Rocky sequel?

For a variety of reasons, it does not appear the NCAA will have a near-future ruling on defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea's appeal for an exemption that would allow him to play as a sixth-year senior in 2010.
Savaiigaea is pressed with two deadlines: UH's spring practice opens March 31, and UH's Pro Day is April 1 in Carson, Calif. Savaiigaea, who has been training in Arizona, is taking on-line classes this semester to remain in good academic standing.
UH is prepared to absorb the possible loss of Savaiigaea; it is well-stocked at defensive tackle. Still, Savaiigaea's leadership qualities would be missed if he is not granted an extra year.
It appears Savaiigaea has a strong case. He was injured in the first half of the first game of the 2005 season, his freshman year. He did not play the rest of the season. Then in 2008, he suffered torn triceps during training camp.
Missing nearly two full seasons because of separate injuries is a legitimate case. But rounding up documents, statements and other related evidence is never easy, especially dating a five-year period.

Athletic director Jim Donovan and his consultants are scheduled to go to the Mainland today for a series of interviews with candidates for the head basketball coach's job.

Does this imply that UH hasn't been able to get all the documents for Rocky's appeal? Hasn't UH known for a *long* time that Rocky's appeal would be coming? Why weren't the required documents gathered a long time ago?
Other schools have a simple policy that when an athlete has surgery they get the doctor's records and statements immediately...not wait 5 years until the last minute when things are needed! Waiting means that people can move or lose records and then a Warrior player's career could end early because they were let down by the University.

For the person complaining about the Charleston Southern game, that contract was signed under HF. When HF failed to complete the 2007 schedule and was forced to desperately beg D-IAA teams to play UH, he offered Charleston Southern a deal where if they came in 2007 they also got to come to Hawaii again in 2010.
The worst part of the deal is *not* that UH was forced to play Charleston Southern...it was that the Charleston Southern gets the same sweet financial terms that they got in 2007. If I remember correctly, UH paid more than normal to get Charleston Southern since HF was desperate in 2007. So, UH in 2011 will once again pay for HF's scheduling blunder.

I remember debate over UH's expenses going to the Sugar Bowl, so I found it interesting to see what Alabama and Texas (both public Universities) spent on going to the national championship game. $4.3 million is a LOT more than $2.4 million...

I hope that Northern Colorado guy is interested, he seems like a very interesting candidate - all he does is win where ever he goes..
If not, hoping JD opts to go with a young whippersnapper. If he doesn't have the head coaching experience he'd best be knowing how to "sell".

In collegiate coaching you're constantly selling. Constantly! A college coach is a sales person. like it or not. they know this. Recruiting is selling. recruiting is no doubt the lifeblood of college athletics. therefor being a seller is a big part of your job. building relationships is a big part of selling. If a recruit ain't buying, you're terrible at selling, if you're program is suffering, you're players ain't buying into the system. If you're program needs to raise money, guess what, you're selling. If you can't raise money, you suck at selling. You're asking fans to show up? you're selling. Selling ultimately gives you results. and if you're terrible at it, you probably wont be a head coach for too long. It will catch up to you. coaches always have a strong recruiting message for their program and depending how well you tell that story is directly related to your selling skills. The End.
what we dont want is a guy who we think may be able to deliver. A Clyde Drexler type that know how to get results, know's winning and gets it done. but the guy cant sell, one of the worst college basketball hires of all time. The players didnt want to buy into what he was trying to sell.
Character, leadership, good seller - you have all three in a coach - you're dancing when it's time to dance.

You missed the whole point I was trying to make. I don't like "talkers" who can't back up what they say. There are too many talkers & sellers that are no more than hucksters or scam-artists who are able to fool intelligent people & yes, even businessmen! Know how to do that? Just appeal to their greed, hype up the potential and package it professionally in a power-point presentation. Are you paying attention to the many people (even locally) who are scammed out of of millions (and even their pensions) by people who know how to "sell" themselves?

