Next stop: (Western) Samoa

July 1st, 2008 by Stephen Tsai

After a long discussion with Jesse Sapolu, Greg McMackin has decided to visit (Western) Samoa in early 2009.
McMackin said he believes the independent state of Samoa, which is a 2-hour flight from American Samoa, has several athletes with Division I-A talent.

* * *

The SMU-UH goodwill trip to American Samoa was successful in many ways. Too often, coaches go to the U.S. territory solely for recruiting purposes. This time, the group of coaches went there to help, delivering medical supplies and teaching a two-day clinic.
The tour and the preceding golf tournaments on Kaua‘i and Kona gave closure to last year’s coaching staff. With the chaos surrounding June Jones’ sudden departure to SMU (followed by the departure of four UH assistants), there was little time for a proper goodbye. Jones and McMackin sat side-by-side on the flights to and from American Samoa.
“We just had a great time,” McMackin said.

* * *

Wideout Ryan Henry, a junior-college transfer, will arrive in town this week for Summer Session II, which starts next week.
But two other transfers — Jovonte Taylor and Dustin Blount — will remain at their JCs for the next few weeks.
It was hoped that Taylor and Blount would arrive early enough to participate in unsupervised workouts. But they still need to complete work at their JCs. They are expected to arrive in time for the start of training camp in August.

The donation money is being put to use. Each of the coaches received a new wide-screen television. Now, all of the practice and game videos can be shot in wide screen. Here’s offensive coordinator Ron Lee’s TV (with a video from a spring practice):

From what I’ve observed, several players have assumed leadership roles this season. The offensive leaders are Inoke Funaki, Tyler Graunke, Malcolm Lane, Leon Wright-Jackson, Daniel Libre, Dylan Linkner, Aaron Bain, Mike Washington, Jake Santos, Shane Austin, Ray Hisatake and Keith AhSoon. On defense, the guys running the show are David Veikune, Adam Leonard, Keala Watson, Ryan Mouton, Keao Monteilh and Blaze Soares. There are other leaders, of course, in other workouts.

This past weekend, Adam Leonard said, he went surfing for the first time. He said he went to Waikiki. Fortunately, he avoided the box jellyfish.

He is one of the few who embraces my camera:

It hasn’t been easy for Tyler Graunke to balance workouts with a busy academic schedule. But he has made the most of his time on the field. Graunke has been a helpful tutor:

And here’s Graunke with wideout Malcolm Lane:

Remember Jayson Rego, former state Offensive Player of the Year? He’s in the mix at running back. The No. 1s are Leon Wright-Jackson and Daniel Libre. Jake Heun and David Farmer are competing at power back. Mario Cox isn’t on the 105-player training camp roster, although he has been invited to rejoin the first day of school. Here’s Rego:

Big thanks to Dr. Dennis Watkins, who removed an inch-long cyst from my head today. He even did his own stitching. Quite a talented guy. Thanks again.

glad to hear that Coach Mack plans to visit Samoa again next year

  2. mctruck:

    1st wohooo!!!

  3. mctruck:

    2nd wohooo!!

  4. brentos:

    First?

  5. mctruck:

I was under the impression that UH had always scouted the entire Samoa’s???

  6. brentos:

Bummer. Oh well it was worth a try. Long time lurker here. :)

  7. mctruck:

Where’s the blue ray or dvd???

  8. d1shima:

Wow. But does it pale in comparison to gigi’s TV?

  9. Annoddah Dave:

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

The dog days of summer are rapidly wasting away as the FB season approaches. The anticipation is starting to grind on the mind. Can’t wait need FB fix soon!!
    Go Warriors!

  10. d1shima:

Nice pose Adam Leonard. But in surfing, like football, the footwork is key.

  11. mctruck:

Adam Leonards pose looks more like the Heisman, you think??

  12. Loa:

AL surfing - i bet nobody when drop in on him, hehe, prolly even the jellyfish was sced, i remember the Nasty one used to surf too

  13. Stephen Tsai:

    McTruck:
American Samoa and Samoa (previously known as Western Samoa) are two entirely different places. Samoa does not have organized football leagues.

  14. Kekoa:

    Gigi approved wide screen TV’s…wow!

  15. Garret:

Great to hear that Mack will be going to (Western) Samoa!

Also great to see that the donations are making a difference–those TVs will be a huge help when the coaches analyze film.

  16. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    fifteent!!! ;)

  17. Garret:

Garret ~ Back in the day when we played Football in the Army, there were football facilities at every large Army base. Even overseas in Korea where I played during the mid 60’s in the 8th Army Football League.

Here in Hawaii, Football was very popular out at Schofield until the mid 70’s when DA stopped the program world wide and shut down ‘varsity’ sports. The only sport they continued was boxing. In the 1980 Olympics, I believe 9 of the 11 boxers that came from out of Ft. Bragg, NC medaled. The best known of the bunch was Sugar Ray Leonard.

No reason why we couldn’t ask the Command Staff. They are always looking for community relations opportunities. This would help the morale of the troops if they did.

