The Warrior Beat
February 8th, 2010 at 9:10 am
by the way, if a player like Chad Lopati joins the Warrior next season on a scholarship, does that count towards the initial 25 for the 2011 recruiting class? or was it counted in the 2009 class?
February 8th, 2010 at 9:11 am
First! Again! hehehe
February 8th, 2010 at 9:12 am
Rats! howzit Jun Tao.
February 8th, 2010 at 9:14 am
Top 5! Any news on players not signing the LOI? Have a great Monday, hangover from Super Bowl!
February 8th, 2010 at 9:15 am
finally get my digs-in....top five.
I like the lb's and de's UH recruited...there's a lot of diversity there.
February 8th, 2010 at 9:17 am
YOUlike.....the list from previous 2-3 days; there's two who didn't sign I guess because they didn't qualify and need to go to jc route.
February 8th, 2010 at 9:17 am
Is it just me or are the spring training camp practice days spread out more than seasons past?
February 8th, 2010 at 9:21 am
Good morning everyone!
Thanks for the list, ST!
February 8th, 2010 at 9:22 am
morning tsaiko country. nice sunny, warm, small breazzy day in the 808.
congrats to dem saints (who dat) on their super bowl victory. tremendous second half to pull away from the colts. who would have thought it.congrats again. (ps Mr. Ahouse should have stick around to bask in the win)
February 8th, 2010 at 9:23 am
Carryover from yesterday:
There have been 22 football players inducted into the UH Circle of Honor, although several were multi-sport athletes and some were largely known as coaches or contributors.
Only five football inductees played since UH became a full-time Division I member in 1975. The most recent players were Jason Elam and Maa Tunavasa of the 1992 team.
By the way, following the five-year waiting period, Timmy Chang and Chad Owens were eligible this last go-around.
In contrast, six Rainbow Wahine volleyball players and four Wahine volleyball teams are in the Circle.

Jim Donovan will be chatting live on Sportshawaii.com at 10:00 am. If you have a question, post them in this link:

AH!!! I noticed that the Warrior Bowl is at 7pm on a Friday night. Sounds like an evening at Ching Field since the stadium is a no-go.
BUT!!! It coincides with Wahine softball and Rainbow baseball, and I didn't check but looks like a full "house" at lower campus with a Warrior volleyball match to add to the madness that evening!!!
February 8th, 2010 at 9:26 am
Since Lopati went to a JC, thus voiding his letter of intent with UH, he would count as a new recruit in 2011, if he so chooses to sign with UH again.
February 8th, 2010 at 9:27 am
when is draft day?
February 8th, 2010 at 9:39 am
Thanks for the info about the coaches Doc.
Are the UH coaches recruiting at El Camino College in Torrance/Gardena? There are a lot of Hawaii people in the area, in fact, one of the biggest Hoolauleas is right next to the college in Alondra Park. Gardena is where a lot of Hawaii food places are, so it would be a really good place to recruit. There aren't a lot of Polynesian kids there, but there are a lot of D1 recruits.
February 8th, 2010 at 9:53 am
I think (J)J needs to attend all UH games Warrior or Wahine, I mean can we say Mouth of the South or what??? Cracked me up yesterday, him and Koakane together they would distract the entire opposing team.
February 8th, 2010 at 9:53 am
HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRANK25
make it a memorable day for you and wifey25!
February 8th, 2010 at 9:55 am
Such a beautiful day in Hawaii...no mo snowstorms and floods!!!
Gotta finish that finals paper...bbl
February 8th, 2010 at 9:55 am
Thanks ST for the clarification!
So if USC is Linebacker U, then is Kapolei Linebacker High? They've been putting out some really good players over the past couple of years.
February 8th, 2010 at 10:05 am
pretty sure that it is penn state that has been widely known as linebacker u.
February 8th, 2010 at 10:09 am
I think USC was known as tailback u back in the day
February 8th, 2010 at 10:12 am
I thought the "U" was Miami?
February 8th, 2010 at 10:15 am
kazz....no mvb at the time they could be in the playoffs and it will probably be on the mainland, but, i believe that the friday is a day in between mvb events.
but, no worry softball is at 6 pm, baseball follows in half an hour, and then spring game at 7pm. i guess they run free shuttles from the old arakawa's parking lot and several other strategic locations.
perhaps it is a budget cutting measure....you know save parking, maintenance, and other staffing payroll. maybe they'll park on the grass pracitice field. even if it rains they still have months to repair later.
what goes on in manoa these days???