My idea of a football player's outstanding leadership is one that leads by example on and off the field, strives in being in top physical condition, inspires and motivates others into playing better and puts it on the line on every play.
Not many players on a team fit these criterias. For they really are a rare bred.
When you look at Rocky I think it's debatable if he's a great leader. Or if he's even going to be truthfully missed by the fans or the coaching staff.
Sometimes, I think people get confused with football players with great voice boxes, and how they come across in the media, as being great leaders.
Give Rocky points in being a great speaker.
But as far as being a great leader I didn't think Rocky fits this mold. For basically he was out of shape last season. He carried himself, and the two bags of rice under his belly, not very well. Underperformed. Underachieved. And it didn't really seem like he added any spark to the defensive line or to his team mates. Like I said Rocky won't be missed.

Actually, Rocky was in pretty good shape last year after training with Ikei. He also made a full recovery from the triceps injury.

in fact, wasn't it felt that rocky loss too much weight preseason and didn't really recover his weight and strength until the second half of the season.

Practice Tailgate set for April 17th at Site #5 (map to follow). Can drive right up to the site and the restrooms are private and literally 5-6 steps away. Big field for keikis (big "keeds" too) to play...where's Homey?!!! BTW, plenny grills and the site is rated for 100 occupants. Start up crew report at 0900. That is all.

I think the Anonymous one does have some valid points on Rocky. I'm not going bad mouth Rocky because he certainly is a very likeable young man. And yes, these are "young men" who needs our support. What I believe Anonymous is getting at is that Rocky is replaceable...and we won't be in such dire straights if he does not return. He is not the game changer dlineman who will constantly draw a double team, nor has he been the player that opposing offensens would have to game plan around. But this was not just Rocky, the entire Dline needed work. Tuika played well at times, but for the most part, our dline was quite pourous.
With that said, I hope we get Rock back because it's always good to have experienced guys around. He just gotta play bigger than he has in the past.....injured or not.

This deal with Rocky and Brashton is really frustrating! It makes sense when a player needs any medical procedure, that the team would have everything recorded. Why then, is it so difficult to get the information needed?
If this a problem with the No Clue At All organization, could a player bring suit for damages? The lack of timely decision making on their part could cause a student athlete some finacial harm.
2010 schedule looks brutal! The lack of bye dates could prove "itai"!
USC came, saw, adjusted, kicked some butt...frustrating to watch BaseBows not be able to adjust to pitching and game plan. Pitchers looked ok ... only had a hard time with strikes...hitters looked like they had no clue of what they needed to do...lack of ability to sacrifice/move runners into scoring position. Only one good game was on Saturday. One good game out of a series will not be good enough. Good that they getting to play against teams of this caliber before the WAC season.
Look forward to a good WAC season if the starting pitching can get healthy. I liked what I saw of the new players. They look like they will contribute and hopefully this year. This was a very revealing series.

I posted my comments day old blog. You can see my name matches my intelligence. I may get crucified for giving my choice for new UH basketball head coach. Our problem is middle of the Pacific ocean where only rare talent risks coming here in no man's land. Name recognition is hard. JJ provided a NFL quarterback background. A former NFL head coach. The inventor of the post Mouse Davis run and shoot. Mouse did not invent the run and shoot but was the architect of the one that put Portland State on the national news. JJ tweaked it to his own design. JJ was no JFK as an orator but he was enigmatic none the less. We need an enigmatic coach. We need someone with built in name recognition like JJ who recruit on name value. Red Rocha a one time NFL all star and one of few great big men in those days of old. Red was enigmatic in his own way. One can't tell me his background didn't help get some recruits to come here. Joe Jellybean Bryant. A natural. Played almost ten years in the NBA. Yes he didn't coach DIV 1 college backetball but did coach some years in the women's professional basketball league. And many more years in the overseas professional league's. Red did not coach DIV 1 as head coach before coaching here. Hooray for the Gib's, the Kyle Smith's and the Boyle's. But these gentlemen would command high salaries with no guarantee. I believe Jelllybean would accept far less than this. Kobe Bryant said on the internet his dad would be a good fit for the UH. Money can't buy that kind of publicity. Money can't buy the publicity JJ and Red provided the UH. And in these hard economic times we got JJ and Red for a bargain.Jellybean would be a bargain and provide money can't buy publicity for cash strapped UH. It's hard to get talent to come here. But some kids may think "If Kobe's dad thinks it's cool enough to coach in the middle of the Pacific, it's cool enough for me". Okay people, start throwing the rocks and spit balls who think my idea is cooky and crazy.

I recall the picnic tables outside the covered patio sits on concrete so canopies can still be placed over them.

Kazz, some say "wild pitch" but it kinda looked more like a bush league play. Sometimes in baseball, you need to send messages to your opponents. Unfortunately, the pitcher is usually the one who is the messenger. Benches emptied and lot of "make big body" more a result of frustration and smack talk.
It happens but we cannot let frustration control the emotions to the point that you do something like that. Coach Trap said he will address the situation and he was a bit upset at what went on. Young ballplayers at this stage are still maturing and good coaching will help them along. I totally understand why but your opponents are also trying to get under your skin and have you "lose it". Makes for a easier opponent when they play out of control. I remember sitting under the aluminum bleachers at the old stadium and listening to the smack going back and forth. It was great! Some guys can really bring it. NCAA cracked down on it since but some of these young ones probaby wouldn't have been able to take the ragging back then.
USC is a good team, has good coaching and scrappy. Their coach "talked" to the pitchers after their loss and look at how the pitchers responded the rest of the series. I was thinking if we could get to their starters, the relief corps could cave but they didn't.
We got some good pitchers and you see it in spots. We need them to step up and in a hurry. The Saturday game was one where USC got some good breaks. Two hits of the "excuse me" variety that went just past the pitchers mound just like a good push bunt for a base hit and last night too. Just enough that we couldn't make a play on the ball. That's baseball. Sometimes can and sometimes no can but you always get a chance to make up.
This week against AFA, we need to bounce back a play to potential. WAC starting soon and got to be on cohesive unit by then.

Thank you Da Punchbowl Kid. Tsai is smart. He see's something in Jellybean too. Kobe will be in the basketball Hall of Fame. Kid's with 4 and 5 star talent nearly impossible to get to UH. But Jellybean is another JJ. Red Rocha had a funnybone nyoot many knew about. In the old ABA Hawaii Chiefs, he recruited a guard if I remembered correctly, Harvey Harmon. Harmon loved to clown around. If an opponent just breathed too hard on him, he'd fall flat on his back and take a charge. And he got one of few 7 footers not in the NBA but a great player. If the Chiefs could not win, they were fun to watch. 7 footer Bill Spivey was a joy to watch playing the basket like he owned it. Harvey Harmon was a clown and fun for fans to watch. Please JD, you can refill the SS arena with a enigmatic choice who you wouldn't have to pay an arm and a leg for. Jellybean is a frustrated Harlem Globetrotter wanna be. He will not only provide name recognition but fun basketball fans would love to see. And don't get me wrong, he is not a dumb clown. Kobe himself said his dad is an intelligent knowledgeable coach.

Thanks protector. Little known, Red Rocha was a white Harlem Globetrotter wanna be. He loved clown players as long as they contributed. Why not a coach who loves to entertain as well as win. Hawaii BB fans would love that! Kobe knows that. Kobe has been a serious no nonsense player all his career. Don't be surprised one day he pulls a Meadowlark Lemon. JD, save money. Get a basketball version of JJ. JJ had a funnbone too. He loved to clown around that one day he will play a game with all plays being passes. He was a great tongue in cheek joker. I miss JJ. Spunk,...the kids need spunk, they need to play with spunk. didn't look like they were playing to "Protect The House". Sometimes it look like they just going trough the motions.
Les's teams got dirty. In da mud. Played with "spunk", pride and you never could count them out. I've witnessed many bottom of the ninth comeback wins under Les. This happened because they never gave up.

I remember Kolten's interview and when he was asked, who is the pitcher he least wanted to face, he said Linsky..because the guy got some giddiup on his fastball and at the same time not too good control!...LOL! If you played ball you all know of at least one pitcher like that. Talk about on tip toes while in the batters box!

Agreed. Seems like a lot of UH players make strides with ikeis.
Even Rocky looked great during training camp (I saw the videos).
But truthfully can someone make the argument that once these players come back here from training with ikeis they resume their past routines and lose their strides that they gained with ikeis?
An absence of strength and conditioning guidance, here, at UH? Maybe? Perhaps?
If the answer is yes, then what I see isn't deceiving as far as seeing players (Rocky) ballooning up and playing out of shape once the season started.