    Kekoa,

I agree that training at a military base would be good for the Warriors and the troops. I hope that can happen sometime in the future. That, plus making it easier for the troops to buy UH tickets, would be huge for outreach into the military community for UH Athletics, and would bring in new fans to the games.

  18. Garret:

Pretty interesting that this student who will soon be at UH was a prom queen AND is a professional football player!

When Dani Welniak goes over the middle and makes a big catch it doesn’t look so different from any other wide receiver.

The first thing that looks different, though, is her blonde ponytail dangling from under her helmet. That’s because Dani is Danilynn of the Dallas Diamonds women’s pro football team.

But unlike other football players she’s also a prom queen. Her teammates and coaches didn’t, initially, know what to think.

“You get a prom queen coming to play football you don’t know what you’re going to get,” says Diamonds coach Todd Hughes. “But she’s proven herself that’s the main thing.”

When she got the call to play for the Diamonds, Welniak delayed an academic scholarship to the University of Hawaii.

  19. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Good Morning errybody, ’specially brento, Annodah Dave, and McTruck ! :)
Whea you postin from, brento? Good to see you fallah in hea, MT and AD!

Oh yah, good morning Meestah Tsai! Are you down at the sweat shop or working from da hale? Who donated da kala for the gigi TVs?

  20. Garret:

Report on Oregon State students staying from summer school mentions 2 students from Hawaii.

Another trend for the summertime is that 25 percent of the enrolled students are from out-of-state instead of the 20 percent customary during the rest of the year. That’s probably because no out-of-state tuition is charged during summer term.

“During summer, there’s nothing else to do here, so you might as well take summer school,” said Chantel Peterson, a sophomore interior design major from Hawaii.

“I like it during the summer,” said Iamafana Tuimalealiifano, a sophomore from Hawaii who plays defensive line for the OSU Beavers football team. “It’s not as packed. You don’t have to wait for things.”

  21. Garret:

Article about Texas Tech’s QB mentions Colt. Colt would have set the records if UH hadn’t been blowing out so many teams.

Harrell completed one of the most notable seasons in NCAA history, becoming only the sixth person to throw for 5,000 yards in a single season. His 5,705 yards rank second all-time behind former Tech quarterback B.J.Symons’ NCAA season mark of 5,833 yards in 2003. Harrell also is tied 11th on the NCAA career touchdown passes list with 89 and ranks fourth on the single-season list with 48 in 2007. Additionally, Harrell set six NCAA records last year, including throwing for 400 yards in 11 games, breaking the old mark of nine games set by Houston’s David Klingler (1990), Symons (2003) and Hawaii’s Colt Brennan (2006).

  22. Garret:

    Article on Washington mentions Colt.

Quarterback: Probably the key to the team’s fortunes is Jason Campbell. He had his share of stops and starts last season but for the most part was progressing nicely until going down with a knee injury late in the season. This could be the year that determines whether he is the long-term answer. His backup is veteran Todd Collins, who played brilliantly after Campbell was hurt. Also, Colt Brennan from Hawaii is an intriguing rookie.

  23. Pauoa Boy:

    Good Morning Gang

  24. Pauoa Boy:

I think Adam showing us how he spock the local chicks while on the waves. His oddah pose is typical Japanese tourist style.

  25. Kekoa:

    Interesting quote Garret:

Also, Colt Brennan from Hawaii is an intriguing rookie.

I hope the Washington fans change that description to indefensible once Colt has a chance to show them that there is no intrigue involved. It’s called passing accuracy.

  26. Pauoa Boy:

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Colt get in on some games this season, Campbell is so-so and injury prone, Collins is, uh old, the other QB is a scrub and will probably get cut. Maybe if the Redskins make the playoffs he can get more PT towards the end of the season. I can totally see him unseating Campbell in a year or two if not this one.

  27. Pauoa Boy:

Eh I thought Bain play WR, how come he look like one LB ready for unload on somebody…

Hope that duo of Graunke and Lane becomes frightening to opposing defenses secondary. I think double digit touchdowns is on the agenda for Lane this year barring any injury.

  28. Stephen Tsai:

According to his dad, Colt now has been told he needs to lose some weight. I guess he’s come full circle.

  29. bighilofan2:

    Maverick

about the 09 and 10 schedules. SMU open 8.29.09?
in ‘10, we get USC 1st. Thats set. The last two dates in 10 are open though. I think SMU is open there too. Am I wrong? maybe it would be too soon for friendly fight. sure would pack da Aloha and SMU stadiums.

i no kea. i am grateful to JJ fo da memories. Now we get Mack and JD. I still get my SB stuff, but like somebody said, change da screen, move on to ‘08.

    60 dayz. nuff said.

  30. bonar:

    30th!

  31. Pauoa Boy:

Anyway, I see you Tsai-ko grazies soon. About to be cut off in a few so can pack up and clean my hale before the move. Looking forward to the Blog Bash…Au’ryte!

  32. bonar:

    Adam hamming it up- funny!

  33. Kekoa:

Well, there goes our CC with Colt. (Tsigh…) We were soooo ready to Tsaiko size him, no they want to downsize. Ain’t that jst like corporate America?