February 8th, 2010 at 10:17 am
paco, i think u are right about that one. but, after the reggie bush debacle i don't think they wanna advertise that.
February 8th, 2010 at 10:17 am
miami u is aka thug u.
February 8th, 2010 at 10:18 am
happy birthday frank.
February 8th, 2010 at 10:20 am
BG...
I think that guy get chance next year. There's a bunch of guys who could play college ball at the bases both football and basketball. It does make me think though...hmm???
February 8th, 2010 at 10:24 am
Happy Birthday Frank25!
February 8th, 2010 at 10:25 am
al,
you might be right about that one. but they still produce some quality NFL guys. I mean look at the Super Bowl, had...Jonathan Vilma, Jeremy Shockey, Reggie Wayne that's a pretty good crop right there
February 8th, 2010 at 10:26 am
Happy Birthday Frank...
February 8th, 2010 at 10:31 am
HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRANK!!!!!!
February 8th, 2010 at 10:32 am
Morning/afternoon Tsaikos. Have a great day!!!!
February 8th, 2010 at 10:33 am
Happy Birfday to Frank - have a great day!!!
February 8th, 2010 at 10:34 am
Al,
You're right. Na Wahine is across the street and if I sit on the 3rd base side at the very top, I can easily catch what's going on. If Na Wahine are blowing out defending WAC softball champs Fresno State then, I'll leave early but might be one drag out fight-type softball game. Plus get da pilau-mouth FSU coach to entertain me…
Then again all of this is ASSUMING that they WILL have the Warrior Bowl at Ching Field.
February 8th, 2010 at 10:35 am
HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRANK!!!
February 8th, 2010 at 10:38 am
pb....florida is a hot bed for football talents. the "u" has a long tradition of producing nfl'ers. miami also has a long tradition of crime.
February 8th, 2010 at 10:44 am
Hey ST
I think I'll wait awhile before planning my funeral!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRANK!
February 8th, 2010 at 10:59 am
Happy Birthday Frank!
Good luck BG! You probably don't need it, probably a straight-A student.
As seen on "Big Love", HBO series set in SLC - character is deciding on going to the "Y" or the "U" (notice, not USU!!)
February 8th, 2010 at 11:28 am
Happy Birthday Frank!
Snow Day = No work. Back still hurts from snow shoveling, and roads are still in bad condition.
I'm currently awaiting OPM guidance for tomorrow. I wouldn't want to be the Director of OPM right now.....he's in a lose-lose situation regardless of what he decides.
February 8th, 2010 at 11:31 am
Happy Birthday. FRANK!!!
CRW- I hear more snow is on the way!
Thanks for the calendar of events, ST!
HiHo
February 8th, 2010 at 11:39 am
HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRANK !!!
I'm at work and away from my files, but I think yesterday was Barbara's birthday. If so...
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY MRS. MIDNIGHT !!!
February 8th, 2010 at 11:40 am
LizKauai:
Yep. Another 5-10" tomorrow night. This will go down as the snowiest year on record in Washington.
Most residential streets and tertiary roads aren't even plowed out (yet). The primary roads are fine, the secondary roads look like the plows took one swoop at it and haven't been back since.
February 8th, 2010 at 11:40 am
Al,
All of these crossover games is apparently the result of a C&C ruling as Wdoc informed me when I ran into her at the basketball games this past weekend.
Something about the Manoa and Moilili neighborhood boards complaining about traffic from UH Manoa. This was explained to her by Carl Clapp.
Something about condensing on campus events to curb traffic.
February 8th, 2010 at 11:50 am
KOAKANE:
NO NEED GLOAT OVER WHO WON YESTERDAY!!
"Oh when the Saints go marching in" ( trumpets/calrinets/trombones blaring and drums beating )
"Oh went the Saints go marching in" ( people dancing )
February 8th, 2010 at 11:51 am
calrinets = clarinets
of course all of you knew dat!!!
February 8th, 2010 at 11:51 am
Mrs. Midnight's birthday is TODAY according to fb.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Mrs. MIDNIGHT!!!
