years, and backs up his claim by stating that SMU boosters believe it too because they're paying him alot of $$ to produce a winner.

Another case in point is the UH. Noted in the blog yesterday was the USA Today article pointing out that UH is getting around to addressing the facility discrepancies made painfully evident by JJ's departure.

I would hope that the UH media relations guys can project Coach Mack samoa; a positive image about Warrior Nation so much so that there is a PERCEPTION that the Warriors are now a national power! ST throwing pix on the blogs of the Warriors working hard is a part of it. Media hype is another part of it.

If Alex Gerke is going to Samoa next week, I wanna read about it all over the place.
If Coach Mack is going too, I wanna read that too. If they're attending Uncle Meki's camp, I wanna know that. If Rich is calling all over, I wanna know that too. I wanna know dat Jimmy D is wurkin hard, had lunch wit a athlete, talkin to principals, etc.

C'mon, UH Media, yu can do itl!!!!!!! Erryday, Word!!!!!!!! I wanna read about UH from your point a view in da Tizah, SB. Yu stay on summah break o wat?? Wat yu guys spending all da $$ fo if yu not goin pump yurself up? positive projection.

  27. d1shima [sez:]:

Good Luck Kevin Konrath. Classy way to part the program. It's good to know UH initially selected someone with great character.
Hey, at least he gets a cool UH/UA shirt out of it.

  28. d1shima [sez:]:

    Howzit Loa.

    Howzit bhf2.

    Have a great day erryboddy!

  29. Stephen Tsai:

    Lua:
I thought it was your son, but they were in the middle of drills, so I didn't want to ask. All I know is I kept thinking: he looks kind of intimidating. That's a great characteristic for a linemen. It also was very humid in the gym. To be doing drills in that, well, he definitely is showing a lot of commitment.

  30. Stephen Tsai:

In case anybody is wondering, I'm still using the old camera.

  31. koakane™:

goooood morning hawaii nei and all dem early rises out dea

my added good luck to Kevin and mahalo to him for thinking about leaving UH on a good note.

Lua. he is james favorite player :)

  32. Kekoa:

Wow Garret, you are burning rubber on these proposals. One day, me and you gotta have a serious talk about these things. I'm very interested in what your strategy is, as it may help to refine mine for gov't contracting.

...and yes, the pictures of Ronnie & Rob25 really doesn't do them justice. The inner glow of Warrior football fanatics burns brightly within, visible only when they speak of all things Tsaikotic...It's just difficult to hear them with all that grinding' noise they make...Bwhahahaha!

  33. Kekoa:

ST ~ Weren't you supposed to make an announcement of some kind?

  34. bighilofan2:

    Howzit d1shima.

Thanks for your time here, and best of luck in the future. One day the historical reference to this past season will rekindle great memories.

    kekoa,

thanks for warning them, his coach has been calling almost daily to check on his arrival. poor guy, he lands at 1 pm Utah time and has to take a placement test at 3 pm. tomorrow afternoon are 2 more placement tests and then in the weight room, then drills. the placement tests are to determine his aptitude in math, reading, and english, and if he does well, he can 'hurdle' some of the lower classes and get credits already.

sept 6th will be here sooner than we think, and we look forward to seeing all of the Tsaikos at Tsaiko gate at Richardson :):):)

    Imua Warriors, Imua Wildcats !!!

Seriously speaking tho, UH apparel should be more diverse for the Wahines. I have seen a few items geared towards the female fans but I can only think of a few items I can count on one hand.

  55. Kazz:

    Ah Bulla,

Good to see Da Beast has landed safely!

I no can imagine what it must be like to see a beloved son leave da nest and move on in life, but at the same time I hope to experience the pride you and da mrs and the entire Eastman clan feel to see your own blood LIVING THE DREAM!!!

  57. Jayson:

    Aloha everyone! It's hump day!

  58. Kekoa:

Bulla ~ Have Ryan fax you a copy of what they ask him to fill out for credits. There are lots of things he learned at St. Louis (and in camps/seminars/etc.) that he won't think is relevant, but by broad definition is worth credits. Most counselors will explain that to them, but maybe they don't have dat kine ovah deah!

    yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwn

  86. jm2375:

    Good morning!

Welcome home Rich and Ronnie (sorry so late  )

DPK - have fun at the dentist ...

    Stretch - back to work!

  87. Garret:

Seriously speaking tho, UH apparel should be more diverse for the Wahines. I have seen a few items geared towards the female fans but I can only think of a few items I can count on one hand.