  34. Kekoa:

PB ~ Call me as soon as you get ‘in-country!’

  35. Stretch:

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

We had a nice group together last night at Hukilau for the Call the AD show. It was great to meet bonar who has made a very generous donation to the blog party. Also met a lurker who reads a lot but too chicken to post. We need to find a way to get him to write something. Spoke w/ Kapahulu who I had to put on the waiting list for the blog party. The waiting list is growing and hoping we can work something out to allow everyone to come down.

  36. Pauoa Boy:

Kekoa - was planning on it already, should touch down either Thursday or Friday, I give you a ring.

  37. Garret:

According to his dad, Colt now has been told he needs to lose some weight. I guess he’s come full circle.

    ST,

That is pretty funny! The draft analysts and NFL people kept telling Colt to gain weight before the draft, but now Washington realizes he doesn’t need that weight! Bulking up some is fine for Colt, but I don’t think his frame and playing style would suit a huge weight gain.

  38. al:

    d1….your post #8

no, no, no……her tv is out dated already. newer models with some refining points are now on the market. the coaches’ tv’s are newer also.

  39. Maverick:

    BHF2-
That SMU season opener for ‘09 would be a keeper instead of the end of the season. If scheduled for the latter, then we would have to open up against a conference foe. Let’s open against SMU and smuuuu them, then close the season against Boise on The Green and Black turf and spank the Bronck’s. Classic.

  40. laiho:

    that tv is a Sony W series tv….i believe that is about a 40in…. about 2k at sears….WOW sexy…

  41. al:

that’s always a shaky situation with jc’s guys who haven’t qualified early.

usually the best ones can transfer in a year because they qualified right out of high school. the next best kinds are those who accelerate their aa degrees and are eligible to enroll in january, such as hisatake.

i wonder how many great football players never make it to college because of academics. for them, college is the “minor leagues” since football has no farm system at all.

  42. Kekoa:

BHF2 ~ Eh!..watchit. Using words like ’spank’ around Koa Wahine is hazardous. No get her too excited!

  43. gigi-hawaii ©:

    “gigi-approved TVs”??? hmmph. If it isn’t 52 inches wide, it ain’t gigi-approved!

Seriously, though, I am happy that the coaches are happy.

  44. (Jesse) James:

Stretch…I forgot to tell you last night to e-mail me the info so I can put it on our list of giveaways….thanks.

  45. Garret:

Thanks to Google, these are SMU’s nonconference games in 2009:

    9/5 vs. Stephen F. Austin
    9/19 @ Missouri
    9/26 @ TCU
    10/17 vs. Navy

It should be noted that the C-USA conference games have a weird schedule setup. For example, SMU opens the season at Rice on 8/30/08, but I think that the conference schedule is set after the previous season is over,so there would be an opening for 8/29/09 for them.

However, it would be MUCH better for UH is some Pac-10 or other BCS conference team would like to open their season in Hawaii.

Remember, C-USA has a conference championship game so scheduling C-USA teams (or Big 12 or SEC teams) is difficult to end the season. That is why conferences like the Pac-10 and Big-10 were scheduled by UH late in the season in the past.

  46. tom mui:

    GARETT:

Pretty interesting that this student who will soon be at UH was a prom queen AND is a professional football player!(/blockquote> interesting story - thanks!

  47. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Great move by Mac to start the W. Samoa connection. Gotta be some big skilled guys down there, and they should be playin’ on “Polynesia’s Team”. Coach continues to make all the right moves. With no organized U.S. Football, it must be safe to say that he’s going after rugby athletes.

Thanks for the pic of Rego, an unselfish guy who continues to give his all for the team. It would be sweet to see him get some playing time, he’s earned it.

  48. Kekoa:

Stretch ~ Koakane is going to get with you direct, with info you needed for your wait list.

Par for the golf tourney on Kauai must have been based on bowling averages for people to come out 1 over. Mebbe they counted every 5 wiffs as 1 storke. This calls for a USGA investigation on stroke shaving.

  49. Da Punchbowl Kid:

So who in particular donated the TV money? It’s prolly been mentioned here, but I have forgotten.

  50. al:

    let’s drive the kid nutz.

don’t tell him who donated the money.

  51. (Jesse) James:

al….is it because they haven’t qualified yet? or is it just because the summer sessions differ at the JC level and they’re not completed with their work yet??? Just a thought…

ST…Like the TV’s but REALLY LOVE the TV stands…where can I pick one of those up??? MWAHAHAHAHAHA

  52. (Jesse) James:

    DPK…you’re right…it was mentioned here….

  53. Stretch:

  59. BG:

    Kekoa

    Sent you email…

  60. al:

i am guessing that they haven’t qualified yet. they need to get their aa degree before becoming eligible.

hopefully there will be no hitches.

  61. homey ®:

They could have at least dusted the file cabinet before putting the hdtv, bought from donated money, on it.

koawahine - DPK looks like Mr. Incredible. He’s a stud! Look up “stud” in the dictionary and you’ll see a picture of DPK!

  62. al:

    tunda tung????

  63. homey ®:

    Hi XLiz!