CRW- one of my fb friends is a snowplow man... he's not able to get home and has to stay on the job!
February 8th, 2010 at 11:53 am
Anyone else notice that the daily papers are getting thicker/heavier - more ads which, I take, as a small but positive indicator of digging out of the recession!
February 8th, 2010 at 11:54 am
Oh my, oh my, we got 2 for the price of one! Happy Birfday to Mrs. Midnight!!!
February 8th, 2010 at 11:55 am
kazz...i hear you. there will always be those old fuddy duddies who will complain against anything but the norm. you live around the state's only university doesn't the traffic come with the deal?
i can see softball starting an hour before baseball to get some cross attendance for both.
but, a single event like the spring game which should outdraw both events should be having its own date. besides, where is everyone gonna park that night???
that would be a greater problem for the concerned neighbors.
okay, so why don't those neighbors open up their driveways and yards and collect an $8 dollar parking fee that night.
February 8th, 2010 at 11:56 am
$8 is what a nearby non-profit organization charged for parking to those attending the past weekend's punahou carnival.
February 8th, 2010 at 11:56 am
Chase Daniel finished 4th in the Heisman voting in 2007, but he now has a Super Bowl ring for being the 3rd string QB on the Saints. What a lucky guy! And to think that he could have made the Redskins, possibly!
Some things just works in mysterious ways. Good for the Saints! It shows that a QB who is not very tall can play at the highest level as long as you have the ability. Brees played fantastic. Manning! Who dat!
When is the UH spring roster will be unveiled? Hafoka around? Do we have a kicking coach? If not, can we get a volunteer kicking coach...example, Peter Kim or someone who is capable? Jason Elam got cut so if he's retired he might be availble if asked. He can take a vacation to Hawaii and help out during the UH spring practices. What a novel idea!
Idea. If JD releases Nash now, put Farmer as interim coach to finish the season and start looking for a new Head Coach right now. Important for recruiting for next season. Gotta start now. We need at least 5 to 6 players for next season, at least 3, maybe 4 players are guards who can run, shoot, and handle the ball. The other 2 can be a swingman, 6'5" to 6"7" and a PF about 6'8".- 6'9". We need guys who have fiestiness and tenacity on defense and guys who can go up and down the court to make plays on offense. There must be a bunch of good coaches out there who can recruit and coach who want to be the Head Basketball Coach at Hawaii. There must be a lot of good Assistant Coaches in Division I who want to be a Head Coach. UH Wahine basketball team is improving by leaps and bounds. I like the way they play hard and hustle. That Arbuckle is fiesty. I like that. Right now, I would rather watch the women play instead of the men. Bottom line, it is all about the money and business. The men's basketball team is losing a lot of money because the product does not bring fans into the game.
February 8th, 2010 at 11:58 am
ahouse....i hear you.
but, did you also realize that the size of the newspapers are much smaller these days?
February 8th, 2010 at 12:02 pm
dere.....sounds like your recruiting wish list desires another fab five.
February 8th, 2010 at 12:03 pm
One thing that is IRRITATING me about the Men's bball team is all the complaining I am seeing between players. A bad pass is made and the arms go up and yelling like the other player should have either been their or should have caught the pass. Then the players come off the court and complaining to the coaches. Or the coaches telling them what they should have done and looks like they are making excuses why they didn't.
I think Balocka is rubbing off negatively on the rest of the team. I thought he was the only one but seen more players doing the same this past game. It's pathetic!!
February 8th, 2010 at 12:04 pm
derek...sorry.
February 8th, 2010 at 12:07 pm
al - #50 - I saw a sign, near the hospital, that said $10 for Carnival parking!
I managed to find on-street parking for the Wahine game on Sat.
February 8th, 2010 at 12:12 pm
Mahalo to Jim Donovan to responding to my inquiry about the student situation at the UC Irvine volleyball matches during his chat at SportsHawaii:
Also, Rich Sheriff and Stan Ching haven't responded to me in a while about the banner/Wahine volleyball situation, but JD also says that they are looking at purchasing 4 more banners to celebrate the NCAA tourney appearances (Final Fours?) and adding to those to list the WAC titles. JD says it "will be done" an the target is to have them up in the arena for the 2010 fall women's volleyball season.
