Senior slotback Aaron Bain is the rare player who does not have a tattoo. He mused that as a walk-on, he couldn’t afford one. Bain, who is scheduled to receive a football scholarship next month, has worked this summer as a counselor at a youth detention center in Makiki.

Slotback Kealoha Pilares, who is on scholarship, has a lot of ink.

Leon Wright-Jackson, who went home to Seattle for a few days, is back and working out daily. Wright-Jackson and Daniel Libre enter training camp as the co-No. 1 running backs.

To help prepare for the season, Wright-Jackson bought a pair of Under Armour cleats. UA is UH’s sponsor this year. The players won’t receive their UA cleats until training camp.

Kealoha Pilares, however, said he feels comfortable with his Nike shoes.

Jake Heun is expected to serve as a powerback in short-yardage situations. Heun was a skilled linebacker in JC — the “dark side,” he calls the defense — but he appears set to play offense this season.

Ray Hisatake is competing for the left tackle’s job and the title of Biggest Hair.

Right wideout Royce Pollard also has impressive hair.

  2. oxtail soup:

    hoohoo! g’nite!

  3. 99club:

    tree. More coffee.

  4. 99club:

It’s going to be interesting to see our rushing totals this year compared to previous years. I really like the stable of running backs we’ve got!

  5. HiFlyer:

Looks like LWJ has UA shoes, I wonder if he bought them on his own?

  6. Stretch:

ST - you should really be going to sleep before you burn your ala’s again. Have fun waking up early for the Parade.

  7. Ralph:

99club last year was a down year in rushing but with Nate and the rest of the RB’s we had nearly 1000 yards and maybe more…add the pass reception Rb’s did well. last year the guys went down to easily, reminded me of Bass from a few years ago…

  8. Stretch:

BTW - it is will also be a good opportunity on Sunday for the people interested in the evil twins to check them out. I heard they will be standing in line for a Colt autograph

  9. HiFlyer:

Stephen, you must be psychic or is it tpsychic.

  10. Ralph:

there is so much tape that it shouldn’t matter which shoes they are wearing..I don’t see a problem with rolling with UA because the tape locks every part of the shoe and foot in place making it one unit

  11. Ralph:

Eh Stretch how come you and Wreck are calling them the evil twins…..

  12. Ralph:

have the twins been standing near Koakane and James tonight…I hope the Pope doesn’t find out about their affiliation with Damien HS, he might rescind the canonization

  13. Ralph:

listening to oldies makes the evening very relaxing, finished with Eagles, now its Fleetwood Mac.

  14. Pomai:

Ralph wow I stay up already, en I did make my own coffee, da wife stay working for pay da bills LOL.

  15. 99club:

I’m guessing they tape each other’s ankles…or are there trainers available to do it? Good thing either way.

    Stretch-
Evil twins? Heh, heh. They’re too small to be evil. Sweet too.

  16. 99club:

St. Damien. I like the sound of it! Should happen in February I’m heard. Will Damien start playing the “…Saints come marching in..” song at their games next year? Why not?

  17. Stephen Tsai:

They’re pretty much on their own.
    They tape their own ankles.
    Adam Leonard brings the water.

  18. Pomai:

I wonder how many feet of tape they go through each year?

  19. Pomai:

Dang ST your as bad as me, keep all kinds of funny hours.

  20. 99club:

    ST-
    Thanks.

    Pomai-
Good morning…sorry about your dog and the vet bills. Our “pound puppy” has cost us a few hundred in the last 6 months mainly from eating things outside that he shouldn’t have.

  21. 99club:

    Goin’ for a jog…back later (I hope!)

  22. Ralph:

those tapes are expensive, okay for the ankles because its comfortable, but if you taping the socks and shoes, got to find a cheaper sub…to bad masking tape to sticky, it binds anything with good wrapping strength.

  23. Ralph:

Pomai anyone mention that you look like lucky luck

  24. Ralph:

    99club are you on Oahu

  25. Ralph:

ST need a group pix. Hisatake, Pollard and Mouton, poll best hair

  26. Pomai:

Ralph I wish I wuz a funny as he, and no your da first. Now I gotta go goolge da buggah foah see wot he looks like.

  27. Pomai:

I wasn’t living in Hawaii during the Lucky Luck years(50/60’s) but have seen him on the TV but was so long ago that I forgot what he looked like (Hawaii Five-O) so I goolged him, not much on him on the internet, an no photos. For a guy who was as popular as him you would think there would be more info on him.