    Kazz,

I agree with you. The product line from the article included sweat pants and tank tops, which would be nice additions to the college-themed apparel lines. Plus, the University gets money with each item sold, which is nice.

  88. UKU@LA:

go warriors! howzit rich! have fun! K!!
    aloha everyone!

    MANEO !!!

  89. Garret:

Wow Garret, you are burning rubber on these proposals. One day, me and you gotta have a serious talk about these things. I’m very interested in what your strategy is, as it may help to refine mine for gov’t contracting.

    Kekoa,

I'd love to talk with you someday about our government contracting. Right now my company actually doesn't have any money coming from defense sources, as we targeted other agencies first. But the proposal to the Army went out yesterday, I'm sending out my MILCOM Conference paper today, and I'll be submitting a proposal to the Navy tomorrow...so we're going after defense stuff now.

  90. (Jesse) James:

    Kazz...

I also think the Wahine market would be a good niche to hit.

  91. A-House:

    Firstist:

Best wishes to Kevin as his journey takes him away from Hawaii - hope you will be able to carry on the aloha and ohana spirirt where you go!!

    2ndst:

    belated happy birthday to Jerry!!

    3rdst:

    welcom home, Rich!!

  92. Kekoa:

Garret ~ The Navy's Defense FORCEnet is the key to the Navy's effort. Will you be sending your proposals to San Diego, Charleston, New Orleans, or the Washington Liaison Office? If you are I can introduce you to the SPAWARSCOM/PEO C41 & SPACE PROGRAM Director. As you know Fleet Support is broken down into 5 major components, and she would be able to hook you up with the key personnel in each.

What's all this got to do with football? She is a big college football fan, and actually followed Colt and the UH team last season. Wants to get to know Hawaii even more because of this increase in Defense spending at Pearl, and is actively seeking businesses to deal with. Drop me an email if you want her contact numbers.

  93. SteveM:

Good luck to Kevin Konrath and mahalo for his consideration in attempting to exit in good academic standing.

Quiet day? The lull before the storm of fuud, FITTO, FITTO, fuud, FITTO, fuud....
I'm working today since I've arranged to be off on Friday. :|

  94. C-CPPR/HB/HA/WB:

    Attention Kekoa,

  95. Jon:

    Kazz:

check out http://www.uhrainbowtique.com. Get plenty stuffs for wahine. I know cause my wife has most of it!

  96. Dennis Halloran:

Just so you know, the tribute to the Late Tim Russert on MSNBC had three musical tributes at the end, Uncle Tony, a guitarist, followed by The Boss on tape from Europe and the very best at the end, Izzy singing and playing 'Over the Rainbow" on the UKE.

  97. chawan_cut:

    wow, kekoa has the hookups!

  98. Rob25:

    Good Afternoon Tsaikos!

OK, at least I get a break before we go again tomorrow night.

First, let me say hello to Brew808 and LizK (just finished catching up from yesterday).

Thanks for the shout out Kekoa.

Koakane...I wasn't scared to jump in with you guys....just had to get out of the way after a little while. Those chopsticks were flying fast and furious. The three of you were there...then you were all gone...then you were back and the smoke was fluming off the grill. It was getting scary. Homey definitely can put one under a spell with his chopsticks mastery!

Great company...smelled like smoke when I was done, but it was a nice time to talk with some wonderful people. And the memories of Kamehameha Schools, not to mention talking to that local newsperson....thanks ST!

    Welcome home Rich.

Happy belated Birthday sjmacro! We could have sung for you yesterday!

    Speedy recovery Liz!

  99. Kazz:

    Pauoa Boy,

I haven't tried any other protein shakes other than Muscle Milk but from the notorious rep they had of tasting "awful", Muscle Milk is probably the best tasting one on the market.

I've tried Cookies N' Creme, Chocolate, Vanilla Bean, Strawberry and Banana and they are all good, better with milk but just as good mixed with water, less calories also.

  100. Rob25:

    chawan_cut: You know dat!

See homey...I don't always speak good english.

  101. Kazz aka Officer Sherman Botello Jr. III:

Kekoa, I agree, you was da perpatraytah in da vacinity of da seen whea u waz all posting da kine wen was kapu.

  102. Kazz:

    RE: Wahine UH gear...

Thanks for the heads on the da Wahine gear. I guess there was more than I thought.

Would be nicer to see more ladies around with it on...