February 8th, 2010 at 12:25 pm
JD also provided some information on the approximate ticket sale revenue for football games.
2007: $6 million in ticket sales
2008: $4.8 million in ticket sales
2009: $4.4 million in ticket sales
Hopefully ticket sales will pick up next year and the USC game should give a nice boost to ticket sales to start the season.
February 8th, 2010 at 12:25 pm
Happy Birthday Frank!
February 8th, 2010 at 12:27 pm
Happy Birthday Mrs. Midnight!
February 8th, 2010 at 12:27 pm
imho, the mbb coaches need to know that their players are still young men who need discipline, guidance, and hard workouts to play college bb. i don't think their practices are up to college bb, but the coaches think that they have nba players. right now, i don't forsee any changes to their practices and as a result, won't see much change in their game. granted we are missing sum players, but that is no excuse. like Pride said, "UH needs an attitude" and at the present, mbb is sorely missing this.
February 8th, 2010 at 12:50 pm
Stretch,
In the beginning of the season Balocka seemed to have his emotions under control. Even last season how many times would we see him "flip out" on a teammate after some sort of mistake. Now Balocka has reverted again even his free-throws are a result. Not sure if that was always how he shoots his free throws, but the frustration doesn't seem to fade and he just tosses the ball up in a manner to just get it "over with". He got a groin injury about two months ago and it seems he's never been able to recover his once solid play from the first two months of the season. Seems like his confidence and focus is lost.
You're right about the visible frustration on the team as a whole too. Not sure if it's just coming from Balocka, but last year Flemings also displayed visible frustration in funny looks towards his teammates. It's almost a "sidebar" story now when I watch them in person. Now whenever there is miscommunication, I am always looking at the faces of all the players to see who's gonna give the stink eye to who.
When a team struggles this much and for so long, there are often too many things to repair and often it's too late at this stage of the season. If Dwain Williams was available, we'd be physically better in that Hiram would have some time to recovery and Lay too would get some needed rest. Hiram's turnovers last Saturday seemed more like a result of desperation rather than him lacking the ability to run our offense.
Jim Donovan was quoted in the Advertiser last football season as being "frustrated" with the football team's 6-game losing streak then, but he pointed out the challenges and un-forseen injuries. This time I can see the long face he has when he is in attendance. He points out that to remove a coach during the season requires some sort of assurance and confidence in already having someone on staff to carry through with the operations of the team on a daily basis. The fact that he's not going to do anything with Nash until the season is over is an indication that he doesn't think any current coach on the staff can do this and that he's still respectful of Nash to finish out the season.
Personally, it's very frustrating. I don't have bball season tickets and dropping 18.00 most of the time and 26.00 sometimes (
) is difficult when you seen no sign of improvement.
Still... Next game rolls around I shall be there.
February 8th, 2010 at 12:56 pm
As with most things in life- UNITY brings success on all levels.
I commend you Kazz, and fellow fans, for continuing to support the teams thru thin and thinner.
February 8th, 2010 at 1:03 pm
ST,
Softball opens this week eh?
Any word on the starting line up? Gonna have Taualii as a leadoff? Set Majam 3rd in the batting order?
February 8th, 2010 at 1:13 pm
LizK,
It's not hard when you no more life like me!
Seriously though. Recent memories like Dave Shoji's 1000th win or past memories like 10,000 strong dressed in all white chanting "over-rated" to then #4 Michigan State as Bobby Nash, Matt Lojeski, and Julian Sensley tore them up with da treys are things you cannot script.
Too many reasons to list for fans like us to always be there whenever possible!!!
February 8th, 2010 at 1:13 pm
re: post #49
Al -- Not being critical, but be aware that the state has another university,
University of Hawaii-Hilo. Not nearly as big as UH Manoa, but with
parking problems, also.
February 8th, 2010 at 1:20 pm
Derek: We think alike. I see the tsaikos are treating you well.
Idea. If JD releases Nash now, put Farmer as interim coach to finish the season and start looking for a new Head Coach right now. Important for recruiting for next season.
I agree.
February 8th, 2010 at 1:20 pm
Happy Birthday, Frank!!!
February 8th, 2010 at 1:22 pm
Hau'oli La Hanau, Mrs. Midnight!!!
February 8th, 2010 at 1:22 pm
oops.....sorry hilo moon. not an intentional slight. i was referring to the oahu school.
btw, did uh hilo get its pharmacy school up and running?
February 8th, 2010 at 1:23 pm
come to think of it....isn't the west oahu a four year program as well.
February 8th, 2010 at 1:26 pm
Conflict, conflict...
UH Wahine Basketball game on Wednesday night. HPU Coach Sellito's last home MBB game at the new Maryknoll gym on Wednesday night. What to do, what to do...
I guess I'll have a ticket for the UH women's game available... Let me know if you want it.
My brothers played for Sellito. I think I need to go to that game. Sellito is retiring at the end of this season.
February 8th, 2010 at 1:29 pm
I've missed about 4-5 men's basketball games this season. For the games I've been at, the size of the crowd seems to mirror that of what was averaged last season, YET, from what I remember, it was reported that men's basketball MADE a profit last season.
I found that very hard to believe. For whatever reason, if that was true last year, we may, MAY not be too far off the mark this season.
Depending if the last win we'll see was back against SJSU at home.
February 8th, 2010 at 1:35 pm
al - yup the College of Pharmacy is up and running with the first class graduating next year.
February 8th, 2010 at 1:39 pm
ST- Thanks for the schedule of dates for Spring practice and the Football camps!
The kids' camps and the skills & big mans camps are GREAT additions to the program that were very long overdue when Coach Mack came on board! I've had my boys in the last two kids' camps and they have a blast. They also learn a lot and get to be involved with these incredible coaches and they get to interact with the players. For $40 this is a tremendous value. Thanks Coach Mack for doing this for the kids in the community, this goes a long way to building the program and fan base and I'm sure helps recruiting as well!
February 8th, 2010 at 1:43 pm
Al-
No need to apologize. I can tell from your postings that you are too wise and kind to make intentional slights. Yes, I think West Oahu is a four year campus and not sure if the Maui campus is.
The pharmacy program is up and running and I only hear great things about it. I attended a reception for UHH scholarship recpients in 2008 and I was impressed by the number of students from Hawaii Nei who are
enrolled in that very selective program. I also was impressed by the number of students that received scholarships.
February 8th, 2010 at 2:07 pm
College of pharmacy? LCC has a great pharmaceutical program.
Street pharmaceuticals...
(rimshot)
Whackawhackawhacka!!!
(Ok, that's my joke for the day)
February 8th, 2010 at 2:07 pm
i believe maui is still a community college.
i heard talk of future plans to make 4 year degrees available in a limited number of majors.
many outer island kids prefer uh hilo is what i am told to manoa. so they need to ensure the feasibility of uh hilo in the years to come.
February 8th, 2010 at 2:29 pm
Al,
UH-Maui is coming soon
http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2010100130010
February 8th, 2010 at 2:32 pm
Kazz - not to bring up a sore subject, but was that ref you keep complaining about at the Wahine game Saturday? If yes, which one was she? The officiating was terrible.
February 8th, 2010 at 2:32 pm
OPM issues another closure for Tuesday. Probably wise given most roads are unplowed, Metro service limited, and the expectation of more snow tomorrow night.
Looks like my business trip to Michigan on Wednesday is a no-go.
February 8th, 2010 at 2:38 pm
on the BOR agenda, President Greenwood wants a name change, MCC to Maui College. Someday, UH-Maui. Why, lots and lots of students attending MCC.
February 8th, 2010 at 2:49 pm
JM,
No, the official that was very pre-occupied with the trombone player instead of the actual game way back then was not at the Wahine game this past weekend.
No mistake about it though. Very poor officiating last weekend regardless. It's shameful and embarrassing to the WAC.
That #10 for Fresno should have been tossed out and Arbuckle was getting abused all night and still getting the brunt end of the bad calls.
February 8th, 2010 at 3:07 pm
Barbara would like to thank everyone for their birthday wishes! We miss the Tsaiko tailgate and karaoke parties. Love you all!
February 8th, 2010 at 3:15 pm
wouldn't it be just great if in the future both uh hilo and uh maui could have like a d2 or d3 football teams. opponents could spend a week playing both teams??? then maui/hilo go away for two games at a time???
great opportunity for local kids no?
February 8th, 2010 at 3:21 pm
Maui Community College = 2 year degrees, transitioning to
UH-Maui College = Currently offering two 4 year degrees, eventually
UH-Maui = (once it offers) Masters degrees.
February 8th, 2010 at 3:43 pm
Hoohiki what are the two degrees Maui is offering? with the super computer, a college foundation can be developed around the current high tech park, also astronomy.
February 8th, 2010 at 4:44 pm
Gotta second the motion to get Garrett Gabriel into the Hall of Honor. For anyone who went through those 10 years of losing to BYU, Garrett is my all-time favorite UH player.
Went to school when Niko was just leaving and when Al Noga had his super year - something like 18 sacks in one year IIRC. I know Al probably doesn't remember hanging around dorks in the dorm, but Al was always one good brother and gentleman.
And he could of easily just thrown us out the window if he wanted! He gotta be in the Hall too.
February 8th, 2010 at 4:59 pm
Happy birthday Frank and Mrs. Midnight!!!
February 8th, 2010 at 5:01 pm
CRW . . .
Keep warm and dry! You should post a sign, "Your federal dollars at . . . home." HA!
February 8th, 2010 at 5:05 pm
CRW . . .
One of my friends changed Washingtons. She works for the social security folks. The family lives in Maryland in some brand new 'burb. Good people. Their kids were super students, too. She called last night with the news of the closures. Gloated a bit then said that last year it was here and this year it is there -- the snow and ice treatment. HA!
February 8th, 2010 at 5:39 pm
was at UH and caught some of the unsupervised workouts today at Ching Field. saw about 30 skilled players (qb's, slots, wo's, cb's, and lb's) running drills in the crazy heat at 4pm and were still going at it after i left around 5pm. love seeing this dedication.
some quick notes:
aaron brown is an absolute physical specimen. dude is ripped like no one else and was displaying some outstanding coverage skills from his LB position. even managed to break up a couple passes and strip a receiver after making the catch! can tell he's running the show and showing the younger guys the ropes.
was able to identify rausch, austin, graves, and possibly shutter as the qb's. rausch still looks skinny and still needs work on the deep ball. graves looked to have the strongest arm, as his balls had the most zip on em.
rodney bradley wasn't running full speed with the rest of the guys but had no cast and was moving well as he was catching balls with austin and joe avery.
stutz2 def has speed. caught a ball in stride from austin then turned on the burners a few times.
pilares wasn't participating in the 6 on 7 but caught a ton of balls from all the qb's when it wasn't their turn during the drills. didn't see him drop one pass. he was cutting and looked super fluid out there.
there was also a local looking boy playing safety and he was breaking up a ton of passes. good physical build. couldn't recognize him but he was getting high praise from brown as they were always talking and he was receiving instruction.
let me tell you. it was hot out there, and seein all those dudes practicing in the thick of it was reassuring. considering there were no coaches involved and it was strictly players, the practice was really organized.
the volleyball team was doing laps on the outside rainbow track at the same time and josh walker lead the whole way. should let this guy try out for the fb team! boy has some speed.
was surprised to see umlauft running with the middle of the pack the whole time too.
anyways, no idea how often our boys go out and practice, but after seeing them today, you know they're hungry and can't wait to strap it up come spring practice.
aloha.

wafan,
I took a leisurely drive by my office around noon on my way to the bank. Crystal City was a mess! Even worse, projections have us getting 10-20" in tomorrow night's storm, double the initial guidance. The snow-removal infrastructure in the D.C. area is not up for removing this much snow all at once.
Needless to say this is a bad week overall. The two (maybe three) days of the gov't being shut down, combined with the upcoming three-day weekend, and productivity will be next to nil.

After the Wisconsin, Hawaii football I had some height envy, until I looked at the Super Bowl Rosters.
Indianapolis
Center 6' 2"
Guards 6' 2"
Defense Tackles 6'3" & 6'2"
Defense Ends 6'1" & 6'2"
LBer's 5'11", 6'0" & 6'2"
New Orleans
Defense Tackles 6'2" & 6'1"
QB 6'0"
It appears speed, quickness, mental toughness and game savvy can make up several inches.