  28. Pomai:

Dang where’s that edit button? goolged = googled

  29. MeiLing:

Aloha Kakahiaka! Happy 4th of July!

Dedicated guys! Can’t wait to see them on the field. Someone needs to show Heun how to make a shaka instead of horns. He’s a big back.

If Central Arkansas comes here to play in September 2009, it’s gonna feel like paradise to them here since it much more humid there.

  30. MeiLing:

I don’t think Pomai looks like Lucky Luck. Good thing he doesn’t look like J. Akuhead Pupule…

  31. 99club:

    Ralph-
I’m in San Angelo, TX. West TX or West Central TX depending on who you talk to.

  32. MeiLing:

Sad to hear that the Peanut Shop & Mo’ili’ili Mochi & Candies is going out of business. I was looking forward to eating their ono mochi & chi chi dango when I came home. Does anyone else provide boiled peanuts at Aloha Stadium?

  33. wafan:

Happy 4th of July to all of you patriotic Tsai-ko’s!!!

Whoo-hoo. Another day closer to kick-off. Yeah!

Looks like everyone is busy at work getting ready for the humongous bash coming up next week. Please have a great and safe time. Oh, and be sure to laugh for the rest of us who cannot be there.

  34. wafan:

    Dang. Almost forgot!

    Happy birthday USA!!!

  35. Garret:

Kudos to Coach Mack for expanding UH’s camp from what was offered last year! That is a great thing for Hawaii’s youth and will be a HUGE boost to UH’s recruiting efforts in the short-term and long-term (since he’s having a camp for the younger players also). People here know I’ve been strongly in favor of more camps and I’m happy that Coach Mack is exceeding expectations and doing the right thing for the program once again!

I know that the news was in the Advertiser yesterday, but I wanted to make sure I commented on this before I forgot.

  36. Garret:

Happy 4th of July to everyone! I hope that everyone has a great time today.

  37. Garret:

HF in the news! Funny thing is that he’s setting deadlines for himself now…wonder if he’ll actually make his internal deadlines?

Herman Frazier, in the process of moving back to Phoenix, said he has a self-imposed deadline to decide on his next job within 30 days.

The former Arizona State track star and longtime college and U.S. Olympic Committee administrator said he is talking with two “institutions of higher learning.” He is cautious in discussing whether he is among the candidates to become USA Track chief executive officer.

“You hear rumors that they want to talk to me,” Frazier said. “You hear rumors that people say you should move into that position. That’s not always the case. Is it a good fit for them, and is it a good fit for me? That’s got to work on both sides.

“At this point their search people are still working, and that’s pretty much all I can say about it. I’ve had some discussions with some people about it; that’s all I’ll say.”

A search committee independent of the USA Track board of directors is looking for a new CEO to replace Craig Masback, who left in January for an executive position with Nike. The original goal to make a hire June 1 has come and gone.

Frazier, 53, under pressure for several issues, including the departure of football coach June Jones, agreed to a contact buyout with the University of Hawaii, where he was athletic director for 5 1/2 years, in January. He interviewed for athletic director at the University of Miami soon after leaving Hawaii, a job that went to Kirby Hocutt of Ohio University.

Frazier is buying a house in Ahwatukee.

  38. Garret:

Navy is sure filling up its schedule spots quickly. They just scheduled another Texas team.

The Navy football team will play Rice on Oct. 10, 2009 at Rice Stadium, the school confirmed today.

  39. Garret:

This rumor I think has been denied already…

Agent Bus Cook has been yapping a lot over the past several months regarding the future of his star client, Brett Favre.

Most recently, we heard that Cook had been telling people that Brett still wants to play. (Two days later, it was widely reported that Brett is telling people that Brett still wants to play.)

We’re now hearing that Cook is privately saying that Favre wants to play for the . . . . drum roll, please . . . oh, wait, it’s in the headline . . . Carolina Panthers.

We don’t know why Favre is eyeing Carolina. Maybe he thinks that it’s the best place for him to step in as the starter, notwithstanding the presence of Jake Delhomme, and have a chance to win. Or maybe Favre wants to play for a time that’s fairly close to his home in Mississippi — and that will play three division road games in that same general area as well.

  41. Garret:

I wonder if this Minnesota transfer will get to play vs. UH? It sounds like he has a lot of talent and will have the speed to be a dangerous DE.

University of Cincinnati football coach Brian Kelly first met Alex Daniels in September, before the start of fall quarter.

He knew Daniels had been dismissed from Minnesota’s football program a few months earlier. He also knew about his potential as a football player.

After examining Daniels’ situation and talking with officials from Minnesota, UC athletic director Mike Thomas reached the same conclusion and on Thursday cleared Daniels to play at UC this fall.

According to a July 18, 2007, Associated Press story, junior Dominic Jones was accused of having sex with an 18-year-old woman who was “physically helpless” after a night of binge drinking at a campus apartment in early April of that year.

Investigators said Daniels used his cell phone to film Jones having sex with the woman. Hennepin County (Minn.) attorney Mike Freeman said that Daniels, and Minnesota players E.J. Jones and Keith Massey also had sex with the woman earlier that night.

Thomas said reinstating Daniels was not an easy decision. During the past week and a half, in addition to meeting with Daniels, he consulted with officials from Minnesota.

During two years at Minnesota, Daniels played in 23 games at linebacker and running back. In the Gophers’ 2006 season opener, he rushed for 155 yards and three touchdowns against Kent State.

Kelly said the 6-foot-3, 255-pound Daniels, who was ranked the 11th-best athlete in the nation by Rivals.com after he led Brookhaven to a state title in 2004, probably will be tried at defensive end at UC.

But first Daniels has to get healthy.

  42. Garret:

Amazing that Kansas’ new facility has a meeting room that is just for scout team players.

Scout-team players have their own meeting room.

Oh, that’s not a main attraction of the 80,000-square-foot Anderson Family Football Complex on the southwest side of Kansas’ Memorial Stadium.

That could be the massive weight room with custom-built work stations, a locker room large enough to land a small aircraft or coach Mark Mangino’s corner office overlooking the field that would be the envy of any corporate CEO.

But the idea of giving practice players their own space speaks to perhaps the best part of the $31 million project.

  43. bighilofan2:

    WM
I give yu props fo being up front.

like Barry at da airport, he wuz upfront too
subtle, but wit a hammah fo rearrange
    da ambiance… heh heh heh

  44. NYUH:

Heun looks awesome. Somebody give him some Travis Sims tapes. Needs to work on his shaka though.

  45. wafan:

I have wondered in the past if Stevens’ life would have been different had he actually gone to the UH. F v Appen actually tried to get him. But when the high school coach checked the UH program and stats he said that Stevens already knew how to lose (our team was winless or close to it at that time) and that he needed to learn to win.

Or, perhaps it was all for the better that he did not.

  46. bighilofan2:

    wafan

yu noticed dat too, huh! Texas transplant.
    yuk yuk

but it wudn’t teez him to his face, da bugga is solid.

  47. bighilofan2:

    oops

    i meant NYUH not wafan

  48. wafan:

    bhf2 . . .

No problem. People often say NYUH and I look alike.

    I feel sorry for NYUH.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  49. chawan_cut:

oooh, Nathan’s hot dog eating contest on ESPN coming up.

i love hot dogs, but not like them!

  50. wafan:

We need a Tsai-ko or three to teach the newbies how to do a shaka. Those guys are getting confused about their fingers. Is Huen practicing for the Vili look-a-like contest?

Has Mr. Tsai been relegated to shooting side, back and foot shots? The one with Bain looks like he is saying, “Take the photo at your own risk.”

Finally, I should have asked Koakane for his autograph before. Now that he is in the background the price just went up. Geez. Have to buy ticket, or what?

  51. bighilofan2:

    Bozo da Clown is dead.

  52. MeiLing:

The area in which HF is buying a house is known to us in AZ as: I’m-a-turkey. Appropriate place for HF.

  53. djmitcho:

good morning and happy 4th to everyone.

  54. d1shima:

    Great Morning All.

    bhf2,
    No, I’m right hea!
Oh….you meant da REAL Bozo. Sorry!

  55. d1shima:

    wafan,

Stevens already knew how to lose (our team was winless or close to it at that time) and that he needed to learn to win

Looks like da buggah been out proving wat he already knew and maybe nevah had the time fo’ learn wat he needed to learn.
I’ll repeat wat I said earlier dis morning - da buggah is pilau! Stay away!

  56. chawan_cut:

    Nathans:
this is the most filler ever for a “sports” event.

its a 10 minute eating contest that they’ve “Stretch”d into an hour long show.

talk about characters. each contestant has a nickname and a crazy get up to their look. face paint, hair, costumes.

we’ll see if joey chesnut can hold off kobayashi one more year.

  57. djmitcho:

    Jerramy Stevens = LOSER!!!!
How many chances can a guy get and still screw up?
So much talent but not to akamai da guy.

    oooh, a tie.
an “eatoff!” fastest to eat 5.
i don’t understand the rules. do you have to swallow? or just have it in your mouth? its over.
they just named chesnut the champion. i think his style of eating is better for shoving as much in your mouth quickly without swallowing. kobayashi’s method is more for long term eating. i’m sure there’ll be tons of replay coverage on espn tonight..

  63. Stephen Tsai:

Anyone else think it’s ironic that the deadline for hiring the Olympic administrator came and went without a hiring?

  64. Stephen Tsai:

By the way, check out who took the photographs for my brother’s hiking story.

  65. d1shima [sez:]:

    bhf2,

    Re-Coach Mack trip to Samoa

Reading another site, and the catalyst of the discussion was that “last night Papa Leahey gives Coach Mack a yellow card”. The argument centered on Leahey chastising Coach Mack for going to Samoa and following and tagging along too closely with Coach Jones.

To all the cynics out there, including Leahey, remember the trip was more so a good will mission. As ambassadors to college football, both schools, SMU and UH, had a few members of their coaching staffs along with a few current and former NFL UH alums traveling to Samoa to what…run a academy (football camp). And to pass out a few medical supplies. This was their objective, mainly to help with the kids. And to promote the game of football. With five college scholarships awarded it also planted the seeds in motivating the remaining kids to get better.

The June Jones foundation along with Coach Mack and Coach Jones should be commended for their generosity for their time, teaching and underwriting the costs of the trip. The impressions they leave on the community and to this writer is that they truly in their hearts have a love for helping the football impoverished so maybe one day not only UH or SMU yields the successes of the Samoa players entering the collegiate ranks. But all of college football. And maybe the NFL, too. This is good. And not a bad working relationship between the two coaches.

For people, especially people who’s commentary we listen too, like Leahey, look at the overall picture and rethink your statement. The impropriety as you see it, especially how you identify it as Coach Mack should be weening himself away from Coach Jones because their “fishing from the same pond” or recruiting the same area arguments are ridiculous statements. In view of the trip to Samoa and in view of all the good that comes out of it, I don’t think the actions of Coach Mack and his relationship with Coach Jones will handicap his ability to recruit against Coach Jones. The trade off, anyway, of all the goodwill, especially the charitable golf tournaments generating monies for the Hawaii community and the football camps in Samoa has a far reaching affect and impact…anyhow… than to cry about *if* Coach Mack might lose out to Coach Jones in the future recruiting wars.

  69. d1shima [sez:]:

    Stephen,

At the end of the day, when all is said and done….yada yada yada…

what was your first story about?

  71. d1shima [sez:]:

    Congratulations Stephen.
    Time flies….

  72. FloridaTed:

    Morning/afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Man, I love those pictures of our guys. If they’ll play half as good as they look, we’re in for a wild ride. I have a strong feeling that our running game will shock a few people this year, return to running glory?

I love and hate the unknown about our team at the same time, but it sure makes fall camp highly interesting.

Every body have a happy and safe 4th of July weekend. Happy birthday, USA.

  73. gigi-hawaii ©:

ST, when I was a junior at Roosevelt, I was hired to write stories for the Advertiser’s student page. Got paid 25 cents per column inch.

What is the going rate now, do you know?

    Stephen,
oh, and congrats to the budding new photographer in the family. did she use your old or new camera?

  75. NYUH:

myki1, thanks for the offer to get me the Washington game but I saw it four times when I had it so I’ll wait to buy it off the UH website.. whenever that happens.

bighilofan2: Heun knows the dark side. May the Fourth be with us.

  76. d1shima [sez:]:

    bhf2,

I gonna speak my mine on dis one privately. private, isn’t dat a good ting….

I guess you like to work “in close” and dats fine.