Makes for a good "ice breakah"

  103. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Whew,
Just back from the dentist. What an experience. I was laying there floating along in a nitrous oxide (laughing gas) cloud, while the dentist scraped and cleaned my teeth below my numbed out gum line, as the song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot plays on the muzak speakers. I can't recall the last time I've had so much fun. :)

  104. Kazz:

DPK is known for being a strong supporter of public transportation as he is "ALL BUS"!

  105. Stretch:

    Good Afternoon Tsaikos!!

Good Luck to Konrath and thanks for fulfilling your education requirements.

Re: Konrath & APR - How come when Knorath leaves in good academic standings, it doesn't affect the APR?? Is it only 1 point rather than 2?? I thought there were players who transferred out in good academic standing but it cost us scholies?? Does someone know the scoop?? Not saying this is a bad thing at all, still trying to figure out this whole APR deal.

  106. Pauoa Boy:

Kazz - Yeah Muscle Milk is the best tasting stuff out there, the good thing is it doesn't make you bloated like most other protein drinks. The Muscletech, Myoplex, etc...taste like crap and doesn't dissolve when you mix em like Musclemilk. I've tried my share of those but I figure au-natural is the way to go.

  107. homey ®:

Good luck Konrath in whatever path you take and the journey it takes you on.

Rob25 - I'm impressed with the vocal qualities of the Kamehameha grads...unlike the Damien grads who make me think I'm back in Waipahu.

Stretch - Next time pay attention and comprehend when the blog host post how the APR works. *when you figure it out can you let me know*

Is it Thursday, 8:00 p.m. yet?

Tiger won! Celtics won! What's the correlation?

I told you Kekoa is like the Godfather...

  108. homey ®:

I can't believe DPK needed NO2 just to clean his teeth. wah wah

  109. homey ®:

Musclemilk? Does that mean in a few months we'll see a mean lean muscled Kazz machine? He may have to step up and get a large UA polo shirt just to fit that barreled chest and canon arms of his! He's konna trive ta Tsaikettes wild!

  110. gigi-hawaii ©:

I have never tried laughing gas and don't think my dentist even offers it. I'll ask him next month when I go in for my annual exam and cleaning.

I think Tiger was outta his mind to play last weekend -- with a bum knee and a fracture on his tibia no less.

  111. (Jesse) James:

    Yeah...tigah was crazy..$1.2 million crazy....

  112. homey ®:

gigi - laughing gas can make your Hyundai go faster.

You may think that Tiger was outta his mind but that's what athletes do. Pain is a minor obstacle when it comes to the competitive juices.

Look at all the UH athletes who endured pain to play.

As for me, I'll just sit on my cooler and have a beer...

  113. gigi-hawaii ©:

yeah, Tiger will be out for the rest of the season. Crazy, ya?

  114. homey ®:

(Jesse) James - I don't know if anyone asked but do you have a brother named Frank and are you in a gang?

  115. gigi-hawaii ©:

speaking about pain, hubby was outta his mind too. He walked 3 miles to Ginza and then 3 miles back to the hotel. Took him 1-1/2 hours each way and he spent just 1 hr in Ginza. As a result, his big toe began to bleed and stain his sox. Ewww.

Good thing I had some bandaids.

  116. homey ®:

gigi - regardless, Tiger would still require surgery sooner or later so I think it was best that he won our nations golf tournament and sit out the rest of the season.

  117. gigi-hawaii ©:

well, let's hope Tiger hasn't damaged his knee permanently.

  118. homey ®:

gigi - He took 30 minutes to walk a mile? Must've been something real special in Ginza!

So back in the day did you have bandaids as you were walking with Jesus?

  119. gigi-hawaii ©:

    haha, ask Jesus!

  120. homey ®:

gigi - Nah, ACL surgery is duck soup nowadays.

  121. SteveM:

So let me get this straight... Stretch and gigi had a bet on the Lakers-Celtic championship outcome and gigi won.

The wager was a dinner at Camellia?

In any event--gigi winning bets for Camellia is a disturbing trend... :)

  122. gigi-hawaii ©:

SteveM, NO NO NO!!!! STRETCH OWES ME DINNER AT CLUB GENJI.

  123. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    homey,
Ya lil instigator! It was what they call "deep scale cleaning", below the gum lines and it required numbing of the gums. I didn't ask for the NO2, my excellent dentist strongly suggested it. If yer masochistic lil self wants to do such things with out NO2, well that's fine, whatever blows ya little skirt up. Otherwise why don't ya just keep yer lil cake and kalbi hole closed!