So coaching at college level is a requirement for the UH head coaching job? What if Kobe retired and put in for the UH head coaching position? No prior coaching in college so Kobe is inelligible. JJ would have been on the cusp with one year as Dick Tomey's assistant at UH. Michael Jordan would not be qualified with no prior college coaching? I know my examples are exaggerated. I watched Frank Arnold's tenure here. I am not saying like father like son. But I can't help being wary. We need a coach who entertains as well as wins. In this terrible economic status whole state is in as well as UH, fans are not going to turn out for status symbol. I'm not saying head coach has to act like the San Diego Chicken. I'm not saying we need another Abe Saperstein to put a clown team who makes people laugh and win. There is another unknown genius out there like our former Rick Pitino. If he comes dressed as Bozo the Clown, I will promise to attend every game, win or lose. I know I am being too silly. JD will give us a pleasant surprise.

The schedule looks brutal. I'm sure we all would have liked to seen the bye before Boise instead of after. Haven't looked at Boise's schedule, I'm sure the WAC bent over backwards to help them as usual. I'm already planning road trips to Boulder and Las Cruces...maybe add Fresno during the Columbus Day weekend. We'll see!

now that the football season has a fourteen week window...
if i were the athletic director, i would do one of two things each year with the way things are now.
one, i'd make sure that i have eight home games and five road games. i'd ensure this because no matter how you slice and dice the thing you'd still have only one bye week in a thirteen game schedule.
or,
two, i'd schedule only twelve games if i had to have a balanced six home and six away games thereby giving my team two byes and the much needed break in the action during the course of the season. especially with all the long distance travel.
or,
three, i'd petition the ncaa to be able to have a fifteen week long season so that i may still take advantage of the hawaii exemption and still be able to squeeze in all thirteen games. then i wouldn't worry about a 7-6 home and away schedule and i'd still get a much deserved two bye weeks.

We can't deny that it would be an instant hit to have a coach named Jelly bean. Having Kobe as a son gives him tremendous leverage. It really does if you come and think about it. as long as jelly don't have no kids named 'butter', we'll be all good. i haven't heard about the final #'s yet on the bench, but the coaches might be holding off until ALL the lifts are complete. there was that one walk on player that hit 37 reps on the 225 bench, so he might be in the running for top max. with a dinged rotor, ryan got 380 for max and 23 reps on the 225, so he's all good....right where he wants to be. with more rehab and train for a year with coach tommy, he'll be at 450 and 30+ next year spring ball........God willing and stays healthy...........auryte.

ST seems to imply that the problem for Rocky is that *UH* could not gather the medical records needed for his appeal. In that case, we cannot blame the NCAA.
I agree with NYUH that it would be good if UH could gather all the records at the time of the operations so that they are ready with the appeal information instead of trying to scramble 4-5 years later. One thing to note is that UH had a different compliance person (the guy ST called HF's "drinking buddy") when Rocky and Brashton started at UH.

Mack has made decisive coaching changes over the past two years. i.e. o-line coach, play calling reassignment, special teams coach, strength coach and others. Is Coach Mack indecisive or is he just not making decisions you are not in favor of? Didn't know how to phrase this without sounding annoyed, sorry.

old diver don't be annoyed. okay to call it as it is. Mac made an O line coach decision his first year, o line got blow out, waited all year to make the adjustment that Smith wasn't ready. Special teams coach quit to take a coordinator position at Yale, had to make the decision on change, otherwise no ST coach. Did he change the SC coach before DeLaura chose to go to SMU or did he make the announcement because Mel was leaving and had to fill the position Mel was vacating. When UH couldn't score last season and struggled again this season, especially in the red zone, a change was needed. Question I have, how much of an imput did Mac himself have in the offensive scheme during the game, did he override Ron Lee, did he call the plays, all of which needs to be considered. when things weren't going well, he looked to Rolo to salvage UH's offense after Ron Lee put his hands up and stated he wanted to work with receivers only. Too much micromanagement maybe?

Mack sure came across as though he was having bouts of indecisiveness or just purely overly irritated with the pressures of losing. When we are winning, everything is fine and d. It was during some really tough (aka losing) moments that Mack wasn't at his best. Most coaches are not.
Cannot blame 'em. Mack is one emotional guy. He's the coach, gotta support 'em. Hopefully this is a year of many more highs for Uncle Mack.