Good to see Tyler out there working with the team!

gigi - did you or hubby par any hole? Wait, it was a par 3 course…did you or hubby reach any green?

  64. homey ®:

al - obviously it’s a case of mistaken name identity.

  65. koawahine:

DPK stud. Oh my. Ssshhhh. Don’t tell my boyfren koakane.

  66. Maverick:

That’s correct Homey, DPK was also responsible for the Father’s role and figure profile in the Animated “The Incredibles.”
KoaWahine, That should paint the picture.

If you look me up in the dicitionary, it will not only say that I’m a non-branded calf with mischievious behavior, but my dimensions are 4′9″ H x 3′6″ wide. Almost cubicle, but give me a few more years.

Hey, Still no Guava sightings since this site was metamorphized ?

And where the Heck is Fla.Ted?

    BTW, Howdy McTruck.

  67. gigi-hawaii ©:

    homey,

no, we did not par any hole. Most of our drives went only a few feet, though hubby made some very good drives (for him). Since it was Best Ball, we often did not have a chance to putt as Liz’s friends reached the hole first.

    Stretch,
    re: blog party count
after enough shot glass sales (w/ required CR fill up & companion welcome shot), you’ll forget to keep count of how many people walked through the door…. that’s why get the twins to take care of that.

  69. (Jesse) James:

al…I probably should have clarified. Are they not eligible yet because they had problems passing their classes? or is it just because summer school isn’t over for them yet (i.e. Santa Clara’s first SS ends in 2 weeks because they are on a different semester schedule than UH whereas UH’s first SS ends this week).

koawahine - homey is right, DPK is a stud…When I was doing some construction work, DPK walked by and my stud finder went bananas….MWAHAHAHHAHA

  70. Da Punchbowl Kid:

It’s fine, I don’t really care who donated the TVs. I’m just happy that our fine coaches have been given props like these.

Koawahine, I am sure you’re just one of the instigator perverts from around here, posting under a false nic, but for the record, I am one of the fattest oldest grayest whitest looking hawaiians you will ever see. I am also nothing if not a gentleman, so all I can say is that while you are correct about some things, I was never your boyfriend because I have only lived here at Puowaena since marrying my beloved wife Sweety. BTW, real gentlemen NEVER kiss and tell. :P

  71. gigi-hawaii ©:

This is our plan — hubby will take lessons, and then he will teach me what he knows. He had so much fun at Liz’s golf tournament, he can’t stop talking about it.

  72. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    ;)

  73. (Jesse) James:

Stretch…maybe twins become quadruplets by that point….MWAHAHAHAHAHA

  74. homey ®:

gigi - awwww, at least I’m assuming you and hubby had a lot of fun out there!

Maverick - I’m sure guava lurks.

  75. Barry Markowitz:

ST, the McMackin (Western) Samoa discussion further confirms that he reads WB, as we discussed it here two weeks ago. Samoa is only 53 minutes away from American Samoa by small commuter prop plane. Samoa had small time professional football 5-6 years ago, run by an American Mainland guy of questionable integrity. He left his American citizen coach stuck in Apia, Samoa for months with unpaid bills and a “stop order” preventing his departure back to America when the league failed. Samoans (Western) are avid NFL and college fans. I remember several times watching Jessie Sapolu in the back room at Otto’s Reef, where they took bets, shot pool, drank and cheered for Sapolu as one local boy. During the 1990 Commonwealth Games when I represented Samoa (in shooting) in Auckland, NZ I remember we took time out to cheer for one of Jessie’s Super Bowl victories at our official residential venue. As I mentioned yesterday, Movesi Tuiloma my nephew, came straight from the remote Savaii, Samoa island direct to Washburn Rural H.S. in Topeka, Kansas and has excelled academically and athletically. The important thing to note is that the primary education of Samoa (Western) has been more solid than that of American Samoa. Basic core education deficiencies in the Territory of American Samoa have worried me relative to the success rate of kids leaving for Div 1 schools…which shows you that kids like Mel Purcell III are exceptional. For a long time to come I think American Samoa kids will need special support programs, summer school, etc, or for their own future the must consider the JC route first like Isaac Sapoaga.

  76. homey ®:

gigi - sounds like a good plan…only if hubby does what the golf guru says and only if he is a good teacher to you. If he doesn’t and isn’t then it would be funny seeing both of you with the hack and whack swing.

  77. homey ®:

koawahine - DPK is just being modest. BTW, tell him your phone number and it will be in every men’s restroom at the end of Waikiki!

  78. (Jesse) James:

Hey DPK…How do you know koawahine is an instigator???

  79. koawahine:

Well punchbowl kid, i apologize if you are not tunda. You sound like a very swell guy anyway. Your sweety iz one lucky gal. Glad to hea dat you iz one real gentleman, jus like my husband. In fact he calling me now, i gotta go, he get wild everytime he find out dat i get udda boyfrens. So punchbowl kid, smooches and smooches, and i will talk to you latahz.

  80. homey ®:

gigi - kekoa mentioned to watch video of a pro golfer and mimic their swing. you can make it easier by getting a video of Phil Mickelson. He is a lefty so he will be your mirror image and it will be easier to breakdown and copy the swing.