  124. gigi-hawaii ©:

hmmm, DPK doesn't sound like he's laughing right now. lol

  125. Pauoa Boy:

Das okay Tiger hurt, he get enough money for support himself for 2 or 3 lifetimes, sheesh

  126. Stephen Tsai:

OK, how did Stretch end up with two tickets to the Hooters' Bikini Show tonight?

  127. Stretch:

SteveM - the bet was $21 for dinner tomorrow night, but since the fee is $25 and I am such a nice and generous guy, I'll take care of it. Hubby is on his own. It's a shame that gigi will not be able to take home a Tsaiko shotglass since she is too chicken to drink Crown

  128. Stretch:

    ST - sssshhhhhhhh......

  129. Stephen Tsai:

When we do our cook book, we definitely need a recipe for duck soup. I hear it's easy to make.

  130. gigi-hawaii ©:

good question, Tsai. So is the 2nd ticket for Stretchette???

  131. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    homey = -------> :evil: <---------

  132. homey ®:

gigi - I'm picturing DPK saying his #123 post in his duck voice.

  133. Da Punchbowl Kid:

  134. whitey:

gigi, tiger had no choice since he made fun of hockey players and they responded by telling him that his injury is minor. hockey players get concussion, beat up, broke bones, but play the next night and golfer get minor surgery and complain about pain. now tiger know, no make fun of other sports cause they can come back and haunt you.

  135. homey ®:

DPK - did the dentist have to use 2 masks?

  136. gigi-hawaii ©:

Can't Stretch be a nice and generous guy and drink the CR for gigi?

  137. Da Punchbowl Kid:

lmao@homey. Now THATwas FUNNY ya lil sado-masochistic intstigator!

  138. homey ®:

ST - #129...I get it!

  139. gigi-hawaii ©:

whitey, men! I am sure glad I am not a man!

  140. homey ®:

gigi - tell hubby to drink your CR! That'll make him grow some hair on his chest.

  141. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    instigator I meant. (reffering to homish's 132.)

  142. gigi-hawaii ©:

hubby won't be drinking cause he has to drive and he also wants to be awake at the gym.

  143. homey ®:

DPK - see you tomorrow...

  144. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Homey, thank you. Me too, finally.

  145. Stretch:

Can’t Stretch be a nice and generous guy and drink the CR for gigi?

Nope since Stretch is nice and generous enough to make the shotglasses for the Tsaikos.

  146. SteveM:

Stretch -- we have the Matsu room for overflow/storage tomorrow so gigi can take a nap there if she has tries too hard. Even has room for someone who coming to lead the 2nd shift... :)

  147. homey ®:

gigi - when are you leaving Genji's?

  148. Stretch:

    homey ®:
    June 18th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
gigi - when are you leaving Genji’s?

she is leaving 5 minutes before you come.

  149. homey ®:

SteveM - They may have to change the name of the room to the "homey" room.

  150. Stretch:

Hey, isn't UH celebrating it's centennial anniversary?? maybe the students need to follow what they do in the Philippines.

    http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080618/BREAKING/80618036

  151. gigi-hawaii ©:

I dunno. I was thinking of leaving around 8 pm but it depends on hubby and how tired he is.

  152. homey ®:

Thanks Stretch, I'll be there at 5 after gigi.

  153. Stretch:

    homey ®:

SteveM - They may have to change the name of the room to the “homey” room.

I'll make sure I put in a rubbish can with plastic bag liner.

  154. Stretch:

homey - you can actually show up anytime, I bet gigi will not even show up.

  155. whitey:

This is a direct quote from Mike Milbury, former NY Islander general manager, with an angry response to Tiger Wood's remark that "I don't think anybody really watches hockey anymore".

"I'm gonna change the name now. It's going to be "Tiger Wuss". Here's a guy (who) took about three months to get over a simple arthroscopic surgery. You look at (Pittsburg Penguin forward) Ryan Malone. His face exploed with a slap shot ..... and he's back out in 10 minutes".

from Golf World magazine, June 13, 2008.

  156. whitey:

    exploed = exploded

  157. homey ®:

I don't think anyone answered this before but what do psychiatrist say about people who refer to themselves in the third person?

  158. (Jesse) James:

DPK - Homey wears a skirt??? I didn't know he was Scottish??? As the Chinese say, "Be A Man!!! No Gas!!!" MWAHAHAHAHAA

homey - Yes, I do have a brother named Frank...and we run the James' Gang...James, jojo, jeje, juju, joje, and jason....MWAHAHAHHAHA

  159. (Jesse) James:

gigi...yes, we had bandages when I walked the Earth 2000 years ago....