On the MBB, it would not be a good move to consider any of the current staff for the HC job. The AD has to go out of town to get a new HC and that individual has to get the staff anew. If the desire is to change there has to be a complete overhaul and we will have to live with that.
On football, it is simply terrific to know that the young men are dedicating themselves to a new season. We should keep hearing about this and supporting them in their drive to succeed.
Okay, we should support the Vball team nad get ready for women's softball and men's baseball!

OldDiver,
point of contact, position of leverage, power + speed = ????? just ask Pride about going against a HAM (Hostile, Agile, Mobile) D lineman......Freeney was a freaky in a losing effort. He forced Brees to step up in the pocket as he applied pressure consistently from the edge. If the Saints didn't double team him, he was in the backfield quite easily. His 'get off' of the ball is nothing short of insane......would have loved to seen him at 100%.
too many people fall prey to the 'NFL Profiles' for size....great things have come from those who would not pass the 'first look' test......like someone told me, 'don't worry, wait til we strap it up.....'
good luck to all the Warriors.......to play on Saturdays is the reward for surviving the week of battles on the practice field......united as one in pursuit of victory............IMUA LANAKILA WARRIORS

cheepono,
You already have me chomping at the bit for the upcoming season! Cant wait to see the Warrior Bowl.
Questions for 'anonymous' & Derek,
In that scenario of yours, you've "canned" Coach Nash, have Larry Farmer as interim coach & you don't even know what coach is coming in. A new coach might clean house" & not have any of the present staff remaining. And you're going to tell the new recruits to come on down to Hawaii & play for an unknown coach who you'll assure them is good?? This is an enticing picture to you?? If you want to kill recruiting, that might be a good idea. I would call it sabotaging the present efforts. With your scenario, that high schooler that already committed would de-commit in the blink of an eye.
If you're going to engage in some flights of fancy, give some realistic & constructive alternatives that might make some sense.

Coach Mack,
gotta a question for you.
So you see yourself as the underdog, like Sean Payton, ready to make tne gutsy plays, ready to show emotion to the fans and the team, arms pumping and acting like you, and not any of your assistants, are in charge of everything?
you're doing great, coach. thanks for sticking with us.
now go kick some butt, and be visible about it!
February 9th, 2010 at 12:52 am
Wait. You can't ask Mack questions until Tuesday's post. (Our show monitor only looks at that day's posts.)
February 9th, 2010 at 1:07 am
it's Tuesday, so where is the new post-early birds got questions!

They do this all the time. In the NFL, MLB, and NCAA football. They fire the coach, insert an interim coach from the staff to take over, and then proceed to look for a new coach. Recently they did this at TexasTech. It's logical.
February 9th, 2010 at 6:08 am
Good morning Tsaikos everywhere, again.
Coach Mack...uhhh... uh.... (refrain)
February 9th, 2010 at 6:09 am
Aloha Kakahiaka!
February 9th, 2010 at 6:10 am
Been meaning to ask but never got around to it.
Tecnically speaking, what really happened to Mel DeLaura? I mean was he fired as strength and conditioning coach for the Warriors and replaced by Tommy Heffernan? Is that what really happened?
I'm kind of confused as to what exactly went down.
I know he's SMU bound, and it sure reads like he got a much better deal than what he had here at UH doesn't it?

maybe Coach Mack get some encouraging news about this season's mascot and the ha'a. and show us some muscle, and steely eyes.
and tell us he got plans fo try win da USC game, make like Sean Payton, run da team with a accurate runty kine qb. we get plenny on schollie.
February 9th, 2010 at 6:18 am
Have a nice day Tsaikos.
a hui hou!
February 9th, 2010 at 6:25 am
ENM,
about Mel
sometimes you gotta turn the eggs over so da bugga no stick and get burnt. time had come so everybody feels good about themselves, what they trying to do for make the move to the next level. for upgrade themselves. i sensed last year that Mel was in the way, nothing concrete, just the visible vibes, is all. and this was in the middle or early part of the season,, when we was on the losing run.
i'm guessing thats the deal. but i don't know. maybe coach mack will so, or won't say. if was me, i'd only say positive stuff, because we're moving on.
what i'd really like toknow about is the ha'a and Vili.
/s/ sleepless in hilo