  81. homey ®:

James - How does he know she is a pervert?

  82. (Jesse) James:

    Homey - tru dat….MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  83. gigi-hawaii ©:

I am not sure what hubby meant, but yesterday, he said he wanted to try the golf swing analysis on Nimitz Street. Anybody know something about that?

Apparently, your golf swing is videotaped and then analyzed.

  84. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Because I know “she” is prolly one of you two pervs. But like I said, she WAS right about “SOME” things. ;)

  85. (Jesse) James:

    DPK…I resent being called a “she” ….MWAHAHAHHAHAHA

  86. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    I rest my case!

  87. homey ®:

Speaking of Rego, he looked wickedly quick at spring practice.

  88. koawahine's cuz:

Now now DPK. My cousin is one first class wahine. No make li dat. She just wen tink you was one of her boyfriends. And from da way homey, Jesse James, al, and others have described you, I tink she wen pass up one good ting…Mr. Incredible you.

  89. homey ®:

I resent James is called a “she” too! Hmmpphh! :x:

  90. homey ®:

gigi - Don’t know anything about swing analysis on Nimitz but I do remember seeing a golf place right after Zippy’s and Sam Choy’s heading towards Ala Moana. If anything, James knows about swing analysis on Hotel St.

  91. (Jesse) James:

DPK…I was just saying that I resented being called a she since you think I’m koawahine….I would rather be called a pervert….MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  92. gigi-hawaii ©:

    OK, homey. Poor James… haha

  93. (Jesse) James:

homey - I told you, not Hotel Street…Merchant and Bishop…..mwahahahha

  94. al:

swing analysis….got to have a swing first.

  95. koawahine's cuz:

homey, I’ve heard that you are small in stature but get da big guns….u might be competing with DPK on my HOT list

  96. (Jesse) James:

    gee…thanks gee gee

  97. al:

so dpk is the self professed, moby kanak?

jj…..they need to get the aa degree before enrolling. sort of like keenan jones a few years ago. that is too bad. i am sure coach wanted them in summer session 2 and at the unsupervised workouts.

  98. al:

    all you guava lovers…..
    think about it man.

no guava. he moved to dallas, texas.

  99. Jack Flash:

Does anyone remember JD joking about playing a double or nothing “winner take all” game against SMU for the $400K+ that JJ owes UH? I think I heard it on the radio one day listening to one of the sports talk shows. Talk about a guaranty sellout at Aloha Stadium! The press coverage both locally and nationally would be huge!!!

  100. homey ®:

James - Don’t you mean Merchant and Bethel? Wreck told me that.

  101. homey ®:

al - still probably lurks though. No matter where you are the blog is still here.

Jack Flash - I wish SMU and UH will get it on! Next year looks good!

al…understand about the aa stuff. But what if you are one of the recruits and you need to complete one session of summer school with one class to get your AA. However, the JC you are attending doesn’t complete its first summer session until July 30 because their fall semester doesn’t begin until mid September (like Princeton because of their tri-semester set up). You get an “A” in the class but your final certified transcripts don’t get to UH until the first week of August. UH starts their fall semester in Late August…so you’d only have a two week window to enroll. Which is different from the same scenario but the player is barely making the grade in the class to the point where if he doesn’t get an “A” on the final, he will not earn his AA degree and thus not be eligible to even enroll at UH.

I’m just wondering if it is a problem with the players even passing their classes to get their AA, or is it just because the “work” they need to complete is due to the fact that they still have some weeks of school to finish but are in no way in jeopardy of failing their classes and not getting their AA.

  104. (Jesse) James:

homey…yeah, there too. That whole block…by TOPA (old Amfac building) and the Dillingham and C.Brewer Buildings.

  105. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Howzit Jack! Long time no see braddah! Howz you been? Wheaz you been?

  106. WarriorMojo:

DPK: “I am one of the fattest oldest grayest whitest looking hawaiians you will ever see.”

DPK, you really don’t look that white.

  107. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Warrior Mojo-
Har. Das a good one cuz. Let’s see how many of these bananas get that one.

  108. WarriorMojo:

Koawahine, forget tunda tung. Did you know that the “D” in DPK stands for “deep”?

I mean “deep” as in DEEP!

    DEEPER, even!

  109. homey ®:

Who cares fact: August has 2 new moons.

  110. Da Punchbowl Kid:

 *DPK wonders how all these guys know SOOOOO much about his personal life. The fact that they even wonder about it is very disturbing,*

  111. WarriorMojo:

James, homey, you guys got the right location. Sometimes, I work late and have to drive through there to get home. Always see the “girls” out, working.

  112. prideperiod:

FOOTBALL, fun, FOOTBALL, food, FOOTBALL, family, FOOTBALL, fellowship.

See the emphasis is always on FOOTBALL right?

  113. Kekoa:

Gigi ~ If you are truly serious about taking up this sport, you should take seperate Golf lessons. Consider this honest and constructive criticisim.

Hubby is a hacker, I’ve made that abundantly clear before. Hard to break that habit, and it might corrupt your swing pattern just by watching him. Eventually you will end up arguing about what he wants to teach you.