I know you question a lot (if not all) of Coach Mack's decisions. As for me, I LIKE Coach Mack's acquisition of Coaches Tormey & Shaw and I could already see some improvements during the year. I seriously doubt they were available when we lost some coaches (for whatever reasons) earlier. Give Coach Mack some credit for them. I also believe he's the type that is willing to give inexperienced / up-and-coming coaches a chance like Stutz & Smith. Are you going to condemn a guy because some of his experiments aren't raving successes? What about how Coach Aranda & Coach Rolo are progressing. To me, they are very successful experiments and they are going to get even better, esp. when people chill and give them a chance. If you want to criticize Coach Lumpkin, have at it Ralph. I won't defend him. But cut some of the other guys a little slack for now. All of the criticisms, questioning & bashing have been gone over the whole past season ad nauseum, esp. during the losing streak & the trouncing by Wisconsin.
Let's support the team & encourage them in their extremely important & daunting opening game!

Here's what I see. ESPN dictates to the WAC teams, or to Benson, on what days of the week it wants to televise the games.
And the WAC bows to ESPN, like their the sacred cows.
Meanwhile fans supporting the teams and are accustomed to Saturday games are having this taken away from them, in some instances when ESPN comes into town, so that the television network can maximize it's exposure of telecasting WAC games on the weekdays, where it can garner more viewership, I guess.
What about the school's longtime fans?
Don't they count for anything?
Don't they have more equity in their home teams than ESPN ?
Why is that the fans have to endure the hardship of watching their teams play on an odd day, not a traditional Saturday, so that ESPN, the WAC or the schools makes money?
Who wants to watch their home team play on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, which are all work days?
Who wants to trade in the pageantry of what a Saturday game brings for an odd day?
The reason I bring this up it's not only us, UH fans, that are crying about having to play it's opener against USC on a Wednesday in accommodating ESPN but also the Boise and Nevada fans are not too receptive of their teams playing on odd days in accommodating ESPN's scheduling.
I've read on their boards that the prevailing sentiment is that this sucks. For in the case of Boise State they play on three consecutive Fridays and a Tuesday. And Nevada has two Friday games.
For most of us, including fans at other WAC schools, a Saturday game has a festivity to it, an excitement in the air, freedom from work, worry and stress than a weekday game brings in suiting ESPN.
I'm agreement that the fans, whose schools yield to ESPN scheduling of their teams game, are being shortchanged on what the full essence of what a Saturday game brings. This is sad.

If you feel finishing 7-7, then 6-7 is what it is and its okay with you, fine with me, i'm not going to go up or down because of your feelings or emotions, it is what it is and everyone of us feels differently about the Warriors. We all want the best for the Warriors, but some of us want to win and we want to question why aren't we winning. This board allows us to render an opinion, I think it is an appropriate media forum to do so as long as we conduct ourselves with civility, and I don't cuss, use abbreviated letters to denote "swear words", and I don't name call people but I do question some of the decisions or lack of decisions made by the coaches.

This is my take on Rocky, Brashton and everybody else who seeks a sixth year.
When you're a freshman and you're injured, you don't like to say anything. Maybe it's a way of remaining tough in front of the older guys. Whatever. Which is why we always have a year-long charade: Will he play? Will he not play? So an injured freshman usually just goes under the basic redshirt category.
But then, suppose there is another season-ending injury?
Then the player starts thinking about a sixth year. Trouble is, there's no documentation for the first injury.
Every time I see a player on the sideline during practice, I always ask: What's wrong? Some are honest. Most aren't. Guess what happens five years later? They always ask if I can find an article detailing a freshman injury. I always tell them, sorry, you didn't want to say anything back then, so there's no documentation.
It's changed a little under McMackin. I've had freshmen show me their injuries. I write about it, then file it away. Maybe they'll need it maybe they won't.
But when you're young, you never think of the future. And that sometimes comes to bite you in the wallet.

Though there are many times I agree with you, I also reserve the right to have a differing opinion. Sometimes we'll just have to agree to disagree. I hope you don't mistakenly think that I'm satisfied with a losing record. And what did you mean by "some" of us want to win? I thought ALL of us want to win, but some resort more readily to the 'blaming' game.. I don't mind constructive criticism of the team / coaches at all. I've objected only to bashers whose only solution was to call for the firing of the coaching staff. By the way, I also reserve the right to question other people's questions and reasoning, too. That's what discussion is. I'm not sure if you took my comment as a personal attack, but it certainly wasn't meant in that vein.

ST ~ I offered Carl Clap a chance to use our software to profile each team member as soon as they were cleared medically to join the team.
It could be used to establish a base for when they are in 100% medical shape. Each time they are injured we can give the coaches a better idea of exactly when they are ready to play again. The players would not be able to 'by-pass' the system and play when they are not fully recovered.
It could be used in several ways to determine precisely what level of rehab the player is at. When time for providing the documentation there would be evidence so precise, it would stand up in a court of law. How do I know?
Our firm is on the AG's list for providing expert testimony in medical health fraud cases. These profiles have never been disputed.

the position announcements are not the result of procrastination on the coach's part. not in this instance. there are things that are impeding the decision announcements progres.

spring break begins this weekend, UH fb will be starting spring practice shortly thereafter. Wouldn't it be prudent to name a new coach or coaches if there will be changes, and the new coach or coaches on board already to prepare for spring practice. Like getting to know the personnel and setting up and defining what needs to be worked on. If the same coaches remain, same jobs or reassignment, then, no big deal, they know what is coming in.

if they have 35 or so applicants and they are doing 2 or 3 interviews every couple of days, dang, how long will the process take or has JD eliminated a set number and plan on interviewing only the finalists. So, was the Chamanide coach a finalist, or he happens to be one of the first to apply or convenient to interview being so close by UH campus.

So, your post seems to imply that the problem with gathering the medical records is that freshmen and sophomore Warrior players might not have told the coaches/doctors about the extent of their injury. That is something that I hadn't thought of...so, in that case the problem cannot be blamed on the NCAA or UH.
Athletes (and young people in general) often think that they are invincible, so I could see how they would not consider how they might have a season-ending injury in the future so they need to document each injury at the time.

The WAC agreed to the contract with ESPN that lets them move games away from Saturday because *they had no other choice*! Each conference sets their TV deal and the conferences that bring in better ratings get more money and get the prime Saturday time slots on the networks and ESPN. The next tier of conferences got lesser money and took what time slots were available. Then conferences like the WAC and C-USA took what was left over (though C-USA got a 2.5x more money than the WAC) and they agreed to play games on other days.
If the WAC did not agree to play games on days other than Saturday, they would *not* have gotten their ESPN contract since ESPN would not want to show enough of their games on Saturday. No TV contract would mean no money AND no recruiting for the conference. So, the WAC had to agree to play games on other days or basically fold as a conference.
If the WAC improves and actually can win a majority of their nonconference games against BCS conference teams (like the MWC), then they will get a better contract the next time. If BSU leaves, ESPN probably will also leave and you won't have to worry about games being moved from Saturday.
The MWC's TV deal lets them play *all* games on Saturday. They also get $1.3 million per year per team while UH is getting $400k (including the $75k they got for playing USC on a Thursday). UH fans love to brag how the WAC is on ESPN and the MWC is not...the the MWC gets 3x the money and gets to play on Saturday. That deal was signed before the MWC had so much success on the field, so their next TV contract will be bigger...remember, the WAC only got the ESPN deal because the MWC turned down ESPN.
After the WAC recently got a big increase in their TV deal from ESPN, UH will get $400k this year from TV. C-USA gets $1 million per school, MWC gets $1.3 million per school, ACC gets $6 million per school, SEC gets $17 million per school, and the Big 10 gets $24 million per school.

With our profile, once they have established a base, we can determine their readiness. There are medical measurables that they are unable to feign. They can't 'mask' an injury either.
Medical prescreening from the start, and then each time they have a *soft tissue* injury, that's the key. Every player should be profiled to provide documentation to both player and staff.

Coaches love measurable stats. Reps in the weight room, timed events on the field. Injuries can be evaluated with much more accuracy.
A hard copy, graphic representation of what a player's health status is, would help the trainers focus on rehab.