  160. homey ®:

Stretch - I can just picture Jason running buck naked and screaming on campus...and he'll probably blame the cool Manoa air.

  161. Stephen Tsai:

Only those with a bonafide shot glass are allowed to chit-chat.

  162. gigi-hawaii ©:

SteveM, you said parking is available after hours. Is that after 5 pm?

  163. (Jesse) James:

homey - James says that James thinks that psychiatrists call those people crazy....although James could be wrong.

  164. (Jesse) James:

Hey, hey....I'm not gonna stand for any more of this chit(chat)....LMAO

  165. Stephen Tsai:

The James Gang was a '70s rock band that once included Joe Walsh.

  166. (Jesse) James:

gigi...no parking...but buses will be running every half hour from Foster Village....MWAHAHAHAHAHHA

  167. (Jesse) James:

ST...Joe Walsh?? "Life's Been Good To Me" Joe Walsh?? From the Eagles???

  168. Stephen Tsai:

    Gigi:
Do NOT think that parking will be easy. There are about 4 1/2 stalls (one is next to a Dumpster). This isn't Ward Centre.

  169. A-House:

    bighilofan2:

what is your ETA at Genji's tomorrow night?

  170. Stephen Tsai:

    Re: Joe Walsh.
Would I lie? C'mon. Look at me. Are these lying eyes?

  171. homey ®:

WHOO HOO! I have a bonafide shot glass AND the special one! Not to mention a truck bed stained t-shirt also! WOOT WOOT I can bull chit all day!

Now about those d-lineman. How many of them have surpassed the 400# barrier in the bench press? I know it's not a direct correlation to athletic ability and trench warfare technique but sometimes we just want numbers.

  172. gigi-hawaii ©:

how about if I park at Times, enter the store, buy a bottle of water, and then saunter over to Gengi?

  173. Stephen Tsai:

So, I'm supposed to be hanging out with Rich2176.
I call him. He's hemming and hawing.
Then I hear the whoooosh of wind.
Turns out he's on a golf course.
    The nerve.

  174. Stephen Tsai:

    Re: "Saunter over..."
Ever hear of the game Frogger?

  175. Rob25:

    homey-

You are in rare form today....gotta chuckle.

Who sent you out to hunt piranha?

You know that's the deadliest catch!

  176. homey ®:

(Jesse) James is the new kid in town so he wouldn't know.

  177. whitey:

i can see the primates are getting ready for tomorrow night and it will be nosy. no, no, no, noisy! ST, why don't you invite Derrick (UH) for the tribal get together tomorrow night. BHF2, would be very happy.

  178. Rob25:

If I'm bringing one of the "honored" guests, do I get a reserved parking spot?

  179. gigi-hawaii ©:

  180. (Jesse) James:

Homey...well, I do live life in the fast lane since life's been good to me so far.......

  181. Da Punchbowl Kid:

*DPK wonders what homey's #157 means.

  182. homey ®:

Rob25 - You should of seen me at the Karaoke call, that was a rare form. Damn Stretch has pictures on his cell phone too!

  183. (Jesse) James:

and homey, if you have one too many CRs tomorrow night, you may be facing another tequila sunrise....mwahahahhaha

  184. Stephen Tsai:

The team hasn't tried maximum benches since March.
    But here were the numbers:
    David Veikune — 455
    R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane — 455

  186. homey ®:

(Jesse) James - Woah...slow down...take it easy...bumbai you end up with one witchy woman.

  187. (Jesse) James:

Stretch - Did you make more "special" shot glasses for gigi, Ronnie, and Rob25 to take shots out of??? You know, the shot glasses where they yell, "Look ma, no hands!!!" BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  188. Stephen Tsai:

    Yeah, don't be a desperado.

  189. homey ®:

ST - interesting that most of them are the DEFENSE! Yeah babee!

  190. (Jesse) James:

homey - Witchy woman?? Oh well, maybe one of these nights....

ST - Those are some impressive bench press numbers. Although I've always been more of a believer in greater lower body strength and stability for strong defensive players.....

  191. Stephen Tsai:

And in a setback for guys like Homey ...
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/17/AR2008061702719.html

  192. homey ®:

Just for that, If I get a chance to sing I'll have James sing an Eagles song for me. If not Bon Jovi "livin' on a prayer" will do.

  193. (Jesse) James:

homey and ST - Not a desperado...but if I were to get a witchy woman, I would take it to the limit...than have a peaceful easy feeling since I never had a wasted time with her....MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  194. Stephen Tsai:

  195. Rob25:

I love Bon Jovi...I was doing a "homey" last time I saw them in concert at the Blaisdell.