Once you are instructed by a club pro, accept no advice from anyone else. If there are corrections to be made HE or SHE will advise you. You will spend hundreds of dollars on this sport. At least get your money’s worth by learning from a pro.

What I showed you was 9-1-1 help to get you to Liz’s tourney…that’s not even close to what lies ahead in learning the nuances of this game. There is much to learn, ask whitey, duffer or coach Bulla if you don’t believe me.

The real fun begins when you can put that ball right where you want it in regulation and par or better yet birdie the hole.

ummm, yeah right it’s ON THE WAY home.

  115. Spashual Ed:

uhhh, DPK, i no kachh. u ken xplen fo me wot WM taukin’ try sayin? wea my helmut?

  116. prideperiod:

That’s okay Gigi, I understand what you are talking about. What I do, if I want legal advice? I ask Homey a legal question, then he tells James, who asks Warrior Mojo, then gives James the answer, and James tells Homey, and Homey tells me, then I got to bed at night knowing that my legal matters are well taken care of.

That’s the analogy of you taking lessons from your rookie golfer hubby.

  117. homey ®:

prideperiod - Bethel street is right down the road from the UH unsupervised workout. gigi can drive her golf ball almost the length of a FOOTBALL field. Hope to see you soon.

  118. Stretch:

    Bio schedule:
    Tuesday: UHfan808.
    Wednesday: Dara Young.

hmmm, I THINK today is Tuesday

  119. prideperiod:

Got 52 Tuesdays in the year. Which one is it?

  120. homey ®:

So either gigi will have a near perfect swing or she’s screwed…figuratively.

  121. Stretch:

pride - you sounding like a certin ex-AD without a job right now.

  122. Maverick:

    Al,

    Guava got SMU’d?

    Puree’d Texas Style?

    Hmm, neva’ thought about that.

  123. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Thanks for bringing the focus back to football, prideperiod. Waddya think our O line is gonna be like this year?

  124. homey ®:

Around half the Tuesday’s have been used already for this year…

  125. Stretch:

Mav - guava puree tastes good mixed into the BBQ sauce burnt on the ribs.

  126. homey ®:

DPK - pride already answered that question in a previous blog.

  127. Jack Flash:

    Aloha DPK,
I’ve been working… ALOT! But, always lurking. I’m really looking forward to next season though! I gotta make it out to one of these blog parties one day (or night, if the wife loosens the leash a bit!)

  128. Koa-mahu:

Ehhh Wahine! why you like know about DPK? Nothing great about him. All he like do is write, write, write! he don’t care about my needs! like i said before *snap* you got to pick’em right. Kekoa got the mafia car. and homey if you like try on midget. people like stretch don’t live up to his name and koakane if you really desperate.

  129. Da Punchbowl Kid:

I’m still waiting for lunch from Football Fan. Maybe he’ll call.

  130. Koa-mahu:

    guava puree! Jack Flash!

it is getting hot for a sistah like me on this blog… out of here! *snap*

  131. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Homey,
Maybe pride has some up dates on the O line. Why dont ya mind ya own, Miss instigator.

    Jack,
Gald to see you’re busy these days, Ida thunk you guys might be slow these days. Just tell the wife your hangin with me the next time you wanna go to one of our CCs or KKs. Are you coming to the blog party on the 10th?

  132. homey ®:

News flash: O-line unsupervised workouts held at Klum Gym.

  133. WreckinEyez:

    Where is UH808’s bio?

Maybe we should write her one… Everybody chip in!.. Homey can start.

  134. homey ®:

    Ok,

    Hi this is UHfan808, hehehehehehehe

I’m gonna start of with a song.

    “Cold cooling at a ball
    Looking for some action
    But like Mick Jagger said
    I can´t get no satisfaction…”

    hehehehehehehe

  135. Humbolt:

Is it me or does A.L. look like he’s been slackin on the Benchpress. Looks like an A cup. But if none of the other 100 RB’s pan out Bain looks the part

  136. midori7:

uhfan808 is still working on her bio. last I heard, she was told it would appear Wed, not today.

    just gotta wait…

  142. homey ®:

    Stretch - SteveM?

  143. Jack Flash:

DPK- I can’t make the blog party. Sounds like a blast though. How does my wife sign up for the clinic being put on by Coach Mack’s wife?

  144. Stretch:

    *** Blog Party Alert ***
Due to popular demand, we have made some adjustments and now are able to open up the RSVP list again. There will be a 12 noon deadline on Friday July 4. NO exceptions after that as we will need to call in the count and food order. For the people on the wait list, I will be emailing you shortly with the info.

  145. homey ®:

    Stretch - GOOD NEWS!

  146. Ronnie:

    Stretch, that’s great news!

Wow, how did you get them to open up the entire SSC?

  147. Stretch:

We will be adjusting the layout of the party to accomodate more people.

  148. A-House:

    DPK:

I am also interested in knowing who/whom donated the TVs or $ to buy the TVs for the coaches.

Unless they request anonymity, I believe it best to “publicize” this to the community so others who want to contribute can do so. More publicity the better for things like this!!

After all, it will take a state-wide-effort to assist Coach Mack and JD in raising the bar for Hawaii.

  151. Jason:

I’m afraid UHfan808’s bio will not appear on the blog. For you see, she is currently talking to Bess Press about publishing her life story. Yesterday at Da Hukilau and The Hungry Lion, she showed us her manuscript. So far, she has written up everything through her high school years. Look for the hardcover edition to show up in local bookstores soon! ;-)

  152. Jason:

gigi: Just be thankful the courses you went to are so lenient. To think, a woman golfing in a mu‘umu‘u and sandals. That’s near blasphemy. Completely unprofessional. It’s as if Mr. gigi went golfing in a T-shirt and shorts while wearing rubber slippers.

  153. al:

(jesse) please tell james no get too technical eh.
okay, summer schools get out early enough for him to get his transcripts down to the compliance person, if he is in his office.

i am sure that these kids are scrambling to get it done by know. its their last chance at d1 football. otherwise, they will end up in the football cyberspace like one kenny graham of last year. much talent but never qualified.

hopefully, taylor and blount make it through. i believe they were the cream of the wr recruits.

  154. gigi-hawaii ©:

he is though a smu staffer.

    get it?
    got it?
    good!

  156. al:

gigi hawaii…..sandals no handicap that can cover her score.
jj…..barefooted….no handicap…scratch golfer, he is that good.

that does not equate my dear.

    hey, JJ golfs barefooted!!!!

Yeah, and he alienated a lot of people at Waialae by doing so. Golf is all about tradition.

Al, I thought you said Guava was not that guy or did I misunderstand?

  158. Jason:

I guess I’m old fashioned. I don’t even like these short skirts that the ladies are wearing now.

  159. al:

    cute gigi.

jack flash is not female but just the figment of the imagination of the blog.

but, of course you knew that and was going along with the charade, right?

btw, you are in fine form today.

  160. gigi-hawaii ©:

Actually, more golfers should wear a loose-fitting, very comfy muumuu - plus rubber soled, cushioned sandals like mine.

Maybe, I can cause a revolution in golf attire.

  161. gigi-hawaii ©:

Al, my msg was directed at Jack Flash’s wife and any other female out there who would be interested in the clinic.

  162. al:

    perhaps, if i may suggest….

you take up bowling or bocci ball if you insist on wearing your muumuu and sandals. unless, of course, it is your only wish to draw attention to yourself.

in another effort, try playing tennis in a muumuu and slippahs.

in fact, why don’t you take on all sports with the muumuu/sandals. chronolize the events and you would have the subject matter of your next book.

“muumuu mama of sports, the life and times of gigi-hawaii”

and if i were you i’d start with 24 hour fitness.

  163. Jason:

Thank you, WarriorMojo. I never approved of barefoot golfing either. Unless you have a medical condition, of course.

Golf is a very traditional game, mavericks aren’t well received. Mu‘umu‘u and barefoot golfing, it makes me shudder.

If you want to continue golfing, you’ll have to get together with a pro, not try to learn second-hand off hubby. And if you guys get better and want to start going to better courses, I’d suggest transitioning to more appropriate golf attire. I don’t care if you want to wear mu‘umu‘u everywhere else, but on a golf course… Even if it’s allowed, I still think it’s questionable. 8O

  164. al:

gigi….that’s just it. there is no jack flash.

  165. al:

mojo….just an educated guess on my part that he is an ex-uh staffer.

  166. al:

jason….you don’t like short skirts? shorts?
    now, you got me worried.

  167. al:

    penny wise
    dollar foolish

  168. gigi-hawaii ©:

hmmm. I guess that’s why I was never into sports. Never was an athlete. Anyway, golf is just a past-time for me. I can take it or leave it, since it is not an obsession.

Hubby, on the other hand, is really into golf. Hope he stays with it. Oh no, then I’ll be a golf widow!

  169. WreckinEyez:

    Gigi,

If you could swing a golf club the way it should be swung… you would see that a Muumuu would hinder your form. some things are there for a reason.

Like you can’t go to a country club with out a collard shirt. Why? because you tone down the overall atmosphere of the place. Can’t be in a professional or elegant setting unless you dress the part yourself.

  170. gigi-hawaii ©:

OK, let’s see how long I can golf in a muu and sandals without some honcho telling me I can’t. haha

  171. al:

aren’t you already a 24 hour fitness widow? why don’t you join him?

  172. al:

    whitey…..are you listening or laughing?

  173. WreckinEyez:

LMAO… Nah Gigi, I don’t think anyone is going to bother you. They might think, “ :) Aww look at the senile old woman trying to exercise” And they would let you go… I think you can get away with it for some time.

Don’t try that on some private courses though and more so, don’t get mad when they tell you that you can’t golf.

Just get made at you hubby when he leaves you in the car to go play some rounds because he is addicted to it. Nothing like hacking some overgrowth.

  174. gigi-hawaii ©:

Hubby and I used to exercise at 24 hr together. But, usually, I zipped thru the routine in 30-45 mins and wanted to go home — much to his annoyance, since he wanted to exercise for 1-1/4 hr.

Anyway, exercise bored me so I stopped.

  175. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    al-
I am soooo sorry to dispute the uncle of the blog. Jack Flash IS a real poster. He is an old friend of mine who has season tickets for UH’s games which are right next to bulla’s seats. There could be an impostor posting under his name, but Jack Flsah is a real poster. BTW-he’s one of the best rock drummers in the state. Thanks for allowing me to clarify that.

  176. Kelli:

Adam Leonard looks like a Japanese tourist. I can do that pose pretty well too. So well, in fact, that I can pass for a tourist too.

  177. gigi-hawaii ©:

Great to know, DPK. Jack Flash posted a few comments on my blog last year, and then disappeared. Good that he is not an imaginary friend.

  178. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    “Flash” not “Flsah”.

  179. homey ®:

That’s it, everybody let’s go golfing! Jason, read up on golf technique and let’s go!

Jack Flash, rock drummer, I pictured a Flintsone drum set.

  180. SteveM:

Kid is serious about blogger Jack Flash… I don’t think I’ve met him but the records show he has been posting occasionally since January 2007 and lists full name and contact info. He has been active in blog stuff. Only thing missing is his High school/grad year and his birthday. :)

  181. homey ®:

So where is the rest of the UHfan808 bio?

  182. homey ®:

gigi - I had to laugh when you said golf is a past-time for you. Sheesh you just started the game!

  183. WarriorMojo:

BTW-he’s one of the best rock drummers in the state.

Well, Mr. Jack Flash, I just want to tell you that it was a great, great thrill for me to shake hands (ah, more like a low five I guess,) with the great Charlie Watts a few years back. I don’t know that too many Tsaikos would appreciate that, but I’m sure you will.

The other thing I wanted to say is that all the great rock drummers are Brits: Bonzo, Moon, the late Cozy Powell, and the spectacularly under-appreciated Ian Paice to name a few. In fact I can’t even think of an American rock drummer in that class (Carmine Appice? Don Brewer?). Why is that?

  184. al:

    oh dear!
    whooooosh! dpk
    whooooosh! gigi
    and another whoooosh! for stevem.

  185. jasonk:

so guava is either JJ himself, Suan, JR, or McK…interesting…

  186. SoGood:

I hope the compliance officer will be able to get Taylor and Blount confirmed by the start of Fall camp. My bet is….they come here and watch practices until the middle of Sept and for some reason there’s something that is not getting them certified or whatever. Every year it seems like our JC guys don’t get approval until Sept and by that time, they barely have a chance at cracking into the practice rotation.

  187. homey ®:

Brits have been banging on drums from way back. They were the original drumline. Of course they needed many drummers because they just kept marching and kept getting shot by those gun powder muskets.

That must have been cool to see.

  191. Jack Flash:

I’m REAL… I think! You guys are too funny. DPK and Bulla know me. We actually moved our season tickets to sideline this year- but still in the lower orange section. I like being close to the action.
WarriorMojo- meeting Charlie Watts must’ve been a treat. Great American Rock drummers- Buddy Rich, Steve Smith, Joey Kramer to name a couple. Neal Peart was a HUGE early influence (but he’s Canadian.)
I like the modern guys like Stephen Perkins (JAne’s), Dave Abruzzese (Pearl Jam), Danny Carey (Tool), Matt Cameron (Soundgarden.) They really influenced my playing style in later years.

  192. (Jesse) James:

Stretch…great to hear about a few seats opening up…..

If anyone wants to see some of the stuff that will be for sale at the BLOG ANNIVERSARY PARTY click on my name. Have pictures of some items.

I thought UHFan808’s bio was supposed to be today but last night she told us that it was for Wednesday…..hmmmmmm….ST???

Pride - Do you think it is beneficial for the O-Line to practice their form in Klum as a conditioning thing to prepare for the humidity…and than go out to the field and practice technique against the D??? I remember us doing that in high school too prior to our practices during the summer months. We’d go into the gym where the temp was high and it seemed to better condition us but I could be wrong.

“Hi. My name is UHFan808 and I am a TSAIKO.”

    Altogether now, “HI UHFAN808!!!”

“I was born a while back on the banks of the Waialua River where my dad raised me to hunt and fish…and eat nenue poke, mmmmmmm limu….” Oh, wait a minute, I’m getting UHFan808’s and Addahknowsports bios mixed up…..MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  205. wafan:

Wow, Mr. Tsai. A cyst on your head. Must have been painful prior to lancing and draining since it could only go up or laterally. I am sure you will heal up very nicely!

I had one on my back that was pretty deep. Had it lanced. Darn thing had to be packed for nearly two weeks during the healing process.

Please ask Wena, next time, not to smack you on the head.

  206. gigi-hawaii ©:

  208. homey ®:

  209. wafan:

Little kids in a parade — there is nothing as cute and fun as that! It is exhausting for the adults, though. Stretch has the right idea about sitting on the side to clap and cheer as the kids and brave adults go marching by.

I’m guessing Dara Young has a very important role during Warrior Football home games.

  211. wafan:
