Unusually warm for this time of year, with the highs in the low-mid 80's. This will not last long, however, as by the middle of next week the high temperature will be back to more normal (low-mid 60's) figures.

For people who plan to attend the UH game at Nevada, there will be a limited number of general admission tickets available before the game for $10. However, you won't get to sit with UH fans (unless others get the general admission tickets)...but this might be an option for people who decide to go to the game at the last minute.
I did that once with Lori--finished a work project on a Saturday morning and hit the road in time to buy general admission tickets in Reno (this was a day game and it was actually pretty hot in the stands). They didn't have the $10 option back then, though I don't think general admission tickets cost much anyway.

Since we're less than 24 hours away away from the next T-Gate, just a gentle reminder to be sure to bring your HI-5 cans & bottles from home or work.
The beneficiary this time is the Hawaii High School Athletic Association's SAVE OUR SPORTS Drive.
The bin(s) will be set out no later than 11 am and all the recyclables - including donations brought from home - will be stored during the breakdown before the game so that they won't "walk away" with someone looking to pick up some spare change. We'll set the bin back up at the post-game party.
Again, ALL of the redemption fees will be made on behalf of the Tsai-kos & will be sent to HHSAA within 48 - 72 hours after the T-Gate.

For those living outside Hawai`i - Discovers' Day this Monday is not a state holiday although it still remains a federal holiday. Some private businesses give their employees the day off although most do not. Maybe 15 years ago, the state government created Martin Luther King Day in January but was unwilling to add still another paid holiday to the annual calendar so the Legislature eliminated Discovers' Day as a state holiday and created MLK Day in its place.
Back to work - hope to see many of you at Game 999 tonight.

Great day for Hawaii for the "cannonization" ceremony and the selection of a "local boy" for the Nobel Peace Prize. Gotta give it the the Prez who IMHO still carries with him all the "local" upbringing/ways taught to him by his late Mom and Grandparents. It is so refreshing to see him at functions with a unbottoned, short sleve, dress shirt - no stuffiness there!!
Just like walking around with slippahs during his visit before the passing of his Grandma.

Mrs. A-house, re arm bands. I googled it and found an article by a Dr. James Herndorn, MD, an orthopedic surgeon with Massaschusett General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Part of the article:
I was concerned when I read one advertisement for wrist bands...recommended for sports activities for the following reasons: transporting energy, alleviating chills in extremities, alleviating discomfort in wrist and ankles and enhancement of athletic abilities. I can see their use to keep sweat out of the palms and eyes and maybe to remind the athlete of an injured wrist, but I know of no known evidence for these other claims.
So why do athletes wear arm bands? I think most will say “it looks good”...”it enhances the muscular definition in their arms”. After wearing them for a while for these reasons some say they now “feel naked without them. It’s old school to wear them only on your wrist”. Can they cause harm? I don’t think so...but they should never be worn so tight that they press on a nerve or blood vessel impairing their function resulting in tingling, swelling or other sensations in their arm/hand. I don’t think the athletes believe that arm bands improve their athletic abilities...for example they usually wear them during games, but admit “most do not wear them to practice”.

Article about whether or not the WAC or MWC is better. The Idaho Statesman cares about boosting the WAC because they do not want BSU to be passed by TCU for the BCS spot. It would be bad for the WAC if both BSU and TCU were candidates and the MWC school got the spot and the money.
It is amazing to me that *Idaho* is 2-0 against the MWC and the rest of the WAC is 2-6 against the MWC. Idaho really stepped up for their conference!

I think the highest "stars" we got were 4, but those were Junior College transfers like Alexander, Adam Leonard, Colt etc.
I cant find any 4-5 star recruits directly from High School in the past 8/9 years.

interesting. one would think that scout.com would utilize a variety of analytic techniques to come up with that sort of system.
they also have the "strengths" and "weaknesses" portion of the recruits profile. I wonder how that information is gathered.
i am a bit skeptical on both extremes that it is 1) a "one mans" opinion purely arbitrary and 2) it is to be taken as the end all and be all of what a great recruit is.
I guess the actual processes and analysis of their evaluations are proprietary haha.

it seems to be more legitimate than I had thought it would be. what i like from the explanation is how they do it.

Most of it like al said is very subjective. I guess the only hardcore statistics used is from combines. other than that it is the evaluators stating their opinions.

If you look at star ratings, you cannot come to any conclusion about any individual player. However, *overall* the odds favor the teams that get higher star recruits. There have been a lot of studies over the past few years on how star ratings in recruiting correspond to All-American honors or to the NFL draft.
The article I linked here is just for the first three rounds of the 2008 NFL draft, but I've seen other studies for the entire draft over a 5-year period and for All-American honors in college that have similar conclusions.
Chance of being drafted in the first 3 rounds of the NFL draft:
5-star recruit: 44%
4-star recruit: 10%
3-star recruit: 3.6%
2-star recruit: less than 1%
Of course, teams with lower recruiting rankings can do well and beat higher-rated recruiting teams because of coaching, leadership, etc. Also, some college systems (like UH's, with Colt and Bess the perfect examples) do not translate well for the NFL draft but the players can be awesome in college.
Overall, the win-loss record tends to correlate with recruiting rankings for schools in big markets...though scout and rivals aren't as expert in places like Hawaii where they don't get to see the players play (and talk with the coaches) as much.

Nevada is very impressive. I predict they will not lose another game until the last one which is against Boise St. at Boise. And to think that Kaepernick is only a Junior!!!! He's improved his accuracy and this guy has speed, is long stride just eat up yardage quick. If he's in the open you can't catch him. This doesn't bode well for the Warriors in a few weeks.

Nevada vs LaTech results. Just what I thought. We made their (LaTech) running game look better than it really is.
We need to win two of the next four games to make a run for the Hawaii Bowl. Looking at the opponents that's not going to be easy.
Warriors need to reach deep inside and play with focus and resolve the next four games so we can turn things around.

TYaiea -- the blog software "translates" the text combo you type and places the smiley graphic in the posted comment. It gets the smiley graphic from another location.
Therefore, not all programs will do this--only those specifically programmed for this...such as email programs.

I think that the efforts of Doris and the camps like the All-Poly camp and the mainland camps that Hawaii recruits travel to have helped give Hawaii players greater exposure and may make the ratings less skewed. One big factor in ratings I believe is offers from schools--the coaches do the best evaluations and they discuss players with the scouting services. So many schools recruit in Hawaii now that recruits get found...and I'm very impressed with the efforts of Kapolei's coach to get his players noticed.
So, in the past some players in Hawaii might have flown below the radar and ended up walking on to UH...and now they might get a Pac-10 offer or a scholarship from somewhere else. Even D-IAA schools are giving scholarships to recruits from Hawaii now and in the past that would have been extremely rare. Great for the recruits in Hawaii high schools, but not great for UH.

Hey! where everbody! Was watching the Waianae/Mililani game, half time break now. Waianae 27 Mililani 20. Good game. Under 2 minutes to half, score was 20 - 13 Waianae. Mililani scored to tie it 20-20 . Waiane after several plays was stopped and with under 30 seconds, Mililani blitzed and the qb tucked the ball and ran through Mililani untouched for 67 yd td. how much time can he spend on one guy to verify his accolades and numbers?
how many games can he watch?
we all know that one game's evaluation is not indicative of ones talent. certainly there are some bonafide blue chippers, ahem, manti teo for example.
but, they can't watch all of the players.
the little birdie told me once very long ago that there is some association with scout.com and espn.

Mililani got some players two, with Taz, Harrington, and that MLB (don't remember his name) but the one that Hawaii needs to take a big look at is Frazier Taua. This kid looks like the second coming of David Veikune.
He has a great motor and never stops. He is a solid tackler and has quick feet. Once again though with any kid coming out of high school, you gotta make sure they have the grades.

I called da Mercantila 1 800 718 1710 and spoke to the to place an order" guy, not the "check up on an already ordered" guy. asked to speak to Kathy. she wasn't in yet. left a message with him for Kathy.
gave them our order number, 485077. Told him about me calling Kathy last Sat and Don Weir called her and placed da order, and it was supposed to go out Tuesday and get here yesterday, but then we found out there is a miscommunication between their sales rep and their shipping staff. told him i never care about da extra $43, just be upfront with us and communicate right between their sales and shipping sides.
told him to tell her i never care about all da excuses, but to tell her to get on da shipping side and make da connection with the plane and get da bike here now, today, speedy pronto.
he said he'd pass the message.
i going come back to this spot later today from da cabana and call her again, make dis ting happen now.

I ordered and got CONFIRMATION OF SHIPPING of some aquarium supplies. A few days later I got a call saying my order had not been shipped and it would cost me an additional $80 shipping for $100 worth of stuff - even WITHOUT the heavy pkg of instant ocean salt.
I said- so you want me to cancel my order and order from "your competitor" after having been a loyal customer for all these years? She said- yes. So I did.
Times are hard. Hawaii is going to feel more and more isolated. Yeah for the Big Box Stores - esp. Costco and WalMart!

The shipping costs from the Mainland stores to Hawaii is really wacko and perhaps the Congress people should look into it - there is a discrimination by the people in the lower 48 in shipping to Hawaii, especially when they insist on shipping UPS/DHL/FedEx ground instead of shipping it by a fixed-rate USPS.