Fo’ me, I think it’s kinda distressing that this guy was “dropped off” at an UNSUPERVISED workout by a coach (who, in the players’ eyes, should be a trusted individual) to be amongst players who would probably only see the “NFL star” aspect of this guy.
I doubt that any of them would have been aware of the in depth stuff from the Seattle Times report on Stevens and certainly when he was “dropped off” at the practice field no one was handing out a dossier of the guy.
I hear wat you saying about friends console friends in hard times but as a coach, he get his responsibility to the players to set an example for them to follow. He is showing the players that it’s OK to “hang-out” with dis guy, he’s cool. How is he supposed to then counsel them about the whole “guilt by association” thing later on? Stevens, by my count, get implications in four felony activities: aggravated assault, aggravated rape, leaving the scene and possession. What if one of the players start hanging out with somebody like that? What that coach get fo’ say then?
I not judging da coach’s character at this point, but just questioning his judgement in this instance.
Fo’ me, I no can jus’ wait ’til next Thursday fo’ say something. Sorry.

  77. jm2375:

*yawn* Good morning gangee. Happy 4th of July! Wanted to sleep in but forgot to put out the rubbish can last night and da truck wen wake me up.

Congrats ST. TIme does fly when you’re having fun. :D
I’d also like to thank you for posting daily. I don’t think anyone else does. I’m not sure what we Tsaikos would do without our daily fix.

  78. bighilofan2:

    Marliz,

my tauts exactly. but meanwhile, we can polk fun at ourselves, can’t we?
i mean, whatcha gonna do fo 57 dayz? at first, got me boilin, den da more I taut about it, Leahey’s antics started me laughin.

i kinda wanna be like BarryM, da mahtuured vibe.

Ahem, so to make yu realize dis is fo real, I’m gonna go to the Hawaii County Council and get my frenleees to make da certificate foah

COACH GREGORY McMACKIN. It’m tinkin it’ll read

There are many coaches who volunteer their time and talent to helping Others, including (that other former coach’s name omitted). :D They do not ask for compensation nor do they seek fame. Without our daily fix there would be a whole lot of crazied UH Warrior Tsai-ko’s running around looking for information. Just any tid-bit of news.

Coach Mack would have to open the Coach Mack Clinic for the many deranged Tsai-kotics around the world. The treatment there would be 24/7 — re-runs of past games, one-on-one counseling by coaches and players, and, of course, non-stop feedings.

  81. FloridaTed:

    Tsai-Meister,

Congrats, wow, 27 years, that is a long time, but I’m sure, looking back, it might as well have been the blink of an eye. For certain, in your business, that’s true longevity. Looking back on life, I’m always amazed that the only real thing we have are thoughts and their results, either looking forward or backwards. The present doesn’t really exist, it’s like a constant little brook running over ones hand.

That’s why writers are so important, they’re the ones who record the thoughts of humanity, recording our collective and fleeting consciousness, preserving them to be something tangable.

Creating this blog is a great example, without it all our thoughts would just fly around, fading into the eather of space, but here it is recorded and creating substance.

For that, we all thank you.

  82. 99club:

    ST-
Congrats on the 27 years and mahalo for the excellent stories and blog.

I like your point on the irony of the Olympic hiring deadline coming and going. At least they didn’t hire anyone we know.

  89. FloridaTed:

    d1shima,

Miss you, my buddy, but we still have the toughts from that meeting. How are you lately?

  90. wafan:

    d1 . . .

Some of us dream. Some of us do. I am glad Mr. Tsai is a do’er. Otherwise, we really would require the services of the Coach Mack Clinic.

But for the off-season, I think I would not argue about being placed in the CM Clinic for Football Withdrawal. Especially if it were staffed with cheerleaders, Midori7 and UHFan808.

  91. Stephen Tsai:

My first story was the Macfarlane regatta.
It’s the best because it’s held with the surf (although it’s a grind paddling out to sea against the current).
The regatta started at 8 a.m. But it was in Waikiki, and I had trouble finding parking. I got there at 8:25. I was horrified. I thought, my first assignment and I’m 25 minutes late.
Seven hours later, I’m still at the beach, my shoulders are blistering and I’m thinking about why I didn’t become a CPA like my pops.
Later, I learned, that you never show up at a canoe regatta before 1 p.m.

  92. marlis:

    bh2

Your right we sure do get a chuckle at what we read. One example, of one that has me rolling of my chair is the Karl Benson (current WAC commissioner) speculation for the soon to be opening for PAC-10 commissionorship. Hold on to your stomach and listen to him. He doesn’t tell you the MWC negotiated a 120 mil./10 year television contract (CBS) and the WAC has 2 years remaining on a television contract (ESPN) that pays the WAC 1 million a year. That’s right… only 1 million a year. Or the poor officiating in all sports. Or his biases to Boise State.