  196. Stephen Tsai:

My favorite Bon Jovi song is "I'll Be There For You."
    I'll be there for you
these five words I'll say to you ...

  197. whitey:

JJ, maybe got to get the strong kind bottom legs like las vegas. i can see, guest coach at UH, las vegas, will be teaching the fundamentals of how to plant your feet and legs (like sumotori), so no can get knocked over.

  198. Rob25:

    Jesse..er...James

That's a piece of cake for Ronnie and me. We didn't even need glasses...no time in between classes.

Did I just say that out loud?

You guys are such a bad influence!

  199. homey ®:

ST - Shirtless is rare for me...only when I shower or sleep. Now Koakane is another story. Word is that he goes shirtless in the center field fan section when he watches HPU play at Han's L'Orange.

When you breathe I wanna be the air for you
    I'll be there for you...

I actually like "Wanted Dead of Alive" especially when I'm riding my motorcycle.

  203. WarriorMojo:

Rob25, can you email me at WarriorMojoRocks at gmail dot com regarding which game DVDs you wanted? I know I owe you some from last year. Looks like I'll be able to make it tomorrow night so I can deliver to you.

  204. (Jesse) James:

    Rob25....MWahahahahaha

I think when you see the glasses I'm talking about, you'll have a laugh.... :-)

Homey - Yeah, but koakane usually doesn't know he's on the field...BWAHAHAHAHA

    KK - one word, "TUI"

  205. Rob25:

no worry Homey and Addahknowjoe, i stay away from the karaoke screen this time, promise.

  222. jojo ®:

Has anyone ever noticed that it always looks like Keala Watson is always in a good (happy) mood? He must know the secret to the good life.

  224. g-nalo:

g-nalo - no worries, I’ll lip sync with you. But then again Waimanalo Blues is soooooo inviting.

my bad the last time, i'm SUPPOSED to lip sync and leave the singing to you and 'Joe'. please do sing Waimanalo Blues, always good stuff.

looking forward to attending a Tsaiko event once more...........i think?

  225. homey ®:

jojo! I thought you were on vacation? good to see your name in a comment box!

  226. Rob25:

OK back to the sports guys!

Does anyone know if they will be having an unsupervised workout tomorrow? Or should Ronnie and I just wander over to Coach Mack's office?

hey now, my thoughts are as clean as DPK, no innuendo on that one. fo reel

SteveM, you said parking is available after hours. Is that after 5 pm?

I did check the King Street parking this morning. Tow Away Zone from 3:00-6:30 PM. OK to park after that. Street parking from Washington Middle School to McCully. Both sides of street. I am not familiar with the parking situation at Times or Young Street.

Genji has 10 permanent stalls and more stalls open up as the 2nd floor businesses in the building close for the day (except Sanoya). Same is true for other businesses but they close later. I would also look along nearby Algaroba street heading toward Washington school.

  231. homey ®:

I'm sure ST can find out if there is U.P. tomorrow.

  235. Rob25:

g-nalo - I was j/k. Didn't mean to insult with my response. At the last Bon Jovi concert I went to I started drinking in the parking lot and the rest of the night was a blur. That was the best concert though! I would love to see them again and my fave song is definitely "Wanted Dead or Alive" because of the acoustic sound.

  236. January Jones:

    gigi HOT

  237. Rob25:

homey - We'll just hang out there and see what happens. Ronnie wants to go to see some of the players. Scouting!

Maybe we can sneak her into Mack's office or Donovan's so that she can talk to him about streaming live on the internet.

  238. homey ®:

I don't see why OC16 can't stream the games on the internet. They already do that with HS games.

WM is going! I can hear American Woman in the background…

homey: WarriorMojo's signature song is "Back in the USSR"-- he's real good.

g-nalo you probably OK for the buffet since Al usually orders extra just in case.

What time are you coming, WarriorMojo?

  241. Rob25:

homey - she wants to see the clinics and spring/fall camps streaming. She already contacted HawaiianTelCom about that. They can only do what is televised.

Hey then they could stream the Tsaiko tailgates and CCs!

  242. homey ®:

g-nalo - If I was you I'd still watch my back. Some people you never know...

  243. Kazz:

    Bon Jovi?

Oh they were the folks that had their tunes released on those shiny disks right?

"Wanted Dead or Alive" was one of the first songs I learned to play on guitar.

"Livin' On A Prayer" will forever be a karaoke classic. Gotta get multiple involved on the chorus tho!!!

  244. Rob25:

Whatever homey....I'm gonna take down your server!

  245. Kazz:

    Oooohhhhhh 3 months we're there!!!!

    OOOOOOHHHHHHHHH!!!

    GATORS BEWARE!!!

  246. Rob25:

KAZZ - you play Guitar Hero?

    hehehe

  247. homey ®:

Rob25 - I think Ronnie is out of luck. Someone like XLiz would have to video it and then host it somewhere.

Speaking of XLiz, hope all is well or will be well! I wonder what type of procedure you are getting??? I'll take a guess...hair removal.

  248. Rob25:

    Nice ad lib KAZZ

And I thought that ST was the poet.

  249. homey ®:

Kazz - Last KC I went to James was Jon Bon Jovi and me, A-Joe, and g-nalo sang the chorus. I lip sync'd though...

  250. Rob25:

homey - You are lucky that Liz isn't reading this right now! You rascal buggah!

  251. SteveM:

Kazz -- you play geeetar? How come you never came to a karaoke call? Most players sing...well, except me... but the first song I learned how to play was "Today and "Pipeline", followed by "House of the Rising Sun through "Light My Fire".... Hmmmm, guess what decade that was :)

  252. homey ®:

Guitar Hero III no more Bon Jovi... :x

  253. Rob25:

BTW KAZZ thanks for bring up the ladies apparel.

I don't think that they offer enough either.

There are a growing number of women who are following all of the sports.

I had a baaaad experience with scooter once. Changed my life. Besdies, I won't have to chase homey. Just wait until he's had a couple of shots of CR.

  258. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Rob25,
You can win a battle with homey but you'll never win the war. Take it from one who's learned.

  259. Rob25:

Obi Wan (ie DPK) you're here to save the day!

  260. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Some great numbers on the lifts. How common is it to find an RB who can run as fast and squat as much as Heun?

  261. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Don't worry Rob, homey won't be here much longer. He has to go to work soon. We'll be safe then. ;)

  262. homey ®:

    thanks SteveM!

extra's? ok i'll sacrifice and make up for the women who no eat. :-)

  265. Kazz:

    Rob25,

Exactly, with over 100 Wahines showing up for Coach Heather McMackin's Clinic, it is a testament to what is happening and what is happening is awesome!!!

BTW, are any of the Tsaikettes attending this?

  266. Kazz:

    RE: Bench Press

Wow Veikune is killing it there!!!

Suprised to see that Q. Beaver's stats are not like this:

    Q. Beaver - Bench Press Weight Max = All of Polynesia

  267. Kazz:

    SteveM,

Yeah I first learned to play guitar in my sophomore year of high school.

But I can't make it to most of the karaoke calls, it just coincides with other weekend things planned before and weeknights are pretty much out of the question. I am not really a weekday person for going out and stuff. I am a light sleeper and I have been trying to make sure my gym routine stays consistant plus getting off late and working early the next day does not help much.

BUT I'll stop by for a bit tomorrow night to say hi and to drop off Liz's things. Probably won't be until after 7 or 8 at the latest tho, but I hear y'all will be keeping the place open till midnight!

  268. Rob25:

KAZZ - I think that I read the other day that there were a couple of them attending.

I'm going to see if I would, but then again I think that I know more than basics. I could be wrong and think that I know more than I really do. LOL

  269. Kazz:

    Rob25,

I think it will be ok for those that already know the X's and O's and if they have it like the previous coaches clinic, there may be a part of the clinic where everyone will get a chance to share ideas or ask questions about things they we're 100% sure on.

With the Mack Pack in charge of this, they will for sure make it a good time for all.

  270. Barry Markowitz:

Rich, If the Markowitz Family pops up in the red zone next to Genji at 6:30pm tonite can you say hi/bye to Abe (as you will be LA brothers soon)? I hope I can find a designated handicapped parking so Abe can come in for 5 minutes to say hi/bye to everyone. Cheers, Barry

Mahalo ST, I am a tad bit frazzeled today...found out Abe's last school forgot to send out his final transcript...and he arrives tommorow at 8:30am. They worked things out with SC a few hours ago. Can you call Rich and ask him if he could meet us at the 7/11 on Wilder at 6:30pm (near Punahou), if he doesn't have dinner plans at that time? By the way Rich, if you are online, my Dad just called from the hood and said it was 113 degrees in the West Valley (Woodland Hills) today. So lucky you hang out in Hawaii this week. Wow, almost did a premature Genji...how embarassing...but maybe I could have found a parking spot.

  294. Kekoa:

British bookies are one of the happiest groups about how Tiger will miss the rest of the golf season.

Hours before the announcement, the William Hill bookmaker spokesman Rupert Adams jokingly had told interviewers his office would feel "very relieved" if Woods "decided to take the rest of the year off."

That's mainly because of a specialty William Hill offered, allowing punters to bet early in the year on Woods winning all four golf majors. It started at 50-1 and got enough play to drop to 8-1, then to 4-1 after Woods didn't win the Masters and William Hill changed the bet to three majors.

Had Woods won the British Open and the PGA Championship, the single hit would have run about $400,000.

"I feel guilty having said it now," Adams said Wednesday night. "Obviously when Tiger goes in for any major tournament and wins, the bookies as a whole take an absolute hammering."

  342. Garret:

The Big East is no longer affiliated with the Texas Bowl--that doesn't surprise me because they had 7 bowl spots and just 8 teams in their conference. C-USA took the Big East's spot. Interesting that Navy is the backup option if the Big 12 doesn't have enough bowl eligible teams for all of their spots (which happened last year).

The Big East Conference has parted ways with the Texas Bowl and will be replaced by Conference USA the next two years, a college football official said Wednesday.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because a formal announcement will be made today, said the bowl also has reached an agreement to add independent Navy. The Big 12 Conference will remain affiliated with the bowl.

The date of this year's game has been changed to Dec. 30 at Reliant Stadium.

  343. Garret:

Article about why coaches and Presidents of BCS schools prefer the current system over a playoff.

"I know eventually because of public pressure and economics that we probably at some point in time are going to go to some kind of playoff system," Mangino said. "But I hope it doesn't affect the bowls. I think the bowls are unique to college football."

In May, conference commissioners from the Big 12, Big East, Big Ten and Pac-10 announced there would be no vote on the plus-one proposal by Southeastern Conference commissioner and former BCS coordinator Mike Slive. The SEC and the ACC were the only leagues willing to continue the discussion.

So what's standing in the way?

Primary among the reasons presidents have given in the past is academics. More specifically, final exams occur in mid-December, when a playoff system would begin. Players preparing for a bowl a month down the road study just fine with a week off from football; if they had to begin weekly game prep immediately, taking finals would be much tougher.

And while teams from the NCAA's lower divisions do compete in playoffs each mid-December, the money those schools earn from their playoffs is infinitesimal compared to the bowl payouts and postseason television contracts. Bowl Subdivision presidents see no reason to make their student-athletes work that much harder for minimal financial gain.

"If you think the playoff system is going to be fun for the kids, except for the team that wins the final game, we'd all be kidding ourselves," Patterson said. "You're talking about six hard days of work, we let them take one day off, somewhere we'll work finals in between all of it, and then yeah, (one team will) end up as the national championship winner, but there's not going to be anybody else happy."

  344. Garret:

The guy who wrote about superconferences (UH to the Pac-16) wrote another article.

Yes, I believe there will be some movement in conference affiliations over the next five years, leading toward at least a limited playoff system, perhaps as soon as 2016.

No, I do not believe the specific team lineups I presented in that column. Those were simply one scenario of literally hundreds one could come up with if you want to play czar. And if you focused solely on what team was where, I hope you did not miss the point: That key economic factors are lining up that could push us toward the playoff system and the superconference model. And that the reasons this has not already occurred -- and they are some good ones -- will be overtaken by the compelling reasons to do it.

Presidents may feel differently after a few years of their budgets being battered from all sides. If the steady stream of bad economic news for universities does not improve (do a Google search on university budget cuts and you will be reading for days), it may actually be irresponsible of the presidents if they DO NOT grab the playoff money and the TV dollars that the superconference model could generate.

When conferences earned the right through the courts to negotiate their own TV deals in the 1980s, it changed the dynamics of college sports. The most recent Big Ten, SEC and ACC expansions were all driven primarily by TV. If the leagues become network owners, their quest for market share, tier positioning and access to homes likely will become even more predatory.

The median net loss for a Division I-A athletic program was more than $7 million per year in 2006, according to the NCAA, with only 19 of the 119 I-A programs showing a net profit. Even many of the BCS schools subsidize athletics despite their football programs generally being profitable. Two primary factors drive a looming financial crisis for all athletic departments: Travel costs and scholarship costs. Dramatic increases in these essential expenditures -- thanks to rising gas prices and tuition increases -- threaten to balloon those subsidies and will put political pressure on adminstrations across the country. If the economy does not improve, conference moves may be seen as answers to revenue questions.