Listening to Jeff’s radio show Wednesday. Benson said he’ll listen if the PAC-10 comes calling. But with reverence Benson, a 75′ alum of Boise State with many distinguished alumni awards from the school, said that …you guessed it…Boise State would be a good fit for the PAC-10. Laughable? If anything I would go with the current MWC commissioner before Benson.

  93. gigi-hawaii ©:

You must’ve been skinny back then, eh, Tsai?

  94. wafan:

    marlis . . .

If Benson moved (anywhere would be okay with me) who do you think would be the best fit for WAC Commisioner?

  95. Stephen Tsai:

My best moments at The Tizer were covering the Chaminade-Virginia game (I was a last-minute fill-in for “Ferd), the UH-Washington game last year, and UH winning the WAC basketball tournament in 1994. My favorite UH people are Tes Whitlock, David Hallums, Michael Carter, Matt Harding, Micah Kroeger, Costas Theocharidis, Dejan Miladinovic, and Doug Vaioleti.
    And two weird moments:
    • We were facing a deadline, the top of the sports page was open, and Alika Smith hadn’t committed to UH yet. So I drove over to Kalaheo, where he was sitting in the gym with his girlfriend. I talked to him for about a half hour until he committed. We made deadline.
    • I sneaked into Kaiser’s ICU, telling a nurse that I was Riley Wallace’s relative. I walked in, and he was all hooked up to tubes and stuff. He looked at me and said: “What the hell are you doing here?” Ah, good times.

    K, enough about me.
I’ll be back… after I march in the parade.

  96. d1shima [sez:]:

Just remember that it would not be nice to step on Fumbler’s air hose, fool around with his IV’s, or draw pictures on his chart.

Not that any of us wish evil things for the guy.

But, I do wonder how much disarray he will cause with the USOC. They might show up on the odd years for the Summer Games. Geez.

  104. FloridaTed:

    d1shima,

Hawaii is still a little better off than Florida right now. Our economy went totally in the crapper. 43% of all new condo’s are empty. The real estate frency and the subsequent crash has created a black hole, sucking everything in its wake down the drain. Our loan syndicator has dropped out and the minimum requirement now is a score of at 650 for new new start-ups. That eliminates about 70% of my clients. Oh, well, people here are really scared.

  105. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Happy Fourth of July Tsaikos!

    God Bless America
    By Irving Berlin

“While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,
Let us swear allegiance to a land that’s free,
Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,
As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer. ”

    God Bless America,
    Land that I love.
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home.

Those words ring true as ever these days. Our great country faces challenges at home and abroad which are daunting to say the least. It’s interesting to note that Irving Berlin wrote this American classic in 1939, another time of great challenge and uncertainty for the United States. God Bless America.

    That is a classic.

  110. Da Punchbowl Kid:

I missed the blog yesterday and didn’t have a chance to tell Dara what an excellent bio she posted. I don’t know if she posts under a nic here, but given her experiences with UH football,it would sure be nice to have her perspective thrown into the Tsaiko stew here.

Speakin’ of perspectives, between marlis’ and bhf2’s posts, all I can say is “bow wow, laulau, you guys get ‘em ah?” Winnah, you guys’ mana’o. ;)

  114. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Tsai,
Among your many great accomplishments here at the HA, you may also add “blog photographer specialist” (or what ever fancy resume padding title you can think of) to the list. Your pics look great, and the stories behind them are just the kind of stuff that we UH fans need to help us through the slow “football news” periods. The pics and stories build our connections to our Warriors as individuals, and they help to put us “in the shoes” of these guys as they walk the Warrior walk(sorry to use that analogy, but the pictures don’t lie). It’s funny to think back and recall your first pics. Lot’s o’ field and not so much Warrior. Your shots have really improved in content, framing and or cropping. Good job, grass hopper.

  115. Kekoa:

    G’day Tsaikos!

Now appearing for my 1st time ever as a Graphic Are-tist, specializing in making T-shirts that carry the Tsaiko persuasion…Ta-dah!…Kekoa!

Some random thoughts of The Pacific School of Fine Arts.

~ Mahalo to da *A-Joe* ohana for putting me thru the “How-To-Make-Any-Kine-Stuffs” in 3 easy lessons in just 4 tries! I konna P guud at it foam now on!

~ ST closely supervised the midnite workshop of *Ocean’s 11* and we somehow managed to keep from blowing up the craft shop.

~ Mahalo to Stretch for teaching me how to sand blast, or blast sand, whichevah. Very hot job, but oh so richly rewarding. Wait until your see all of those blasted glassware items the crew helped him make.

~ Thank you SteveM for helping me keep from melting my slippahs to the heat press!

~ The Evil Twins wore their halo’s slightly tilted to the darkside, but added a bright light to the work ethic of James & Koakane by keeping them busy handling wine and beer mugs…something they are experts at already.

~ Wreck was reminding all of us of the program he has put together for the Blog Bash. Wow!…made me wanna go camp outside the Sheriff Center from Wed. nite so I can be the first one in the door Thurs. at 6 PM!

~ ….and the glue that held us all together, A-Sports, a tip of the UH sports hat and hershey kisses to you gurl. I appreciate your allowing us to share your playhouse for a brief moment in time and create things I never thought possible in this lifetime.

  116. MeiLing:

GRM, mahalo for the tip! I’m jus’ wonderin’ whether I can get boiled peanuts at the Warriors games at Aloha stadium, too.

Off to the couch to watch the UH-Fresno St. game while the green chile stew is cooking.

Have a safe Fourth of July everyone!

Congratulations, Stephen! That is a long time to be with one company. They better appreciate you!

Poor Ferd he missed one of the biggest games in the history of basketball in Hawaii. Wil Pounds became one of my favorite players after that game. So agile for a big man.

None of ST’s favorite UH people are wahines. What Stephen they no like you????

Eh Fan Man!…You goin’ make one paddle - two paddle today o wat??

  123. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Glad I got my Colt autograph before before the crowds started showin’ up. As in last year, pre-season,on his birthday, after practice. My crew, homey and James were the only other guys on the field, as I recall…

By golly, that Jacob Heun looks like a comic book super hero, doesnt he? I say, first we teach him to do the shaka and the Ha’a. Then we put a Warrior green poi pounder insignia on his shirt, right in the middle of his chest. Next we give him a fern haku lei and a short green cape with a taro leaf design, add a black mask ala Vili and… Bam!!! Behold. “The Pounder”!!! Pummeling opposing defenses with his hammering runs and crushing blocks, as he and the rest of the mighty Warriors march to victory!!!

Ok, that prolly sounds silly. Sorry, all this dang writin’ I’m doin’ these days causes the imagination to buckle loose some times. Unless of course you like it, then ummmm, I’m not sorry.

“the pounder” I like it. I think it’s going to stick.

Scout.com has their review of Fresno St. today…rough way to start the season with Rutgers, UCLA, Wisconsin, and Toledo. Although starting with Florida (favored to win the SEC and BCS nat’l championship by many) and finishing with Cincinnati (favored to win the Big East) isn’t easy either.

  130. Mrs. A-House:

Reading the HA this morning, I need to make a “shout out” to the Kodama Koi Company for their donation of 100 Kois to the East-West Center Japanese Garden located on the UH-Manoa campus.

I take this as another example of the community taking pride in UH and their way of making UH a better university.

Thank you to the HA for printing a photo in Section B.

May others use this example to “lift” UH to higher levels - donations can be something other than cash.

As I mentioned before, “let it begin with me”.

  131. Jason:

Happy 4th of July to everyone. And DPK, thanks for posting the lyrics to God Bless America. Every time I think of that song, I think of Ronan Tynan’s renditions at Yankee games. To think of what our nation and the world has gone through since 9/11. Still, it stands strong, able to celebrate yet another birthday.

And congratulations to Stephen, for his anniversary. And to Allie, for her wonderful pictures. She must have taught Stephen a few things, cause he’s getting a lot better. What skill, to be able to get koakane in that shot with Jake Heun. In fact, I think that should be his nickname from now on. Jake “Koakāne” Heun. ;-)

  132. Stretch:

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

I know it’s late as I planned to post this earlier this morning but there is only 30 minutes remaining until I close all RSVP for the party. No more after 12 noon!!

  134. Kekoa:

Howzit 99Club! You gotta see this tank in person!…he is a load to bring down. Pounder is a perfect fit.

  135. Stretch:

There was a group of us that worked late last night to finish up some pretty nice stuff for the party. I will be taking pictures and asking SteveM to post it on his site. It will have the prices so people know what’s for sale.

  136. Da Punchbowl Kid:

    Jay Boy-
Happy Fourth to you, nephew. What I didn’t add to the post regarding “God Bless America” was this: our country not only met the challenges in 1939 and the six years that followed, it blossomed into the world power it is today. When we have the will, we can find the way. We see signs of that emerging will, but these next couple of years will very crucial. Maybe you’ll be part of Americas next “Greatest Generation.”

  137. 99club:

    Howzit Kekoa!

I was listening to rivals radio replays this morning and they had June talking about Hawaii. He was really high on our D this year and predicted they’d “bring it” to Florida. They’ll be even better by the end of the season, eh?

  138. Da Punchbowl Kid:

Almost noon. I can have a beer. Yipee! No more deep thoughts…

    Kekoa and 88,
Glad you guys like it. :)

One last thing I’m grateful for on this 4th of July. I’m very grateful that I’m ten minutes away from a Beck’s Light and some poke, when i could have been dressed up as the school janitor and marchin’ with Tsai. It’s HOT out there…

  139. Stretch:

    ***** BLOG PARTY CLOSED ******

the party is officially NOT accepting anymore RSVP’s, no more waiting list. We need to put the count together and make the food order. Thank you to everyone who emailed me and I look forward to a night of fun. For those who are not attending, there are other parties, cattle calls, karaoke for you to attend through out the year.

I had my Beck’s (regular not light) about an hour ago. Makes me so lethargic, can barely do the laundry. Yeah, today is Friday so it’s laundry day. Thank god for the Roomba that is vacuuming my family room right now.

    Ah, the life of Riley!

  141. Da Punchbowl Kid:

The talent on this team reminds me of the team during the preseason when Nate, Samson and the rest were seniors. Great athletes, great potential, not to bad on paper. (depends on who’s writing that paper of course). Kind of an unknown quantity to outsiders, but we Warrior fans know what JJ knows… They WILL bring it! This team has lots o’ super heroes!

  142. gigi-hawaii ©:

hubby is going to see Wanted starring Moran Freeman and Angelina Jolie this afternoon. Then he will come home and BBQ 4 thin sliced New York steaks. Will eat those with potato salad, broccoli, tossed salad, and for dessert, we will have Mango ice cream.

We also had portagee sausage (hot) for lunch.

    haha

Since it’s the fourth, why not honor the holiday and wash items which are either red, white or blue? Perhaps that will “lighten the load”. ;) See what happens when you drink before noon?! I wont be lethargic until a FULL hour after you! I suppose I can do that one load of laundry I’m supposed to do after a nap…

  150. gigi-hawaii ©:

    Doin’ a Esme….

I cannot figure out whether to be flattered or insulted that my name has taken on this weird new meaning.

    Anyway …

Hey, who else besides the aforementioned evil twins (Stretch’s words, not mine!) going to see Colt?

  172. gigi-hawaii ©:

hey it is not the anus. Burger King complained so the commercial was pulled.

Some of Warrior fans need to get a life, but we’re no where as bad as these crazies. The new iPhone doesn’t go on sale for another week:

But for the off-season, I think I would not argue about being placed in the CM Clinic for Football Withdrawal. Especially if it were staffed with cheerleaders, Midori7 and UHFan808.

Esme, don’t you need to buy a ticket to the Colt event today? via Pictures Plus?

Guess people cannot just show up without one?

  177. stacyj:

Congrats on 27 years ST. You’ve been there almost as long as I’ve been alive. WOW!

Heun is pulling a Skippa Diaz with those taped fingers. Hope he has the same mentality as Coach Diaz.

  178. Bosnoda:

    Nice 4th of July Parade!

Saw ST, but the highlight of the parade (for me) was Jim Donovan and Greg McMackin!

I don’t think I can ever remember JJ being in one, let alone HF.

BTW-ST, you walked too fast, didn’t get a chance to get any candy : )

  179. Stretch:

stacyj - how come you not coming to the party?? my mom is….

If that doesn’t work, maybe she can try some patriotic marching band music at full blast. It works for me on drunken fourth of July laundry days.

  182. stacyj:

    Stretch,
Just out of curiosity, are you logged onto the blog 24/7? via cel phone? I try to read the blog everyday and I see you on all the time but I know you got a job (at least I think you do). I’ve tried to post via my blackberry but it would not work. Just wondering.

  183. Stretch:

stacyj - i know when you are on the blog so make sure I am here. If you are not here, I am not also. It just seems that I am here 24/7. BTW - I get one job and am very busy during the day.

Hi gigi! did you see, you’ve inspired my to start blogging again :-).

  187. Da Punchbowl Kid:
